A heartfelt thank you to the Garner WakeMed Emergency Staff, Dr. Bleyer, RN Emily and other RN's…read moreand specialist on duty On Friday morning July 28, 2023. I retired from the NC State Highway Patrol after 30 years and I was always the one giving assistance to persons in need and not accustomed to being the needy one. On Friday morning I awoke early to begin my yard work in an effort to avoid the heat of the day. While trimming bushes I was stung by a yellow jacket bee. I didn't think much about it as I have been stung many times in my life and after the initial pain, all is well after the swelling subsides. I completed my yard work after approximately 1 hour and started towards the house. I became weak, labored breathing and broke out in hives. I got in the house I tried to drink some water and after each drink I had severe indigestion and my lips and mouth became numb. My wife drove me to WakeMed Emergency in Garner, NC. When I arrived at the ER, I was third in line to register and I explained to the registrar I had suffered a bee sting and was going to sit down as I was feeling faint and unsteady. Another registrar heard my conversation and immediately took my information. I proceeded to the waiting area and had just sat down when a male RN called my name and as I walking into the ER room he asked me to remove my face mask and immediately recognized I was experiencing an anaphylactic event. Within a minute the male RN had administered an EPYPEN injection to my upper thigh and another RN began an IV administering anti inflammatory and allergy medications. Another RN began heart, blood pressure and pulse monitoring and Dr. Bleyer was by my side checking my vitals and examined and questioning me. After 5 hours of monitored care I was released. There is no doubt that these gifted professionals from the registrar to nurses and Dr. Bleyer who understood the severity of anaphylactic shock and the importance of medical triage saved my life. I am deeply indebted to each of you who helped and looked after me. The compassion and standard of care I received is truly second to none. Each of you are appreciated and prayers of thanksgiving are lifted for each of you. Again a sincere thank you as I have more time to spend with my family and my new 12 day old grandson born at Wake Med Raleigh. Wake Med is #1 in my book and we as Garner residents are so fortunate to have a first class Wake Med Emergency facility. May God bless Wake Med.

While waiting in the lobby I called a loved one and she was praying for my daughter and I. The triage nurse calls my daughters name. We walk into the triage room. I'm standing there quiet, phone to my ear and the nurse tells my day to be weighed. She looks at me...and rudely says I can't be on my phone. I shake my head ok. We immediately sit in the chairs next to her desk. I hang up my call. Look at the nurse and say, it's been a lot today..can you just be kind, have compassion...my daughter passed out...I have surgery in less then 24 hrs. Tears are welling up. She says to me. Are you talking about me. I say yes. Please just be kind. She then says to me get out. Get up and get out. Demands I leave. Calls the security in to have me removed!!!! I ask to speak to a mgr...no one says a thing. Security tells me I got to go. Then tells me I can't be in there with my daughter to which I immediately tell him he is wrong. My daughter is under age. I then ask for a mgr. He goes to get one but another nurse calls my daughter. I speak to a mgr when things calm. She basically tells me the nurse was asking me to wait outside so someone else could help me.....not cool. I will be filing multiple complaints to make sure Lisa the triage nurse understands how NOT to act when people are in need. Not ok. I honestly don't know if I will be back. I'll more than likely drive far for better care. 100% believe it was fueled by racism!!!

Knowing the complexity of my many chronic health conditions and my long medication list, it would be important to me and the staff if I bring my detailed medication list, so I emphasized, many times to make sure my property arrives to my room with me, yet, it was lost for 24 hours hours. During that time, after a complex spinal surgery, I wasn't given my correct medications, or the correct doses at the correct times, which happens frequently when I'm hospitalized, not only at Rex. Once it was found, after I complained to Patients Relations, the head of security came, but for reasons I still don't know. He did a good job explaining how the security process was supposed to work, but he didn't explain how my property got missing. especially, after me emphasizing it's importance to my hospital stay. It was as if he couldn't realize the procedure wasn't relevant. What's relevant is what actually happened and why. His explanation was the most incompetent, unprofessional, and unethical explanation imaginable. His staff members were sleep so he, evidently, didn't think that losing my property was worth waking up his staff members, who knew the details of what happened. As if that wasn't demoralizing enough, he then told me to file a complaint while walking out. Mostafa Foluke'.

The facility's size promotes a very personalized experience and enables you to feel comfortable and the staff is so pleasant from the receptionist at check-in until you're exiting the building with a prepared container of chicken soup:) I've always felt absolutely confident and assured that I'd received exemplary and professional care, you never feel like a number, there's such a warm feeling there! Firstly, thank you to Karma Williams, my amazing PA with Johnston Pain Management on Huff Street, she's an absolute Godsend in my life, she doesn't stop until she deciphers what's going on and then takes every opportunity to help you heal and go forward! Dr. Gary Wertman was dreamy as a surgeon, his personality is so humble and kind, you feel so comforted and confident in his hands (literally)! To my lovely RNs, Ashley at Pre-Op and Christina at Post-Op., I was so soothed by your calming and kindhearted manners, I never felt alone or unheard. Thank you for detecting how uncomfortable I can become after being in awkward positions for any length of time. You're truly gifted and giving. Jeremy, the CRNA, thank you for sending me off to the moon! I don't remember anything but a blissful nap. I appreciate the nerve block that worked exactly as you explained and prevented me from feeling any severe pain! My only suggestion is to include a notecard with everyone's name at discharge in order for those special and professional caregivers to receive a note of gratitude from the ones that they've cared for so well during their procedure! God bless all of you! Respectfully submitted, Sharon Smith
