We bought a beautiful Yamaha W102b from Kevin last year. He is very friendly and willing to spend time to explain the difference between each models. I came to his store 3 times and spent at least 30 min each time to try out pianos before making the purchase. I really appreciate that he is not trying to push me to make decision quickly and offers me his honest opinions. I am also very pleased with his awesome customer service. There were some issues about the tuning of the piano after I bought it and I could not get a hold of the piano technician. I left Kevin a message. He responded in a timely manner and offered to come and fixed it himself the next morning. It has been a half year since we got our piano. Both my son and I are happy with the piano and really enjoy it. There are good inventories for Yamaha pianos at the store. I have pretty much checked out all Yamaha piano carriers around the San Jose area when searching for the piano. This store carries the most refurbished Yamaha pianos on site. Kevin was great to deal with. I first approached him on Ebay as he had a piano listed I wanted to buy. I checked it out myself in person at his store while vacationing in CA, paid someone to double check that the piano was mechanically perfect and decided to go for it. I then had Kevin ship it to Texas for me. He worked with me on price to make the differential from buying in Houston less steep. After that, inclusive of freight, price was almost comparable to buying locally (as no sales tax applied when shipping to another state), but the experience was surely better and more pleasant (less pushy and more transparent and professional, plus more importantly. it was the piano I wanted after a ton of research, not the piano the local know-it-all guy wanted me to buy...). Communication was always prompt and courteous throughout the whole process, before, during and after. It all worked out great and if in the future I had to buy again from him, I wouldn't hesitate to just buy on Ebay unseen or even let him pick a piano for me. I just bought a piano from Kevin and I'm verry happy with the experience. Let me describe it to you. I saw his advert on Craigslist (under the name bestpianodeals.com). I was looking for a Yamaha U3 piano. I called him up, made an appt. and drove down to his warehouse/store in San Jose. He had a dozen or so Yamaha U3 models, all of them refurbished in Japan. He opened one up, removed the panels to show me what exactly the refurbishing consisted of. The refurbishing work is excellent. The pianos both outside and inside look absolutely brand new. He then let me play as long as I wanted on all the models. Finally, I found one I particularly liked. I took a picture of the serial number so that I could later refer to it. He gave me a price on the spot, which was lower than anything quoted for U3 models by other piano vendors. I left thinking the price was fantastically low for a piano in such excellent shape and with new felts and whippens, new key tops, a perfect cabinet, as well as a piano bench, casters, and--above all--a 10-year warranty, free delivery, and a free tuning. But I wanted to do a tad more research. So, I went to several more piano dealers, up and down the peninsula. None could match his price and none had pianos as completely refurbished. So, I called Kevin, gave him the serial number and--gulp!--mailed him a check. I wondered about my sanity sending a check for several thousand dollars to someone I'd met once and whose last name I didn't even know. But not to worry, the correct piano in perfect shape was delivered exactly as promised at the agreed upon date and time. I bought a piano from these guys and I am happy. The proprietor Kevin runs this business in partnership with his brother whom I didn't meet. They import grey-market Yamaha and Kawai pianos from Japan after having them refurbished there. Kevin was very communicative and friendly, and was happy to answer all the questions I asked. I am knowledgeable about pianos and I ask a lot of questions. :-) To some of my questions (like what parts are replaced during refurbishment) he said he didn't know that information for any specific piano, saying just that "they replace whatever they need to." I didn't try to learn what refurbishing company they use, but it's important to realize that when their ads say these pianos are "factory refurbished" they don't mean that they're refurbished by the original manufacturers. Instead they're refurbished by independent concerns that have refurbishing facilities that I suppose could be called "factories." If there's anything deceptive going on here, I suppose this would have to be it. I don't think anything is manufactured at these "factories." But Kevin does not try to hide the fact that the refurbishing is not done by the manufacturers; he is open about it and is happy to discuss it. Another thing I didn't ask (because I didn't care) is whether the parts used in refurbishing are Yamaha and Kawai parts or aftermarket parts. I imagine they're probably aftermarket but I don't know. The refurbishers add middle pedals to the older Yamahas that lacked them. The new middle pedals actuate a system that drops a felt mute between the hammers and strings for very quiet practicing. Not musically useful, but more or less standard on newer upright pianos and could come in handy for practicing. In all the pianos I looked at, the hammers and strings looked new, the cases were in beautiful condition, and the actions were regulated evenly. The keys were all in perfect condition and the tuning pins looked new. It looked like the sound boards were all original (not surprising -- sound boards last a long time and you wouldn't bother refurbishing such a piano with a sound board problem), and I couldn't tell for sure about the pin blocks but I think most or all of them are original, too. In the few pianos I examined carefully, there were no cracks or other problems with the bridges. In short, these pianos really are in like-new condition from a functional perspective and from a cosmetic perspective. When I was there, there was a range of how the pianos were voiced, even within the same model. Each piano was voiced evenly (some with a few imperfections that a technician could correct rather easily), but between pianos there were considerable differences. This offers the customer a meaningful choice between pianos of the same model. He had about 20 or so pianos on display, all uprights, mostly Yamaha (models U1, U2, U3, and one UX) and a couple of Kawais. With any piano purchase I recommend taking someone knowledgeable along, preferably a professional piano technician. If you do, I predict you'll like what you learn about Kevin's pianos. It really is the case that for a much lower price than new, you're getting a piano that's very much like new when it comes to both its playing and its cosmetic condition. We recently bought a piano from Kevin for my 11 year old daughter. He focus's mainly on refurbished Yamaha U series, which, I have learned, are fine factory pianos for the money. All of Kevin's pianos look brand new both inside and out, but each sounds and feels different so I advise trying all he has. Kevin is honest, will tell you he does not play piano, and will encourage to bring a technician you trust to make sure you are happy with what you are purchasing. As Robert K. mentioned below, Kevin will tell you as much he can about a piano and will answer your questions the best he can about the refurbishing process, and I believe he is honest about what he knows and does not know about each piano. I am not a professional piano player or technician, but I know what sounds good and feels good to me. I learned that my daughter is the same way. She played all the pianos on the floor, picked her favorite, and we bought it. This was an enjoyable experience, Kevin is a nice guy, the price was fair, and the piano is great. I was unsure whether to give Kevin four or five stars because I think I would have to look the world over before I could honestly say something is "As good as it gets" which is the description Yelp assigns to five stars, but I don't have that kind of time. This review has been a long time coming. I'm a piano teacher who moved from Boston to California one year ago. I had to sell my Steinway M to help with the down payment of our new house. The real estate in CA is substantially pricier than MA. Obviously I needed a new piano to teach and practice on, so I started searching craigslist for a Yamaha U series or a Schimmel upright. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but I was completely surprised at how much I loved all the pianos I tried! That was unusual because I'm very picky.
