Adopted a dog, labeled as child friendly and dog friendly. 24 hours later.... adopted dog attacked our puppy, he had to be euthanized. While our 2 year old puppy had to have a leg amputated. My wife and I both were attacked as well. Was told they do not asses their animals only go by what previous owner told them. This can not happen again they need to be shut down. I was disappointed by the way the customer service treated us, we went there trying to see dogs to get an idea and apparently they were closing but the website said it was open, when we got there the atmosphere felt tense by everyone looking at us making me feel uncomfortable, so if customer service treat people like that why should I worry getting t a pet from there?... read more

I adopted two kittens from Berkeley County January of 2021. Shortly after, I took them both back to be spayed and neutered. After surgery, they were SO disoriented and drugged (which I thought was normal seeing as they just had surgery), but two days later I noticed my boy kitten was breathing very fast and heavy. I immediately called Berkeley County simply questioning if this was normal, and immediately I was told that it definitely was not their fault (which I never alluded to) and that I should take my kitten to the emergency vet. Later that evening I had to get my kitten put down. Months later I adopt another kitten (not from Berkeley County) and just took him to Promise Animal League in Boonsboro, Maryland. Surgery went amazing and he came out of surgery as if nothing had happened. Not disoriented in the slightest. I'm very disappointed with how Berkeley County immediately deflected blame when they were told there was an issue after surgery, and also with the state my kittens were in coming out of surgery. Do not get your animals spayed and neutered here. read more

Got my baby from here, love her to death, she's been the best cat for 5 years so far, nothing bad to say, the adoption process took all of 10-15mins and I could take her home 10/10 read more

They kill perfectly healthy animals!!!!!!! We found kittens on our street. We kept them and feed them till they were 6 weeks old and eating mostly on their own. We took them here to get adopted out as we can not afford to keep strays. We were told they would just kill them because they can't adopt out anything under 8 weeks old! It's ridiculous!! read more

We adopted our wonderful cat here. The girl that helped us was very attentive and honest about each cats dimenier. My son wanted another cat and she was honest with me about the kitty instead of not being truthful and pushing me out the door with a cat not right for our home. I really enjoyed that she took the time to help us find the perfect family pet. The only negative thing I can think happened was when I walked in and said I would like to adopt a cat and I had my three year old on my hip, the woman at the counter pointed me to to cat room (beautiful, clean area full of kitties) but nobody came to help and I did not know what to do. There were some cats in cages and others running around and there was another door to a play area. I did not know if we could touch the cats or go in the play area so I stood there with a toddler trying to get someone to come help. When the girl finally did come help she was wonderful and we could not have been more happy. read more

Two years ago, I adopted Gus, a loving, gentle Border Collie from here. I received great help through the adoption process and took my new baby home. He is healthy and happy. This is a no kill shelter, despite what a previous review said. The runs are clean and animals healthy. The caregivers work hard to raise funds to benefit the animals and lavish attention on them. It was my first shelter adoption but will not be my last. read more

I have adopted two dogs from here over the years and they have been wonderful. However, the shelter's funds are limited and they are not a "No Kill" shelter. That being said, people need to be realistic, this shelter gets animals dropped off here that have been found in trashcans (our last dog came from a litter found with their mother in a dumpster), abandoned on back roads, etc. Also, most vets will tell you that it is best to not give an animal "their shots" until they are a little older and to hold off on their spaying/neutering even more (for proper bone development, etc.), but the shelter is required to do some of those things before the animal is adopted, so there is some buyer beware regarding adopting such animals. But have some common sense and accept that getting a pet from such shelters is still better than supporting the far too many puppy mills that exist. read more

Many family and friends have adopted cats through Berkeley county animal shelter. All of our cats have had long lives. Very happy with them.

We adopted a kitten just 1 week ago, and today he has died. The excuse we got is that they "do not guarantee the health of their cats." There were several in quarantine ( in the same room) with towels over their cages. We were assured that the cats/kittens without the towels were not sick. The first day we brought our kitten home, he seemed fine. The second day he slept a lot. The third day he was sneezing and congested. By the 5th day he was lethargic and not eating. We spent several hundred dollars at the vet yesterday, only to watch him die this morning. The vet told us he had a very bad Upper Respiratory infection and worms. The Humane Society insisted he had his shots and was not sick. I now have 3 children to console. I will NEVER AGAIN adopt an animal from the Humane Society ! read more

I would not recommend adopting from this facility. I adopted a kitten on July 11, 2019. Three days later she was showing signs of not feeling well. I took her to my personal vet immediately. She had a temperature of 104.1, both eyes infected, sinus infection and both ears bacterial infection from ear mites. The vet and his tech worked on her for an hour to get her stable. The vet also told me that she was too young for the staff of BCHS to have given her a dewormer vaccine. I have since talked to others that have adpoted from this facility and they have thier own tragic stories to tell, puppies adopted with parvo and dying soon after adoption. I contacted the BCHS to voice my concerns but no answer when I call. I left a voicemail and they have not returned my call. I am concerned that these adoption animals are not being properly vetted before becoming available for adoption. My advice to you is, do not adopt from this facility. read more

I am Looking for a small dog as a therapy friend. I am a Veteran who was never able to have children. I have depression and really need a companion.I can afford shot and what not but don't have the money to pay for the dog. I can get a letter from my VA doctor stating that this will help with the depression. I live in an apartment but there is plenty of room out back to run and play. I hope there are some heart warming people out there that would be willing to help. read more

DO NOT ADOPT FROM HERE! They don't have a veterinarian on site. They'll adopt out any animal without concern for it's current health just so long as you give them a non-refundable $65. Our kitten died this morning while my two daughters were holding him. He suffered for a week with an Upper Respiratory Infection and worms. There's several other complaints on google reviews for this shelter for the exact same reason. read more

I adopted a beautiful kitten from here, she died within 12 hours. I am very upset about the whole situation, they told me when I called to notify them about her death that distemper was running through the kennel. I think they should pay closer attention to the health of their animals, rather than just trying to get rid of them and collect the 65 dollars. I understand that they operate on donations and might struggle financially, maybe they shouldn't take so many animals in if they can't afford to give them proper care. read more
