We live not far from here and after saying we should try it for over a year, my husband and I went sans kiddos for a date night on a Saturday night. We arrived about 6 pm and there was no one else in the dining room. We were handed menus and told to sit anywhere we liked. The server came over pretty quickly to take our drink menus. I ordered American coffee and she was very up front that she would need to brew a new pot so it would be a few mins. No problem at all! A few more tables filled up but I noticed multiple servers so anticipated pretty prompt service overalll. I ordered the Mijesano Meso, my husband ordered the stuffed cabbage rolls and we got the spinach pie to share. Starting with the spinach pie- you could tell it was reheated. The pastry was chewy and just had an awkward overall mouth feel. Mijesano Meso- the meat platter was not anything to write home about. The chicken skewers and grilled chicken breast were seasoned the same so why include both on the platter? While they were cooked properly, there wasn't much to write home about. The sausages were ok. I'm not sure what I expected but aside from a meat flavor, there wasn't much else in substance or seasoning that came through. My husband did enjoy his cabbage rolls and especially enjoyed the sauce. The bread swerved with our meal was light, fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. It really was perfect. I wonder if the server just expected us to be done and come to the counter after we finished eating because she mostly disappeared. We had been finished for a good 15 mins before I had to stand up and flag her down from my table while she was coming out of the kitchen. This place wasn't that busY, about 3 other tables with at least one more server floating around. My coffee was tasty and my husband ordered Turkish coffee and while he has had it before, the server was kind enough to explain again how to drink it. The baklava was good but not great. It was soggy and lacked some of the traditional back lava flavors we love Overall, Our experience at Berix was Meh and I don't know that we'd be back. read more

Went in one day with pregnant wife and kid to order a pickup. Held the door for a lady with a baby. Let her get in line before us. The lady couldnt get her order thru because they look to be busy but really were not that busy. Was still waiting in line. A foreign lady walks in, a man walks in 1 minute later. We were waiting in line. The lady looks to the foreign people that walked in way after us takes their order gets it ready they pay and out the door. While we are still waiting with another family to still place an order. The blonde hair lady juat looks at us and get back to work. That was the last chance I gave them an walked out. Very awesome to have a Bosnian restaurant to frequent. We got the mijesano mesa and sudzukice. The fries are crispy and seasoned like no other place! I just wish they would bake them instead of deep frying. Best with ketchup, even though I usually like mine with mayo. The different types of sausages were nice, I loved the beef patty, and the chicken was our favorite. Im so glad they included mayo and ketchup as it is what made everything even better. I've been here once before but many years ago. I will be back when im in the area again but only getting one order of fries. read more

I wanted to give this place a chance and Berix simply wouldn't let me. We arrived on a Saturday, maybe around 1pm. We were handed some menus by a staff member and told to seat ourselves. We went into the main dining area and there were a number of empty tables and dining room was only about half full. All of the empty tables were dirty and full of dishes. Instead of sitting at a table, we opted to stand and wait for someone to come clean one. We waited for about 10 to 15 minutes, receiving no acknowledgement from staff before we finally left. While we stood awkwardly in the dining area, a pair of other diners went to the counter in an attempt to try and order. They had arrived prior to us and have obviously been waiting awhile. One of the staff members chased them away saying she would "come find them." At least at the time of our departure; they had also not been served. The menu looked great and whatever pastry the clerk was dishing into the display case looked amazing. I'm really disappointed that I didn't have a chance to try it, but I'm not sure willing to give Berix another chance. This place definitely needs to get its staffing issues in order. St Louis is abound with places to eat and I will move on to options who are happy to have my business. read more

I had a great meal here at Berix on a Wednesday evening. I ordered the Doner Plate. It was sliced meat (just like gyro meat but not as heavily spiced), 2 scoops of rice with a tomato beef gravy, and a salad. This meal with a bottle of water was right around $10. It was delicious and huge! You order at the counter when you walk in and they bring the food out to you when its ready. The dining room is large and they have quite a nice selection. The Börek (baked filled pastry) looked amazing. I'm also a fan of Sarma (cabbage rolls) and the Cevapi (little sausages) so I'm going to have to go back to try more of the menu. I'm not sure why a lot of the reviewers are complaining about the service. Do we really care when there's no table service anyway? If someone isn't waiting on you then is it really fair for your expectations to be that high? So what that they are all speaking Bosnian. Delicious food, astonishingly indifferent service. If I were rating Berix on its food, I'd go 4 or 5 stars. We started with a sirnica pastry/pie, filled with cheese stuffing. It was big, buttery, flaky, filled with a mild yet savory cheese. Awesome. The daughter's sarma (cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef and rice) were also top notch, with the sauce that came on and around them worthy of sopping up with our bread. And we did, until it was all gone. The wife's doner kebab was good. Lightly spiced gyro meat on that delicious, warm Bosnian flat bread that they serve. But while there was actually sufficient meat and toppings for a sandwich, the flatbread is pretty dense and not actually flat (it actually pretty tall), so that the meat was somewhat lost in all the bread. And then my sudzukice (home made sausages served with french fries, rice or potatoes) was delicious too. The sausages had a rich spiciness that came from flavor and not heat, which filled the mouth. It too came with the Bosnian flat bread, which helped cut the richness of the sausages. I wanted to find out what their rice or potatoes were like on the side, but was served fries instead (more on that below). So the food was pretty great, and quite inexpensive.... However, the service really detracts if you are a dine in customer that just wants a decent meal. I think the place is fine for take out orders. You simply call and pick it up, or come in and order at the counter and then take it with you. But we were dining in. So the young lady behind the counter told gave us three menus, told us to sit anywhere, and someone would bring us water and take our orders. There was only one other table occupied and it was early, so there wasn't a rush of people. After about ten minutes of sitting there and watching multiple people come in and pick up their to go orders. I figured maybe we had misunderstood. So we went back to the counter, but the lady told us just to sit back down and we'd be taken care of. After another five minutes we were about to leave when an older lady came from behind the counter and took our orders. We just wanted water to drink, which seemed fine, and we placed our orders. When the waters came out, they were bottled waters! - which were quickly placed on our table and then the lady left. Shortly later, the food was delivered to us. And that was pretty much it. No further contact to see if everything was okay, to get more drinks for us (which would have been no, since I wasn't paying for more bottled water!), or to ask if we wanted dessert. So finally I went up to the counter and asked for a couple to go containers for our leftovers and asked about paying. The young lady told us that we just pay at the counter when we are done. So we did, and we left. What a disappointing experience. Food was great. Service, not so much. I'd give the service 1 or 2 stars. Overall I figure it averages to 3 stars. Apparently the bottled water is standard practice, maybe. Quite a few tables filled in after we arrived. And they were all getting table service, not ordering at the counter and having the food brought out to them. I noticed that some others also received bottled water, with at least one person looking perturbed at it. Apparently he had also just expected a glass of water. Surprise! At least tell us this is the case beforehand. But it looked like if you ordered something else to drink, they would bring you a glass of water. Yet, this didn't seem consistent either. I saw one table order three teas and a water for four people, yet that water was just a glass. I said above that I'd have more about the fries later. Well when I was ordering, I forgot to specify my side dish, and the lady didn't ask. So I guess the default is just to give fries, which is disappointing because I really wanted something with the Bosnian flavor/flair. read more

NOTE: This is not an American restaurant. If you're not speaking their language you may think you're receiving bad service. It's not them, it's you. Reset your expectations to what it is like to travel around Eastern Europe and you'll be much happier if you decide to visit this place. If you don't decide to visit them - they don't care. They are Eastern Europeans, their customers are Eastern Europeans and they are busy enough without trying to speak our language or conform to our our expectations of service. On the other hand, if you can deal with the indifferent service and confusing operation of the place then you are in for a true old-world treat. I ordered the Doner Kebab although the Burek looked great too. Still, as soon as I saw the rotating spit of meat I knew that was going to be my lunch. They shaved it really thinly and piled it pretty generously on the Bosnian bread. The meat had a great flavor that was similar to Greek gyros but not as heavily spiced. Very juicy and tender! The sandwich was served cut into quarters and had a pile of onions, tomatoes and lettuce on top of the meat with a tzatzki-esque sauce on top. The bread looked like it would hold up nicely to one trying to pick up the thing and eat it as a sandwich. I didn't want to wear it so I went with a fork instead. I was pretty hungry yet only made it through 3/4 of the meat and 1/4 of the bread. If you order this, eat the whole thing and leave hungry then you should probably see your doctor...there's something very wrong with you. read more

There aren't many cuisines available in this country that I'm unfamiliar with. I'll taste anything once. I've been dying to try authentic Bosnian food in St Louis and finally got around to it. Overall, Berix would have been a better dining experience if 1) I knew something (anything!) about Bosnian cuisine, and 2) I or someone I was with spoke Bosnian. As others have noted, the menu is not particularly instructive for those unfamiliar with Bosnian food. It felt like Berix is largely geared towards satisfying the Bosnian community. The staff speaks English just fine, but they seemed unconcerned with helping those who are new to their establishment. After spending close to 10 minutes squinting at the small menu posted behind the counter, we finally asked for an actual menu. It was still difficult to discern what we wanted, but overall I think we did OK. As an aside, it was slightly disconcerting to order at the counter, then sit down at a very nice table and be served by a waitress. The decor is very warm, however, and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I ordered the pick two combo and got bean soup and cevapi. My dining companion ordered a serving of meat pie. The soup was thick and smoky. The cevapi came as a large sandwich with multiple small beef sausages. The bread was my favorite part. Very light. The meat pie was exactly that; meat in pie form. It tasted heavily of phyllo dough, although that is not necessarily a complaint. The portion sizes were incredibly generous for the price. Six years ago, I lived in Montenegro for a year and came to really like the Bosnian/Serbian/Croatian cuisine. I had to come to St Louis to finally be able to eat the "real thing" again! My boyfriend and I shared a Zeljanica (burek or pie with spinach cheese stuffing) which was delicious: soft, a little greasy but not too much, perfectly seasoned. Definitely the highlight of the whole dinner. I had hoped to get the Krompirusa (burek with potato stuffing), but you have to come earlier in the day for that... I had Sarma (cabbage rolls stuffed with ground beef and rice plus mashed potatoes on the side). The rolls were small but tasty and the smaller size balanced filling and cabbage (the big ones just have to much meat for me). I didn't care much for the creamy sauce they came with. I used to eat them with more of a gravy and am not a fan of cream sauces in general. My boyfriend ordered the mixed meat platter which came with a sausage, a piece of chicken, a chicken skewer, plejskavica (Bosnian burger) and three cevapi (ground beef sausages). French fries on the side. He liked the chicken skewer the best. The cevapi were delicious as well, well seasoned and grilled. I was happy to find Ajvar on the side which I used to eat with everything (spaghetti sauce or meat or sandwich, it goes well with almost everything), Ajvar is a red pepper paste and I found a jar in the Bosnian market right next to the restaurant to take home. I saved room for baklava and it was good. Sweet and soft. But I have had better. Our waitress spoke English and could explain everything (the menu is Bosnian only, the website explains the menu in English, however, so you can preplan what you want to order). Everybody but us was Bosnian, it seemed, which added to my nostalgic experience. The restaurant itself was pretty simple: counter, a few booths, some tables and chairs, nothing special. There is outdoor seating, but the restaurant is close to a main street so don't expect a quiet dinner. Overall: the food was great, the restaurant ok. Would definitely recommend it! read more

I have to drop one star from this place due to the insanely salty doner. My cousin & I came here for lunch yesterday. And I was slightly disappointed. We ordered the ground beef burek & a doner salad. The dressing was delish, but the doner (sliced meat) was incredibly salty. After eating several pieces of the doner, I was finished. It was like tasting the ocean. I don't understand why it needed that much salt. Lunch rush wasn't terribly bad. If you find yourself coming here at the lunch rush hour, just order at the cashier & find a place to sit down. They will bring it out to you. Otherwise, you'll have to wait. I don't believe the name is derived from the street name, since this is the second location of Berix in town... Anyway, I stopped in for lunch the other day and had the doner kebab. Please note this has nothing to do with the more familiar shish kebab we all know. It's a sandwich, plain and simple. I have never had this dish in the US, only in Germany. Over there it's callled doner kebap and there are lots of places that specialize in it. It was always cut from a skewer and it had the look of stacked pork steaks. The taste was much stronger there (not a surprise). Heavier on the garlic, I think. The version here is pretty much a gyro on bread. It was very good bread - billowy and soft, and the ingredients were all quite tasty. It was big - probably enough for two to split due to the big roll. The best part might have been the price at $4.79. It's cheaper than a subway footlong!!!! Plus about 15 times more tasty. As noted in the other review, this place is probably the nicest fast food joint in town. Beautiful stonework on the fireplace (yes fireplace). Counter service was a little laid back, but okay I guess. Not sure what would happen if I came when they were busy... Language barrier? Well the first thing she said to me was...well I'm not sure, but it wasn't English. I gave her my typical dumb look. After that, we got along fine. Some of the other dishes looked pretty tasty. Breakfast is served, although it starts at 9, which is kind of late, really. I guess Bosnians like to sleep in more than my 4-yr-old daughter. Cheap, tasty Eastern European dishes done right! We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon. The place was very clean and looked more like a bakery than a restaurant. There is a wrap-around porch with tables. Cute! (Too bad the storm was passing so we couldn't eat outside). The menu is huge and everything was pretty cheap, especially considering how big the portions were as we found out later. I had trouble picking just one item that I wanted more than others. We split an order of pancakes filled with potatoes. Excellent! The donner kebob came on sour-dough that was deliciously soft. My cabbage rolls with ground beef (not bread, just beef rolled into cabbage leaves) was a messy plate topped with orange cream sauce. Not sure how healthy this was but all the flavors blended wonderfully and the meat was well seasoned. Service was slow but mostly because quite a few customers came in ordering cakes and frozen yogurts, etc. They had multiple types of baked goods on display/sale. Berix on Lemay is probably one of the top restaurants in St. Louis. Its a gem that is not well known and their food does take a while to come out, because they cook it 5/5. Very simple restaurant with a delicious bakery near the check out counter, I tried all but two desserts and they're prepared perfect. Oh and the prices are all around ~10$. read more

The food here is phenomenal. The Donar Kebeb was as close to what I used to get in Germany as I have found. The decor is very nice and the outside patio is a good addition. I subtracted a star because of the service. It's slow. They weren't rude, they just took a while to serve us. Consider it real European dining where it's intended to be a social experience. Come with a group that you like to hang out with and socialize. Oh, and water was served in a red solo cup, that was weird. read more

Every time I come here I am blown away by the food, the portion sizes, and how awesome and friendly the staff is. The menu has a huge selection with a lot of variety from plate sized sandwiches (Doner), to lunch combos (soup / sandwich or wraps with fries), to full on dinner plates (the stuffed chicken is absolutely amazing). There is something there for a variety of tastes and every budget. This place serves a lot of great Bosnian food (Cevapi) and clearly has some American influences but is largely traditional. The staff (and most of the regulars) speak Bosnian most of the time which to me is an indication that the food is fairly authentic - and it is unarguably delicious. You can order at the counter or simply sit for table service. The first few times we went in, we ordered at the counter then sat but were later encouraged to just be seated. My one complaint is that the table service can be slow and a little inattentive, especially during the lunch rush so If you need a server to be regularly checking on you to make sure your drink is full you may find this frustrating. The TVs often have international sporting events and the staff is happy to chat about anything from the whether, to politics, to world/local sports and it's wonderful to hear the perspective of those who haven't been here since birth. To do so while savoring their culinary contributions is all the more divine. If you like eastern European cuisine and haven't been to this place, get there right now and try them out. I recommend the Donner sandwich and an Orangina but anything you get is going to be delicious. read more

I every time I have wanted to go there they are not open. Decided to try it one afternoon for lunch and to my surprise I was very impressed and left so full that I could hardly drive home. I had the Doner salad plate. There were two scoops of rice that were so good that my mouth waters just thinking about them. The amount of Gyro meat was huge and was awesome. I went back the next Saturday and was disappointed that they had run out of some menu items. I am glad the are busy enough to run out of things. It was almost closing time as well. I had doner salad just without rice. Delicious! My honey had cabbage rolls and said the were the best he'd ever had. Will be back again. The food is always made to order. The preperation looks good, smells great, and the taste is wonderful. I'm a big fan of the cevapti(sp)and the desserts. This place misses a five star rating because of the service. Good things due come to those who wait and wait and wait. It takes the kitchen quite a while to turn out these great meals. If you arrive at the end of lunch, don't wear your watch. The building looks like a ski lodge and the parking lot is ample. Great place with reasonable prices. read more

Oh my god, the doner kebab here is amazing. My sister dragged me and a friend here, raving about the sandwiches. When she told us to order the doner kebab, I was really disappointed, though. A thousand memories of doner kebabs from sidewalk food stands flooded back. We came all the way here for THAT? Was I ever wrong, though! The bread is fluffy and amazing. The filling is heavenly. And the sandwiches are HUGE. Like as big as your head. You might want to share with a friend. Sometimes we've come and somebody has dared to order something other than the doner kebab. It is always delicious too. And the prices are so low! Now everybody in my family is addicted, and the addiction is slowly spiraling outwards to friends and acquaintances. read more

Been here once and can't wait to go back. Went for the doner kebab and will return for the doner kebab. Arrived on Sunday for lunch with my family and selected a booth. When I saw the roasting meat on spits I knew I was in the right place. Waiter came with menus and we all selected the doner kebab. Noticed other patrons arriving and being served as they were regulars which is cool with me. Our doners arrived quickly and were excellent. The portion sizes are quite large and the ambiance reminds me of a European restaurant. Had the Cupavci for dessert and was very happy. Please understand this is not an American restaurant. Several other languages (Eastern European) are being spoken and you need to have an open mind and be tolerant of other cultures when dining here. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. The reason for 4 stars is their customer service. To me it seems like they have an attitude and I feel uncomfortable. Otherwise their food is great. I eat here and order from them often. My favorite is the Doner Kebab, the bread is perfect, and the dressing is amazingly delicious. I also love to order their meat and potato pies. If you never had Bosnian food you must try the dishes here. Bosnian food has a balance of western and European influence. So you won't find anything weird here. Their entree's are absolutely delicious. I've had 5 of their entrees and loved each one of them. If you drink coffee, you must try their version of Turkish coffee. Amazing. I noticed many people complain about service. This is not FastFood!!! We live in a society that is characterized by imparting quickness (and I don't have time...) and fast motion style that most tend to blame anything that hampers this pace as being negative. I lovelovelove their food.The sernica and burek are fantastic, as well as the rest of their pies. What keeps me coming back there though is their doner-kebab.
