I'm almost positive it was the owner or manager. He gave really no explanation and didn't even apologize. He was rude, inconsiderate and sarcastic. I stay in hotels a lot for work (I stayed in hotels over 100 nights in the last year) and have never had anything like this happen before. I will never stay in a Best Western again.

The free hot breakfast was cheese omelets that taste like water with cheddar, and turkey sausage patties. Very minimal and low class for a Hampton Inn. Granted that Ashland, Ky. Is not a popular tourist town with lots of sites and things, or even hotels to draw anyone. This hotel had mostly out of town contractors and construction workers, and weary travelers that pulled off the highway to stay somewhere. It has a Walmart right next to it, and an old broken down long since closed car wash on the other side of it. It's on the outskirts from downtown Ashland, right off I-64. I have stayed at some very nice Hampton Inns over the years, and I will still consider them in the future, but this is an old one that is in need of a complete renovation, but based on where it is, it probably would not be beneficial to spend the money doing it.

I wanted to visit some of my family in Kentucky and didn't want to spend a fortune on a hotel, so Super 8 seemed like a good economical choice. We reserved a king bed room nonsmoking for 1 night. After tax it totaled $75.90. Not bad at all, in my opinion. (NOTE: This hotel does not have an elevator, but there are handicap rooms available.) Our room was on the 2nd floor right by the stairs, room 224. I didn't mind not having an elevator because we had just eaten a large amount of food at the Old China Buffet and needed to burn some calories anyway (haha). The staircase was much wider than a standard staircase, with plenty of room for guests to come and go without bumping into one another, so that was nice. The room itself looked like it had recently been renovated. The decor was nice and simple, with a modern feel. The bedding was bright white with a decorative coverlet and looked very clean. The bathroom was super clean and newer looking as well. I worked in the hotel industry for 4-5 years, so I always look for signs of bedbugs and other insects before spending the night anywhere. I checked the room over and couldn't find signs of bugs or droppings of any sort. The mattress was in a secure cover underneath the sheets, so I feel like this hotel is making a conscious effort to prevent any type of infestation from critters that people might carry in with them. (See my photos for a pic of mattress cover) It was stated in a previous review from a few years ago that they had bedbugs in at least one room. In my experience, I believe that they got rid of them. Kudos to this hotel for taking control of it before it got out of hand. We had a very comfortable stay and will stay here again.

I took my shoes off and was walking in the Room with my bare feet... and when I got into the shower I noticed black stuff was coming from where I stepped. I was appalled. I understand without any problem that their staff is limited right now and the rooms are only cleaned after someone stays. However this level of dirt did not happen in one or two stays. I did notify the front desk clerk that before they rented out Room number 112 again they needed to clean the carpet. I also showed her the towel. She said she would report it. I hope she did. I am not sure that I will stay there again.

The staff is always friendly, and there are nearly always snacks and extras provided- coffee, cookies, and popcorn. It's always fun to pick something up on the way in, or come down for a snack later in the day. The rooms are small and simple, with the basic necessities. They do have a mini-fridge and a microwave, so save your leftovers! The bathroom is small with a walk-in shower, but it does the job. There is a pocket door, so it doesn't lock. The sink is separate from the toilet and shower, which is a bonus when getting ready in the morning or at night. There is a fitness room and an indoor pool, as well as a business center. Breakfast is included, and includes scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes, cinnamon apples, biscuits (with hot gravy to add). There is a waffle station, as well as cold items like cereal, fruit, bread, and bagels. Pretty much anything you'd expect at a hotel breakfast, with plenty of room to sit and eat. This is a great location, and we've always enjoyed this hotel. If you need a spot to stay in the area, I'd recommend it!

If you do hike it you will pass Pullman Square and several restaurants that you may want to try later on. The menu is worth the walk. Both times I came here, (once in the daylight and once at night), I struggled to see the entrance to the curvy driveway which goes straight up a hill where the hotel sits. (5/5) I Came to…read moreGamble...I Left with New Friends and a Slight Liver Injury Visited: Tuesday, July 28, 2026 I've played blackjack in casinos from Oakland to Reno to Vegas Montreal to Detroit to Tunica, Mississippi to Atlantic City hell even to Metropolis, Illinois. This little casino just off from Charleston, West Virginia? Best. Single. Casino. Experience. Of. My. Life. No, it isn't the biggest casino. No, it isn't the fanciest. The décor has an older, darker feel with warm tones, and some people might describe it as a little worn. I'd describe it as comfortable enough to accidentally spend your mortgage payment in. My buddy Brett and I sat down expecting to kill an hour before continuing our drive to Pittsburgh. Three hours later... ...we were still there laughing our heads off. The blackjack tables were outstanding. The players actually knew how to play, which meant no endless debates over whether to hit a 17 or split tens. The games moved at a great pace, everyone was having fun, and despite only walking away about $40 ahead, I honestly couldn't have cared less. In fact, I probably tipped away more than I won. Worth every dollar. Then there was Dakota. Dakota isn't just the best blackjack dealer I met on this trip... He's one of the most entertaining dealers I've ever played with. Somewhere between doubling down and busting the table, we learned he plays bass for the West Virginia metal band Dismember the Outcome. By then the table had become less of a blackjack game and more of a comedy club. We laughed so hard that I genuinely forgot I was gambling. That has never happened before. And then there was the pit boss. I think his name was Dave. Imagine a sharply dressed casino supervisor making sure every blackjack payout is correct...then casually jumping into a conversation about the Lamb of God concert he had attended. That's when I realized this place was different. Behind every suit was somebody you'd happily have a beer with. Speaking of beer... Whoever told me drinking is West Virginia's state sport may have been onto something. Because the real MVP of the afternoon was our cocktail waitress. At one point Brett and I had become just intoxicated enough to loudly yell across the casino for another well vodka shot and Diet Coke. Classy? Absolutely not. Professional? Definitely not. Her response? Without missing a beat she smiled across the casino floor and said, "I gotcha, hun." I swear she covered fifty yards faster than a wide receiver running a post route. By the time I blinked, the drinks were already sitting in front of us. There are Southern belles... ...and then there are Southern cathedral belles. She moved through that casino like the patron saint of thirsty blackjack players. If that's what being welcomed through the Pearly Gates feels like, sign me up. And if, through some clerical error upstairs, she's tending bar somewhere a little warmer... ...well, at least I know the cocktail service will be phenomenal. By the time we left, I'd probably spent almost $100 tipping dealers and cocktail staff, and I don't regret a penny of it. Casinos often try to impress you with marble floors, giant chandeliers, and flashy architecture. Mardi Gras Casino impressed me with something much rarer. People. Wonderful dealers. An unforgettable pit boss. Fantastic cocktail service. A table full of smart players. And enough laughter to carry us all the way to Pittsburgh. Five stars without hesitation. We'll be back. And when we do, somebody tell Dakota to shuffle up...we've got another three hours of stories to tell.
