This is a local spot with lots of drink and food options. The staff are very friendly. The portion sizes are huge and for the price, totally worth it. Ice cold beer on draft. It is cool that the serve the true blue Pittsburgh sandwiches. I was not overly impressed with the taste of the food. It is pretty salty overall. Also they were out of mac and cheese and calm chowder on a Friday night when I was there so I was sad about that. Plenty of parking in back. Fruits are fresh and good. I got myself a strawberry, banana, and peanut butter smoothie with honey. It was delicious. There are plenty of tables if you want to sit with your drinks or wait for your food. The service was slow though. read more

The Back Door Tavern definitely stands out among the millions of other local places and this is why we decided to stop by for dinner. There is lots of space in the bar if you wish to dine there but we decided to sit in one of the spacious dining rooms available. After a few minutes we had our orders in and time to take in the ambiance of the dining room. Our observation time soon was cut short upon the arrival of our appetizers and as soon as they hit the table, we dove in. We got the pretzel, pizza rolls and onion rings to start of the night properly. All our appetizer items were fresh and delicious and set us up for the main attractions. My wife got the fish sandwich and I went with the sausage sandwich both of which were huge. The fish was cooked perfect, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. My sausage sandwich was also cooked perfectly and smothered in red bell peppers. Have I said before how much I love this hole in the wall? I really have never had a bad meal here, no kidding. It's typical bar type fair but damn it's good. I always seem to order a cup of chili to start. Then I'm usually ordering a burger or fish. But I've had numerous other things here and have never been disappointed. One plus too is that all the folks working there Have always been nice as well. Our server tonight has been there ever since I started going here about 20 years ago. She's just as kind as day one. Went to dinner with family; this is one of their favorite places. The menu has lots of interesting options. The big seller seems to be the sandwiches, and everyone else got those. Pittsburgh sandwiches have coleslaw and fries on them, and I tried a chicken and a Philly. The toppings work great, adding flavor and texture. The meats were really tasty and tender. The bread is great. And the sandwiches are huge- a "half" was twice as much as Sweetie could eat, so of course I helped her out. And there's a ton of very good fries on the side. I wasn't super hungry, and was intrigued by the appetizers. Tried to get corn bites with chili, but they were out. So, fried cauliflower, and spinach-artichoke Rangoons. The cauliflower was good, but not amazing: lightly breaded, decent portion. The Rangoons were very good- picture spinach-artichoke dip in a wonton, kinda flat, almost like a stuffed nacho chip. Decent portion but I wanted more. Service was very good. Prices- I don't know, I didn't pay, but I don't think it was bad. Location is great, with a lot out back and view of the quaint streets out front. Decor and comfort were good. We'd be back if we lived nearby. read more

This is a family owned and operated hometown tavern with a large on tap/bottled beer selection and always huge portions of delicious food. You will be going home with leftovers!! They are known for their Pittsburgh style sandwiches, Wings and Fish. Their wings are by far the best in beaver county...they for sure blow Zooky's wings out of the water! One of my favorites is the Thursday special : spicy chicken sandwich with blue cheese and shrooms!! it is out of this world!! To Note: It can get very, very crowded especially on Fish Fridays. Typical Western PA place. This is an old house turned into a bar and attached to some other odd looking building. Interior is tongue and groove pine with miscellanous crap hanging on the walls. We went on a Wednesday night and the restaurant part of the establishment was pretty full. My bf was bragging about the burgers. He was right, they are very good. He had a 3/4 pounder, I wimped out and had a quarter pounder. The fries were very hot and crispy, super good. They are supposed to be famous for their big fish sandwiches. Add another burger to my wall. I came back to Pittsburgh with the head of The Back Door Burger, a 10 oz. Angus Beefbeast with swiss cheese, ham, and mushrooms, in tow. I added grilled onions, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. I think I got bacon on it also. With that many fixings, something's bound to get lost in the rush. It took me a while, but that's only because I was toying with it, savoring each gloriously juicy chomp, after flipping it over of course to get the upper hand early. One more monster...dead. Oh, what else did we have might you ask? We shared a crabcake and deep fried battered pickles first. The crabcake was a little overcooked and tiny. The fried pickles were incredible though. Ever since I saw Emeril Lagasse make a batch on his TV show, I have pined for them. They look like English Potato "Chips" and are served with a nice, mild horseradish dipping sauce that I suspect Back Door Tavern makes themselves. They damn near coat their entire menu with that amazing house beer batter. Dredge a lump of sod in it, deep fry it, and I'll eat it. My date got a Fish Salad that is your basic salad accompanied by french fries and their exemplary beer battered fish. Sports fans willl be beside themselves as autographed pictures of everyone from Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu to Arnold Palmer and Joe Namath (!) adorn the walls. They also have quite the beer selection and are way spacier than they appear to be. Each time you turn a corner, you find another dining area. We drove out to New Brighton solely to try the wings at the Back Door Tavern based on rave reviews by a friend. Not sure how one would just stumble upon this place unless you lived in the area or had someone tell you about it. It's a neighborhood bar to be sure but perhaps just a tad better than most in that category. The menu is typical bar food with the fried appetizers like zucchini and mushrooms (never a bad thing!) and a wide selection of sandwiches and wraps. But we went for the wings. They were awesome. First of all, they are huge. They're not the whole wing (which are never my preference) but the size of these things will surprise you for sure. I had a hard time finishing my order of 12! I assure you thats unusual!!! And they're cheap!! At $6.95 a dozen? Great deal!!! A good selection of flavors including messy and dry rubs. The Rufus sauce is their hottest but not hot enough for me. A good flavor though. A pretty good draft beer selection but a huge disappointment for me that not one of the beers on tap was an IPA. Too many summer ales but I guess that's what their regular customers want. And it looks like they have a lot of those!! But I'm deducting a star for the omission. A great neighborhood bar. If I lived closer I'd be a regular. And I'd make sure there was an IPA always on tap! read more

My experience here starts in the waiting room. The place is packed. People everywhere. It was about a 1/2 wait on a friday night. The waiting room is not my favorite. It's awkward to say the least. When it's packed, you get moved all around. You stand outside. You stand in a foyer. You stand inside in a hall. Servers rush past you carrying trays. It's such a high-traffic area. I was uncomfortable & wanted to leave. Glad that I didn't. Even though it was super-busy, the service was quick & friendly. The beer list is fairly populated, especially for the area. The burgers are tasty. I ordered the banana pepper burger. I quite liked it. Juicy. A bit of spice. Yum! Nothing fancy, by any means, but if you want cheap bar food for a relaxed night out, why not!?!? read more

The Backdoor serves typical American bar food (Pittsburgh style, natch) -- huge portions, French fries a-plenty, lots of meat. And the food's really good in this context; their Thursday night-only spicy chicken sandwich is delicious, and I hold their Reuben sets the bar for pub Reubens. They've added some variety in the past year, including wraps, but it's really just a variation on the same theme: big portions, lots of meat, fries. I think the restaurant really shines, though, with the beer list. It's not extensive -- you won't find overly weird or rare beers here. But the place has a really solid selection of American craft beers, good imports (besides the standard Harp/Bass/Guinness combo), and sure, domestics lite beers. The cherry on top: the beer is really inexpensive, especially when compared to big-city prices. Trappist beers for $6? I'm in. They have a beer list, I also really dig the German-style beer garden seating in the larger dining room. It adds an communal atmosphere, even if it is sometimes forced. The back door is a place I must stop at every time I'm in town. The fried cod sandwich is amazing. It's so large you could make another sandwich with what is hanging off of your bun. The batter isn't too thick or too thin it's just the right amount. Hubby and Mum always order the Fish salad which they love but I don't understand. I think you only get it if your from PA.
