This is a local BAR--not a full blown restaurant. If you come here thinking so, you might be disappointed. However, they do have plenty of food options and they always have a bunch of customers, so you know either the drinks are good, the food, or both. I have been here three times over the last couple months and never had anything bad to say about it. The burger is the best one I've had in Wisconsin so far--the bread, cheese, the pickles--oh my goodness the PICKLES!!! It's just so good and the fries are great too. The fish fry though...I had to BEG my fiancée to let me come here every month for the fish fry from now on. You get three crispy cod filets, coleslaw (and I normally hate coleslaw) that is homemade and wonderful. You also get a piece of rye bread--can someone from the Midwest tell me why yall have a love of rye and not sourdough?? Asking for a friend! It comes with tarter sauce and a lemon that add the perfect final touch to the meal--all for just $10.95! I digress...this place is great! Not to mention the owner, Paul works the bar and is great to chat with. For people complaining of slow service--have you seen how packed it can be there? It's not a full service place, there are two cooks or so in the kitchen and the bartenders/owners all help with everything. Fantastic Hidden Gem: you need to check out Bert's Pub & Grill in St. Francis. It is on S. Lake Drive just south of Howard Avenue. Besides a fantastic Friday Fish Fry... you will love their sandwiches. They have a delicious Cuban, a wonderful Reuben, great burgers, a tasty build your own thin crust pizza, and lots more. The atmosphere is cozy both on the inside and the outside. The staff has got to be one of the friendliest and funniest that we have ever encountered. You will want to check this place out, especially when the weather is beautiful, so you can enjoy the front or the back patio. The ultimate neighborhood bar in Milwaukee. Nothing big or fancy. But food is good and reasonably priced. Beer is cold and drinks are strong. Staff is friendly and crowd is always fun. They've hit great burgers, a really good Friday fish fry, and tacos tuesdays are chesp. Highly recommend stopping by Bert's. read more

Small little hometown restaurant with patio and indoor seating. We walked in right before they closed but they were more than happy to take care of us. There is a full bar and a large food menu with daily specials that they rotate! Our favorite was the crispy buffalo chicken sandwich. Great food at a good price at a locally owned business! I've only had Bert's Fish Fry once which was recently. I have to say the place was packed and at the time but service was still good. Unfortunately the fish fry was a disappointment, very bland tasting. They need to put some flavor in the breading or season the fish with something that provides flavor. I'll go back to Berts but it won't be for the fish fry. read more

Terrible service. Only a 6 order of wings per person because "they are not a restaurant " the older lady said. No drink menu was crazy because wouldn't you have one if you were a bar,and not a restaurant. Overall experience was terrible. No waters were offered to us. I know why she said they weren't a restaurant, the 50cent wings were nasty. Fries were stale and no flavor. What made it a worse experience was that lady and her non welcoming behavior. This place is awesome. Initially was Casegrande's. Way, way back. Then became Butch's. Now it is Bert's. Have been here several times now and the food is ALWWYS scrumptious. Drinks are not bad either. Cheese curds are really great. On Friday, they have an excellent fish fry. They also have Murphy. I want to take him home with me, but would be tackled before I even left. Food is not good. There was a hair in my food. Nachos were not good. Fish was meh. Drink was too salty

Just ok. Atmosphere and the outdoor dining area is nice. Service was fine. Not terrible, not amazing. Charged $20 for a single casamigos margarita. Seemed a little steep for a single. Bit into one of our wings and noticed it was raw and bloody inside. We were given a new order, but probably would have preferred to just have them taken off the bill (which they weren't). I don't know about anyone else but biting into a bloody chicken wing doesn't make me feel like I want to order or eat more... Manager or owner didn't stop by our table to apologize or anything, but I saw him come out several times and gab with a different table about their European vacations. read more

This place is a joke. My friends and I frequent this location for Taco Tuesday and Wing Wednesday. Our last few experiences have been interesting to say the least. Not only did the owner make our waitress cry he also made us feel uncomfortable for ordering 18 wings. After that we decided to order two tequila shots to make up for the "inconvenience" of buying all of the wings. As our bill arrived we noticed two custom entries on it. The wonderful owner up charged us for the tequila shots! Not only did he lose a few customers for good I'd like to bet he lost a waitress as well. No one deserves to be treated like that. Triple cute and more cute! This place is a quaint neighborhood bar that looks like a house turned into a bar. We went in with a couple of friends and ended up seeing two more people we knew at the bar. Talk about your Cheers bar! The St Francis mayor was there tipping back a couple and was engaged talking with her constituents. It is such a darn cute little place! I will definitely go back there. Mixed bag of experiences here. Kind of depends on the bartender I guess. I got pretty annoyed with this super young, inexperienced bartender the other night. On the other hand, this other bartender was super to me. The crowd is older, but there to have some fun and generally good. Decent beer selection, limited wine selection - not sure about the food... yet! Can't say enough good things about Bert's. Come for the great atmosphere and fun food specials (taco Tuesday anyone?), but stay awhile and hope you get to see Murphy, the friendly bar dog. In my many visits to this establishment I've learned several things. The owner does flexible pricing if you run a tab. He's developed a horrible reputation in the area for trying to scam people on their bar bill. Very few bartenders here can make more than one drink at a time and the owners the worst offender. If you're lucky enough to have a bartender that can pour more than one drink at a time they won't last long because the owner can't scan them out of their tip money. And it doesn't matter if it's your anniversary, your birthday, you've spent hundreds or thousands of dollars at this place or whatever the special occasion, the owners Philosophy is and I quote," if you think you need a free drink then Berts Bar is not the place for you!" I will not return to this place until I hear it's under new ownership. read more

Walking into Bert's is the deja vu feeling that an episode of Cheers is about to start. Sometimes the crowd is the same one at the same time especially in summer. There are a few nice beers on tap and a generous wine selection. The full bar wraps around and is a nice place to watch the Packers and other sports teams in Milwaukee. Check out the food menu too as it it always changing with specials such as taco Tuesday which are scrumptious. I felt very comfortable here. It definitely has that "corner bar" feel with obvious regulars but without coming off like a dive or you are intruding. I had the butter burger and I almost ordered a second. It felt like a true Wisconsin Butter Burger, not like the pale imitations at Culvers or Steak n Shake or not being obnoxious with the butter like at Sollys. Sorry, I love Sollys but everyone has to admit we have a problem where if you dont eat it fast enough, it will sit in a lake of butter. Not here, butter was enough to give it a nice nutty flavor and blending in rather than being reminded there is butter on it with every bite. Phil the owner is great. Friendly, amicable and has that Old World charm you wish every owner had. He made it a point to greet me as he noticed it was my first time there, and made sure that I was taken care of when my glass ran empty. Only downside is that without Phil present, there were points where I felt a little forgotten by the bartenders as they moved from person to person. This prevents a full 5 star. I am definitely going back to try the Cubano, Pulled Pork Sandwich, or Taco Tuesday. read more

Bert's was an unexpected surprise to me. For whatever reason, I thought it would be more divey (my friend just said "I know this bar that does $1 tacos on Tuesday..."), but the space seems recently updated with several bar seats and a half dozen or so dining tables in a cute bungalow-style house. There is also a patio, and I'm sure a nice view of the lake when it isn't damn foggy out like it was on my most recent visit. My friend brought me in for taco Tuesday. She ordered two, so I ordered two. I think they were honestly the largest tacos I've ever had. They were served in soft flour tortillas filled with seasoned ground beef, lettuce, cheese, diced tomatoes, a squirt of sour cream, and a side of salsa. I made it back on a Wednesday and found out that the special then was sloppy Joes for $1. After the taco night, it wasn't a surprise to me to see that the sloppy Joes are generous as well. Bert's has a handful of beers on tap and also a variety of wine varietals available by the glass. I think the selection may change often, as the owner was offering to open new bottles upon request. There was also a food menu offering homemade pizzas, appetizers and more in addition to the bargain nightly specials. If you're in the neighborhood looking for generous eats at a generous price with a variety of drinks in a nice atmosphere, give Bert's a try. read more

Went to this establishment the first time ever last week. Thought I'd give it a try with my friend. We sat down and waited for quite a while before someone came and got our drink order. When I did receive my drink it was absolutely horrible. We ordered a nacho supreme to share. Waited for a very long time to get our food. Tortilla chips were stale soggy and imitation cheese dumped on top with some diced chicken. How do you screw up nachos?!! read more

A good bar with a great view! 3.5 stars only because I wasn't here long enough to really take this place in. I've driven past this bar just about every day of my adult life and finally stopped for a "fuel stop" while out on a bike ride. They have a beautiful deck and one of those "beasties" statues you see around town, very cool. The interior of the bar is very small but tidy. I'm guessing most of the patrons here live within stumbling distance. The bathroom was very clean and not "bar like" at all. We were only here for a quick beer and a Sloppy Joe. The bartender (maybe it was Bert?) was very friendly and offered us samples of several brews. Since we were in St. Francis, many of their options were of the very local variety. We enjoyed a few bottles of St. Francis Brewery varieties. I really feel bad for never stopping in here before. I hope to get back here again soon to get to know this place better! read more

I came here for the first time without expectations and not planning on eating. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Paul and Carol, the owners/bartenders/ servers.....everything! The food menu was limited, however it is more of a bar than a restaurant. We ordered the nachos that were typical of bar nachos. An elderly couple sitting beside us ordered the fish fry and ranted and raved about it the entire time. They also thoroughly enjoyed their soup. Although I wasn't drinking wine on this visit I asked to look at their wine list. It is VERY extensive and reasonable. Wine for me next visit!!
