Tried the Diner a couple of times. The prices are good and the portions are decent. The food is cooked well but disappointingly bland. I ordered country fried steak and eggs with home fries. The gravy for the steak was bland and there was next to none of it. The eggs were perfectly cooked but they couldn't be bothered with salt. The home fries are basically large cut pieces of an unpield potato. No flavor just a boiled cut up potatoe. I also ordered a BLT. The sandwich tasted good but it was very small with at best 2 pieces of floppy unevenly cooked bacon, 2 small pieces of tomato, and the usual foolish amount of lettuce to fill an empty sandwich. I think the food is decent but lazy. read more

Swore I would never go back to this place but it's been 4 years and we wanted to stay sort of local. Now for some reason the place is open 24/7, giving that a try. Not sure how well that will go. Also previously they took credit cards I believe and now it's only cash. How many use cash today. I ordered eggs over easy with bacon, not as big of a dish as previously but still good. There was some sort of mishap in the kitchen and the homefries were extra spicy but I like spicy but my companion does not so good hardly eat his cornbeef hash since that was made with those spicy homefries. In a pinch may go here again. I'm sure the 24/7 hours probably won't remain so won't update that here. read more

I hadn't been here in so long I had forgotten about the huge portions. I ordered the homemade hash with eggs over medium, home fries and rye toast. The eggs were perfect. I wasn't crazy about the hash. I think I'm just used to canned hash. It was too chunky for me but cooked well. The home fries were really good and plentiful. My toast could've been a darker, barely toasted but still a little crispy. All in all, good for breakfast, good fast service and light atmosphere. Next time I'll have to try the French toast. Betty's has changed, but not for the better. They aren't serving dinner anymore, their online menu is nothing like what they have in the diner, and the space was overly warm (no AC) and a bit shabby. I had a Chef's Salad (listed at least three times on the menu) - lettuce, pale tomatoes, a nice amount of roast beef and swiss, chopped ham, a few sliced shrooms, red pepper, two large strawberries - a bit strange and not really worth the $9.95. FF's meatball and pasta was tasty - soft meat/tender, and a delicious red sauce. Red went easy with two poached eggs, done perfectly. This small breakfast spot in Albany is really a hidden gem. My daughter Isabella is an avid Betty Boop fan and had been asking to take the ride up from Boston for two months after seeing them on You Tube. It was worth the trek! We had 13 people in our party that took 3 tables near each other. We were the only ones in the diner at 7:30 on a Sunday morning which should tell you something. The waiter doesn't appear to have any service industry experience at all as he got virtually everything wrong from drinks to meals. He was just bringing out random food and putting it in front of people. Almost all were wrong. Not 1 person in the group got their meal 100% correct. There were roaches in the dining room, the food was very poor quality and as I stated, by far the worst service ever. Great little gem of a breakfast spot! A bit deceiving from the outside, the inside is bright and cheerful. The owner, "Betty Boop's" twin sister is the owner, cook, and waitress. Her breakfasts are delicious and homemade and very reasonably priced. Yesterday, I had the eggs and home fries, and today I had the french toast. The french toast was the best I have ever had with melt in your mouth deliciousness. I am only visiting for the weekend but If I lived here I would be a regular.....p.s. her unlimited coffee is also very good!. What started as a great breakfast took a very sharp detour. The restaurant is a cozy place, but we were seated immediately. Even though we've never been here before, DeAnna finds people she knows and walks over to say hello. Between greeting the people she knows, the 50s style, and the coziness, DeAnna is comparing the place to a restaurant her parents owned 30 years ago. Instant nostalgia for her... even thought we've never been here before. I decided to order something I've never had before. I went with the first thing on the menu, country fried steak. I don't know why, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. The plate was pretty good. The steak was a nice sized helping, covered in a light gravy with mushrooms and a hint of maple sweetness. There was a generous serving of home fries, grill cooked (no peppers). And to finish the plate. a smattering of fresh fruit, including blueberries, a strawberry, and a piece of orange. DeAnna ordered a make your own omelet - adding mushrooms, feta cheese and tomatoes. She loved it. And then I saw something that turned my stomach. As a table was being cleared, the waitress brought a handful of silverware and put it on the table, leaving two place settings that were unused by the party at the table previously. All of this was sitting on the table exposed as she squirted Windex over the glass top table and wiped it down, moving the silverware into and out of areas that were just sprayed. Instantly, everything in my mouth suddenly felt like it was covered in Windex. I put my fork down and would not pick it up again for the remainder of our time there. I then saw the same woman do the same thing to a second table and told DeAnna it was time to leave. It is a shame, the meal was great and DeAnna was loving the restaurant. Bettie's is a good local diner. Its location is very convenient. Food is good and bad. I figured it out. If you order a meal and it's cook by the elder guy that owns the place. Then you should have a great meal. Problem is, It's a family business and when mom and pops are out the diner its ran by the sons. If you had a bad meal most likely it was the sons who prepared it. When I go there now I immediately look at the cooks. If it's the elders I'll order. If it's the sons, I grab a to go menu to make it look good read more
