Takeout chocolate eclair was expensive and blah. The pastry was more like a stale hotdog bun than a delightful airy French eclair. The cream filling, over filled, was not like pastry cream at all. It was like whipped cream with no sugar or vanilla. The chocolate was not rich and smooth but rather dull and tasteless. Two of these monstrosities were priced at $7 each plus a hefty tax! These people do no know what an eclair is supposed to taste like or don't care that they are selling overpriced dreck! This is the second time we have tried them. Never again! read more

Flour & Water Co. is a cool little restaurant/bakery/coffee shop located on Main Street in Old Town Woodstock, VA. The place has incredibly cool ambiance - lots of old wood floors throughout. There is seating inside as well as out front on the sidewalk/porch area. I was excited to see that they have an Eggnog Latte on their espresso menu. I haven't had an eggnog latte in several years - ever since Starbucks stopped offering them. I ordered a large eggnog latte - with 3 shots of espresso. It was excellent! Delicious! Stopped in this cute little bakery shop when I was visiting my sister in Woodstock. There were so many options to choose from it was hard to decide! The vibe is sort of off-beat - the tables are all different sizes/styles so it comes off sort of like a mis-matched coffee shop ambiance. There was a pretty long line when we came, but when we were able to place our order, it was prepared pretty quickly. I got this souffle kind of thing with an iced tea. When I ordered the tea, I had no idea it was going to be blue. Threw me off - but it wasn't terrible, just not what I'd expected. The souffle was okay but not the best I've had. If I'm back visiting I'll have to try some of the other stuff because I think I perhaps just chose poorly on my order. My sister and my mom were raving about what they ordered, so maybe I was just unlucky. read more

I loved everything we got here, and we got almost everything! The stars are the fun pastries: the magic bar (my favorite) and the homemade pop tarts (family favorite) among the stars. Not only the pastries, but the breads are phenomenal. The croissant bread is rich and decadent, perfect add to a sandwich or to elevate French toast. The baguettes have that wonderful airiness and nuttiness that make a great taste. I loved our lunches as well! The family loves the chicken salad on the croissant bread, a great balance of savory and sweet. I sampled the soup of the day (vegetable), which was rich and buttery. I loved that they served it in a mug as well, so homey and charming! I also wanted to add we had lovely service. We must have stood at the counter for five solid minutes randomly adding new items to our lunch and bread/pastry order, and the staff kindly and politely assisted us. My dad mentioned last time he was there he'd bought a baguette and been bummed to leave it on the counter, and so they even threw one in for us!! We typically get our holiday desserts at a different local bakery but decided to get Christmas desserts from Flour to Fork this year. We were extremely disappointed. The $55.00 Buche de Noel was pretty, but inedible due to how dry the cake was. I am not sure if it was over baked or stale, but it was so dry even the children would not eat it. We ended up throwing almost the entire Yule Log away, which was hard for us as a family who loves desserts. The cinnamon rolls and dinner rolls were stale and seemed like they were made days before we picked them up as well. For the money we paid, we definitely expected more and the quality was honestly unacceptable. read more

I'm not a local to the area, but a bakery like this sorta makes me wish I was. We arrived here right before closing on a Saturday but they still had a decent selection left. We went with a few cookies, their brownie and a tart that I believe was passion fruit, mango and almond. This is a must-visit if you happen to be in Woodstock when Flour & Water is open! The pastries are incredible: the cinnamon buns (a weekend special) are massive, tender, and moist, with plenty of frosting to dip all the pieces in. The chocolate croissant looks elevated, with buttery, airy layers, and not too heavy. The coffee is incredible, as is the chai latte, which is made fresh, not too sweet, and not made from a powdered mix! You can choose what type of milk you'd like with your chai latte; I chose whole milk. At around noon -- 3 hours before closing -- there were still plenty of pastries to choose from, but only 1 cinnamon bun left, so you'll need to come early if you want some weekend special pastries! A large glass dessert case takes center stage of the bakery complete with oversized glass cookie jars on top and wicker baskets filled to the brim with fresh breads and pastries. Service: 5/5. We stopped at Flour & Water on a Friday at around 3pm on a Saturday. According to their website/Google and Yelp, they typically close at 3pm, but when we arrived they were 100% open. I believe this was due to the busy nature of the time we came, as there was an Arts and Crafts festival going on in the street nearby with many people coming in looking for an afternoon coffee/snack. The staff was more than helpful in guiding us through their menu and making suggestions. We were on the hunt for a bread that would compliment shashuka, and the baker recommended a black pepper parmesan sourdough they had on special, which fit the bill perfectly! Food: 5/5. As mentioned above, our main purpose for stopping by was to find a bread to pair nicely with our shashuka. The pepper parmesan sourdough loaf was amazing. Perfectly crusty and peppery outside paired with a soft savory inside took our shashuka to the next level. We also grabbed a latte and a snickerdoodle cookie to enjoy as we walked around Woodstock. They need to send their bakers to France for some lessons. Today I got a ham and gruyère croissant and a baguette. unlike any other baguette I've ever seen, these look like a pencil sharpened on both ends. I love to make sandwiches on baguettes, with the pointed ends, less than half of the baguette could be used. The local Food Lion does a better baguette. They also forgot to put any cheese with the minimal amount of ham they had on the croissant and they were so dark they looked and tasted slightly burnt. read more

When we stopped at 11AM Thursday for a quick takeout we wanted to get the ham and gruyere savory pastry but were told that it is only offered on Saturdays. Not so according to the website, but we elected to have the Muhlenburg sandwich instead even tho it was early for lunch. What a disappointment! The first thing I said was, Wow, that is a lot of bun. Meaning, there isn't much actual filling in there. For $14, there were a few slices of some kind of deli beef, three small slices of a very mild cheese (supposed to be sharp cheddar), no horseradish cream, a single RING, not a slice, of red onion and one thin, skimpy leaf of bib lettuce. The poppy seed bun was the major component of the sandwich. The sandwich was wrapped in paper, unsealed, and had been made earlier and there was no bag offered and no napkins included. Balanced the sandwich on the dashboard to drive to a nice spot to eat as the bakery is on Main Street. So we won't ever be back. We got home in the middle of the afternoon still hungry. read more

Obsessed. This place is run by locals and runs well. They have everything you would want a bakery to have. The food and beverages are high quality, creative, and a fair price. The service is always friendly and pretty fast. Their drinks are made from local, fresh ground coffees and espressos....can not beat it. The Chai is house made. The pastries, breads, desserts, soups, sandwiches, pizzas, etc. are made from scratch and with such heart and skill. We are lucky to have Flour and Water in this beautiful small town. read more
