The food was just meh. I had prime rib, and I had requested the steak be medium .... IT WAS MEDIUM WELL AND VERY FATTY. Hubby had Walleye which was served with the skin on, and that made it fishy tasting. We both had green beans, which were REALLY over cooked. And in hinesight might have been left over from the day before! The reason I say this is we were there for a 5:30 reservation and there were hardly any other guests then. So I don't know why they wouldn't have had nice, fresh, crisp green beans at that hour. The price was a little high, but we weren't surprised at that. We have been there many times over the years as the restaurant has been in business for a long time, and the decor shows that. It could use some updating. All in all it was an okay experience. We've been here several times for lunch, and we've never been disappointed. Inside is rustic and charming. Usually seat yourself, and there are plenty of tables. Fast and attentive service. The side salad is huge and always fresh. The ranch might be homemade (I really should ask) - it's so good! I highly recommend the buffalo chicken tenders. They are always crispy and well-seasoned. This BBQ is an absolute must when I visit Beaver. The 'house' salad dressing (a unique vinaigrette) is soooo good that I always add a salad to my meals. It's not fancy or modern and it can be loud. But the food is good, they have a nice selection and the prices are reasonable. Try a pork barbecue and a side salad with house dressing and you'll know why there's usually a line to get a table. read more

I've ate here many times over the years. Service has never been the best. It's slow. The food used to be ok. Now it's just disappointing. I ordered a salad with my salmon and broccoli instead of potatoes. I asked for no tomatoes on my salad and no roll with my dinner. I received both. Gave roll away and picked tomatoes out but I'm mad they were even there. Oil and vinegar for salad was good. Salad was pretty fresh. Broccoli was all different sizes lol. I prefer all bite size but I managed. It was Al dente, which I like. The salmon was cooked perfectly. It was small. I've had better. My daughter liked the spaghetti & meatball she said but she didn't finish it. So probably lying lol. My dad got it too and said it was good. He also got the wedding soup which is good. He said 7/10 for that. I only came here cause my dad wanted to for his birthday. It's not my favorite nor preference. They did however let me light his birthday cake I brought and we sang happy birthday quietly and he blew his candles out. I appreciate them allowing us to do that. We went for lunch at Bert's, a local restaurant that has been in business for many years. We ordered the chicken tenders salad and it was AMAZING! They use iceberg lettuce and place the chicken tenders on top of the lettuce and then top that off with perfect french fries. Also added were the usual tomatoes, cucumbers and shredded cheese. Our server was outstanding and she was very attentive to our needs. I used to come here when I was in Rochester High School 60 years ago. Bert's continues to serve excellent food and great service. Bert's wooden Indian is close, the prices proved very reasonable, and the atmosphere is quite nice...but several things made it difficult to enjoy as much as I had hoped. The French onion soup was as good as is rumored, but it was unreasonably hot. Scalding. It took until well after the meal arrived to be cool enough to enjoy. Presentation was spartan with a moderately overcooked hamburger arriving on a desert plate. I know that the fine dining is next door at the Angel, but at least serve a burger open faced on a proper plate so that we can see that you went to the trouble of toasting the bun. Maybe splurge and add a dill spear. A complete set of silverware would also have made it easier to handle. My final and probably most important comment has to do with traffic flow. The tables are tight enough that it makes it tough to get through the dining area when there are people in the chairs. The only consistently clear egress is the lane by the booths, and that is often blocked by wait staff at the POS terminal. It would be difficult if someone...or a number of someones... had to get out in a hurry. Remove some tables or, at the very least, sacrifice the last booth and put the terminal there. Overall, a solid 3 stars. read more

First off, Bert's is a home town tradition. As one other reviewer stated, every hometown needs a Bert's! Consistent, variety, fresh, friendly, tried and true. They bake their own pies, their soups are homemade, the food comes out piping hot. I don't visit home that often, but when I do, we visit Bert's. Try their French onion soup with the gooey, melted cheese over the top, or a cup of wedding soup! The caramel nut apple pie with ice cream, the fried fish sandwich or whatever sounds good to you! I've eaten lunch here a couple of times with co-workers, and everyone has left happy. This trip I had the grilled cheese with three cheeses and curly fries. Both were excellent! I ordered a small fry and there were too many for me to eat. My companions tried a burger with regular fries and a salad, both of them also enjoyed their lunches. In addition, they have a great soup selection. Last time I got the broccoli soup and it was delicious. I'm sure I will stop in again for lunch sometime soon! read more

Every small towner has "that place" that has a special place in their heart that they've been going to as a child. Bert's is mine. What I order has changed over the years, but ever since I had the walnut glazed chicken salad, I rarely order anything else (their house dressing is amazing). However, I'm a horrible yinzer because I hate fries on my salad, so they are the ordered on the side. I like the atmosphere here. Kind of a pub feel without the pub. The staff is friendly and efficient. We've never had any issues with staff attentiveness nor speed. The food, however, is mediocre at best. I had onion rings and a beef bbq sandwich. The sandwich was listed as a "specialty". Not a good sign for the rest of the menu. It was sliced roast beef. It was not smokey nor tender. Sauce was served on the side. Being from NC, I was highly disappointed and didn't finish it. The onion rings tasted odd. They either had weirdly seasoned batter or had been fried in left over oil from something else. I keep hoping I'll like it here, but I just can't read more

Don't be too hasty as to ask why it's a 1 instead of an 0, that 1 goes to the waitress and the waitress only; everything else was terrible. From standing in line and being roped off waiting for my table like I was in line for the Thunderbolt at Kennywood, to the grade school cafeteria floor, to the chairs that look like they got liquidated from some western/pirate themed place, to the terrible food. The food, oh boy... my boyfriend got a burger, simple enough, he wasn't asked how he wanted it, which, usually says they'll just smash it into oblivion anyways and smother cheese all over it. He was correct, and it came out on a plate fit for a slice of cake for some reason, had we not seen the edges of the plate, we would've thought it was just plopped on the table, and it didn't come with anything. He had to order fries separately? Strange. I, unfortunately, unfortunately got the stuffed shells, or should I say pasta sauce soup with shells on the bottom. This "frozen meal" came out on a bowl/plate, causing the sauce to pool and drown the shells; the meatballs and shells I noticed immediately were a frozen product and called bullshit. Honestly how f*cking embarrassing; you can't even be troubled to make a dang meatball. Our recent dinner was the Friday night special dinner for two, a lamb shank with potatoes and cauliflower purée. Amazingly, even the cauliflower was excellent. We shared a bottle of wine from the shrinking cellar choices. The restaurant was busy but not full on the cold, wet Friday night. The menu is limited but always evolving. Dishes are mainstream, suited for the local regulars. Execution is usually excellent. We always find a reason to return to this unique place which was our anniversary dinner spot for the first few years of our 45 year (and counting) adventure. read more

The wedding soup and the French onion soup is delicious! I don't eat gluten so the menu was pretty limited for me. A lot of fried and breaded foods. The floors are brick so it can get very noisy. For a Thursday night, the place was quite full so it took a while to get our fruit plate with chicken salad but it was good. Yeah, that name's verrry politically incorrect, especially when this is the "affordable" restaurant, the more upscale and expensive Wooden Angel being right next door. Curiouser 'n curiouser... However, when you walk in, there is a map of all the Native American tribes that were in pre-genocide Turtle Island, so perhaps the owner means well. They also offer an "Indian Burger" which is what I ordered. It's supposed to be a typical burger that is also topped with their Ham BBQ, but I substituted Pork BBQ instead. Ham, Pork, and Beef "BAR-B-Q" (sounds like a techno genre, like HI NRG...) is apparently the restaurant's specialty and is what got the place up and running way back in 1948 according to their official narrative. A bad burger it was not. In fact, it was more than capable and was reminiscent of the "King Kong Burger" that I think I had at Elby's once over a decade ago. It too was a burger with ham piled atop the patty. There was no BBQ sauce on the pork itself. Their website states that their BBQ specialties are "cooked in their own juices." The pork was good but came off as unnecessary. Hey, I wanted to try the BBQ but had to make a compromise with my burger fixation. I got mine with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and Monterey jack cheese if you care. On the side came the most fantastic shoestring french fries in all Creation. Usually I don't care for them this way, but they were sublimely cooked, and were served in a generous portion, not unlike The O but in a clean, respectable, out-in-the-sticks way. This was a "small" order to boot. I'm thinking there will be a pile of fries on the plate next to the burger, but no, I got a basket large enough to put a newborn baby in. Christ, float these down the Nile and watch a another miracle happen. Hallelujah for good, good, potato twigs! That wasn't all. An opening act occurred in the form of onion petals. Not onion rings (they do offer you a choice). Onion petals. Separated. Not in a "flower" or "bloomer" or anything like that. They're superior to onion rings in every way, yet you can't seem to get them around here anymore. Arby's used to sell them but inexplicably stopped. Fried to gold, the remoulade/horseradish (?) dipping sauce pushed these platinum. And yes I could have moved 500,000 to 1,000,000 units of them. I sampled my girlfriend's (she used to work here) Baked Fish and was blown to bits by its savory, melt-in-the-mouth quality. You can get it "marinated" (it's actually baked in whatever liquid you choose) in orange juice, butter & lemon, and "Cajun" among other things, but Kay chose buttermilk, and it worked brilliantly. 10 Oz. of North Atlantic Cod was turned into manna. For dessert, I got the Turtle Cheesecake and Kay got a typical layer cake called Chocolate Confusion. Sounds like a racehorse, don't it? Things got convoluted as we eat each other's desserts while tackling our own. Each dessert was carnal. The chocolate cake had a fudgy icing with chocolate chips, making it seem as if it was adorned in leather and studs. The cheescake was silken, moist... Whoa! This is an all-ages event. Get yer minds outta...Spencer's, ok? Yeesh! Seriously, they were both chilled sweet-treat perfection, each dessert alone being a pleasant way to cap off dinner. Having them both was an... I'd better no go there, but you should go to The Wooden Indian. If only they'd change that name and motif though. How about calling it The Wooden Saint? Or how about calling this place the Wooden Angel and renaming the fancier adjoining restaurant The Wooden Archangel? Eh? How 'bout it? read more

Darren and I came here today. I love the Baked Fish and usually get it everytime I go. Today I had it baked in the butter and lemon sauce, and it was silky, tender, and amazing. Darren helped me finish it, and I laughed as he moaned over how good it was. Their "specialty" may be the "Bar B Q" sandwiches (the meat's cooked in its own juices), but in my opinion, the baked fish is the thing to get. The onion petals are also excellent (as is the horseradish/mayo dipping sauce) and have a batter that doesn't come off. Darren and I split a Pecan Ball sundae, and we both loved it to death. Tonight we had THE WORST service we have had anywhere in a long time!!! We sat down and two tables that came after us were waited on before us... we waited 20 minutes for drinks, our food took 45 minutes and it wasn't correct when it did come. We won't be going back anytime soon. read more
