They are useless. I called them months ago. They said they would call me back. Never did. I have called many, many times since, left messages, and never had one call back. I think the money they raise from donors is going to the wrong areas, as Bet Tzedek does nothing. Looking at all the other reviews it does look like they are a waste of time. read more

I recently posted a negative review about Bet Tzedek. I am changing my review because I had a great experience with their support. Funny thing is the contacted me soon after the original post. Well I want to give them 5 stars now. The person the helped me gave the best support ever. The staff emailed me the filling documents and walked me through how to fill them out, file with the court and attend the hearing. I appreciate the detail, care, and suggestions. Los Angeles Superior Court gives them money to help folks file conservatorship cases. I used them and my verdict is that are a D, hence the 2.0 stars, so almost a failure. They took weeks to reply to 2 emails and then just stopped replying, I had to figure out things myself. I am sure this is not the type of service they advertised to the county when they agreed to provide conservatorship services. It is unjust to the public and they are not being good stewards of our tax dollars. Los Angeles County should cut ties with them. read more

I found their legal clinic to be a completely worthless waste of time. Literally none of my questions were answered -- except in the most general, superficial manner possible (in many cases, they simply repeated information back to me that *I* had already provided them). At this point, I don't know anything more than what I knew before I contacted them. I know that attorneys' time is extremely expensive, but I spent a fair amount of time preparing for this clinic -- and I feel like that time was anything but reciprocated (or respected). read more

Organization set to help when you're really in need, as their name entails, however when my husband died suddenly and I needed someone to guide me and my kids, they sent a letter with no explanation and said no. Jordan Aiken was amazing throughout my entire process they helped Me change my name and gender marker legally. I don't know what I would have done without them the process was very timely but it was worth it and the no judgment that everyone gave within the office was really great. They really are willing to help with many different legal situation give them a call, they also work with what you can afford kind of like a sliding scale so that helps soo much. read more

My case was referred to Bet Tzedek by a social worker and I received a call, provided details, later met with two Bet Tzedek volunteers. Nothing else happened. The person responsible left Bet Tzedek and no-one else became involved. I enlisted the help of a social worker to find an answer. Finally Bet Tzedek called and said they couldn't help me. My personal feeling is that there were ways they could easily have helped me -- by accompanying me to a court hearing, for example -- but instead they dropped my case. read more

I used Bet Tzedek to help navigate the court system to become medical conservator on behalf of my elderly mom. This was very important, since mom has dementia, and cannot communicate at all. I needed to become her medical conservator in order to get her specialized medical care - no providers would deal with us without it. BT took all my information calmly and professionally. They stayed in communication with me in a timely way - I had no problem finding my lawyer or his assistant when I needed them. We also swapped documents as needed through the mail, minimizing in-person visits. They did their best to expedite my case, and it seemed to close quickly. The people in this organization are professionals who practice law to help other people. There are some for-profit lawyers who would do well to learn from Bet Tzedek's example. read more

Bet Tzedek hasn't been of any help to my mom with assisting my grandmother. They have been aloof and hard to reach this whole year during the process. April to now has been the worst times for my mother because she has had to do EVERYTHING by herself. To top it all off, they have lost her paper work. It is unacceptable and truthfully deplorable the lack of help and compassion they have given my mother. This is a tough situation and they should be of more help because that is their job! Nothing you're read or heard about Bet Tzedek is true. They do not take your financial status or source of income into consideration when deciding whether you are eligible for their services (which I was told DO NOT include defending against illegal evictions) or not. I'm being evicted. I am disabled. I cannot afford legal representation. I called Bet Tzedek to make an appointment on a Tuesday afternoon and got their voicemail. I left a message that I urgently needed to make an appointment with them. 4 days later I got a call back from a shrew of a woman who insulted me, told me I didn't know what I was talking about, and that, like H.V. (above) I should go to the courthouse and get a copy of the files. When I told her I already had the files for the whole case sitting in front of me, and started telling her what had been filed on which dates, she told me (without asking a single question regarding my financial status or whether or not I was reliant upon government assistance) that I would have to hire a private attorney because Bet Tzedek doesn't handle these matters. So... (1) If you're being evicted, don't call them. Apparently they don't handle evictions anymore. Also... (2) If you are below the poverty level and receive public assistance, it doesn't matter. They don't ask about your financial status or source of income. They can determine that you have to hire a private attorney without any of that information. I'm not sure WHAT Bet Tzedek does or WHO they help, but they don't help disabled people living on meager fixed incomes defend themselves against illegal evictions. I cannot recommend highly enough an organization called "Tenants Together." I filled out an intake application online on their website (http://www.tenantstogether.org/) and received a call-back in less than 24 hours. They were so unbelievably helpful! They told me which laws were applicable in my case, and exactly what I needed to do to stop this illegal eviction...all over the phone, without my even having to leave my home, and without insulting me a single time. The representative I spoke with was professional and knowledgable and made me at least feel as though he empathized with me & my situation. Truly a pleasure to speak with. The most productive & stress-relieving 36 minutes I've spent since this whole mess began! At this time, they only address the needs of tenants being displaced due to the current foreclosure crisis, which fortunately, was the case with me. They do not provide legal representation, but did refer me to two places that do, at little or no cost, in the event I needed to retain representation, which I didn't because they told me everything I needed to know to handle the matter myself. Their number is 888-495-8020. If your eviction is NOT due to a foreclosure, an excellent resource for all tenants facing eviction is the California Department of Consumer Affairs Housing Rights Center, LA County (800-593-8222, http://www.hrc-la.org/). Upon hearing the facts surrounding my case, they assured me that the new owners of the property that I rent could not evict me in the manner of which they were attempting, that it was beyond illegal, and well into the realm of criminal! They also referred me to a the LA County Bar Association Referral & Information Service Hotline, through which you can get a free 30-minute consultation with an actual attorney who has reviewed the facts surrounding your case & is willing to represent you. That number is 213-243-1525, or their website is https://www.smartlaw.org/ There's help out there, at little or no cost. I'm sure I've just barely touched on the tip of the iceberg here, as mine was a simple, open-and-shut case, with three grounds on which the whole thing could be dismissed (1: The attorney who prepared & filed the paperwork on behalf of the new owners of the property I rent used an incorrect address for my residence on every piece of paperwork throughout the entire case. 2: The new owners failed to notify me that they had purchased the property & did not instruct me where or to whom to make my rent payments. 3: They accepted 3 consequent rent payments from me AFTER they had filed an Unlawful Detainer alleging non-payment of rent against me. I found help right away to get the matter resolved, so I didn't have to explore all the resources available to me. For sure, though, Bet Tzedek is NOT a resource, NOR are they available. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME with this organization. There are far too many other resources, people who aren't rude, who will hear you out, and give you sound, real-world advice and referrals. I tried to use Bet Tzedek over 30 years ago when my roommates and I were being evicted by a landlord even though we had never missed or were even late with a payment. He would walk in on us when we were in the shower or getting dressed and yell at us that he wanted us out so he could raise the rent sky high. He once pushed me against a wall and tried to strangle me. Everything was documented but Bet Tzedek was not interested. Bet Tzedek was not only uninterested in our case, they were rude, dismissive and almost contemptuous of us. They seem to think that they exist on a higher moral plane than everyone else and indulge in a type of social justice snobbery. They talked down to us as though we were stupid and worthless charity cases that deserved no respect. They were nearly as abusive to us as the landlord! I ended up representing myself and my roommates...went to the law library downtown and put together my case...and I won! I would NEVER recommend this organization as they are arrogant, self-righteous hypocrites. read more

Bet Tzedek advised me (tenant) to go to the courthouse and pick up the summons for unlawful detainer filed against me and insisted I do so. The truth is, the landlord is responsible for serving the summons and if landlord fails to do so, I can motion to dismiss the entire unlawful detainer action for failure to properly serve the summons. Further, there are defenses against unlawful detainer. For example, in my case the landlord billed me $300 over the monthly rent without clear explanation. Landlord over-billing is a legal defense to unlawful detainer. There are a number of defenses available. Bet Ztedek did not advise me about any defenses, they just insisted that I pay pay pay, or go pick up the summons from court and voluntarily serve myself. I believe they are on the landlord's side or landlord's association. They are not to be trusted. I called several other free legal services and they explained to me that I have no obligation to do anything until I'm properly served papers by the courthouse, and then they explained they would meet with me to file answers. Do not trust Bet Tzedek, they are with the landlords and provide advice geared to benefit landlords. read more

Thanks to this place, I was able to file a wage claim that seemed tricky for me as my work hours varied. But then right after helping me calculating the wage hours they closed my case. As I'd provided most of information I hoped they could help me with some of the questions I encountered later on the wage claim stage. Instead of helping me out, the lawyer I spoke to Casey kept saying "Unfortunately I am not representing you so I can't help you." is like three times and was quite frustrated with his response. While I understood him, I felt it was a bit unfair to have my case closed like this, without ever giving me an opportunity to have proper answers on my case later on. Had Casey and other staff been more helpful to me, I would really have gratitude toward them. Yet their constant rejection to my request for further help has made me give 3-Star at best.
