I have been here a few times and I seriously just want to try everything. One of my favorite drinks is the matcha frappe, but the milk tea is also really good. I love the plum fries, get them spicy! If I'm there for a meal I always end up getting the chicken drum off the bento original section, it's just so good plus it comes with rice and some veggies as well. I gotta get the rest of my friends from Kennesaw over here to eat and drink yummy things! The staff has always been friendly and attentive, a nice bright but low key vibe in the whole place, great for a lunch with friends or just to stop by for a tasty milk tea or smoothie. I have been coming here for over a year now and have never been able to order something disappointing, not that I was trying. I was going to list a couple things to try but then I realized that I was listing the whole menu. When in doubt, just turn to the back of the menu and order from the pictures. As a Taiwanese person, I also give this place a stamp of authenticity. It's harder than you think to find Taiwanese food in a city this big. Now, even though this place is good food-wise, the real reason why I regularly drive 17mi from my house to Bento is for their bubble tea. Their bubble teas are made with real tea (not the powdered slushy mixture), the tapioca pearls are consistently good, and the price is reasonable ($15 for 4 large cups...yes, that's how many I order at at time because of the long drive). My only tip with this is that if you're unfamiliar with bubble tea, the actual 'bubbles' do not store well. So whenever I order 4, I only get 1 with tapioca and the rest I can stick in the fridge to enjoy flavored milk teas throughout the week. Woah, I couldn't believe the fellow Yelpers Joe L. and Kevin F. gave Bento such bad reviews. I have been a loyal customer of Bento since it opened 5 years ago. The quality of food has always been top-notch and consistent so I don't know what they are complaining about. I can't speak for the service but if you eat out enough you should know that even the best restaurants in town have their "off" days b/c of the staff issues. Perhaps Bento has one of these days. As matter of fact, I was there yesterday for Chinese New Year dinner. I was so blown away by one of their new dish "Fried Stinky Tofu". Oh my mother of god! I thought I've died and gone to heaven! I was so happy that I almost cried! It was THAT good! If you ever been to Taiwan and tried this famous traditional street food, you know how it should taste like and also its infamous smell. It was soooo good, crispy on the outside and just right amount of moisture inside. The cabbage was just puuuuuurfect! And I love their garlic sauce too! Price for this dish is a bit steep but I am very happy to hand them that $5.49 everytime. You get what you pay for. Great dish with great taste! One of the few traditional taiwanese based restaurant that I know of in Atlanta, so it's worth checking out if you're in the area. Cosmetically, barebone decor. Blank walls, stainless steel tables, wooden chairs, concrete cinder block dividers between tables, it's sorta industrial looking honestly. Menu is very condensed, not THAT many options but enough to have a small snack or lunch/dinner. I'd recommend the spicy nuggets as starters or a small snack and a bento drum. Get it fried, just trust me on this. The bento drum is literally a large chicken thigh that has been deep fried (it's not fried chicken though, it's different) with a side of rice and two sides (I normally get cabbage and bean sprouts). The chicken has a very crispy outside, the extra crispy skin is the best part, but the insides are still oh so moist. Couldn't be better. Another safe bet in menu item is the wonton noddle soup. Who can resist a bowl of that? Safe, savory, comfort food to me. Oh, if you still have room, try the bubble tea. Black milk or Green milk teas are always a safe bet. The tapioca here are a hit or miss sometimes on chewy-ness. But if you're looking for something tamer, try the mango green tea with lychee jelly. The parking lot here is a mess. I'm not saying asians are bad drivers, I'm just saying your chances of hitting someone or getting hit just increased exponentially here, so better be careful. read more

However, the girl's best friend, who is possibly full of more cultural pride than a middle-aged southern white man on the 4th of July after a 6 pack of Bud Light, has been telling she and I about this place for quite some time. After taking my questionably better half here a while back (and me subsequently having to hear how good it was for the past 2 years) we had to make a trip while I was in town. And it is worth it. Every single bite. The grilled pork chop over rice is ridiculous, and the fried pork chop is even more so. Also, corn for a side dish? Sign me up twice. This is an authentic Taiwanese restaurant with a spiffy street food-filled menu. It's a very casual atmosphere, although surprisingly the interior is industrial themed. Well, Cafe 101 (the other good Taiwanese restaurant) has a big dome ceiling, so what else is new? Most of the dishes are hard to find anywhere else, and mostly well prepared. Lots of signature street food staples like Mi Gao, intestine rice stick soup, cold sesame paste noodles, chicken nuggets, pig ears, and rice platters. Don't think I saw any stinky tofu though. Many dishes are difficult to translate. I feel a little handicapped to judge their food too specifically, because I haven't been to another place in Atlanta that offers a similar menu, and I generally like to compare. But as a native who's had everything on offer back in Taiwan I can say it's pretty good, and inexpensive (look, it's only 3x, not 10x what you would pay for the same stuff in Taiwan). I doubt this place would have gotten as high of an average score though if it weren't the only place of its kind. The bubble tea is good. I wouldn't say it's the best. If I have to compare this with Cafe 101, I like Cafe 101 more for the food, and give props to Bento for offering all this street food stuff. Definitely worth repeat visits. read more

Service can be slow at times because usually there's only one server even on a Friday night; however, the young gentleman that we see all the time is really nice. Portions are generous. Things to get: + Popcorn basil chicken + "Ba Wan": basically a meatloaf in a glutinous chewy rice shell covered with soy-based and spiced sauce + Beef Noodle Soup: comes in different degrees of spiciness; "Hot" was sufficient for me; noodles were not thick/chewy enough; beef was stewed very tender *thumbs up* + Potstickers: ranks up there with some of the best I've had. Chewy wrapping with crunch from pan frying + Milk tea If you have traveled to Taiwan and been to some of the places that have been around for half a century or more specializing in one of those above dishes, you will no doubt be only semi-satisfied by Bento Cafe's offerings. Continuing the search for the best bubble tea and having scheduled dinner plans with some friends in Norcross, I decided to take the opportunity to see what fellow Yelpers recommended as the best Boba outside the perimeter! We came across Bento Cafe. Drink: Great selection of bubble milk teas. I had the coffee milk tea with tapioca pearls ($2.99 for a small). I found the tapioca to be perfectly made - not too chewy. Tasted pretty fresh. My friends also had the milk tea with egg pudding mixed in and the jasmine green milk tea with tapioca ($2.59 each). We all enjoyed our Boba very much and would definitely return again. Food: They have a much bigger menu than other bubble tea places, like Quickly. We tried the bento fried nuggets ($4.99). The portion size was large - definitely large enough for 3 people. If you ask for spicy, they add some chili powder. We also tried the daily special which was pork intestine with scallions. I am always up for munching on some good intestine. I thought this dish was just ok; I probably wouldn't order it again though. Service: I have heard mixed things from other people, but I thought the service was pretty good. We did not wait long for our drinks/food and the orders were exactly as we had ordered. Granted the place was not super busy when we went, but we had no complaints with the service or the staff. Ambiance: If you accept that just about all places outside the perimeter are located in strip malls, Bento is no exception. There are mostly Vietnamese restaurants/bakeries/hair salons in this lot. Inside, there are about a dozen booths which hold about 4 people. There are also 2 long picnic-style tables in the back. There is a glass case when you enter the store displaying Asian toys and knick-knacks for sale. The only weird thing was that when we first walked in, there was a pungent odor...not sure what it was...but I think we got used to it the longer we stayed. A nice bonus is that there are piles of magazines and newspapers that you can read while you are there. And there is free wifi...some people had computers. And the staff didn't push customers out the door. I think a nice addition would be for them to have some board games for customers. Compared to other forms of Chinese cuisine, there are relatively few places serving Taiwanese food. And, among those, even fewer deliver Taiwanese food that is both tasty and authentic. Fortunately for those of us who live in Atlanta, the two most well known Taiwanese restaurants here deliver on both fronts (the other being Cafe 101). For first timers to Taiwanese cuisine, I recommend you start with the Bento Chop. Fried pork chops sounds like a southern dish, but trust me, it's not like anything you can find in the south. For those of you who are familiar with Taiwanese cuisine, they make an excellent beef noodle soup. They also have some more interesting Taiwanese offerings, such as ba-wan. Finally, I want to take a moment to mention the bubble tea here. Bubble tea originated in Taiwan. As a result, Bento Cafe is one of the few places that do it right. And as much as I enjoy most of the other places who serve bubble tea (Mozart + White Windmill being the ones I most frequent), their bubble tea is simply wrong. Bubble tea is flavored ice tea with tapioca balls. It has ICE CUBES in it. It is NOT a frozen drink, it is NOT a slushie. If you want real bubble tea, done right, try it at Bento Cafe. read more

Then feeling full after I ate my food, I told the waitress to make it to go. Notice that I did not have any sip of it. Instead of using a large-size regular to-go milk tea cup, she put my drink in a medium-size ugly-looking foam cup by throwing away the rest drink that does not fit!!! Only four words could accurately describe my feelings about Bento Cafe: I hate this place. So much so, that' it's taken me months to finally build up the composure to collect my thoughts and not let anger drive this review. Now, I've been here a couple of times. Not to mention as a somewhat Taiwanese-American (depending on my mood), the food itself is okay. The only redeeming dishes are the beef noodle soup and the fried radish cake, but everything else I've ever had there has been considerably bland. For example, the rice dishes, the oajin, the chop noodles, the wonton noodles, the bubble tea, and pretty much everything I can thing of. More so, the noodle soups are more noodle than anything else. I think the absolute worst part of Bento is the service. Again, I've been here a couple of times. Each time has come with the usual source of complaints like the general attitude and the time it takes for the food to come out. Usually, it's been tolerable, and I could be persuaded to come since my friends love it. However, never have I been so angry and offended by the level of disdain and disservice the last and final time I'll ever go. Yes, I'll concede that I was in a large group, but that's no excuse. Not only did they forget my food, but I reminded them over and over again within a 2 hour period about it. No response. Finally, after walking up and complaining to the owner, they finally got me my food, but I still waited for 30 more minutes to get it. They also forgot my full order and I only received half my order. Let me reiterate, it's been 2.5 hours. You would think at that point they would give a discount or give something for free, but they didn't until I openly complained about the terrible service. In response, they offered me a free bubble tea, which they then forgot about after I ordered it. I finally received the bubble tea when we went up and paid. The bubble tea was watery, the boba was hard, and it had no taste whatsoever. Even paying for the darned meal proved problematic. They double charged us, and then argued that it was the correct price. We ended up paying the wrong price because they wouldn't relent. What ever happened to the customer is always right? I have never been so offended by one dining experience. If you want good Taiwanese food, stick with Kampai Cafe instead. It's better tasting and the service is worlds away better. Has it really been almost 2 years since I've come back to this place? Indeed, it has. And alas, I was reminded why it has been that long since my wife and I gave this place a visit. We have no complaints about the food. We like the bento drum quite a lot, as well as their deep fried radish cakes. Super tasty. The portions actually seemed to get bigger (or perhaps my appetite has shrunk from 2 years ago), which was also a plus. But here's the kicker. SERVICE. How can the to-go orders for a large table of guests be the very last ones to be filled? (one of the orders were completely neglected- this has been a recurring theme in almost all our visits). Our friends kept waiting, and waiting- and finally asked about it- were told that the order basically got lost and that they had to wait again. What I really don't understand is why it is so difficult for waiters to serve things in order to the tables according to which tables arrived first? Especially when most people order the same things? Is it really that difficult? How come when our party is pretty much the first to arrive- we get our food last, while many other more recent guests already have their orders and have already left? We didn't order anything out of the ordinary. Just several bento chops, bento drums, perhaps a few tapioca drinks (that didn't arrive until we finished our food). Seriously? Again, I'm not knocking the food here at all, but on behalf of our friends who were left waiting forever (and basically decided to leave after about 45 minutes without their order- no apology, no nothing), we've got to swear off this place out of principle. My friend ordered chicken curry & rice. The chicken was good but the bun, I didn't like, it was a bit slimy for my taste and felt the meat was really small compared to the buns, same for the pork. The food is cheap for the quantity, although the side dishes raise an eyebrow. You would not expect corn and mashed potatoes at an Asian restaurant. My only complaint is that they ran out of the tomato and egg side that all 5 people at my table ordered... but really, you couldn't run to the market next door and splurge for a few tomatoes and a carton of eggs? I went to Bento Cafe when I was in Atlanta for a conference and went there solely based on the reviews I saw on yelp and I was TOTALLY disappointed with the food. We ordered the grilled chicken drum and the tw stir fried noodle. The food was SO oily and completely flavorless. I just saw a review from another yelper who wrote "I feel like the people who gave this place 4 starts didn't go to the same restaurant as i did."...this is exactly what I thought after trying their food. This was honestly the first time I've gone to a restaurant and took a few bits and just stopped eating. Atlanta is not known for its Taiwanese fare. As of the time of this review, there really is only one Taiwanese run establishment serving Taiwanese food. Others may do food popular to Taiwanese -- but this is the only one that I'm aware of that aims to effect that kind of taste -- that particular flavour and style. The room design of the main dining hall is spartan; concrete floors, industrial style ceiling, and unpainted metal bars. The effect is clean and spare. Lighting is flourescent, leaving the metal grays accented by occasional splashes of bright, cheerful orange. The furniture is efficient; comfortable, but far from sumptuous. A digital projector mounted from the ceiling reminds the diner that it could easily become a movie display or karaoke oriented room in a heartbeat. Taiwanese music plays at all times, recalling the myriad taiwanese heart-throbs and divas currently gracing Taipei pop charts. The owner-manager is an energetic dynamo, able to give instructions in brisk TW-styled mandarin. The workers in the kitchen are older -- most of the servers are rather young -- college age or so. Service varies depending on the visit. If there are only a few people, it's reasonably efficient. But despite the moderate physical size of the dining area, the cafeteria style seating at some of the main tables allows groups to squeeze in large numbers of people -- completely exceeding the capacity of the staff to serve efficiently. The menus are reasonably descriptive, although going with a chinese speaker would probably help. The highlights of the menu -- Chicken Drum Sticks, Pork Chop platters, the Roasted, Spicy Beef Noodles. These 3 are cornerstones of Taiwanese home cooking. None of the interpretations are earth shatteringly good... but it will recall home-cooked meals, or side street restaurants in Taiwan. Some of the other items, like the marinated tofu, Bento Chicken Nuggets -- also are standard Taiwanese dishes. Again, nothing extraordinary, but that's not Bento's aim. It's comfort Taiwanese food -- which Bento delivers solidly. The beverages are standard Taiwanese teas and fruit milks. All reasonably tasty. Assortment exceeds local standards, but falls short of NYC or LA or SF. The distance from the city center is a drawback -- no mass transit accessibility. Another area for improvement is definitely the service... it really is spotty. But, they do have a chokehold on the TW-food market in ATL. There's really no competition... :) So, it's a 4. Bento is one of my favorite restaurants. Both the Bento Chop and Bento Drum and very delicious. Great rice with pork topping, good veggies, and other Taiwanese food too. They have a lot of great shakes and bubble tea also. It is in a shopping center that is being renovated and filled in now. Happy Valley just opened a location here and I believe a new grocery store is opening as well. It is easy to miss if you are not looking as the road is very crowded and busy and right off I-85. My friend Peggy owns Bento and her mom is one of the great chefs who make the delicious food! Always clean and includes newspapers and magazines in Chinese for those interested. My new favorite place in Atlanta for Taiwanese food. Ping's inside Great Wall is great too but sometimes you just want to eat at a real restaurant instead of a food court or getting take out. Been here a couple times recently and always order my favorite Taiwanese meal- minced pork over rice. You can pick 2 of their daily veggies (tomato and egg, broccoli, bamboo shoot are ones I've been offered so far) to go with it. Their portions are just right and the minced pork is to die for. I don't like fatty meat, so I need my minced pork to be actually "minced" so that I don't see the fat, and theirs did just that. Their meat was flavorful and rich, but also light enough to not feel unhealthy (does that make sense?) I previously visited this cafe. Upon ordering milk tea with less ice, the barista put more ice and when asked to fix it, the barista offered to take out the ice and add more water. What is the point of that? The point of having less ice is to have a less watered down drink. That is why I ordered the drink with less ice. Less ice and more tea is the point. Not to have her replace the ice with water. When this concern was brought up, the waitress refused to fix the problem and simply offered multiple times to add water. Many of the items are undercooked. Takoyaki taste like cold batter, the meat over rice tastes like salted minced meat over plain rice with only sprinkles of pickes. Id say come for the drinks but even they are very pricey. Not worth the trip read more

It's probably the best Taiwanese style restaurant in Atlanta. I have been going here for many years and it almost always satisfies. Let me start off by saying there are a lot of choices for appetizers, meals and dessert! There is a wide range of familiar Taiwanese appetizers my favorites are pig ears and bean curd. My favorite rice dish is the Grilled Bento Drum which comes with two sides and rice. If you never had Beef noodle then you're in for a treat because they make a very good one! The beef noodle is equivalent to Vietnamese Pho except better :) After downing the fair portion of food that you ordered you can always order bubble tea that is one of the best in town! Not that crap you find at many pho restaurants.. Oh and don't forget to try their snacks such as Salt and pepper nuggets aka Bento nuggets or Gua Bao and one of my favorites Ba Wan which is an acquired taste but is very good. It is a translucent dough with stuffing and sauce. This is usually pretty hard to find in restaurants! Just don't get carried away because the bill can add up quickly! read more

The most authentic Taiwanese restaurant at Atlanta area in my opinion. The dishes they offer are commonly found on the streets in Taiwan, but *not* those bizarre foods with Andrew Zimmern you saw on the Travel channel. To some, you may be disappointed. The owners are very creative in introducing new dishes once in a while. The dining atmosphere is totally different from a stereotypical American Chinese restaurant. For starters, try their grilled or fried chicken drum stick. I have yet encountered larger or tastier drum sticks anywhere else. read more

I used to be a big fan of Bento, because they had the best boba [until I discovered Quickly, that is]. They can make you any kind of drink you want. I usually like to mix up flavors for my boba drinks [try mango-pineapple!]. The tapioca is usually always soft and yummy. When it comes to their fruit drinks, Bento's are better than Quickly's, but generally, I like Quickly more. Bento's food is pretty decent, but it's not something I like eating regularly. It is a pretty good hang-out spot, as well. Overall, I think the drinks are the best thing about Bento. They do share a huge parking lot with Happy Valley and HongKong market, so that can be a major pain in the butt on the weekends. read more
