I've been trying to get around to the smash burger joints in the Albany area and Herbie's is definitely one of my faves so far! I liked the toppings of the double cheeseburger and it was yummy without being too soggy! I thought their fries were good and crispy too. I've heard good things about their shakes and opted to try the vegan version with tahini/oat milk base since I was curious and it was so good!! Loved pairing it with the fries too. went here around 10ish for a late night bite &' i swear to God i walked into the live-action version of Dawn of the Dead. nothing looked like the pictures. cashier spent a solid 3 minutes asking how to spell my name like dude , just put down "kirk" let's keep it moving. burger was as dry as hell, cheese wasn't melted &' the tomato still had the stem on it like they ripped it straight off the plant and called it farm to table. cashier looked like he rolled out of bed mid shift wearing a white tank top like he got called in from a backyard barbecue. whole place smelled like cat piss, weed &' parsley. This joint is one of the few places that knows how to cook a proper well done burger. It stays juicy and flavorful. The double burger is the perfect burger to bun etc ratio. Herbies a cute little space, it gives retro vibes. I've visited this spot twice and it has such a welcoming and fun vibe to it. I love the bold yellow and pink colors as it adds a retro aesthetic. The single cheeseburger was absolutely juicy and amazing. The pickles added a great refreshing touch. Stopped by Herbie because i was in the area and was hungry. They have Double and single cheeseburgers and double and single vegan burgers. They also have fries that can be loaded with cheese sauce, "needy sauce" and caramelized onions. To drink They have both regular and vegan vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry shakes. I only got a cheeseburger this order. It was a simple smashed burger with their signature sauce, lettuce, and tomato. The ordering process was very quick because the place was fairly empty. I maybe waited 5 minutes. The staff was quick and efficient. I ate my burger away from the store. It was alright. It was a little mushy and the flavor wasn't heavy. I wish there was more of a seasoned burger flavor but that wasn't the case. I dont live nearby so I probably won't get to it again to give it another try but hopefully others enjoy it. read more

I kept hearing about how herbies burgers were really good. I finally had a chance to check them out on my lunch break. I was surprised to go in and see no line. The seating area is small but clean, and there is no bathroom available for customers. Some nice 80s throwbacks were playing the entire time I was there. The cashier was very friendly. When I asked about a side of bbq sauce she mentioned that they are strict on not providing sauce as sides, but she asked the person in the kitchen for me anyway and was able to give me some. We ate in, and the cashier delivered to our table. The cheese burger patties are smash burgers so they are thin. I got a double cheese burger with all the fixing and added caramelized onions. I shared a large fry with my husband. Surprisingly, this was filling enough to make me feel satisfied but not so full that I would fall asleep back at work. It was just right. Their nerdy sauce is delicious and the combination of that with the pickles and onions on the burger were so good. It wasn't greasy or falling apart in the paper wrap. Strolling northbound on Lark St an inviting aroma lingered from a corner restaurant: the sincere smell of seared beef; an often familiar smell on warm summer days. I headed into Herbie's Burgers to be greeted by a retro vibe of wall posters and seating. Recognizing that it was a smash burger establishment I ordered the double cheeseburger, a customary practice. The double cheeseburger comes with the works: lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and Herbie sauce- but I felt the need to experience the flavors of the patties, since they were locally sourced and grass-fed so I forwent the L and T, though I did want the acidity of the P and the enthusiast in me supports O as a part of the "quintessential cheese burger." I was floored by the flavor!! Initially I just wanted to try a bite and enjoy the rest at home, but I just had to have another bite- and another- and then eventually just finished the whole scrumptious burger. Brilliant flavor, with a seasoned sear from the griddle, perfectly melted cheese, and the P and O were appropriate accoutrements as opposed to commanding a presence in the burger. Food is solid enough, a little on the pricey side. I visited the Herbie's in Empire State Plaza. Service was just bad and I'm pretty sure its the franchise and not the employees. Its obvious they are understaffed. I had to wait at an empty register while the cashier ran back and forth handing out meals. Waited 6 mins before she took my order. I then had to wait another 16 mins for my Nerdy Bird and fries. .My lunch shift is only 30 mins. Granted the employees showed zero urgency, that just tells me they arent given proper management. I got the double burger and it was fantastic. I came hungry and the burger I got was all business. It came in a simple bag and a simple wrap. No nonsense. Located in downtown Albany, Herbie's Burgers is a In-N-Out copycat, but not nearly as good. To start out, I ordered a cheeseburger and loaded fries. As soon as I received my food, I was shocked to see how small the burger was for the price. The burger cost $6 and the burger was the size of a slider. Anyways, I immediately dug into the burger and it was middling. To clear up, the flavor of the meat was enjoyable, but the patty was way too thin and a bit overcooked. In addition, the burger was so thin that I had take off the lettuce and pickles because I couldn't even taste the meat. I enjoy smash style burgers, but these burgers were just too thin. However, the nerdy sauce was flavorful and made the burger better. It was very similar to In-N-Out's sauce. Likewise, the potato style bun was favorable and worked well with the nerdy sauce. The burger was fine, but $6 is outrageous for something so small. Following that, I tried the loaded fries which were an exact copy of In-N-Out's animal style fries. The fries were pretty good, but definitely should not have cost $7. In any case, the fries were crispy, thin, and salted well. Additionally, the grilled onions and nerdy sauce made the fries taste a lot better and added a lot of flavor. Despite that, the cheese on the fries was not melted and I did not like that at all. Nobody wants cold slices of cheese on their fries. In essence, Herbie's Burgers is the closest thing to In-N-Out in Albany, but it's not as good and overpriced. read more

BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front): Herbie's Burgers on Lark street is the closest thing to having a local "In-N-Out Burgers" style burger bar in downtown Albany offering menus for both meat eaters and vegans. We arrived on Saturday evening to a busy burger counter. Singles, doubles, fries, and milkshakes are offered in regular or vegan style. A sign on the wall warns that smash burgers are pressed thin so you may water to order a double to get a full sized burger feel. Fully loaded fries are offered in small or large sized and can be served plain or topped with cheese, onions, and nerdy sauce (kinda like animal style). Nerdy sauce seems like a Thousand Island style sauce and comes on the burgers with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles when you order a burger with everything. There were dozens of takeout or GrubHub orders going out the door which seemed to make a frenzy of activity back in the kitchen and prep area. The online ordering shows items what I would compare to In-N-Out's secret menu with addition items not displayed as normal offerings. The wait staff was very friendly. We dined in, ordering 1 vegan single with everything, 1 vegan double with everything, a large fries, and diet soft drink. The food was reasonably priced and arrived hot. We enjoyed the fresh cut shoestring style fries, while the burgers were good they were noticeably over cooked, slightly burnt in fact but we could see they were very busy and we were so hungry we didn't complain. We definitely want to go back to try a shake which are available in dairy or non-dairy vegan flavors (Vanilla, Chocolate, Strawberry, and Banana). Hopefully next time it won't be so busy or we'll ask for our burgers to be lightly cooked. Despite the burger patties being overdone, we have to problem giving Herbie's a 4 out of 5! read more

There is seating for a few folks but I am guessing it is primarily a grab and go operation. They are open until 2am so I am guessing there is a mob of people during weekend bar hopping hours. I found the fries to be outstanding. Crispy and flavorful with the perfect amount of salt. They are natural cut and cooked the right way. I had a vanilla shake that was just fine. It wasn't a game changer by any means but I still enjoyed it. The burgers at Herbies are done in the smash burger style. They made sure to mention their double is like a traditional single because the patties are thin. There are so many burger places to choose from locally but I declare that this fine establishment should move to the top of your list. The burger contained two thin patties cooked perfectly, a grilled potato bun, L.T.O. and some very tasty pickles. It also came with a secret sauce which tied everything together. I was very excited when the Herbie's on Lark Street opened because as a native Californian, I have a nostalgia for In n' Out that has never been fulfilled by any burger place outside of California. This changed when Herbie's opened, they clearly copied In n Out down to the yellow writing and fonts on their menu. The burgers and nerdy sauce are very similar to In n Out. The shakes are similar. They don't quite emulate the fries. However, for being a burger place that is not In n Out, they get pretty close. I have been a huge supporter of Herbie's since they opened, telling friends to try it. However, I think I need a break from the Herbie location on lark Street, because of the combination of being overpriced, and then not having a pleasant dining experience. I admit that I am OK paying eight dollars for a milkshake and four dollars for fries and seven dollars for a burger, recognizing that this is wildly overpriced. However, it is somewhat insulting to pay $22 for my meal and just want to eat my burger and drink my milkshake in peace, only to see multiple homeless people come into this location and then be given free water. The homeless people then sit in this location and gather, and then proceed to ask paying customers for money. The employees of Herbie's don't try to dissuade disruptive behavior, and go along with it, almost encouraging Herbie's to become this safe haven for the homeless of Lark. Even though Herbie has tried so hard to copy in and out and be a West Coast style of burger, In-N-Out is very wholesome. Herbie's on Lake really misses the mark on this aspect. read more
