I ended up going to this establishment with a dining group of men period. We had about 20 people in our group who each had separate checks, which they kept very well organized.The food was very delicious and had a wide selection.It was white tablecloths and the servers were very professional and courteous inefficient period. This place was a lovely jewel box of a restaurant! We tried the currant compote, the borsch, the olivié salad, the bliny with meat, and the cherry dumplings-- everything was delicious. The owner and her family were unbelievably friendly and warm, and it was a sincere pleasure to dine there. The music was not playing that night, which they seemed apologetic about, but which was actually perfect for us, as we were in town just for a whirlwind trip and were overstimulated as it was. Good Russian and Soviet mileu cuisine. Everything is prepared correctly and served appropriately. I recommend coming on nights with a DJ. Order a bottle of vodka with dinner, sip with seltzer back, then after the restaurant and kitchen shut, the music begins, the dance floor opens, switch to shots of your vodka of choice and prepare for Eastern eurodisco and a raucous good time. It's not often that you walk into an empty restaurant and disturb the owner watching her Russian talk show at the bar. How lucky we were! That should have been the sign to turn around and leave. However, not us! We were on a mission to try something different and that we did. Microwaved soups, fatty cuts of meat, and cold salsa (??? for Russian food) as our sauce. Yum! Who wouldn't want all of that? And to top it off, never a soul entered during our entire meal so the restaurant remained empty. Can't believe everyone is staying away from this gem. Do yourself a favor: if you are nearby, go to any of the other restaurants in the strip mall. I guarantee they will be better. read more

It's kind of a fancy-looking place, and the food and service are very good. I did not know what to expect, but my brother had been there before and I joined him this time. We ordered dumplings and a salad to start. Simple and very good. Later I had a tasty Ukranian beer and the chicken Kiev, which is lightly stuffed and breaded and came with some fantastic au gratin potatoes. Stuffed cabbage was also very good. I ate at this restaurant for a coworkers 10 year anniversary party. We were served family style with some of the food options being off menu. The table setting was really nice and our group rented out the entire restaurant. We started with a slew of appetizers and booze. So many appetizers I can't remember the names of any of them, however I can say I thoroughly enjoyed everything I tried. I really enjoyed the salads, pickled veggies, stuffed fish and the smoked fish appetizers. We enjoyed Russian Standard Vodka as well as one of the most delectable Georgian red wines I've ever tasted. After we'd gorged ourselves on appetizers the main entrees were served. We were all a little surprised and wishing we hadn't devoured the apps, because the lamb rice was outstanding! I am not going to rate this place any lower, the reason being it may just may be my palate that is not as refined as I would like it to be to enjoy Russian cuisine. As I can never recall having Russian cuisine other than when I ate here. Most of the other reviews seem to like this place, so until I had a chance to give it one more try this is my review. We had a variety of dishes and the smoked fish platter was good, the other foods were all to pickled, or sour for my liking. I enjoy sweet meats mostly or either a spicy...exploding dish full of flavor and buttery, or creamy and milky. To me it seems as though everything had pickles or sour dill flavors to it and sometimes so much dill that is was way to overpowering for my taste buds. A lot of dill is used in their dishes. I am sure I can find something in the Russian cuisines that I would love, I will just have to try more Russian dishes to find it. If everything is dill heavy, I will not love Russian food probably ever...so I am not going to knock this place as the server was great and the food looked very appealing. I will tell you the one part of the meal I thought was great but a bit pricey...the Russian Vodka, man that stuff was great. It is just as I named it, Russian Vodka, I have no idea what kind, but I really enjoyed that. Maybe you are supposed to have a few of the Russian vodkas and the food will be great? Nothing bad can be said about this place by me, as I never give a restaurant a bad kick, because I have an undeveloped pallet, so by the next time I eat Russian cuisine again, hopefully my taste buds are more adapt at enjoying this cuisine. read more

Finally, I got the family to eat here with me for a special occasion. Fortunately, ever enjoyed it and I loved it. My grandmother, who was Lithuanian, used to make beat soup and meat dumplings for me when I was growing up. The Russian/Ukrainian versions are slightly different, but the this one of only a couple places in the St. Louis area where I can get anything close. The borscht (beat soup) and Pelmini (meat dumplings) were excellent. My sons both really liked the pelmini. They're juicy and flavorful and perfect with sour cream. The borscht was chock full of beat and potato and athe ingredients were tender. Everyone also liked the meat blinsis. They're a bit like a mini burrito in appearance. The meat is different than in the dumplings in that it is minced- more like the consistency of ravioli filling. We were less impressed with the smoked fish and caviar. But tue octopus salad that came with the smoked fish was delicious. As far as entrées, we were all blown away by the lamb and chicken kebabs. Maybe the best kebabs I've had. Finally, we shared vareniki for dessert. They're another dumpling. This time filled with cheese and cherry filling. Exceeded expectations. I'll definitely be back. read more

3.5/5 Asotria Russian Bistro is an authentic Russian restaurant located in Creve Coeur. Although I have never been to Russia, I could tell by the Russian accents and language of the staff, and the Russian TV show that was on at the bar that this place is truly a Russian restaurant. I came here last night with my sister courtesy of a Groupon deal. The dining room had about three other tables of diners there besides us while we were there. Our waitress quickly greeted us and flled our water glasses and took and fulfilled our drink orders. However, she then didn't come back to our table for about another 15-20 minutes to take our food order because she was running around the restaurant catering to the other guests. She was the only server working the entire restaurant on a Saturday night. She was very friendly and accomodating. The restaurant itself has a nice, upscale atmosphere. The tables have white linen table cloths and white linen napkins, and nice jazz music played in the background. There's a full bar here and they even have a stage in the corner of the dining room. For dinner, I ordered the Spring salad (basically cucumber salad) and lamb shishkebob with potatoes. It was all very good. My sister ordered the chicken shishkebab. When it arrived, our waitress told her that the chicken is cooked with a marinade and if she doesn't like it, to let her know. Sure enough, after the first bite, my sister hated it. I didn't find anything wrong with it when she let me try it. It had a unique flavor, but it wasn't bad in my opinion. We'll say my sister has a "sensitve pallate", also known as "picky". We flagged the waitress back and she offered to make her a different dish. My sister went with the Chicken Kiev. About 20-25 minutes later, she finally got the Kiev. At this point, I was finishing my dish. My sister liked the Kiev but then had to rush to eat. Our waitress suggested dessert and brought out a dessert tray with a variety of desserts. Keep in mind, none of the desserts that were brought out on display were listed on the dessert section of the menu. We selected the Black Forest cake. It was good, however the cherry on top was stuck in this mound of whip cream that seemed to have settled. It wasn't hard but it wasn't at all light and fluffy as it should have been. When the bill came, we saw that we had been charged $9 for the slice of Black Forest cake. Now, I accept that this cake was good, but it wasn't THAT good. The prices here aren't too bad, in that our dishes were each $16, which is the average price of the entrees on the menu. I would recommend coming here if you'd like to try a different type of cuisine than typical American fare but I can't see too many people who aren't of this heritage making this place their regular dining locale. read more

How on earth this place got a five star review is beyond me! I used a groupon here and I was ready to walk out as soon as I sat down and just consider my groupon a donation. Here is our night here: We are greeted very politely and we are sat within a minute of arriving inside (fantastic!) We are then given two small glasses of water...make that tiny. We look at the entree list there are only 6 maybe 7 items to choose from.... Kids do not have a menu much less anything to color with...sad We wait 25 minutes and watch the one server going around to the 17 full tables... We ask the waiter to come over his name is "Sergey (something like that)" he just says he is busy and can't help us. We then wait another bit of time, in about 32 minutes we finally get the busy Sergey to take our order...great now we have to wait for our food! We then wait another 25 minutes for our food, I didn't even get what I ordered! Our water glasses were never refilled so we just got to eat without anything to drink. I think the portion sizes were cut down for grouponers...it was tiny and for $16 for a normal price that is ridiculous! Some girl waitress comes and scans our groupon...i sit around another 10 minutes waiting for my check so i can pay the taxes...she never comes... I put a whopping $3 on the table hoping to cover taxes with no tip...i ALWAYS tip, i just couldn't bring myself to do this! DO NOT BUY A GROUPON HERE!!!! The Astoria is one of the first Russian restaurants that I have ever been too. I have eaten eastern European food before but never Russian. I was not sure what to expect, maybe lots of cabbage and vodka. Well what I got was much more. At the Astoria I was pleasantly surprised by vast amount of food that they had. I really enjoyed their stuffed grape leaves and the borscht soup was amazing. The little bit of sour cream brought the flavor even more of the soup. Along with my meal I got to try a new beer, which I am always open to very much. It was Baltika number 9, which was nice and strong. Baltika beer rangers numerically in which the higher the number, the higher the alcohol content of it. The beer went down smooth and had a wonderful aftertaste that brought out the flavor of the food. The Astoria is a nice little Russian restaurant that I enjoy very much. read more

Came to STL with my boyfriend last week and found a groupon for this place and had to go- bf is from Russia and always craves traditional food but we lack a place for it back home. Groupon was for 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine at 50%off, and we ordered the chicken tabaka and golubtsi (cabbage rolls) for that, but bf added a lot of other stuff to our meal as well. Herring (tasty but overpriced for the portion size), Borscht (tasted like it was missing something) and solyanka (BF devoured but I did not like as much). Had the potato salad with our entrees, and that was probably my favorite thing. Bf chowed down on the chicken entree, but I was not impressed. I really liked the cabbage rolls though, and after the rest of our meal found that one was filling enough. The wine we were offered was not Russia, but because it was included with the groupon, we didn't care much. We had the vareniki for dessert, which was sweet and buttery (and I'm not into sweets)- I found the dish interesting but it isn't something I'll order again. In closing, this place is worth a visit if you like Russian food or have an adventurous side and would like to try it, the Russian potato salad was stellar and the cabbage rolls are a tasty choice, but the meal becomes a bit pricey without much justification. If you plan on going, definitely check for a groupon first- though they were kind of rude about us using it in the first place, even though we were their only lunch time table. read more

Before I start this review, I just want to state that I'm no stranger to artery-clogging food. I can get down with a greasy porkchop (or let's be real, a piece of fried chicken) with the best of 'em. Deep fried twinkie? Bring it on. A double-down from KFC? (for you suckers who don't know, it's a 'sandwich' with cheese and bacon, except instead of bread, they use fried chicken. I KNOWWWW.) An ice cream sundae the size of my head? Come on, that's the best you've got? What I'm trying to say is, I love fatty food. The greasier the better. Butter? Bring it on. I'll bring Paula Deen to tears. I mean...have you SEEN me lately? Moo. So sorry so fat. Anyway, I went to Astoria a few weeks ago with some friends. We arrived on a Friday night, and aside from one other group of 4, the place was pretty empty. I had pored over the menu the day before, so I already knew what I was going to order: The Golubtzy. Cabbage stuffed with ground beef? Count me in. My food arrived pretty quickly, and came with a side of potatoes. It looked and smelled amazing. I quickly dug in, ignoring the orange sheen that seemed to coat everything on my plate. "Must be spicy Russian seasonings!" I told myself as I shoveled the food into my mouth. Oh, what do you mean Russian food isn't typically spicy? I'm willfully ignorant. I have a Chemistry degree; I'm not a history aficionado. Anyway, after a few bites, I noticed that my food wasn't spicy. Nor did it have much flavor otherwise. So what WAS that orange glaze that coated everything? And why was it slowly solidifying? I looked on my friend's plate of stroganoff. Hers had the same orange glow. And so did my other friend's plate. I looked at them. They looked at me. I looked at them. I dropped my fork. "This," I deadpanned, "...is fat." And it wasn't the good kind of fat, my friends. You know...the kind that gives duck it's amazing flavor, or the stuff that's marbled into expensive steak, or even the stuff that drips down your chin when you take a bite of fried chicken and reminds you that you are, in fact, in AMURRRICAH?! THAT'S tasty fat. No, this was flavorless, greasy fatty fat that reminds you of your mortality. Reminds you that one day, your heart WILL stop beating and you will DIE. Needless to say, I ended my meal right then. We all did. We didn't have the heart to tell our amazingly gorgeous, Russian-accented server (god, I'm so shallow) that our food sucked. Instead, we silently paid, took our to-go boxes, and left. No wonder the place was so dead on a Friday night. Never again. read more

Eating here was emotional for me because I spent my early childhood in Russia and grew up around Russian cooking, so I went with some trepidation after reading the (mostly good) reviews. The first thing I have to point out is that calling ahead is important - for instance, by calling today we found out two things: Firstly, the restaurant was only open until 10pm this Saturday night, rather than 1am as stated on the website - probably because of Easter; and secondly, one of the two printable coupons on their website is no longer valid. The $5 off one is, but not the "buy one get one half price'. Another group who were dining when we came in, obviously did not call ahead, because they tried to use said coupon...and were told it was not valid by the extremely stern Russian bosslady. She kept muttering something about an expiration date, even though there really isn't one on the coupon. Even though this didn't happen to us, I'm still docking them a star for this unfair play. Now that I have the one negative out of the way, let me tell you how delicious the food was. If you're not familiar with Russian cuisine, there's really not much to it: mostly meat, potatoes, and some weird fish, with lots of dill and sour cream. I had the "Olivie" salad (sometimes known as the Russian Salad in countries such as Spain). This is basically potatoes, peas, and beef in a mayo dressing. Their particular version had barely any beef at all, which I suspect is a sneaky attempt to cut corners, but it did have lots of dill to make up for that (or not). Dill jokes aside, I was quite happy that the salad was light on the beef because I was having a beef main anyway. I had the Golubtsy as a main after reading another review that said they melted in the mouth - and because I like them in general. Golubtsy are cabbage leaves stuffed with meat and rice in a tomato sauce, and boy did these melt in my mouth...as promised! They were beyond delicious. My only complaint was that the portion included only two cabbage rolls and the rest of the plate was filled with potatoes, but really, two is a normal healthy portion and I'm just being greedy. The potatoes, by the way, are heavenly - very simple halved and thinly sliced fried potatoes, which is the Russian version of French fries. This dish is also served with sour cream (a standard accompaniment to many Russian dishes). My boyfriend had the caviar blini to start, which he said were OK but not outstanding. For the main he had the hen, which he rated very highly. One thing I found a bit odd about the menu was the price structure: my appetizer cost the same as my main. They could definitely take those appetizer prices down a notch or two - the entrees are very reasonably priced. As for the atmosphere and decor, it's a nicer place than you might expect from the drab-looking exterior that you see you on the photo. The furniture and bar decking is made of smart dark wood, and Russian TV plays in the background (I asked for a table right by the TV so I could watch, but it's not loud enough to be obnoxious if you don't speak Russian). We were served by a nice, mild-mannered Russian guy, with the bosslady sniping at him from the sidelines once in a while. I can imagine she can be quite rude to customers if she's in a bad mood, but that's just the Russian way. I am always amazed when non-Russians try out Russian cuisine, because it's really a cuisine built from hunger and necessity. But this restaurant proves that it can also be delicious. If you've never eaten Russian food before, this restaurant is a good place to start. read more
