This place is a very solid 3/5. Not a 4. Not a 2. But it's a 3. Let me start by saying WOW Kebab was closed for some odd reason today. They're always open. Weird. But this is what finally led me to try Bereket. I live within walking distance and it's always piqued my interest, but I never wanted to be disloyal to WOW, so I'd never actually tried it. Well, WOW wasn't open, so today was the day. I ordered what I would normally get from WOW: the shawarma platter. I thought I ordered chicken, but I guess I hit the wrong thing and ended up with lamb. I like lamb, so I'm not deducting any points for that. My bad. First off, the portion is massive. Definitely bigger than WOW's, with the actual pieces of meat being much larger and more substantial. My big gripe with that, though, is that the huge pieces make it kind of difficult to mix everything together without food falling everywhere. You basically have to lift the meat up, dig down to the rice underneath, move some rice onto another plate, then put the meat back on top to make the whole thing manageable. Quite a tedious process. I'd probably layer everything differently so it's easier to actually eat. The rice was probably the weakest part. There was WAY too much of it, it was overcooked and pretty bland, and you basically get a ginormous mountain. It was split between plain white rice and some sort of brown/spicy-ish orange-reddish rice. Whatever the second one was, I definitely liked it more than the white rice. My biggest complaint isn't even the rice, though. For a platter this big, you HAVE to give more sauce. One tiny little cup of tzatziki just isn't going to cut it with that much food. I'd put some directly on top of the platter and still give a bigger portion on the side. The salad, not gonna lie, was a bit pathetic. It felt like it was just kind of thrown together and didn't add much to the dish. I was hoping it would provide a nice veggie/fresh element to balance out the giant pile of meat and rice, but it really didn't. I was also going to say the dish could use some heat, but WOW (not the other restaurant), that pepper is SPICY. It's good when eaten with bites of everything else, but still... I could've used some red sauce or hot sauce drizzled over the whole thing. Finally, I was a little disappointed that the platter came with pita instead of lavash. WOW feels more Turkish to me, whereas this felt more Greek, especially with the massive gyro-style pieces of meat and pita bread. Overall, I'm not mad at it. It was tasty, the portion is enormous, and there were definitely things I liked. But with Bereket being more expensive than WOW, I'm not sure I'd get this platter again. For the higher price, there were just too many little things that didn't quite live up to par. Solid 3/5. read more

Nice tile and decor! This place is fine. It's my second time here and it just doesn't come close to the flavor and quality of the Bereket at the gas station. That one is kind of hard to get to but if you have a taste for Turkish, that restaurant rules. We went to this one on a Saturday afternoon. There was one table full and us and the air staff spent more time chatting with each other than checking in with us. The hummus was fine. The babaganoush was pretty good, and the other 2 tomato paprika based apps were solid MEH. Same with the pita. It was fine. Husband got rice and kabobs. He ate the meh kabobs and said the rice wasn't worth taking home. I took my leftovers home but I haven't touched them, which says a lot. Not worth it. read more

I ordered the Doner lunch special for takeout. When I picked up my order I realized that this is an inviting place I would like to dine in at next time. It looked very nice. Only street parking as far as I could tell. My order was ready on time. The doner meat was moist and pleasant tasting-actually addictive. I devoured it! The portion of meat and rice and something else in a tomoatoey sauce was plentiful and delicious. It also came with a nice little accompanying salad with oil and vinegar. Pita was great! I wanted more. Reasonably priced for lunch, generous portions, great flavors. I like the vegetarian options available on the menu and will be sure to try the eggplant dishes. The desserts sound delightful. I look forward to soon eating at the restaurant and will be ordering take out again. No doubt. read more

Wow what a great find! I was out for another solo dinner since the wife wasn't feeling good. I wanted to try something new and a place that hopefully had some flavor. I was not disappointed. I started with the white bean salad which was a large plate with fresh onions, tomatoes, fresh parsley and a light but flavorful dressing over soft, tender but not mushy white beans. It is a traditional plate in many cultures but they definitely got it right. I then had the gyro shawarma plate which had delicious lamb slices, fresh green salad, two kinds of rice, and a roasted jalapeño and tomato. Along the side they gave me a basket of toasted pita bread that was soft and fresh. The pistachio baklava at the end was fantastic- best I've had. The staff were like eating at a relative's house. They wanted to make sure I was comfortable even though I chose to sit at the bar. I'm guessing not many people eat at the bar. What a great spot! read more

In Turkey, there is an expression of national pride. It goes like this: "Ne mutlu Türkum diyeni" which means "How happy is one who says I am Turkish." After eating here, I'd modify that expression (made courtesy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk) to reflect my experience at Bereket. "Ne mutlu Bereket'te yiyene!" "Happy is he who eats at Bereket" Over the years I've eaten at many Turkish restaurants across the USA, and always compare them to my ten years of experience living and eating in Turkey. My bar is high. Most, with the exception of some in NYC are off the mark. Bereket on Fairfield Ave in Bridgeport is one of the rare establishments. Each of our ordered dishes were delicious, well prepared, and well presented. It was a hot evening so we stuck with some cold meze choices. Started with Imambayildi, (it means "So good the Imam fainted") eggplant stuffed with onion, red pepper, green pepper, tomato, pine nuts and currants, some Cacik, really delicious and cold yogurt, garlic, cucumber, dill and mint, Çoban salata, my all-time favorite with diced cucumber, tomato, onion, parsley, feta cheese, olive oil, and some yaprak sarma, better known as grape leaves, stuffed with rice, onion, parsley, pine nuts and their Turkish spice blend. I did get two hot orders of Sigara börek, paper thin dough rolled like a cigarette (cigar thickness really) with beyaz peynir or white cheese. Very tangy, crunchy, and tasty. People are often fond of saying the Greek Feta for all white cheeses, but Turkish is distinctly more tangy and more delicious in my opinion. We ordered cold Ayran to wash it all down with. On a hot day, Ayran, yogurt and water mixed, is a first class thirst quencher. No you say? Try it. It's also great for digestion, I like it extra salty so I always add some table salt when it arrives. Finally, we had among the very best Baklava I've ever had. There's a balance of just enough crispness with a saturation point of the syrup that is hard to achieve for most Baklava bakers. Bereket had done a spectacular job with theirs. All this writing is making me hungry. For Turkish food. I've got a reservation for 6 as we speak. I'm looking forward to having their Iskender Kebap. Another review to follow. Excellent appetizers. Delicious and plentiful. Lovely service. Just make sure if you get meat tell them if you want medium Rare or rare because it seemed overcooked. Waitress was lovely and offered to remake but we were in a rush. I will return if for no other reason than delicious appetizers and kind service. I don't often stumble across places that I feel compelled to wax poetic about but Bereket definitely hit the mark for us in that regard! We came in on Saturday for our anniversary to have dinner. The restaurant was empty (but there were pick-up orders going out) so we had a nice, quiet ambiance and were able to really immerse ourselves in the food. For starters we had the cold mixed appetizer, which was a combination of hummus, baba ghanoush, eggplant salad, sauced eggplant, and a hot pepper dip all served with steaming fresh pita. We LOVED this and both agreed that it was absolutely delicious. The hot pepper dip was amazing but as a true eggplant lover I was absolutely blown away by how delicious the sauced eggplant was (this was also my boyfriends favorite). We also split the sigara borek, which is a light and crispy phyllo dough wrapped feta. It was amazing and I'm already thinking of having it again! For mains my partner had the beef shish kebab and I had something new, which was the lamb adana kebab with yogurt. The lamb was a ground meat mixture served on top of pieces of pita, smothered in a tangy, rich sauce, and served with fresh yogurt on the side. It was amazing and my boyfriend enjoyed it too! Now, for the best part, dessert! The owner of the restaurant, upon hearing it was our anniversary, gave us two complimentary desserts and their well wishes! It was so kind and really made our day. Despite being so full we could pop we ate every bite of both the baklava and the caramelized milk pudding they served to us. It was super delicious with the hot black tea we ordered. Overall for everything we spend around $65 - which is SUPER reasonable for how much food we had! - and tipped 50% because the service was just *that* good. We thank the owners and staff of Bereket for the amazing experience we had and the wonderful impact that they had on our day. We are already planning another trip because I am eyeballing the manti dumplings they have on their menu. :) read more

what's going on here? ordered thru Grubhub, lamb adana and falafel. It arrives and it is essentially two rubber rods, obviously cooked hours before and left to get hard and rubbery....and the falafels were hockey pucks. this place used to be good. the past few deliveries from Bereket have been way below what it was previously. something is going on here and like other places around here it's sub par to say the least. another place going to the dogs. truly disheartening. read more

Bereket is a wonderful staple in the area. My last review was 5 years ago - I don't even get how that can be. Baba ghanoush is a standout and I adore their salads. Sometimes I'll bring wine, today at lunch I didn't and instead enjoyed a Turkish tea. Grilled pita is spot on as is basically anything to order on the menu. They have an outdoor seating area too which is always a nice addition. Support your local businesses please! I always enjoy going to Black Rock. read more

Jonesing for Turkish food, we found Bereket on Yelp, and we couldn't have been more pleased. Our waitress was attentive without being overly hawkish, and the food was great! We got the doner gyro and adana platters. The meat was delicious, and gyro, in particular, came with a very large quantity. Both platters came with two types of rice, a salad, and pita, as well. The falafel was a little less impressive; the outer fried crust was a little hard to cut into and had a flattened texture. Wasn't my favorite, but the main platters definitely made up for it. I was upset that some of the dishes (very important dishes of Turkish cuisine) are served only for lunch and they are not prepared for dinner to order. What a surprisingly nice experience. Better than I expected. Warm friendly and prompt service. The thick strong Turkish coffee and moist delicate baklava are a must so save room. The Falafal are patties rather than balls but are crunchy and flavorful. M-F lunch is $9 and the portions are HUGE. The grilled lamb chops were certainly the highlight! But the grilled tender chicken shish was perfect. The plate consists of ample portions of rice pilaf, crunchy fresh tomato & cucumber salad, tomato & herb rice, and grilled jalepeno. We ordered takeout and went for the family sized bulk order. For $60, we had so much food that all 6 people had leftovers for the next day's lunch. Weirdly, the rice was somehow one of the tastiest parts (is it butter), but EVERYTHING - the hummus and other spreads tray, the meets, the falafel, the pita...it was all extremely tasty, and came with salad! The only thing I wish we had (which I realize is not Turkish, so that's probably why it wasn't included) was feta. Otherwise, 5/5 amazing food, fast service and a great deal. read more

This review should be cross linked with the Bereket Deli on Main Street, Bridgeport. Just opened approximately two weeks ago, this is a great improvement. The owner was very lucky to snag the old Helados Vazquez place which was beautifully decorated already with colourful tiles and wood finish. The owner, Selahattin, is a short, older Kurdish/Turkish gentleman with a great personality and even better food. Why didn't I give four stars? This location is a full service location and I wasn't overly impressed with the staff. The kitchen was more welcoming and helpful than they were but that's because the staff was hired for the restaurant recently and the kitchen was the old crew from Main Street so are maybe more dedicated. read more

8/31/13 -- Bereket has been under new management for about the past 6 months, so I am updating my review and giving them 5 stars. We remember the new owner Sule from the early days when the place first opened. She was the server we always hoped we would get, as she was very warm, friendly, efficient and spoke English well, while some of the others were not so great (to put it mildly). Sule and her husband have taken over the place from the previous owner and kept everything we loved about Bereket while correcting some of the problems Bereket had before with inconsistent service. The grilled food is still amazing. See comments below on what we like best. The menu has not changed and the kitchen has maintained the high standards that keep us coming back to Bereket several times a month. I also recommend a hot appetizer call 'mucver' (zucchini fritters) and a baked custard dessert called 'kazandibi'. Congratulations Sule! May you prosper long in Black Rock! 9-7-2011 -- Okay, we have now been to the new Bereket more times than we can count, usually just two of us, a few times with bigger groups, so this is my updated review. We've sampled pretty much everything on the menu, and here's what we think. The food is consistently delicious, if you know what to order. They do an amazing job on anything grilled. The portions are incredibly generous. We especially like the grilled branzino (whole fish with head and tail), salmon kabobs and a dish called Chicken Izgara (deboned chicken legs, skinless, marinated and grilled to perfection). We really like the mixed appetizer plate -- very tasty and a great value. The desserts are lovely. And the Turkish tea is to die for! We've been disappointed whenever we've tried the main dishes that do not come off the grill. I've lowered my rating from 5 stars to 3 mainly because of the service. On a good night, the Bereket staff are warm, friendly, helpful and attentive. On a bad night (and we've had more bad nights than good lately) they can be unbelievably neglectful, careless and even a bit rude. One evening -- when they had plenty of staff on hand and not many tables full -- we waited half an hour for someone to take our order. And then they had the nerve to make us feel rushed to eat and get out of there fast so they could close up and go home! This was especially disappointing because we had brought out-of-town guests and wanted to show them a good time. (Btw, we had called ahead several days before and let them know we were coming with a party of 6, but apparently they lost our reservation.) We used to go to Bereket at least once every week or two, but after several consecutive bad experiences with the service, we've stopped going so often. When they first opened, they were packed every night and turning away people who didn't want to wait. Lately it seems they are not nearly so busy, so I suspect others like us have become disenchanted. 12-20-2010 -- I actually haven't been here yet but I loved their hole-in-the-wall place behind the gas station in downtown Bridgeport and am pleased to see they're going a bit more upscale now with a nice new location in Black Rock. I will post a more detailed review after I've eaten at the new Bereket, which I hope will be very soon! Looking forward to hearing what others have to say ... read more
