Stopped in to visit Ben's Diner for breakfast. Ben's Diner is located in a retail shopping complex. It's rather big on the inside. I ordered Sausage gravy over 2 biscuits, plus 2 eggs over easy and an order of hash browns, plus coffee and water. Food came up quickly. The sausage gravy tasted "sausagey," but it was a tad too salty. The eggs were cooked properly, The hash browns were of the type where they are premade and then either deep fried or cooked on a flat top. They were hot, crispy and cooked properly (you get 2 of them). Coffee was good. Service was good, paid with Apple Pay. If you add the tip as part of your digital transaction - they give you the tip back in cash to place on the table for their server. Call in to do a take out!! Turkey and dressing with mash potatoes. Got it home no mash potatoes!! That was $22.00 just for turkey and dressing.very unhappy.this is the second time not going to be a 3rd time. So if you do a take out you better check it before you leave. We LOVED this place. Best grits of our entire time through the South. As two old gals tripping across the country, we generally can't order much at restaurants. Although we only got two bowls of grits and one side of steamed broccoli, and drank tap water, we were treated as queens. Loved our breakfast today at Ben's Diner . Driving down to Dollywood from PA and stopped at 7:30 this morning. First, I have to say what a pleasure our waitress, Barb, was. It was busy and she was the only server. She was great! And as busy as she was, she never complained about being short-staffed or how crazy it was. Which, at any other place lately we would have had an earful of complaints. Barb's demeanor was calm and she treated us like we were the only people she had to wait on. Excellent service! Okay now onto the food. 3 of us had the cheese omelette. I had it with sausage and the home fried potatoes. Others had the bacon and the hash browns. Our grandson had the pancakes. Everything was great. Very fresh and portions were generous without being obnoxious. The home fries we REALLY good. They don't have a really large menu, but they offer the basics. The diner is an older establishment, located in a shopping mall but don't let that be the factor you judge this diner by. I had breakfast and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. No frills, American breakfast standards and since you're in the valley expect good biscuits, sausage gravy and for the advanced culinary pallets some good ole scrapple! Woodstock, Thank God, is not LA or SFO, so don't expect truffles, tofu and sushi. The town is a beautiful example of the more beautiful Shenandoah Valley and Ben's is a historic and wonderful little place to eat with a small town flavor - the hot roast beef sandwich that covers the plate with gravy and mashed potatoes is 5 stars. I hope that this review will help to balance others that shed no light on the following.: Think of BEN'S RESTAURANT as a diner. Not the new diners with their high prices and fake diner food but just like the older diners of times now passed, with at least one exception: the location is that of an older shopping center, not in a typical DINER in a freestanding building with shiny metallic siding. So, when you think of coming here, thinking terms of diner food, such as fresh milkshakes, delicious fresh hot french fries and cheeseburgers. Then, of course, you can get the diner style dinner meal if you wish. I have enjoyed dinner here at BEN'S but usually go elsewhere for that. I went here based on YELP reviews, and proximity to our hotel. It seemed popular. My wife described the decor as like a church basement. The food was bland and without much variety. No fresh vegetables to be seen anywhere near the place. The ambiance was sort of a cross between an old age home and a David Lynch movie. This is one of the best hometown restaurants we have in Shenandoah County. I'm glad it didn't close when Ben Franklin Store did. I eat here every chance I get and the prices are low and the food is great. I'm one of those people standing in line for a seat when the Thanksgiving special is served. A lot of good food for a small price. As for the bathroom comment, this out of towner is not aware this restaurant is very old, The doors may be alittle unhinged and the place not up to date, but as long as its 'clean enough' to use, its good enough for me. read more
