I brought a 1970s Don Pettit for Knoll chair to Better Tex for full reupholstery and wood refinishing. What I expected was careful restoration of a vintage design piece; what I received was a drawn-out, careless job that ultimately caused more harm than repair. The project took nearly four months to complete, which was already significantly longer than initially communicated. While delays can be understandable with restoration work, the final result did not justify the wait. The workmanship was sloppy, inconsistent, and unprofessional. The wood refinishing in particular was poorly executed, with visible damage and a lack of care in preserving the integrity of the original frame. The upholstery work also suffered in the process--an otherwise intact existing condition was compromised, leaving me with new issues that did not exist when the chair was dropped off. Most concerning, even internal communication from their own team raised doubts about the work. I was told by a showroom assistant that their wood shop had advised them to "never send a job like this to them again," which reflects poorly on their internal quality control and coordination. I paid over $1,000 for this restoration expecting skilled craftsmanship appropriate for a vintage Knoll piece. Instead, I was returned a damaged chair, degraded original materials, and a new set of problems that now require additional repair elsewhere. Based on this experience, I would not recommend Better Tex for upholstery or refinishing work, particularly on vintage or high-value furniture. read more

I am very happy I decided to re-upholster my furniture instead of buy a new set. We had a couch and two armchairs bought a little over 10 years ago. They were well-used and the fabric was worn out. The pieces were built solid but the fabric was the issue. I called up Better Tex and Albert encouraged me to come down to their showroom. This was after I had gotten 2 expensive quotes. I'm glad I went down to see them. They have hundreds of different fabrics and both Albert and the other gentleman made great suggestions (based on wall color, flooring, lighting, etc). I decided on a cream fabric. They also quoted me the lowest price (lower by approx $1,000) The movers came a few days later and were very professional. I was worried they would have difficulty getting the couch through the tight entryway, but they clearly knew what they were doing. A couple weeks later, the couch and armchair were ready and we arranged the delivery. The two pieces were delivered on time and without any issue. I was so thrilled with how the great couch and armchair looked, I immediately emailed Albert to give me a quote for our second armchair and adjoining ottoman using the same cream fabric. Same seamless pick up and delivery with the second order. I am very thrilled with their excellent workmanship, service, and quality. In short, if you have a piece that could use some freshening up, I strongly recommend Bettertex. This business came to install the very expensive Hunter Douglas blinds I purchased through them. Showed up without proper tools, ( hammering w/ a wrench ) nothing to cover my property and nothing to clean the absolute mess they made of my apt. ( asking ME for a paper towel ?? to clean construction level dust after drilling a couple of dozen holes into the plaster/concrete window area !!!! ) Standing on my furniture to reach window. The worst company I ever dealt with. I have used them for one of my high end city renovations project and dealing with them was the worse nightmare ever. Bettertex was to do a leather upholstery on sofa seat, back cushion, and two ottomans. They missed the deadline by three weeks. Once the product was delivered it was of a inferior quality as far as the craftsmanship goes. Bettertex had to remove the above mentioned items and have it done right. After another six weeks of wasting my time calling them about the delivery, going there personally to check the quality of the work , they were paid for and numerous excuses on their side, they never got it right. I will never ever use them again. Rating of Bettertex does not fall into categories listed. However, Yelp would not allow me to post the review without the rating so I had to give them one star. We just finished a project with Bettertex and we are beyond pleased. They made three sets of top down/bottom up Roman Shades and curtains to match. They also made a beautiful custom daybed to go in a bay seating area. The fabric, the quality of the work, and their willingness to make everything perfect was beyond anything I could have imagined. We live in a brownstone, so the walls aren't perfectly straight and things are a little off. For some people, this is frustrating. I just finished renovating my apartment and Bettertex was hands down the worst vendor among the 20+ I dealt with during the process. I gave them existing shades and asked that the fabric be replaced, but the mechanism and style be kept the same. Not only were they over 5 weeks late, but they also needed to be chased after constantly and gave multiple false delivery dates before I finally got the product. When I did receive them, the shades were done incorrectly and when I brought this up with Albert, he was defensive ("this is how it's always done") about his work even though we had explicitly discussed and agreed upon something different. He refused to entertain my request to remedy the situation until I contested the charge with my credit card company. I incurred considerable extra expense to remove the shades and have them corrected by Bettertex, only to find that they were still incorrect the second time around. I now have shades that are bowing under the weight of the fabric because they substituted poor materials instead of using the existing ones I provided them. Despite requesting for my materials back from them, I've been met only with silence. Horrible experience, take your business elsewhere. read more
