Based on the reviews, I was expecting a little more from this place. The spicy nuggets are not on par with Sweet Hut, unfortunately. The gua bao pork, chicken, and beef were all pretty average. The Taiwanese noodles were nothing to write home about. Surprisingly, the item we enjoyed the best was the the takoyaki or squid balls (which is Japanese not Taiwanese). The passion fruit green tea with lychee is pretty good. The servers were attentive and friendly. Overall, this place gets a solid three stars. read more

We stumbled in here after tediously grocery shopping at the Hong Kong supermarket nearby and were enticed by the restaurant's cute and modern exterior. Staff was sweet and pretty chill with everything, but service was extraneously slow (20-30 minute wait despite two other people in room (-__-)) and food was mediocre. Maybe I misread when I ordered something in the bento category, but my meal was not at all presented in a bento neither T-T. Ok, this isn't a fancy shmancy Michelin star rated place, but for my low class standards, this is a place I crave when I can't get it, where I"m guaranteed a good meal everytime, where I can find no other replacement for yet when I want some good bubble tea or another plate of that huge Bento drum. As for the bubble tea, I've tried tea all over the country and still, this is the one that I come running back to. The tea is light and refreshing because it's actually tea! The tapioca is made to the right consistency, gooey and warm, and the egg pudding is also a light texture so as not to weigh down the refreshing quality. Most of the flavors are syrups so you don't get that powdery chalky gritty feeling. I will say that I've never been to Taiwan, so I cannont compare to the motherland. But I'm happy as a clam whether it be authentic or not. I will say, this is more of a snacks/street cart kind of menu, but even more to my liking! The Bento nuggets are the perfect amount of breading so you get a mouthful of chicken lightly battered and fried to a crispy golden morsel of yumminess. Not to mention the yummy fried basil leaves that come with it. You can tell them how spicy you want, I always go for spicy. I've had all the appetizers, they are all fresh, tasty, the typical pickled items and other stuff. The signature dish is the Bento drum I would say. It's a huge quarter leg/thigh that you definitely want grilled. It's seasoned beautifully with the skin a perfect crispness, the chicken juices are flowing when you take your first bite. Oh, I start drooling just thinking about it. The second most popular dish is the Bento Chop, your pai gu fan, is a thinly sliced pork chop perfect for frying and breaded lightly so as not to overpower the pork. I could go on and on since I've tried practically everything on the old menu when they first opened, but I won't. I will say for snack foods, I love the shrimp omelette, basically an oyster omelette with a switch in seafood. Gooey, eggy, slippery delicious mess that slides into your mouth and oozes of home cooking and comfort. Oh, one more thing only, I promise, I almost forgot, how could I forget the gua bao??? The bun is soft and fluffy white, a wonderful flavor holding pocket that doesn't stick to the roof of you mouth. And inside, treasures that will make your tongue salivate for more. The piece of braised pork belly inside is so fatty and moist, you barely have to sink your teeth into it, it just melts away. That combined with crisp, fresh pickled mustard greens and cilantro, I sometimes just order a couple of these and make it a meal. My friend told me about Bento (kind of hyped it up). I wasn't disappointed just not what I expected. It's alright. Good bubble tea- yogurt milk tea is my drink of choice. Service is alright, but during your meal they won't really come and ask how you're doing (so you gotta flag them down if you need something). Food is affordable (less than ten). Decorated like a warehouse. Clean inside. Order carefully. What a Taiwanese person likes may not be what an American southerner likes. While I'm walking to my seat I usually observe/blatantly stare at what others are eating. I liked the chicken nuggets (snack section) with spicy powder on the side. My friend and I wanted to try Te Wei on Buford Hwy yesterday, but they were closed on Tuesday. Then we went to Quickly bubble tea place bought some drinks. Since my friend doesn't really eat spicy food, I thought Bento Cafe might be the good place to go. I had been there few times. They serve authentic Taiwanese Dim Sum. Those are what we ordered: SQUID BALLS ($4.99): 3 stars. 6 squid balls per order. It was deep-fried, but not too hard. It tasted good, but I was a little disappointed because it supposed to have some basil, but the whole order only had one piece. Basil isn't that expensive, is it? BA JANG ($2.99): 4 stars. It was pretty good, and could feed me very well. It made of sweet rice and pork. Sauteed and also a little sweet, tasted better with peanut powder. Taiwanese Sausage ($4.59): 2 stars. I am pretty sure they bought the sausage from Chinese supermarket. I could make it by myself at home. It didn't worth $4.59 at all. MINCED PORK ON RICE (4.59): 4 stars. Came with one egg, and it tasted really good. I would like it more if it was spicy and with more sauce. BRAISED PORK ($6.99): 3 stars. Came with minced pork on rice, one big piece pork, stir-fried tomatoes with egg and sauteed green beans. Rice and egg were good, but pork and green beans had too much peppers. The service was very good. We went to Bento around 6pm, and the place was kinda empty when we went And their health score was 87-B, not very good but not too bad. I previously visited this cafe. Upon ordering milk tea with less ice, the barista put more ice and when asked to fix it, the barista offered to take out the ice and add more water. What is the point of that? The point of having less ice is to have a less watered down drink. That is why I ordered the drink with less ice. Less ice and more tea is the point. Not to have her replace the ice with water. When this concern was brought up, the waitress refused to fix the problem and simply offered multiple times to add water. My new favorite place in Atlanta for Taiwanese food. Ping's inside Great Wall is great too but sometimes you just want to eat at a real restaurant instead of a food court or getting take out. Been here a couple times recently and always order my favorite Taiwanese meal- minced pork over rice. You can pick 2 of their daily veggies (tomato and egg, broccoli, bamboo shoot are ones I've been offered so far) to go with it. Their portions are just right and the minced pork is to die for. I don't like fatty meat, so I need my minced pork to be actually "minced" so that I don't see the fat, and theirs did just that. Their meat was flavorful and rich, but also light enough to not feel unhealthy (does that make sense?) I've been to Bento Cafe a couple of times and always got drinks to go. The food menu looked very delicious and had a variety of different dishes that I would want to try; curry chicken/pork chop, grilled pork chop, radish cakes, chicken nuggets, beef noodle soup, etc. Food: Radish cakes here are by far my favorite dish. Have had them multiple times and always good. Can't say the same about the other dishes. I've tried their nuggets, curry pork chop, baos and beef noodle soup. I was not a fan of any of them. Not sure which curry package they used but i was not a fan of the spices or the lack of in it. Left a weird after taste for me. As for the nuggets, they are okay in my books. The Baos. Something new they have advertised. Three different baos, pork, chicken, and beef. Chicken was HUGE but not a fan of the chicken. The fried chicken was flat/thin and the aioli sauce was too strong. The bao was also soggy on the bottom. Half of their drinks are made from powder. Props to the server for telling the truth. He/She pointed out which drinks were from powder and which were not. Overall, decent choice for this type of food if you are limited to the jimmy carter area. Come for the drinks and snack food / appetizers. read more

Yummy taiwanese street food--ordered the nuggets, seaweed salad, and the ba wan. everything was very authentic and quite tasty. Their bubble tea is great too. Not too sweet and very flavorful. the tapioca balls had good texture chewy but not too soggy. The ba wan was by far my favorite out of all the dishes i ordered today--wasn't greasy and reminded me of eating at the night markets in taipei. A couple of cons: i did notice a weird smell when i first walked into the place, like one previous reviewer noted. The bento nuggets were a bit on the salty side for my tastebuds. overall, enjoyed my adventure and will be back to try other dishes. read more

First off, the food there is, hands down, delicious. The restaurant does a good job creating the authentic flavors of popular Taiwanese dishes. The only drawback is its service, which is one of the worst that I have seen. If it is busy when you walk in there, don't expect to have a quick sit-down meal. There service is extremely slow and the waiters/waitresses are very inexperienced when it comes to handling lots of traffic, and unfortunately, when it does get super busy, the managers/owners just hide in the kitchen until the crowd dies down. Also, the FOOD QUALITY DROPS DRAMATICALLY, because they simply can't handle heavy traffic. With that being said, I love the food and drinks, but I could do without the horrendous service. It's so bad that it outweighs the incredibly hard to find delicious foods. Unless Management gets their act together and properly train their waiters and waitresses and learn how to handle customers, I am more than happy to take my business elsewhere. We have been coming here for years. The food is not exciting, but it's consistent and hit the spot when we're craving for Taiwanese food. For appetizer, I love their salt and pepper nugget and Gua Bao (a steam bun stuffed with pork belly and other goodies, a must try for foodies). On the other hand, the Bah Wan is definitely an acquired taste, which I have not acquired yet. For entrees, I usually order their Chicken or pork chop rice and beef noodle. My only complain is the sides that come with rice dishes often seem like an after thought....I never care for any of them. Most fruit flavor drinks appears to be made from powder. I usually avoid these flavoring, coloring and sugar laden chemical water. However, their milk tea is good (not sure if it's real tea). As some reviewer mentioned, there's a funky smell in the restaurant. I notice that sometimes (less in recent months) and it smells like sewer.....yes, sewer. Wife thinks the service is usually average to bad but I have no complain. However, had a bad experience today where we waited an hour for appetizer and even longer for entrees. A waiter blamed the kitchen for cooking our order last due to our large party (only 6 people). I don't understand that reasoning, but whatever. The owner came out later but instead of apologizing, she explained the difficulties they encountered in the kitchen and blamed her inexperience staff.....honestly, I don't care what goes on in the kitchen, I just want my food. She took 10% off our check, which is nice of her. I hope they straighten out their service, or we will have to stop coming here. read more

Bento is one of the very few Taiwanese places I go to. It's authentic enough for me to justify coming here religiously for several years. I mean, how can you say no to pig ear salad, pan-fried radish cakes, fried radish cakes, Gua-Bao, and at one point in time, stinky tofu? Since we know what we like, we almost always get the same things now: Fried bento drum meal (comes with 2 sides of the day) for the hubby and plain pork fried rice for me. I cannot say enough about how delicious the friend drum is. It's the whole dark meat portion (thigh + leg) fried to perfection. It's seasoned well and the flavors just burst in your mouth. They have boneless version for people who wants it easy, but for me, with bones is where all the flavors are. Their plain pork fried rice is not plain to me... although I do add heavy white pepper on top after I get it. It's called plain because they have a curry version available that you can order too. I'm not hot on the curry, and I'm always the authentic original-style kind of girl so plain it is. It's actually pretty close in tasting on how you'd get a real, greasy, super yummy Taiwanese-style fried rice. Other dishes we get... we've tried the pork chop and it's so so for me. I also like to get their seasonal cold sesame noodle dish (served May-September). Braised pig feet is also pretty good. I wouldn't recommend any of their soup dishes, with noodles or not, because there's absolutely no flavors in anything. Although I'm not so obsessed with Bento anymore, I'm still pretty thankful to have them around. There's not that many authentic Taiwanese places around, and even if it's not quite there for many of the dishes, I at least have the options. I don't think I'll ever be satisfied.. unless I'm in LA. read more

I'm rounding my 3.5 to a 4 star. My friends are regulars and absolutely LOVE coming here. But I'm in full agreement with Tiff on this one. I can only order one thing here: Bento Original (grilled) Pork Chop with corn and some other side. If money didn't matter, I would also order the Original Porky Gua Bao. A warning for unfamiliar guests: to my unpleasant surprise, braised beef is served cold. Oops. The beef noodle soup is highly recommended, but I don't like the taste of the broth. My BF and I go to Atlanta at least once a year and we eat here for lunch almost every time. He loves it because the food reminds him of Taiwan, where he grew up, and I like it because in my opinion, the food gets better with every visit. The first time I ate here was back in 2010 on my birthday. I wanted to go somewhere and decided to go to Atlanta because it was still close enough to Charlotte to make it a one day trip. So on the morning of my bday, my BF, my best friend, and her guy took the 3 hour and 15 minute trip to Atlanta and its surrounding cities and after a visit to The Varsity, so my best friend could get her tiny $2 burger, we stopped into Bento Cafe for some real food. We started out with the appetizer combo where you can choose any two from the list for under $6 or any 4 for about $8. We opted for the pick two and chose the braised bean curd (cold dish) and pig ears. I didn't know the bean curd came with a nasty garnish of cilantro and green onions on top, but after removing them, I can say the bean curd was EXCELLENT! I thought that it being a cold dish would be a little off-putting but surprisingly it didn't bother me. It was saucy and delicious. I didn't eat the pig ears but everyone else seemed to like them. We also got an order of the bento nuggets under the "Fried Fritters" portion of the menu. The bento nuggets were pieces of seasoned, deep-fried chicken stir-fried with some basil. Obviously I didn't try it but it looked pretty good and apparently it was because my 3 dining companions devoured them in just a few minutes! The entrees didn't look that interesting to me. None of the items really stood out, but my BF suggested that I try the veggie huifan, which is some veggie stir-fry dish served with football-shaped rice. It came with bok-choy, broccoli, black mushrooms, peas, carrots, and tofu in a watery-looking light brown sauce. Honestly the first time I tried this, I did not like it at all. It was pretty bland and I hated that the sauce was watery instead of thickened with a little bit of cornstarch. However, for some reason, on our next visit a year later, I decided to try this dish again and it was much better than the first time. I asked for less sauce but it was still kind of watery. I guess it's supposed to be like that.. at least it was seasoned a lot better, which made it enjoyable. So now whenever we come here, I continue to order this dish :) Our most recent visit here was a few months ago, over Memorial Day weekend. My BF and I got our go-to dishes but we also tried the shaved ice dessert with red bean topping and grass jelly topping. The grass jelly topping was weird (guess it must be an acquired taste) but the red bean topping was SO GOOD. Nice and refreshing dessert to eat on a 90 degree day. Also tried the green tea boba smoothie on prior visits and it is great as well. The restaurant has a very cold and industrial feel to it. The interior could be a little nicer looking but the food is yummy and I think that matters more than the atmosphere of the place. I walked in here in the spirit of adventure... I know nothing about Taiwanese food so my comments should be considered as totally ignorant. The cafe was in an Asian strip mall amongst a multitude of Asian markets stores an other food places. The inside was pretty modern/industrial not exactly on the warm side but more utilitarian. I went there for dinner so it wasn't super busy on a Thursday night. My server was really nice and very helpful when I explained to her that I had no clue what I was ordering she was nice enough to point out the most popular items on the menu then checked on me repeatedly to see how I liked my food and even offered to switch something if it wasn't to my liking!! That was awesome service if you ask me.. Reading a few reviews here I ordered the Fried Chop which is pork, that came with a side or rice and two veggie choices in my case I picked corn and potatoes. I also had the spicy chicken nuggets. The Chop was great, really thin cut pork cutlets coated with a crunchy batter kinda like a schnitzel, no sauce required, it had great flavor. The rice was topped with a sauce that I wasn't crazy about, the corn was tasteless, but the potatoes Asian style were pretty good. The spicy nuggets were probably the best I've had! Crunchy, spicy, and real chicken chunks. Just awesome. I also got the signature Milk Tea and it came with Tapioca bubbles...YUM! I would definitely go back to try more shtuff! read more

My wife is a Taiwanese and she is picky in food. She said that is the best Taiwanese food in the entire area. I found the prices in Bento Cafe are reasonable too. They has a fire chicken which is very traditional Taiwanese disk. The skin is crispy and the meat is soft. Another traditional Taiwanese restaurant in town is a beautifully decorated KanPai Grill Restaurant at 3466 Holcomb Bridge Road, Norcross, GA 30092. Well, KanPai is a much more formal restaurant where you relax with your entire family members. The presentaion of the food was great but the flavors were missing. The beef noodle soup tasted like soy sauce soup so does the pork chop noodle soup. The bubble tea was okay. If you want an authentic Taiwanese food there is really not a whole lot of choices but the one I can recommend is one in Great Wall Supermarket's food court. They serve the similar food and not only they are cheaper but the taste are whole lot better. I am Taiwanese and I know what Taiwanese food should taste like. I do want to compliment on the great service we received. The food used to be good when they first open and for whatever the reason there was it has gone downhill. Bento Cafe is the #2 bubble tea joint in Atlanta, #1 being Snow Mountain of course. I come here for their tasty bubble tea. They make their tapioca pearls fresh daily so the pearls don't harden and "gum up". Service is quick and friendly. Enjoy your bubble tea while surfing the web on their WiFi or just enjoy reading an asian newspaper or magazine. I hear their beef noodle (niou rou mien) is pretty good. I love bento and would go there all the time when my office was nearby. Unfortunately, I always think of going to Bento's AFTER a meal so I haven't gotten a chance to go back. I always ordered a take out lunch and was so happy with the portions that I got. I had the grilled porkchops, rice and seaweed knots. I absolutely loved the porkchops, so flavorful! YUM-E! I was introduced to this place by my bestie, who is super Taiwanese. No seriously, she is chucked full of Taiwanese pride & culture. I don't think people in Taiwan are as proud as she is. Naturally, she is picky about traditional foods. The bubble tea is as traditional as you can get without taking a long international flight or hopping over the the west coast. & it is delicious. The bubble milk black & green tea are my faves. I've only had a few things on the menu but always order the same dish: The Bento Drum, fried. The skin is so perfectly fried & seasoned & the meat is so moist. The only time I try something different is when someone else orders it. The bento nuggets are also good. The decor is harsh. It's basically just cinder blocks & wood tables. If you go to their website, it looks exactly as displayed. They have assorted Taiwanese & American magazines for you to read while you wait for your food & also assorted manga books. Location wise, they are pretty far north of metro ATL, which is a bitch getting stuck in traffic on the way back home. The BEST bubble teas hands down. I would recommend this place to anyone. I live in Atlanta but make the drive to norcross just for Bento. The prices are extremely reasonable and the food is pretty good as well. The staff is really nice every time and I've never had any complaints. They act like they know you, you'll never feel awkward there. The inside is set up with a loft feel.. Cement floors, high ceilings. It's always clean. I never change what I get-- Jasmine Milk Tea with boba but my fiance got the Rose green tea and it was AMAZING. I would definitely recommend either of those. read more

Quickly's and Snow mountain tastes way better, and Quickly has the better price. beef noodle soup: What can I say? The broth is EXTREMELY important in this dish and Bento does not reach my expectation...and the noodles are too thick for me as well. Actually I find the noodle dishes in general are not very good. My mom ordered some noodle soup dish once and the soup tasted like hot water with msg. Bleh. curry rice dishes: I've had better. Bubble tea: It's actually not bad, but I still prefer Quickly's... Service is a hit or miss sometimes...they can get REALLY slow when the place gets a little more business...and the dine-in customers could experience a pretty lengthy wait for their food... And the owner there seems to hold a grudge...my friends once got rotten lychee jelly in their tea, so they informed the restaurant, but the owner took it as a complain and told her employees not to serve them (my friends who go to Bentos EVERY week) lychee jelly. Been here twice within a year (Oct 2012 and May 2013) :) Will probably visit again. The interior design is very unique and has a contemporary feel to it. I really like it! The food is pretty generic, I'd say. But their selection of teas is off the charts! Bubble tea is a must! The second time I went, I really liked my curry chicken. Its taste is surprisingly good. The waiter service was friendly and on top of refilling beverages. The food was decent for the pricing. No wait, plenty of parking in the huge lot outside for the mall. However, the restaurant did lack decor, and could invest some money in that. Seemed more of a dessert place, but i guess that's what its mainly for. If you have any questions of what an entree is, the back of the menu has pictures so you can choose whatever looks good. I did not try the desserts, so this review is just for their lunch entree Neither did i try the bubble tea so i cannot rate the tapioca. Definitely come here for a snack as it is ok priced. There are only a few Taiwanese food places around the Atlanta metropolitan area. Bento is one of them, unfortunately there are a lot of things that will prevent me from going back. Service is very inconsistent. When there aren't many people here the service is quick, otherwise it is really slow. The fact that they have one person manning the cash register and serve means the service slows down to a halt when there's more than 2 or 3 sets of people at the place. Last time we waited 2 hours for our meal, and we saw several people walk out because their orders weren't taken. The place also smelled like a bathroom, perhaps it was bad sewage but the smell was off putting. The food itself is decent. The fried pork/chicken portions are huge and you get two sides as well, whatever is made that day. They are fried pretty well, and don't taste too dry. The chicken nugget appetizers are crunchy, they go well with some sriracha and/or ketchup. The price for all this is reasonable, which is $10-15 pp. Problem is that the service was just horrible, they need more than one server and/or more cooks. This is the nearest Tea place I found to be similar to Tapioca express and Cha for Tea. I found the price of their teas on the expensive side by more then $1 where most Tea places in the west coast have prices for large at $2.35 to $2.80 but not Bento. Bento charges $3.80. Good place to get high speed access and good place to study. read more
