I've shopped here for years for annuals and perennials and found their prices reasonable and their selection adequate. This year, for the first time we hired Betty's to design and plant landscaping in our front yard. They planted three trees and several grasses and small shrubs. One of the trees died w/in weeks due to what they diagnosed as transplant shock back in June. They recommended we wait until cooler weather to provide a replacement tree, however not that they finally agreed to do the replacement work, they no longer have the type of tree that we paid for. We have to select a new tree, and that tree will no longer be covered under warranty. I am so unimpressed with their service. Shop here for your own planting, but don't rely on them to back up what they've planted for you. read more

I stopped by here a few months ago to buy rooting compound. The employee that was there who was helpful sold me nutrients to mix with water after the rooting was complete, which was the wrong product, im ok with that mistakes happen. But when I walked over to the register and asked if they were sure this product was rooting compound they got a attitude with me. They were probably annoyed that I was trying to clone my own plants instead of buyin they over-priced plants. They were sellin a pot of winter-gem boxwood for $120... you can get this same plant at walmart for $40 and at a set of 15 live plants on Amazon for $76. RIP OFF. read more

Hey, if you are looking to get some landscaping done, may I suggest that you avoid Betty's Azalea Ranch of Fairfax, VA. Their contractors do not follow instructions, and they do not honor their warranty. My mother paid these clowns to put plants in her front yard. I can say for a fact that the contractors did not follow the plan provided by the designer. I can also tell you that they are ghosting us. Three of the plants died shortly after being planted and were supposed to be replaced under warranty. It's been a month and a half and not only have they not been replaced, it's actually been a month since we last heard from them. read more

We showed up at 5 and they were closing the gates so we couldn't enter when the close at FIVE. We've been they're a few times before and they were ok I guess but it was seriously inconvenient when we drove all the way out there for them to just close the gates a half hour before hand. I bought 20LB of Greenview Fairway formula sun and shade from Betty's along with 24 bags of top soil and a pennfine product that you spread on time to retain the moisture, about a $100 for the seed. I spread the seed by the direction placed top soil over the seeded area raked it very well and spread the pennfine on top and watered every-night as they recommended at 7 pm. The grass came in about 10 to 15 days, beautiful, then it all died. I went back and looked at the bag and its 35% rye grass. Poor product, why would a reputable nursery sell such crap. I'm not too sure why the reviews are so low, well obviously I read them, that it was mostly due to poor customer support. I will say on my visit that I did not encounter any negativity or anything that's in the comments below. The quality of the flowers and plants were very healthy on my visit and the prices of the flowers were too good, i could not pass them up! Anything i grow or bring home grows, so perhaps because the previous reviews were during the winter season, the variety must've been limited and or the indoor plants weren't great? Not sure? All my veggies and flowers I bought nearly 3 years ago are still doing well. read more

EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE early last spring I wandered around Betty's azalea farm trying to plan my vegetable garden. They were very supportive and gave me excellent advice on soil, plants etc. and this summer I had the best garden I've ever had! The plants and flowers I bought were excellent quality and Betty's provided more advice and support by phone. WOW! Prices are reasonable and service unbeatable!! HORRIBLE STAFF WORKING THE REGISTERS! If you read the reviews - you'll notice the same pattern of horrible costumer service. I've been there twice, and both times I've had bad customer service from the older ladies that worked the main register. I see bad reviews for customer service, and it can be spotty, but it's only because we're spoiled by that other place. Betty's has competitive prices--especially on pottery and statuary. The reason I have stopped going there is because they kept us locked outside for an unreasonable length of time after the rest of the retail world had reopened their doors. Every time I go there for supplies, I always get a feeling i'm inconveniencing them. Some of the employees are very helpful, some are just very dismissive. Stay away from the main entrance, and ask for your needs on side entrance where they sell seeds. The gentleman there is SUPER helpful and will share their knowledge with you. When I first visited I was so excited. This garden center is huge. They have lots of varieties to choose from and decent enough prices. My first visit I spent about $100. My second, another $100. Today I went to buy a ton of soil. I purchased the bags at the front of the store and then went to pick them up. They were sold out. I was disappointed, but hopeful that since they had sold me a product that was out of stock that they would offer an equal exchange. They have some younger employees working there- and I don't think it's their fault, but they don't seem that well versed in navigating customer service. Instead of any exchange I was offered a refund and when I inquired about an equal exchange, I said- so I can't get the equivalent of 13 small bags? To which she replied "if you wanna pay 8.88". Now, I can understand- sure maybe the business pays more for these bags. But that's not on me. You could simply explain that to me, which would be reasonable. Instead I'm brushed off. I've worked in retail, I've worked in sales, I've worked in food service. So- I'm definitely one to be understanding and give the benefit of the doubt. But this is no way to treat your customers. So sure, as a business you might lose out on $50 that day by giving me a discount- but my lifetime value as a customer- especially one who would have referred is more than $50. Just really sad that this establishment doesn't understand that value. **Again- not saying that I'm entitled to a discount, because I can understand when that's not possible, but trying to keep a sale should obviously be a goal- even substituting a different product!!!** read more

Been a customer for 30 years. Always over priced but I went anyway. Had them do a landscaping job in 2023, spent 5K+. One year later some of the perennials didn't survive and I wanted a store credit so I could replant. They said no. Gave me a line "it was a hot spring last year and you didn't water your plants." Huh. Funny, all the other perennials survived. Maybe your crew didn't plant them correctly? So management cheaps out on a $200 credit. I call BS. You've lost a long time customer. read more

Service was poor. I was looking for help with grass seed, and the staff would answer a few questions, then walk away and help other customers. This happened several times, and I eventually walked out. They apparently didn't want my business, so I went down the street to Merrifield Garden Center, and the lady there was more than willing to help. I have been going to Betty's since 1996. Steve the owner, is friendly, informative and provides the last true instrument to obtain a straight forward approach to your landscaping needs. He also has a radio show on WMAL each Sunday morning that provides a direct and informative platform for what you truly need to know about plants, trees, lawn and landscaping needs. I use to use SuperLawn for about two years; the results struggled at best on a good day. When I asked Steve about fungus, fertilizer and results he recommended Turf Trust® Lawn Maintenance Fertilizer 24-0-12 along with a detailed handout to meet my lawn needs. My yard this summer, even though it has been a tough year has never looked better than when I moved in in 1996. His prices are competitive and no one gives better advice. I highly recommend Betty's Azalea Ranch, you will never find a better service for hour lawn and landscaping needs in Northern Virginia! read more

I had a problem with my pressurized 2 gallon plastic tank pump sprayer that I use to spray weed killer on my lawn. I bought it about 7 or 8 years ago from Betty's Azalea Ranch and it now failed to stay pressurized, thus not properly dispensing the weed killer. I went to Betty's to buy a new one. I explained to the store owner, Steve, my problem was the pressure valve was leaking. He advised me to bring it in to let him repair it. I was dubious, not thinking it could be repaired, but I took it in the next day anyway. Later that day he left me a voice message to come back and pick up the fully functional tank sprayer. I returned to get it and found it to be working perfectly, holding the required pressure. Steve wouldn't take any compensation, and he further explained spraying techniques that will be helpful in the future. We recently purchased two trees from Betty's Azalea Ranch after visiting two other nurseries. Their inventory was the best in the area and it was enjoyable choosing the perfect trees. Terri coordinated the delivery and install and she was very helpful in ensuring the placement worked with the utility lines in our front yard. After delivery she called to provide watering recommendations and ask if the install went as planned. Everyone at Betty's was very professional and I highly recommend their nursery. read more

Went specifically to visit the koi and hopefully feed them, bc a friend mentioned they loved doing that. Asked a front building worker how to purchase food. Very unfriendly. She directed us to a building in back. Ask lady in back bldg if we could buy food, she said they stopped doing that as it got too crazy last year. She was also unfriendly. It was off would've the first employee, older, seemed to be there awhile, was not aware that they don't allow feedings any longer. For the rudeness of employees, I wouldn't give them my business, not when Merrifield usually goes above and beyond to help. Love Betty's. Independent local business too. The landscape design services are creative, thoughtful, and flexible (they install and/DIY). Kevin, the designer, educates as he develops ideas with the customer for professional installation or DIY. Janet, the scheduler, promptly returns calls and is very helpful with every aspect of executing a sale and/or changing an order. An installation that updated my front garden and replaced a crumbling walkway gave my home a new look. We are now working on the backyard. The plantings are all deer resistant. I appreciated Kevin's advice on this fact. As an inexperienced gardener, I would not have thought about deer resistance when selecting plants. Visiting Betty's is an education - well organized and very informatIve signs for each plant type. If a staff member does not have the answer they ask someone else, or refer you to the associate with specialized knowledge on site. Also - the information sheets available for just about every gardening task are thorough and hugely informative. If you can follow directions, you can achieve expert results with the guidance in Betty's info sheets. Betty's is well staffed and has a wonderfully diverse staff. A number of staff might be high school or college students who are learning horticulture. read more

We always have success at Betty's. Staff is always helpful and pleasant. Pluses... great recommendations, great selection, map of the place (it's big so you need to know where to look), convenient. Minuses... pricing is in line with Merrifield Garden Center so know what is better to get at big box stores or Meadows Farms. Recommendations: gentleman explained grass seed quickly and efficiently, helped us pick the right stuff for dense shade. Nice gentleman explained adding Wilt Pruf to deer repellant in sprayer made it stick to plants longer (really works). Selection: far more variety of shrubs than a big box store, found nice small mountain laurel, ink berry holly and other natives for woods restoration. Bulbs and rhizomes available in front building at reasonable prices. Itoh peonies (bare root) at great prices in spring. Suet and seed prices are competitive. Found garden implements there we couldn't find anywhere else locally. Map: it is a large place so check the map sign near the parking lot on left side of the front building. This will save you time if you don't want to wander around. Staff: if you have lots of in depth questions go on a weekday when they aren't swamped and they give you the attention you want. Know what you want on weekends as things get hectic. read more

I just had the worst experience at Betty's Azalea's Ranch. The signage says one price, but when I paid, it was a different price. A check was called out only to confim that the price wasn't what I thought. I told them that the signage is wrong. The ladies there told me I was wrong. I don't mind being wrong, but the sign is misleading! The service was rude. Not an apology that says, "ma'am the sign says 3 gallons were on sale, none of the plants there were 3 gallons!" For Goodness sakes, if none of the plants there were 3 gallons, take down the sign!!! Service was rude; appeared that workers there hate humans and could care less what customers want. Not sure what's so bad about the customer service. I've asked for help locating some plants and they point me in the right direction. They also have a very good selection of harder to find outdoor plants for a cheaper price than the more commercialized nurseries. This nursery isn't good for indoor house plants btw. read more

No guarantees, only good for flower pots After going to Merrifield, Home Depot and other nurseries I thought I'd try this one. The stated that they guarantee their plants. Well, they don't. I had bought some plants and pots and 2 plants started dying after 1 month, no guarantee, no money back, no credit. I got opposite reasons as to why my plants are dying, one person said too much sun, the other says it needs morning sun, then one person said too much water and then the other not enough water. Of course, my fertilizer was not the right kind or plant food, only their's is the correct one. I have to take these plants out and throw them away, about $45 worth. I went to Merrifield down the street, bought two new plants and was told they are guaranteed 100% for 6 months. The help at this place is not too friendly, and the owner was no help. Stay away, and if you must go to this place, only get some pots. read more

Extremely poor customer service. I was drawn in by their low prices but that was a mistake. The quality of their plants is very bad, as are their care and watering instructions. And they refuse to honor their 50% credit back policy for plants that die (they basically kick you out of their store or hang up on you if you ask for credit). So all in all, it's wasted money and you would have been better off spending a little bit more at a better nursery for a plant that doesn't die. I learned this the hard way. Will not be returning. Horrible customer service. Went in a couple days ago to buy a tree, at 3:30pm. At the front entrance, two people working there just stared at me and my family, making us feel very unwelcome. I told them we were wanting to buy a tree and they both looked at the other, acting very much like we were inconveniencing them and neither one wanted to help us. After much hesitation, an older gentleman finally radioed to someone in the back where the trees are located that we were headed back there to look at the available trees. He then spoke very rudely under his breath that they were closing in 30 minutes. Then, as we were walking to the back, someone started walking up to us from the tree section and yelled at us that they were closing in 15 minutes and that they wouldn't help us. My husband said that we just heard they were closing in 30 minutes, at 4 pm. "No, we close at 3:45. I can't help you" was the response. Needless to say, we left and took our business elsewhere and don't plan on returning. We went to Merrifield down the street, and while I realize Merrifield's prices are a bit on the high side, I'd say you get what you pay for. We had multiple people there approach us, happy to help and got all of our questions answered about our tree purchase. read more

I don't really give out one stars all that much but Betty's really earned this one. My wife and I went in expecting to spend a couple hundred on some plants that we could have in pots. We are not well versed in plants so we needed some help finding something suitable for pots that wouldn't grow too big, would maybe survive the winter, and some tips on how to care for them. With the only other specific being that one of the plants we wanted to be taller, like a small tree or any other ideas (this was mistake in saying as you'll see). I don't think that is a lot to ask for of a place this size. The first person I spoke too didn't seem to want to deal with me so he told me to head up to the front and talk to the people up there. I explained what we were looking for (don't forget I said something like a small tree). The young lady just looked at me and said that trees in the four pots wouldn't work and would all just die. I said that we three of them we just wanted some smaller plants and that only one of them we wanted something like small tree. I then said it didn't have to be a tree but I didn't know what to call it (a tall plant, a shrub, a vine) and that we just wanted it to be taller with some green at the top. She then asked for assistance and another lady came over. She relayed that we were looking for four trees to plant in four pots. I was given quite the stern look then and a short lecture on how trees in pots would just die and not do. I had to re-explain myself that we weren't looking for four trees to put in pots but three plants and one that I wasn't necessarily looking for a tree for the fourth but the look we were going for. That was basically met with a, well we can't really help you with that, why don't you walk around the gardens and see what you like? Wow thanks for all the help. Look I don't know plants. But to act all high and mighty like we're idiots because we don't, well I don't like dealing with businesses like that. Just like I wouldn't expect a plumber, roofer, electrician, obgyn, dermatologist, database developer, or any other number of professions for me to know much about their fields of expertise. Bright spot to this story? We immediately left without spending any money and went to Merrifield Garden Center which was much better. There we were told of various plants which would possibly work (with the caveat that there were no guarantees with winter) and actually walked around to those options and told the pros/cons of each. I have gone to Bettys for advice on lawn chemicals. Twice the recommended items did not function as promised. The management (owner) is loathe to make refunds or accept responsiility. He claims that the customer should have done something or should not have done something, and therefore the problem is not his. His personality, as that of his assistant, is arrogant and condescending. On the plus side, I have found their "Show Turf" fertilizer to be the best of the breed. If you don't have to interact with the staff, you will be fine. Does not accept American Express Cards. read more

16 acres of a lot more than azaleas...I still haven't seen it all. When you have a man in tow you must carefully weigh the pros and cons of forcing him to stay longer than he is peacefully capable. After four visits I only got the "look" once so it obviously ranks high with men as well. The prices here are the best I've come across. We bought several shrubs on sale and were surprised to see upon checkout that we were getting another 40% off. Sweet. In fact, of all the times I've gone I think only one of my purchases did result in some sort of surprise additional discount at check out. 2012 fall season I cashed in on - $12 Azaleas (not babies!), $22 for 5-foot pencil trees (whatt!?!?), 40% of dwarf conifers - when the dwarf conifer you want is $400+, this is a VERY nice discount. Also started buying mulch here, much higher quality than local home improvement stores. The staff are not only pleasant and very knowledgeable about WHAT they have - they know WHERE it is. I have used Betty's for years and my lawn is generally great unless we have too much rain or no rain. They give great advice on how to care for your lawn and plants and if you follow it, you will be pleased. You can take a weed in and they will identify it and recommend how to get rid of it. Buyer beware. First off, you can have 3 identical plants on the same table with three different prices. They say it is because the all come from different vendors and of course they pass that on to you. Second. They only warrant trees and shrubs. I bought 3 identical plants, at different prices, and planted them all together. One died. I went back and they just said no warranty. Then when I explained how bad my last visit was where I spend well over $100 they asked if I wanted to go pick another one. At full price! Really? Why not drop a few dollars to keep me as a customer? I just told them I would not be shopping them ever again and left. They seemed ok with that. Sad. Spend the extra $$$ and go to merrifield or spend less at Lowe's/Home Depot and get a warranty. read more
