As a Black man from poverty I struggled with connecting with coaches and/or teachers. Far too often I was told to not be so aggressive or tone down. Berg granted me the freedom to be myself. He helped me open up about the the trauma in my life and coached me through it bringing my piece along with it. Like he says "two trains running at the same time." I've been a student at the studio for 10+ yrs and I promise you, I would not have continued to attend class if I didn't think it was worth the time, money or effort. Berg has been extremely crucial in elevating my technique/skill set from the very beginning, when I had no training at all. He helped me find a way to deeply personalize material and empowered me to make bold choices in my acting where I could have the most fun. He also taught me how to analyze a script in a way that is physical and personal. Ego leaves the door when you walk into class, and I have felt so much genuine support from him and my classmates over the years. I didn't continue classes here for very long. First off, they pressure you to take the bootcamp which I found a waste of time because it's just a lecture. It had some interesting ideas however all of it can be read in acting books. Class to me, especially a bootcamp for learning the basics, should be more one on one. There were maybe 70 students at bootcamp just sitting in chairs taking notes. Also, it always felt condescending. Like we've been idiots this whole time until we got there. It's never considered that we as actors could bring stuff to the table even as we learn, or that we've actually had decent training before elsewhere and are just furthering our education. We are talked at most of the time in bootcamp, no actor really gets to share their thoughts or opinions. This isn't medical school, it's art. Let the student be a part of their own learning and feel comfortable enough to share their opinion or if they are confused about something. Student seemed mostly scared. When I took an ongoing class, the teaching seemed to contradict what Berg was teaching in bootcamp and it got me really confused. Every scene had the same critique by the teacher and it was wishy washy and always just basically telling us to let go and surrender. Almost ever scene the teacher would tell us to do some sort of random exercise in the scene, for no purpose, just cause we are "just playing around". But we didn't know what that really meant, we needed to be taught in a more pragmatic way. The only time a student would seem to show good work was when they got overly emotional and cried, so for my scene one day I just tried fake crying and only then was I told that the scene was "beautiful". I wish it was, but it really wasn't in my opinion. Everything was over the top, untruthful, and seemed more like an attempt at being an actor's therapy (which is incredibly mentally dangerous), instead of teaching useful methods of breaking down a scene, becoming a character, and staying truthful. We were asked private questions about our lives in order to elicit real feelings from us. I could sense the teacher's frustration when I purposefully wasn't sharing personal details because I didn't want him ripping my life open to re-experience traumatic events just for the sake of the scene. That's not what Berg seems to teach in his bootcamp so why are we doing that in ongoing? It was inconsistent. They weren't necessarily wrong with their critiques all the time but the methods to make us better were not okay, in my opinion. One class I started a new scene with someone and we didn't get even two sentences in when we were told to stop and do it again but this time incorporate an exercise. After we did it, the teacher said "See? Wasn't that so much better!" And I kept asking "compared to what? Because we didn't even get through the scene once before doing this exercise." Was the exercise itself bad, no - I really enjoy that exercise. But I didn't know what I was supposed to be learning when I couldn't even show my work initially. I wasn't sure what the point was of me doing any work on the scene beforehand if it was just going to be messed with by the teacher immediately in class. Let actors show their work and then work with them, in a healthy way, to make the scene better. That was my last class cause I just had enough. I think the studio is introducing this now but it's a shame that the classes don't have anything on-camera. This is a TV & Film town and first we need to learn how to audition well for the camera. If we don't nail that, we will never get the opportunity to really act. I think a camera should really be in every class except for any that might be theater focused. Lastly, if anyone wanted to take the class for free, they honestly could. Just walk into the bootcamp or an ongoing cause they don't really pay attention to attendance. When I first got into the ongoing, there was no introduction or "do we have any new students" so I didn't know what was going on exactly. As I took the class and other new students came in, they had the same confusion. Ongoing should really work month to month the way you pay for it so that at the beginning of the month the teacher can have that first class for new student monologues and just saying "hello, welcome to the class". It's sad how basic that is and how that is missing. I found tidbits useful in this class, but the teachers felt like the kind that could inadvertently be emotionally abusive. While I felt fine after, I could definitely see someone else being very emotionally hurt by this school. The only teacher who seemed to really care about the students understanding and their emotional wellbeing was Adrienne. I'm studying somewhere else now, but I feel this studio, at least right now, could do more harm to it's actors than good. But I hope it eventually gets to a good place and I can consider classes there again someday. read more

I wanted to leave a review in part as a response to the views on Berg expressed anonymously. Some background: I am a person of color, born and raised in another country, and a trained actor; these days I'm primarily a director whose work has appeared at high-profile festivals in the United States and abroad. I've attended classes with Berg to learn more about the craft as a director who works with actors. I've audited the classes of many acting teachers and coaches at other schools; nobody is better at what he does than Berg. I was present on both occasions referenced in the review by Hardworking A. During the classes the review referenced, Berg was discussing industry trends generally; it's vital that actors be given insight into industry cycles, and it's not something that many people with insider knowledge are willing to share for fear of exactly the kind of reactions/misinterpretations below, but Berg genuinely cares about his students and wants them to be informed and prepared. During these classes, Berg acknowledged and lamented that generations of actors of color in film and theater faced insurmountable odds and far greater discrimination than anything white actors are facing now. He consistently emphasizes how great it is that actors, regardless of their race, gender, orientation, or nationality, now have opportunities to tell their stories. I've audited and worked with Berg for months now. I like him and have found him authentic, charming, and unguarded but not in any way offensive. As a director and actor of color, my take for what's it's worth comes down to this: Berg is one of the greats; I recommend him. read more

I have a drama degree and have experience in the film industry in both London and Los Angeles- I've encountered high-quality acting programs in universities, colleges, and private studios, and Berg is among the absolute best there is. The technique taught at the Berg Studios is the same one taught at the Yale School of Drama. It challenges the intellect and allows one's creativity to grow and flourish. I was looking for an acting class like two years ago, when a friend of mine mentioned that a teacher at our English school was attending one. When I asked this person "Is he good?" She said "He has just been selected the best scene study teacher by Backstage." "Wow, must be really good" although I had no idea what Backstage was back then - I was an international student and new in the industry, blame it on that.- I asked for the Studio's contact number and later on called him. My first phone conversation with Berg was really memorable, he was funny and witty, had a sense of humour, the kind that I amused me. When I first visited one of his classes the following day, I was amazed by the professional atmosphere. It was a complete new world waiting to be explored. I saw great actors playing great scenes. Berg was passionate. His knowledge was deep. After months of training, I saw my work change in my body, I wasn't acting consciously anymore. I was just having fun, living my fantasies on stage. I found Berg Studios through Backstage.com at a time when I was desperate to find a decent acting teacher who know their stuff. When I saw all of the working actors who chose to work with Berg, despite so many other choices for acting teachers in LA, (you throw a rock and you'll hit one, seriously), I knew I had to sit in for an audit. I was expecting a tough critic right from the off, but what I didn't know was that not just anyone can waltz in there off the street and hope to be taught by Mr. Berg. So when he decided to allow me to join his class after years of not being in an acting class, I was quite flattered. I won't lie to you. It's not easy being in an acting class. Least of all one that's based in theatre. And Mr. Berg is quite the tough critic. But he KNOWS his stuff. And if you want to make it in this business, you have to be willing to have your pride hurt a little. Now, I'm not saying he sits there and verbally abuses you; but he gives you constructive criticism that will be essential in honing your acting technique. And everything he says makes sense, so you can apply it, right then and there, and see exactly the results he's trying to get you to achieve. He finds that creative little piece of you that is essentially You, and he brings it out into the light so it can strut its stuff and show everyone what it's made of. After studying with Greg Berg for nearly 2 months, I can say, without hesitation, that Greg is THE BEST acting coach in Los Angeles. The fact that there is even one review that's less than 5 stars is REALLY surprising. After wasting so much time with so many disingenuous industry people, it's refreshing to share company with someone who is: 1.) A master of his craft and 2.) A truly gifted teacher that actually gives a sh*t about each of his students as it relates to their growth and success. If you've studied at other studios, you know this personal quality is an extremely rare attribute in L.A. Greg takes times to graciously (and patiently - in my case) explain the unexplainable in way that's immediately relatable (Make sense? Clear?). You'll begin class with a loose understanding of a concept BUT you'll walk out with the ability to apply that concept (now a "tool") to your work. You can't ask for more than that! As a student in any of the group classes you'll work EVERY week and are free to audit any other class on the schedule. Don't expect gimmicks or shortcuts with Berg. Greg teaches the fundamentals: script analysis, objectives (super, plot, scene etc.), obstacles, space, physicality, language and a host of other areas that the majority of the so-called "coaches" in this town don't (or won't) teach because they (themselves) don't practice it or worse, it's too complicated or "unnecessary" - I call bullsh*t! Life is complicated and so is ART! The other students are extremely friendly and supportive (once they know you're committed) and the learning environment is extremely comfortable. I have NO idea what the hell the previous reviewer is talking about. His classes are filled with working actors who are there for one reason: To grow. That said, Berg won't put up with excuses - He takes his job extremely seriously and YOU SHOULD TOO! I drive from Orange County every week to study with this guy (2 1/2 hours each way), in rush hour - up hill, both ways! If you live in L.A. you have no excuse. In closing: This school is the real deal, gang - and bonus - Greg is surprisingly inexpensive for the results he delivers. I am incredibly grateful for finding Berg studios during the pandemic. I am a Chicago-based actor who was looking for top-notch training during a less than top-notch year. Berg's focus on imagination has inspired my work as an actor and filmmaker tremendously. I'm a producer-director and recently was invited to attend one of the evening classes at Berg Studios by an actor friend. It's held at the wonderful ol' Hayworth Theater near downtown LA. I've been to many LA acting classes and the quality of the teaching has a wide range. This class was great, high quality and professional. The vibe was good in the room. Actors are there not to hang out and socialize, but roll up their sleeves and get down to work. Gregory Berger is a passionate and clear instructor teaching real-world craft and practical methods for actors. I am so grateful for the Maestro. He is the most passionate teacher I have ever met, and I used to train teachers to coach cheerleading so I've met a few - hundred. He really cares, but does not coddle. He has a sixth sense about what each individual needs and tells you specifically how to achieve it. I'm fairly new to The Berg Studios, but in the short time i have been working with "the berg" I've noticed a major shift in my acting work. All i had to do was watch one class and i felt like the way he was teaching was specifically designed for the acting problems i was having. Four classes in and this is the best studio I've studied at. The teachers have studied at Yale or Julliard and you can see it. They are consistent across the board so if a teacher is sick, the teacher replacing him/her will teach you the same thing. Unlike many other places, teachers are not just some actors trying to make ends meet. They actually know how to teach properly with passion and compassion. Yet they know how to push your buttons if need be. Scene work is considered a rehearsal and not a performance. So if you're looking for a class where you can fix your frustration with not getting work, then it's not the class for you. Instead, the teacher interrupts to fix things you're doing wrong and give you the tools to apply immediately. Did my research, asked around and audited - very happy with my decision and have been taking classes here for a year now. I will say that you will be challenged, you have to do your homework, and sacrifices (missing my Niner footballs games) will have to be made. But, that's the dream we are chasing, it wouldn't be worth it if it were easy. I will also say that I had to break my ego down and trust the studio's process. I had some doubts during the first few months, but when I realized that I was holding myself back, it was then that I felt some break throughs like never before. I was referred to Berg by a fellow student on the set of a high profile film. She raved about him, so when I moved to LA from NY, I knew I had to check out his scene study class. I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to find a strong acting class in LA that wouldn't be gimicky or based on tricks. From the audit, I knew Berg's class was just what I'd been looking for. Berg incorporates a lot of the techniques that are taught at Yale Drama, where he also studied. He emphasizes physicality and imagination, instead of "being subtle" or "doing nothing." As he says, Daniel Day Lewis isn't subtle, is he? I'm using myself more than ever and feeling confident in my auditions. I'm booking work, which I haven't for a while as I've put too much pressure on myself in that audition room. I am a Director. I am not an actor. However, I was interested taking an acting class to allow me to more fully understand actors, and tailor my directing and methods to their process and worldview. This empathy is essential when working with actors. I have audited a variety of the Name Brand Acting Classes. In my search for the best place for me to study the craft of acting, none impressed me as much, nor provided such rich insight into Technique and Process as Berg's Studio. Berg has pedigree. He studied with Paul Mann, a Member of the Group Theater (Paul Mann studied with Michael Chekhov, and worked extensively with Elia Kazan) Berg also studied and received his degree from Yale School of Drama, which is the second best Theatre School in the world, this year as ranked by The Hollywood Reporter. Berg's professional Broadway resume is equally impressive. In a post-modern world that ridicules authority, let the wise hear: Pedigree matters; unbroken chains of study and mastery matter. Practical Knowledge that cannot be taught through books are passed from teacher to student. Brilliant minds usually choose brilliant pupils as their Legacy. In this way, the industry is able to self-replicate at a high level, much like what the DGA, or IATSE succeeds in doing by making it difficult to join the local unions. It is a self-regulated seal of approval. Berg is a brilliant actor, and a talented teacher. He will occasionally demonstrate his own talents as teaching points. The old adage of "those who can't do, teach" does not apply. He is a very personal, and invested teacher who cares deeply for his students and is very passionate about their individual progress. He shares personal anecdotes from his own life that serve to emphatically underscore the important knowledge that he desires to impart. He teaches the Yale methods and techniques. Every term, exercise, and method are straight out of one of the world's greatest programs. The fellow students are great. Especially the kids in the Tuesday Night "Masters Class". Most of the faces in that room are people you may have seen before on various TV shows, commercials, and Films. You may not know their names, but you will sit their wondering why everyone seems so familiar! They are all incredibly talented, and I would consider it a privilege to work with any of those fine men and women. While I am not an actor, I have gained some basic skills. Basically, I no longer suck horribly. Now, I am merely mediocre. WIth more work, effort, and expert guidance, I shall continue to grow toward my potential. While I may have no future as an Actor, Studying with Berg shall certainly continue to grow my knowledge and understanding of Acting, The Industry, and the fundamental natures of Humanity, for what is acting but a study of Humanity and the Human Condition? As I apply what I have learned about acting in my continuing journey of discovery and exploration, and as I translate the knowledge and empathy I've gained to my directing, I discover my effectiveness and skills have greatly grown. I have gained powerful, new insights into the craft, and my eye has sharpened. Having this Ivy League derived background is allowing me to tweak and nuance my actor's performances with greater dexterity and deftness. In my year with Berg I have not only gone from not booking to booking, but I have been reintroduced to the joy of this work. The first time I met Berg my manager sent me to coach with him. After completing my theater training at a conservatory in New York, I moved to LA. A few years ago, I was in search of finding a class that could bridge the gap between my theater training and film/TV. Berg allowed me to audit a class where I found him to be spot on and very honest with his critiques. At the same time, he was so devoted to each student that it seemed as though he might have known them personally. Not to mention, a bright bubbly and sometimes zany personality which instantly engages you and makes love him from the very start. One thing that I love about Berg is that he brings his real-life set experience to the classroom. There are many teachers in LA that haven't been on set in years (or ever for that matter) and therefore teach in a bubble. Berg treks back-and-forth from set (often from other states/countries) to teach class on a weekly basis. He makes this sacrifice because he feels it's his duty to bring what he works on or learns with his famous clients on set to his students who need to continue to learn from him. Berg is ever working to use his experience as a Yale acting Professor to find innovative and creative ways to get to the heart of a scene through your imagination. I also love that Berg discusses the business side of the industry in class. He has been able to keep his finger on the pulse of industry trends. Yes!! Just like any other industry, this industry has trends and one needs to be honest with actors about this fact. While Berg is brutally honest about these trends, he lovingly empowers us with the tools to navigate, ride through and surpass any trend that the industry presents. Berg Studios has become a safe place where I am able to learn and discover. As an ethnic actress, finding that sense of security is no easy feat in Los Angeles where your type may be misunderstood, underserved or disregarded in an acting class. It is enlightening to see that Berg continuously embraces inclusion and diversity throughout his classes and staff, as far as color, race, nationality, age, sexual orientation, etc. , throughout the many years that I've known him. I am further impressed by his ability to honestly address the differences that lie in each of us as opposed to other teachers who may avoid them like the plague for fear of retribution. He teaches us to use our differences as tools to deepen our abilities as actors. Imagine that!!! The differences amongst us may be the very factor that allows us to book a job. One of the most beautiful transformations in scene work that I've witnessed in his class was when he instructed students to recite scenes in their native tongue's to find their own personal meaning of the words. I've seen this work seamlessly in separate scenes with students who were Mexican, Ethiopian and Australian. Needless to say, Berg is a gem! When it comes down to it, you can't get much better than a Yale grad as a teacher. Actors such is Frances McDormand and Meryl Streep, along with many others have graduated from the Yale School of Drama as well. I have been in Bergs class for almost two years now and I can say that I have never met anyone as passionate about acting as he is. Anyone who audits his class can see that immediately. His passion inspires and motivates me, as do his strong critiques and guidance. He doesn't guide everyone the same way though. He teaches everyone specifically based on who they are and where they are at in the work. He has the ability to pin point your characteristics of your personality and make them shine in your work, therefore being yourself in the given circumstance which is what acting should be. Not becoming someone's puppet. If you are looking to learn the true art of acting this is the place to be. It will strengthen you as an actor, and also as a person. This class has changed my life. After studying with a plethora of teachers in LA and across the country I can confidently say Berg is the best. He's a sweet (not to mention hilarious) man who cares so deeply about his students. The Berg Studios is as good as it gets. I spent a lot of time researching, auditing and just not finding the right fit at different acting classes all around Los Angeles. He throws the gimmicks out the window and gets down to the bare bones of repeatable technique. The best part about the class is that there is no promises of glory, just promises that everyone will get to work in every class, and always get constructive criticism aimed at improving your skills as an actor. The atmosphere of the class is always upbeat, and supportive, everyone there is there to work just as hard as you are and if they aren't they don't last long. I know people who study here that really enjoy it, so I audited one of Berg's classes. Berg is a sharp guy, he knows his stuff. He tended to focus on personalizing need, which is important, and also emphasized the importance of things like voice, which I think is great. That being said, most of what I saw him teach and heard him say you can get from many other places. And at times the class seemed to be more about him teaching then the students learning. In the end, I just didn't think it was for me. Then...a few days later I get a call from Berg asking if I was interested in signing up. That's fine. Actually, it's wonderful that he personally reaches out to potential students. I tried to politely say no, "it's not what I'm looking for," but he pushed for specifics, and ended up giving them to him. At that point, he became very upset and started talking down to me. Then he hung up. Not cool. A few days later, I hear from my friend who invited me to audit that Berg told him I was arrogant, and that I was acting inappropriately during the audit. The arrogant thing I'll except, but I'm NEVER anything but attentive and professional in a classroom. That was just spite. Just my experience. read more

I took classes here for a month, simply hoping to learn something new, hoping to learn new things, really just eager and hungry to learn. I got exactly what I was hoping for. Just to get this out of the way; I'm an actor who's starting to get in the work and auditions regularly (every week) for VO or theatrical projects (TV/streaming(Netflix) shows & movies). I really felt like I needed to up my craft, like there was something I was missing. I didn't know what I was looking for but I knew what I didn't want (based on other classes I audited). My 4 weeks at the Berg Studios (and I recommend taking more classes than 4, I only had a month due to travels) was what I knew I needed but didn't know I needed. Because I applied myself every week and got up on stage to work every week (with a scene partner who gave it his all too for 3 classes, first week I did a monologue) we learned something in every class, our scene improved drastically and we became stronger actors, actors with a better sense of craft. I could say more but I really do recommend this studio to anyone looking for a place to learn what the craft of acting is, this isn't a quick and easy fix (although all the instructors are so good that if you're eager to learn and you're truly interested in learning, they get to it pretty quickly every time) it's more of a journey of discovering what acting is and along the way you improve by applying that understanding in your own work too. Berg is an amazing teacher! Before moving to Los Angeles, I took classes at Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and NYU Tisch, and the classes do NOT compare to Berg's classes. Berg really teaches you everything from the foundation, pretty much the basics you need in order to act. He makes it a requirement for everyone to take boot camp, and although the classes are pricey, I think they are really worth it! read more

I only audited this class but I was turned off by the massive amount of phone calls I received to take the class. The class was fine, the teacher did like to say " Ok? Good? Got it? - ALOT. He did bring out some good stuff in the actors but I could not bear sitting in that class for three hours listening to GOOD? GOOD? GOT IT? a million times. read more

Let me preface this by saying I have been taking acting classes for four years. To some people that is moderate amount to others it's a long time. Either way, I feel it's a enough time to give me a somewhat seasoned BS meter. If that's not enough though, I want you all to know that I take my career very seriously. Before studying with Berg, I researched at least 50 acting schools, colleges, etc. I learned about not only the general process taught but the specific ways the teachers delivered it. I asked friends that I knew, I audited, I talked to the teachers, I read reviews, and the list goes on. For me, training is an integral part of my career because I believe an artist should never stop learning and growing. So, taking my career seriously means researching the person in which I'm willing to invest money. Plus, who wants to waste a bunch of money? I know I don't unless I'm getting a return! :) That being said, Berg is NOT teaching you how to act. He's teaching you how to be an architect. Through his style, he's giving you the knowledge it takes to build a nuanced and compelling version of yourself within the context of the script. That's skill that doesn't come from vanity or fake reviews or "the next big thing" but from hard, detailed work that he has put in to get here. But that's not enough, is it? Someone can have all of the knowledge, work ethic, charisma, etc but that doesn't mean they can connect with you. The difference with Berg is that his personal NEED is to connect with you so he can develop you. That's a truly great coach. After all, teaching is not just head knowledge but the ability to enlighten a student on their level and take them higher. In order to do that, one has to connect with them so they can understand what suits them best. Personally, one of my blocks was being trapped in a certain idea of how a character was supposed to be performed. While I could often let go in that context, I was never fulfilled from my art. I was locked in a what I now call a rigid mindset. Berg opened my eyes. He made acting about discovery by giving me the necessary tools to keep creating. Now, I feel like each character is a never ending journey. It's fun! I feel like my work matters and the idea of personal potential has been shattered because I realize the sky is the limit for me. I don't say that in pride, I say it in gratitude- a gratitude born of artistic freedom. ALL OF THAT TO SAY...I highly recommend Berg. If you haven't tried his classes, give them a shot and stay with it. Most importantly, remember that growing pains are hard sometimes. Don't just walk away from there because you were embarrassed by your performance, stressed out by the challenge of class, your pride was hurt, or whatever it may be. That starts the dangerous cycle of quitting something because it's not always comfortable and self serving. The bottom line is: We're all human and we're all on a journey. If you stay with this class, you'll be a better and harder working actor for it. You'll see growth in time. Nothing feels better than the confidence of saying in the mirror: look where I was and look where I am. Nothing is impossible now. read more
