I had a great stay at this motel. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and made check-in quick and easy. The location was convenient, with restaurants and stores nearby. It was quiet at night, so I got a good night's sleep. I don't like giving low reviews, I truly want to support all of the smaller local businesses. This one's easy though, it seems they don't want anything above a 2 so that's what I'll give. Very run down property with little to no upkeep evident. I wish I could say you get what you pay for but unfortunately that's not the case! The room was just like the outside, old, dirty and outdated. Pillows were lumpy and completely unusable, shower had the pink mildew around the entire rim, very little water pressure and a hodge podge of mismatched soap, lotion and shampoo from other hotels! The sofa was so dirty we wouldn't even sit on it! All that said, we are not picky nor are we clean freaks! We knew it was a local hotel and had no expectations other than a comfy bed and safe location. Well, we expected the amenities promised of course, like the laundry facilities! Unfortunately I can't recommend Sunset Inn and we'll stay elsewhere next time. read more

Easy to find, this is our second time staying here and we like it because its pet friendly. We had a little trouble checking in. We use Hotels.com and we thought we paid on line but when we arrived they ask for payment which isn't a big deal but as a business this would be a concern if we were reserving for an employee. Other that the window sill being dirty with dead bugs, it was clean. Just keep the curtains closed and you won't notice a thing. It's a little run down lots of drywall patches, multiple types of texture and paint. Carpet seems worn down but hey it's pet friendly. No, my dog didn't have an accident. JS The bed was fairly comfortable but the pillow was horrible. I had a tough time getting to sleep and when I finally did another customer got to their room at 12:30am. I could hear him/her walking around for about 30 minutes before the person went to bed I assume. Early morning wakers starting their cars right outside, made my dog bark (sorrry) so I got very little sleep but it's better than sleeping in the car. They have Keurig machine that had a pod in it from the previous person but no big deal just threw it in the trash and prayed the machine isn't gross. Made a cup, brushed the teeth, packed and headed out and down the road noticing the other placed I might try next time. read more

Not recommend, my daughter stayed there last weekend and she was very unhappy, the owner went into their room and turned off the air conditioner and opened up the window and curtains, mind you it was near 100°, they never cleaned or gave new towels just opened it up and left, plus she said it had a sticky feel to it, "NOT RECOMMENDED". read more

This place may not be the fanciest inn around but the owners very very nice and allowed me to switch rooms when I requested a change. They are very kind and accommodating. I'm glad I was able to help this small business instead of going to the best western down the road. read more

Unless you make six figures and require granite countertops DO NOT stay here, go ONLY to the Best Western, you'll be miserable here. If you make six figures and require granite countertops and the Best Western is booked, you're choice is the Sunset Inn or a motel with tweakers renting the room next to you to live in week to week. Take your pick or drive 3 more hours to Boise, you are COMPLETELY screwed if it's snowing, hint hint snow, late checkout :) 24 hour lobby with HEALTHY snacks in a town that shuts down at 8pm. You have to call a phone number and an employee will meet you in the lobby in 5 minutes. Big whoop, I can wait 5 minutes to get pretzels and a sparkling water at midnight. WiFi and a nice desk to work at if you're traveling for business or work remotely. I was there for a quiet place for a remote job interview for my stay. Free cancellation if it is possible and you ask REALLY politely and nicely and have a genuinely good reason. If you call directly they will negotiate the price if they aren't fully booked already. No less than 80. Late checkout for a small fee, I think I paid 15 bucks on my credit card, it was so nominal I don't even remember. I checked out at 6pm. AGAIN this is only if someone has not already booked that room!!! You cannot get a late checkout on a room that another person has reserved! That's not how the hospitality industry works!!! Spotless room. Nice beds and bedding. Nice TV with Dish. Tub big enough for a relaxing soak, usually I book rooms with spa tubs when I can. Epic customer service. I had unpacked my things because I am an extremely organized and professional person and I was there ON business. I drew a bath and the water was a tiny bit brown (rust?.) I called the number (it was 10pm) for lobby service. The manager was in my room within 5 minutes. He apologized PROFUSELY, moved me to a BETTER room, and did not charge me for that night's stay. Omg a makeup cloth and nice toiletries. Balcony isn't a true balcony because the building is built into a mountain, but I actually liked it better that way. A real live hole in the wall kind of place. Cleaning is minimal - floor was sticky maybe from ? or a cheap cleaning product - (check the coffee maker for sure). Painting & caulking is super sloppy (didn't they even watch a Youtube?). Don't pull the sheets or blanket up to your face. One of the owners raced to the room while checking out with the other one probably to be sure that we didn't trash the place - as if that was possible! Why stay here when there's a Best Western down the street - cuz we were stupid and thought supporting the local owners was a good thing. HaHa! read more

Room smelled like cigarette smoke and vomit. There is sign at check-in saying you'll be charged $250 if you smoke in the room. How can they tell?? The place has obviously been smoked in for years. The popcorn ceiling was even stained with years and years of cigarette smoke build up. As non-smokers, we found the stench of the room disgusting. Thankfully I had a Poo-Pourri handy so used the entire bottle to make the room livable for one night. It does look like they are trying to upgrade the place but they are going about it all wrong. They need to do one room at a time, top to bottom (and maybe clean while at it). There were large spider webs along the top of the walls. The Keurig was utterly filthy. We took it apart and cleaned out A LOT of mold and old residue. The bedding has hairs on it. Lots of hairs. That were not ours. Made us wonder if the sheets had even been changed. The a/c-heater stunk when we turned it on. And it was covered in old dust. The hangers were dirty. The clothing rack was dirty. The microwave was clean. I have to give them a star for that. Overall, I highly suggest you avoid this motel. If you do find yourself with no options for lodging in John Day, plan to bring cleaning supplies, your own sheets, and absolutely make sure to take that Keurig apart to get the mold out before using it. read more

It's centrally located to business for both shopping and dining, the rooms are spacious (not large but definitely not cramped). The cost was minimal, $60 for the night. Another pleasant surprise is the sheets are really soft. They're probably just soft from lots of wear but it reminds me of going to grandma's house for the weekend. Oh and there is a fridge, microwave and WiFi. The two stars are because the walls are exceptionally thin, ID is not required, the towels are incredibly dingy (my kitchen towels are old and are in no way this dingy), there is a broken towel rack repaired with duct tape rather than buying a new one for $10. Although the room is non-smoking, people's cigarette smoke from outside completely penetrates the room to the point that you'd never know if it was smoked in or not and as a non-smoker I don't want to smell like smoke. read more

Let me say first that I have never stayed at this motel. I tried to once, and will not try again. My favorite motel in John Day was full, so I went up the street to this place, because the sign showed vacancy. When I went into the office the receptionist curtly informed me that there were no rooms. "But your vacancy sign is lit", I responded. "We always have it lit", she said. Nice. Why on earth would I patronize a business which, as a matter of policy, advertises a product it does not have? So this place wasted my time, and I won't bother ever going there. read more
