We've been trying to come to Bet's for about three years, but every time we try, they've sold out of fish and had to close early. This time, we made it! The fish was amazing. I do, however, have two complaints that keep it from getting five stars: first, there was a sign which read, "No French fries today, too hot." I've worked in kitchen. Yes, it gets hot, having to constantly drop fry baskets. But it was barely 80 degrees outside. It was really disappointing to set out for "fish and chips" and discover that there are no chips. Second, there was no price adjustment given for half of the menu being unavailable. A "small fish and chips" (being a 1/2 pound of fish and a side of fries), is the exact same price ($12) as a "small fish in a dish", which is just a 1/2 pound of fish. logically, there should be some sort of difference in price. But, the food was fantastic, the ladies were friendly, and the long line moved very quickly. Hopefully next time they will feel like cooking fries!

This is a must stop I was first in line for opening up at 11:00 great price huge portion, I had to take some of the haddock off of my sandwich just to get it in my mouth do not skip this gem you will not be disappointed!

If you are staying in Boothbay Harbor this place is an absolute must! Worth any line or long travel. The Haddock was incredibly fresh and flaky. Just the right amount of batter. Nice crispy crust. Perfectly tasty fries. Comes with tartar and dill sauce. I am a malt vinegar fan and they put it in spray bottles which makes it easy to coat your fish. Picnic area is nice and clean and offers both sun and shade. If you are anywhere near this place you have to have it. Bet's simply is the best!

Best fish and chips ever- whole order was $18 but it was the Wednesday of windjammer festival. Whole order comes with two huge fillets- lightly breaded haddock! Plus a bowl of shoestring fries. Was fun to eat here at picnic tables. Shared two orders between the 4 of us.

Maine is known for lobster rolls, but it should be known for Bet's fish fry. Everything about my fish and fries was absolutely amazing and I'm just devastated we found it just a few days before they close for the season. Can not wait to eat again.

Tremendous amounts as others have noted. Both fish and fries....BUT, they don't change their oil for weeks or months. Only strain it...health hazard? Also, they fry the fish in the am and then re-fry when ordered...so cooked twice. I would not return and since they are closed for the winter you are safe also. Both my wife and I experienced some "GI distress" within hours. From conversations w/ other owners not unique. read more

This is the best fried fish I've ever eaten. It tastes the same as it did when Bet serves out of a small trailer. You can tell its fresh and it's cooked in front of you so it's hot and crispy. Fries are good too. A half order was a challenge to finish, but I couldn't bear to leave any behind. read more

Regular visitors to BBH past 10 years - can't believe I've never tried this place. Easily one of the freshest, most delicious fried fish I've ever had. Seasoned perfectly, massive portions (either they operate on thin margins, have a friend who's a fishmonger nearby, or catch their own haddock), you will not leave hungry. Full and 1/2 orders of fish and chips available - the full is enough for 2, though glutton that I am, I et it all! Btw, they ONLY do fish fry - sandwich, with chips (mix of fried and potato chips, both homemade), or by itself. Genius way to control quality and costs. Fairly priced at $18 for full order too. Limited hours, they often run out on busy weekends. This place obviously one of the few spots real locals will patronize. Best meal of the vacation, which included most area restaurants like Mine Oyster, McSeagull, Tugboat Inn, lobster dock, and a few roadside lobster roll places. Nobody does what these guys do, which sets them apart. If you're reading reviews and are undecided, don't overthink it - go here ! Will make this a repeat stop for all future trips to the region. Out of this WORLD. We stopped here while on vacation for a quick lunch after having driven by it everyday of our trip. The absolute best fried fish I have had. We got a whole order of fries and a whole sandwich. This was enough food to feed 3 people at least. if there is two of you, get a half order. I felt guilty throwing such wonderful food away. Next time (oh please God let there be a next time) I would just get a half order of the fish and chips...we didn't really need the bread. The fish was fresh, flaky, delicious...and the batter it was fried in was light and delish! This is as good as "fast food" gets! If you go by...you MUST stop. Worth every penny! read more

Stumbled upon this place and was drawn in by the 5 star rating and the cute look. It didn't disappoint. Fish is SUPER fresh, the breading light, crispy and flavorful. The shoestring fries are fried to order and are delicious. This is what I come to Maine for. Can't get anything like this back in NYC!! Make sure you check it out. Pleasant staff offer up a superb fish sandwich, tasty chips at this lively decorated take out stand on the Boothbay entrance area common. Huge portion of fish of fish cooked just right on a nice roll. Clean picnic tables off the road and vending machines for drinks. EXCELLENT! read more

Made a return trip to Bet's last week and was not disappointed. I recommend you watch an order come out before ordering your own. A full order of fish and chips is two large filets with an enormous bowl of fries, more than enough for two adults. Order fish in a dish and a small order of fries. Regardless, you will not be disappointed. read more

Without doubt the best 'fish and chips' in the whole of Boothbay (& I'm from England so trust me I know my fish and chips!). Freshly caught that morning Bet's fish is not only delectable but the portion sizes are HUGE. You May think they are a tad expensive until you receive your serving and realize it is big enough for 2 or 3 people. Added to the scrumptious fish Bet herself is wonderfully entertaining. Regardless of whether you are a local or 'from away' Bet greets you as if you were a long lost friend and, while your very fresh fish is cooking before your eyes, keeps you entertained with dialog about local news and events. Definitely an experience not to be missed. read more

Stopped here on our way back from Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Definitely the best fish and chips I have ever had. The portions were huge and we even had leftovers. The haddock was very fresh and the dill and tarter sauces on the side were delicious. Very friendly staff too! We will definitely be back next time we are in the area. read more

I love bets so much! It's cheap, tasty, and has a great outdoor atmosphere! The only hard part is getting there before they run out of fish! Once they run out they are closed for the day. Five stars. Thanks for a wonderful lunch bets! read more

Incredible. Fast and fresh. The dill sauce is not to be missed and I liked it even better than the tartar. Portions are huge and I could not even come close to finishing my 1/2 order of fish and chips. Very limited offerings on the menu but that is fine by me, they do fish and they do it well! read more

5 stars does not do justice but that is max on here. Wife & l split a full portion and that was a lot. Super moist & tender. Bread crumbs instead of batter also made it extra light. Most tender tastiest fish we ever had. Only problem was out of her control. They are doing rd const in front of her place but that will be over soon. Hope we find time to stop there again b4 we leave. read more

Wow...made a trek an hour north of home to get this off my bucket list...braving the inevitable traffic jam through the Wiscasset Reds Eats gridlock (note to those in 60 minute line at Reds..just go buy a twin lobster dinner somewhere that will be just as good for less money...you are essentially waiting all afternoon for a bun here....A BUN!) ...but I digress.....Bets is amazing! Utterly fresh...lightly, but flavorably, battered...and freakin YUGE......got the half sanwhich, and could only finish half of that..but it was delicious....spectacular!!! This place is so great we went twice in one week. The portions are RIDICULOUSLY big - a half sandwich can feed two very hungry adults. Fish is very lightly breaded and fried to perfection. Try both the tartar sauce and the dill mayo that they offer. Not sure I have ever tasted such fresh fish! read more

Stopped here totally on a whim, and had the best meal of our vacation. Flaky fresh fish, crispy frying, outstanding fries, and multiple dipping sauces. Easily the best fish & chips we have ever had. Portions were large--a half order of the fish and chips was a good amount for my wife and I. The owners / staff were friendly, and we got our food quickly--they were very efficient. The most delicious fish and chips on the planet !! and the service is amazing. The whole experience is absolutely memorable and will leave you wanting more! I have to laugh at the jerk Ken B from CA below. Guys like Ken have changed the region for sure, which is too bad. Too many snot-nosed and uptight people visiting. Mild,hot,fresh fish. Ordered a half in a dish for $8. Best fish I have had..nice change from lobster. Hole in the wall local place...it is not fancy so if you want filet of something with capers....this is not the place for you...BUT if you want great fish...give Bet's a try!! read more

~~~ they offer a Large order of Fish in a paper Bowl ... which is great for the creasy results that you see after you're done . the service was ok , but , the location was awful and very Dangerous .. as , it is loud and located in the center of a 4-point intersection .... ( Time Square would be much quiet ) ... the fish is all made the same ... (no chief in this shack ) . .. However , nice spot to Eat and enjoy the outdoors of Boothbay , Maine ...
