The Reuben here is travel worthy here. I got it to go with some potato salad, and it makes me close my eyes and think of my Grandma. The perfect combination of kraut, corned beef and sauce on buttered rye and fried. This is like home cooking or a diner. Nothing weird or quirky, just good flavor and quality. They have a small salad bar for dining in, and it makes a nice lunch. I have had the fried chicken here as well and was pleased. I travel a lot for work and I always look forward to visiting here. On a recent trip to tour the Limberlost museum, my fiancé and I decided to stop here and have lunch. My blood sugar had gotten low and I really needed something hearty. Thankfully, the Berne Dining Family Restaurant was open (it was Sunday). I had a very good grilled bacon and cheese samdwich and a small side of biscuits and gravy (not bad). My fiancé had a Monte Cristo sandwich, which he deemed more like a hot ham and cheese, meaning the sandwich was not deep fried like a standard Monte Cristo. Home of the smallest coffee cup in the state of Indiana! The older waitress is not friendly at all! Whatever grease they use for grilling has a distinct off putting taste! Great lunch! Grilled Salmon, salad, 2 sides & 2 slices of great pie for under$17! Service very timely and friendly. Restaurant clean & parking lot easy to navigate! Food was not at all up to what you would think. Cute & clean little restaurant. No home cooking. They order their pies. I tried the meatloaf Manhattan to give the place a 2nd chance. I thought it would be real mashed potatoes but, nope. Yesterday, I tried some bacon, alfredo spaghetti. It was horrible. I would say breakfast would have to be better. The people their are so nice. We came here for breakfast on July 4th when there weren't too many restaurants open. It was the first time for us. We were seated and given menus. After looking over the menu we ordered pancakes with eggs and bacon. Eggs were just ok, pancakes were not great but not terrible. They had a strange texture, almost chewy. The bacon was the star on this day. It had good flavor and was crispy. Wait staff was acceptable but nothing over and beyond. I was photographing a cross country meet at Jay County High School, and I remembered that this restaurant wasn't far. It looked busy, so I figured it must be good. Sadly, Jinny's down the road in Bryant didn't make me want to return, even though it was recommended. As I found the front door, there was a large board full of specials. I'm not sure anyone could remember them since there were probably 20 of them. As I entered, a man picked up a couple of menus and asked me how many. I said one and held up a finger since he seemed to have two menus in his hand. He put down one of the menus and started telling me how it's better to go to a restaurant with someone else and proceeded to give me dating advice. :-D Perhaps, it was that I was still a bit wet from being out in the rain for 2+ hours but he sat me as far back as the building went. Maybe, that's where they put the outsiders when they can't put them outside. As I started with the menu, a waitress came to the table and asked if she could start me with a drink. As I fumbled for the drinks, she mentioned Pepsi products and I asked for a Diet Mountain Dew (no sugar for me right now). It wasn't very long and she returned. Many people were being seated at the time. I couldn't really decide because there were so many menu selections but chose a Corned Beef on Rye Sandwich. I asked for Swiss Cheese and Brown Mustard. "Sorry, but we don't have brown mustard. We've got regular mustard or Thousand Island Dressing." I wasn't in the Northeast, but Northeastern Indiana. Oops. I told her to please bring yellow mustard. At least, the sandwich came on rye bread. She named off a long list of side items, of which the sandwich came with one. I ordered potato salad, thinking that the Swiss influence of the town might provide something interesting, and I had not had potato salad since my mum died. Hers, and her mother's, was amazing, even though I don't care for anything with mayonnaise. It didn't take too long until she brought the food to my table. I tried the potato salad--it was the most bland I'd had anywhere. It seemed to be potatoes (Yes, VP Quayle from Indiana, that is the spelling.), mayonnaise, and shredded carrots without a spice of any kind. The corned beef sandwich was much better with good meat (not from a can, I believe) and a thin slice of cheese. The bread was also good. The waitress checked on me once after that. After finishing, I went to the cash register to pay, and to get change for a tip. I once again got dating advice. Since it was slightly more than 24 hours into my day, I think I walked away as he was talking, to deliver the tip to the table, and I then exited. I think if I return, I'd make different selections, or at least, take some brown mustard with me--and take someone else with me, maybe a huge group of people. :-D read more

Wife, kid and I went 4 a meal. Had an" All You Can Eat Chicken/Fish Night" This place once was named Parkway and was a happening place. Breakfasts were served all day, seats were hard to find & if you were from Berne and weren't here you were either sick or out of town. Progress has brought in a new Owner, a BIG up grade on the interior and higher prices. The fish were paperthin pieces of fish w/a lot of batter. The Chicken was below average, sent breasts back because they were raw. Needed some serious TLC in the batter. Not as good as KFC. waitress/Cook had an arguement & yelled @ each other, always nice. French Fries were average, I prayed they weren't the ones I saw@ Wal-Mart clearance rack. Rumor on Street is that place is going back to the Old Way,Home StyleCooked Meals like Grandma would be proud to make, if it does I'll be back...if not the doors will be closed. read more

It was ok but not good, I was torn between ordering a meal or eat their very small buffet the waitress recommended the Buffett - it was gross - the ranch was the runniest ranch I have ever had - no flavor at all it was like pouring milk on my salad. We had to wait for fish, it was good - the only good thing actually. The mashed potatoes was so thick u couldn't even mix them hardly The Mac and cheese was dried out, now realize they were busy so there was no call for this bad of food. I regretted the buffet very much - they did have good baklava and good chicken noodle soup - I'm guessing two things they don't make !!!! read more

The truth of the matter is, there are just few dining options available in Berne, IN. Your satisfaction will largely depend on your expectations. Some members of our party - those that live in small towns that lack many dining options - were very pleased with this restaurant. The rest of us were less than thrilled, but it was serviceable. I had assumed the gravy would be homemade at breakfast, because isn't that just what you do in a small diner in the Midwest? Unfortunately it was a mix just like you would find at Cracker Barrel. My hashbrowns were cold, while everything else was pipping hot. The biscuits were an embarrassment. I will say that the Country Fried Steak was tender and pretty good. We dined here 3 times while in Berne for a family gathering, so I feel qualified to make a fair assessment. At the end of the day, it seems like they don't have a lot of competition, and probably get repeat and new business just for this fact. You have to try the Berne Dinner at least once. The breakfast food and service are pretty good. I love the sausage gravy and biscuts. The corn beef hash needs some help. The lunches are pretty good. The salad bar is pretty good. The soups..which cost extra...are good depending on the day. Their sandwiches are pretty good. The wait staff is mostly friendly. Berne doesn't have a whole lot of options but this is a good one. The menu is pretty big and varied. Sandwiches and Italian entrees, plus more home cooking type entrees. They have buffets some nights and a salad bar. Bonus points for breakfast all day. I got a grilled cheese, which was quite good, and coleslaw. Wish fries had been an option! They used to have a stir fry on the menu that was really good but it's not anymore. Cheap, quick and friendly service. We'll be back when in Berne! read more

Great breakfasts, lunch and dinners. They have a small salad bar but the salads are always fresh. Biscuits and gravy for breakfast is always good and their burgers are always good also. Dinners are great also with a nice selection. Anything from Fried Chicken to Salisbury Steak & Fish and Ham are on the menu. Their fish is always great. We don't live in Berne but family members do and we always go to Berne Dining whenever we are in town. The food is consistantly good and the servers are very friendly. Breakfasts are great as are the dinners. Sometimes we get the buffet but I tend to go back and retry my favorites, of which there are many! It's fun to run into the local people and everyone is very friendly! read more

We usually visit Berne each summer and consistently try to find a good restaurant. This is difficult in this little town, so we tried this place 2 years ago for dinner and won't go back. I don't remember what we had, but we thought it was awful. Read Rhonda L.'s review. I suspect she hit the nail on the head. We're urban and don't appreciate over-breaded meat and canned vegetables and fruits. I'm actually appalled by the canned vegetables that are served in most restaurants in Berne and surrounding towns. This is an agricultural area, and I would expect to find some fresh veggies. read more

About the only place in Berne to eat on a Sunday. Fortunately the food is very well made and the portions are large. I particularly like the chicken teriyaki and the ham loaf is exceptional. If you decide to go with the buffet you won't be disappointed either--be sure to try the baklava for dessert. read more
