Did they close?!?! Atmosphere - Small local business. Limited metered street parking. Open 6 days a week; closed Wednesdays. Service - Good, easy in and out. Drop off, and pick up a month later. Yes, they are busy. Price - $28 to replace a zipper on one of my wife's purses. Great place for alterations in Alameda. This is the fourth garment I've had altered at Best Alterations and the job was not easy. I had her work on a Medusa Halloween costume that was way to big for me in several places. There was also a difficult arm piece that required major construction and it came out so nicely. She charged me $52 however it was totally worth it because there were 4 areas within the costume that needed work. I also went last minute to get a dress hemmed for my trip to Cabo and she did it the same day since I found it shopping right before my trip and only charged me $15 and it was same day service. Emma is amazing and has great customer service. Only concern is that they have only one parking spot in front of their location for free 35 minute parking. However, it tends to get filled up a lot and there are houses/apartments next to the shop on the right hand side that take up the street parking. Therefore parking can be challenging at times but Emma's work is worth it. read more

Requested to shorten the sleeves of a designer jacket and we agreed on doing this at the wrists. The structure of the jacket was perfect and I didn't want to modify the shoulders. They altered the shoulders without permission, with poorly done work and bulging seams. The loss of quality in the jacket means I wouldn't trust them with anything of value again. Mostly upset they did this without discussion and that it was so poorly executed. read more

I had a pair of jeans shortened with the original hem, and the first time I picked them up they were still a little long. I felt really bad for asking them to redo it, but she took it cheerfully and did not charge me to fix it. They came back perfect. The other reason for my review is the other pair of jeans, with a waist that was about 3 inches too big. They are made of very stiff denim, and I bought them despite the poor fit because we were traveling in Japan and they were part of a whole experience (customizing the patch, buttons, and rivets). Anyway, I don't know how she did it, but the jeans now fit perfectly and you can barely tell they were altered. She must have taken them completely apart because there are no visible darts or seams, no puckering, and perfectly matched thread. She is a genius. The pricing for the time it must have taken her to do the work is more than fair. I feel lucky to have this shop in Alameda! read more

Mom and pop shop in a small building with some Alameda charm. Friendly and reliable fast service. Had a few things done over the years. Over multiple washes and lots of use nothing ever came undone and I still have this as my go to spot. Parking I found across the street in the neighborhood. Prices seemed fair. I would recommend that anybody spend a few dollars so that things fit properly. Even the most expensive clothing looks horrible if it is too big or too small. read more

I pass by here regularly so when I needed an alteration to my custom tuxedo I knew who to call. I'm really happy I went ahead and got it altered. I've lost about 15 pounds since I originally had the tux made a few years ago. Best Alterations removed about 3 inches from the tux jacket and adjusted the sleeves for only $45 or so. I was really skeptical over the reviews here, but when I got here I was really impressed. You'll be greeted by a really sweet couple who will take your order, be honest, and give you a great deal. I asked to get a suit altered and got the pants hemmed, and he explained to me why I couldn't get it cuffed because I needed to have pants with longer material. Not only that, but he said that I didn't need to get my jacket altered and he explained why. I really appreciated his honesty and the owner helping me out. They have altered my children's clothing in the past and mine as well and always happy with their work. What amazed me most was how they repaired a hole on my cashmere sweater. It was as if the hole never existed, there were no tell tale puckering, creasing or anything. It was like a miracle. This is my second time coming here and getting some of my jeans gentrified, since it is no longer socially acceptable to wear beyond baggy jeans (well, you could but I'm not that hip) The couple that works here are always super friendly, I was just going to drop it off, but he insisted that I tried them on and we bobby pins the pant leg so I got exactly what I wanted. Not once, but for all 4 pair of jeans (all jeans are different). Loved the attention to detail and warm service. Shorten and taper on all 4. It was $140 out the door, they even gave me a lil discount for not needing them in a rush. Just got my pants back over the weekend, today I'm wearing the 3rd pair out of the 4. I AM SO GLAD THEY ARE BACK OPEN!!! I have been taking my jeans to them for years to have shortened, and I was patiently waiting for them to re-open after shelter-in-place. I debated going somewhere else during SIP, but I just like the ease/simplicity of taking things to them. I already know my measurements, so I usually pin where I want them to hem. They have always done a great job. I'm pretty sure they are cash only. It's a good idea to bring exact change. They do a receipt for you, and you can pay when you pick up. -Turnaround is generally about 5-7 days. read more

I went back to Best Alteration a couple of weeks ago to get some jeans altered; I bought a pair of jeans from American Eagle online that were the exact same style, length, and size as another pair I had bought previously, but for some reason the opening in the flare of the jean was much larger than the first pair. I wasn't happy with that and took the first pair I had bought as a sample, along with the new pair, to Best Alteration and asked him if he could use the sample to alter the new pair to match it. I needed the jeans that day, and the man was nice enough to tell me to come back in an hour and a half and he would have them done for me (it was only four extra bucks for same-day alterations, $24 in total). Sure enough he had them done on time and had narrowed the flare to match the first pair exactly. They look great, and the work was just as seamless and professional as when they altered the shirt I had brought them. Hands down, this is where I'll be coming from now on to get all my tailoring needs done. read more

I used to love buying items on sale and reworking it to fit me. Now I try my best to buy only what fits me, I don't have the time or the patience to dilly dally at the tailor. A week ago I got a few coats deeply discounted and discovered the measurements shown online were about a size off. I had used BAs for hemming some dresses and pants in the past and have been satisfied the past couple years. The tailor and his assistant can pretty much do anything and give options, as in the economical route or the more involved pricier path. There is one small dressing room and it can get a little backed up when it's noon on any day. I would come in the AM. My thick wool coats look great after a little nipping and tucking. I was living in Alameda for several weeks and decided this was the time to get some tailoring done that has been impossible for me for several years. I live on a tropical island but have a favorite corduroy travel blazer for when I am "up north" and it has always called out for elbow patches. Stopped in at Best Alteration and they immediately said they could do it, found patches that matched, and delivered it to me quickly because of an upcoming trip of mine. This was no easy stitch on job because the blazer is lined, so it meant opening a seam, opening the lining, placing and securing the patch, and then returning all the seams to their original condition. The end result -- the elbow patches look like they were there from the start. Couldn't ask for a better outcome. Now I know they are there, on my next stay in Alameda I will bring some more of my clothes needing alteration along for them to work on. THANK YOU! read more

It was my first time getting my dress pants hemmed. This business is own and run by a husband and wife. The husband did most of the talking and measuring, while the wife did most of the actual alterations. He did a really careful job of measuring how much material needed to be altered for my pants. Make sure you bring the shoes that you planning to wear with the pants to the measurement to get a good result. As I said, this was my first time getting my pants hemmed so I don't have a basis of comparison to the other services, but my 3 dress pants came out really nice and well crafted. I got the non-cuffed for $9 each pant. I believe it is $12 for cuffed hemming. I can't vouch for the work for female clothing, but I do see many female customers. I came here to get my clothes altered and leave. I don't stay there long, so I didn't care too much for the appearance inside or outside the place. It has a small dressing room for you to change and try on your clothes. As for parking, you will have to park on the main street (Part St.) or park at the crossing streets. The main street is pretty busy in the afternoon so it might be hard to find parking, but the side streets are not as crowded. read more

This place is owned by the cutest and friendliest couple ever. I've been wanting to get a slip sewn in to one of my dresses, and swung by this place due to the all the great Yelp reviews. The man greeted me with a sweet and friendly hello, took a careful look and even had his wife come over to look the dress over. They assured me it would be possible and originally set pickup date for the following week. I asked if I could get it sooner, since I wanted to wear the dress for a wedding that weekend, and they were very accommodating and said I could pick it up on Friday afternoon. Swung by on Friday and the work they did was perfect! Note: they are cash-only. Also, they're located on Park Street--easy to miss since the shop is small. Tell these guys NOT to iron your pants after hemming. For my last visit, I picked up three pairs of pants and two pairs of jeans had permanent crease seams and discolorations. Maybe this was a freak accident because all of the many pants I brought in previously had creases that could be ironed/washed out. I've always had to wash all of my pants after their hem jobs because I don't prefer creases in my jeans or chinos. I'm pretty sure that if you want creases in your pants, you'll take care of them yourself. They still do good work for a good price though but speak up if you are really uptight about how you want things. read more
