Seeds to Sew International - Fair Trade gifts from Kenya

    Seeds to Sew International

I saw a flier for Seeds to Sew International advertising a Mata Traders pop up when I was walking…read morearound Hopewell last week. It just so happens that I had heard of Mata Traders and was interested in the fair trade ethics of the company as well as their great dresses and skirts (love me some dresses and skirts with pockets). I stopped into Seeds to Sew International today and am so happy I did! As of April they have a storefront on Seminary Ave (they had been in the back of the store before, which isn't great for foot traffic). I talked to Nina, the Operations Manager, for a bit about the organization and the work they do in Kenya. Seeds to Sew International teaches participants to sew reusable gift bags- so much better than throwing out wrapping paper each holiday- and builds upon those skills so that eventually they are making items like wrap skirts. They also have a beading program and a crafting program, which both use the money earned to pay for girls' education in rural Kenya. I love that I was able to walk away with an item I loved (a skirt with pockets from the Mata Traders pop up) and feel good about where my money went. How often do the products we buy better the world around us? This is a great model that I wish more places would follow. The best part? They'll be having a new pop up each month! Best of luck- I can't wait to see what you do next!

Seamstresses in our sewing program create unique gift wrapping bags, shopping bags, aprons and other items and are paid for their work up front. All net proceeds from sale of Kenyan crafts and fundraising items created by our volunteers pay for school fees of girls in rural Kenya and are reinvested back in our programs.
