Was in Oxford for an event and stopped by Betty's on the recommendation of a friend from the area. It's the old school southern BBQ dive he described. Servers were efficient and seemed like they knew the place inside and out. Lots of AL memorabilia on the walls. It's a bit kitsch and could use a little renovation, but fine overall for what it is. The pulled pork was fine, and friend green tomatoes lived up to the hype. I tried the brisket which was more like roast. I should know not to order brisket outside the Kansas City, Oklahoma, Texas corridor. Very distinctive BBQ sauce. It wasn't my favorite. read more

We have been coming here for a lot of years,always great food, until this week,we both had pork chops, OK, but we've seen better there, Couldn't eat the Mac and cheese, not home made anymore,out of a box with powder cheese, don't eat that at home....fried green tomatoes were good, my broccoli and cheese were cold and small potatoes were cold, we will give them one more shot,maybe it was just an off night. read more

Such a wonderful local BBQ spot! Whitney took such good care of my step-father and I, making us feel welcome and attending to our every need. Betty's BBQ offers warm Southern hospitality, & you feel that all are welcome. As folks from out of town, it's always an honor to be well received at a locally cultivated & loved establishment. There are lots of menu options, and everything that we tried was absolutely delicious! As someone who doesn't always eat meat, I found many vegetarian options available. The fried green tomatoes were out out this world, I can't wait to make the journey back and get them again next time. What I enjoyed about each dish was the consideration of flavors & seasonings that made each dish unique to Betty's BBQ. The blackberry cobbler was excellent and a wonderful way to end the meal. This was a great old school Alabama BBQ dive with friendly service and decent BBQ. I'm not sure if this used to be "Goal Post BBQ" as they had a sign for that AND for "Betty's Bar-B-Q" that seemed to both be for this location so I'm sure there is some interesting history there. Speaking of history they had a lot of fantastic historical stuff on the walls of this place going back decades that was a hoot to look at. My BBQ brisket plate was some of the better brisket I have had in this part of Alabama and the sauce it came with was also of a good flavor. They have some decent sides here and offer potatoes in a few different ways that was a bit unique. The service was friendly and efficient as they did a fantastic job of keeping my iced tea filled. Overall this is a decent place to grab a filling meal for a decent price and the historical hoots are free. read more

Made my first visit to Betty's today and I am so disappointed that I haven't tried it sooner. It was really good. I got the sampler platter because I couldn't decide what I wanted. It comes with 2 side, a piece of fried catfish, chicken finger and a little bowl of their BBQ meat. It was all really good and the service was awesome too. Kayla was great. Betty's has been around forever. It's great to stop in for a quick cheap lunch. Their food is just like home cooking. Not the best BBQ I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. Love their sides or 'fixins' and the friendliness of the staff can't be beat. Usually open only for lunch and go till they sell out of food for the day. Terrible, pre-packaged food. The parking lot is always busy so I thought I couldn't go wrong. Nope. First, this place needed a remodel 20 years ago. On to the food... I ordered the BBQ Pork plate with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. And the Cowboy Corn fritters. I'm positive everything is pre-packaged food just heated up. The coleslaw was a cabbage and mayonnaise purée. The sweet potato fries I could buy in the frozen section at Publix. The pork had zero flavor. Mushy. The "BBQ" sauce on top was disgusting. BBQ pork should stand alone and the sauce is on the side for enhancement. This was bad. Nothing had flavor and I think school cafeteria is a pretty good likeness. I won't be going back. Kitchen staff and waitresses were cussing and arguing while we were trying to eat. Chicken and fries was the only thing that was good. The biggest issue was the waitress busted into the restroom to confront a customer about complaining about a disgusting frozen hamburger. They simply should let people know that they could go to Mcdonalds and get the same thing but cheaper. I came for FRESH cooked food. This is not the place it once was. Unquestionably the best barbecue place in the region. Incredible pork barbecue that has unmatched flavor. World's best fried green tomatoes. I have tried them all over the South and nothing compares. Probably some people prefer the big, starchy heavily, rigidly, breaded kind, typical of chain restaurant green tomatoes, but those are not true Southern, and really are not good. On the other hand, Betty's green tomatoes are a flavorful treat, the tomato providing a spicy taste, unequaled by other vegetables. Someone's review said the food here was prepackaged - a malicious slander. Crazy talk. If you even walk by the restaurant you know that local hickory wood is always smoking pork in the back, you smell it and see it. Their catfish are exactly prepared as they should be. The local color and the flavors make this a place no one should miss, and it is highly popular with people who have tried it. People traveling through remember it for years and find their way back. Roadtrip: Driving across country, with my friend, to her retirement destination in Canton, GA After being on the road for many hours, we decided to exit Hwy 20 in search of some BBQ. Boy did we get lucky!!! Betty's is FANTASTIC !!! My friend had the ribs and I had pork bbq sandwich....yummmmmmy. The fried green tomatoes, mac&cheese and turnip greens were the best! Funny story....After my friend finished her ribs, she asked our wonderfully nice waitress for some wet wipes. The waitress looked at her and said in her beautiful southern drawl...whet whuaaaat? I typically don't take the time to review anything, but good lord I had to make time for Betty's. I was passing through Anniston with one of my employees to meet with a few executives at a Memphis based client. His friend recommended the place based on stopping there for years when he visits for the race. Best food decision I've made in a long time, and best down home cooking I've had since my family reunion. Best people too. When we arrived, the greeter apologized that their CC machine was down due to AT&T outage, and could only take cash or checks. My friend and I looked at each other disappointed as neither of us were carrying more than a couple dollars. When we shrugged and started to leave, the owner who was sitting at one of the tables said "we don't turn away customers" and offered to feed us on the house. We were standing there in disbelief. We were hesitant, but sat down. I figured I'd run out to a bank machine and grab cash while we waited on the food. On to the food... Had their BBQ plate with 3 sides, DDFGT (double dipped fried green tomatoes), green beans, and mashed potatoes with gravy. I followed that with their lemon ice box pie. I could barely stand after cleaning my plate, but it was all worth the misery! The food was so good, that we decided to stop back in on the way home to Atlanta. This time I had the sampler platter with BBQ, fried catfish, Chicken, and three sides (GB again, DDFGT again, and macaroni and cheese. Had to have the pie again. All of was nothing but fantastic. On the service..... Patty on the first night, Kristen on the second, with a dose of the lady that cooks, and the owner (Betty's daughter, Betty I believe is retired). I have never met kinder and more generous folks, had this level of hospitality matched with terrific food before in all my years of travel. It's possible that this could be the friendliest place in the world! A co-worker and I dropped in for a quick business lunch on our way back to Atlanta. Our server greeted us immediately at the door, took us to a table and got our drink order before we even sat down. The decor was typical of a small town BBQ spot and gave a very homely feel. The patrons were also very friendly and polite. The menu selection was a little lacking for what I was hoping for. The options for BBQ were basically a pork plate and 2/3 or beef plate and 2/3 plus a few sandwiches. I was really hoping for smoked chicken. Nonetheless I settled for the pork and 2 and it was very good. The pork was chopped, very moist and the sauce that came on it was good. The cole slaw was a little different than what I was expecting but exceeded my expectations. My baked potato was excellent. BBQ pork was over dressed with sauce that tasted like it came from a bottle. Cole slaw was NOT homemade which is inexcusable for a BBQ joint. Waitress (very sweet and kind) added a slice of tomato and a slab if raw onion. Tomato was fresh. Onion was cut upwards to three days ago. I know. I eat a LOT if them. I did not eat this one. Wow. Use to enjoy Betty's vegetable soup on carry out orders with cornbread. Bowl was a good fair sized plastic bowl with a plastic lid. Now they send it out in a rip off styrofoam coffee cup size with a piece of bland cornbread that has the flavor of cardboard. I did some research and most people agree that Betty's was the place to go. On my way there I had brisket on my mind, when I got there I was surprised to see that they did not have brisket as a menu item (bummer), so I ordered the pork plate with 3 sides. The plate comes with a 1/4 portion of their pulled pork, BBQ bread (Texas Toast) or cornbread. The sides I ordered were Mac and Cheese, Potato Wedges, and Fried Green Tomatoes. I have to say it wasn't great but not bad. I like to get a little bark in my pulled pork, plus it didn't have a real smokey flavor. What saves this place is the service, It was outstanding. The food order was put in and before I knew it the food was at my table piping hot. When I went to pay the bill the waitress asked me if I wanted a "To Go" drink, I said sure, so she gave my a huge cup of sweet tea for the road. The place looks timeless and has a lot of character, I think on my next trip I am going to sample one of the other BBQ places to give Betty's a fair comparison. read more

The BBQ and lunch specials are above average, which makes it better than most of competition in the area. You can't really go wrong with anything you order, but the coleslaw isn't my favorite. We evacuated from Florida to the Oxford area during Irma. I graduated High school in the area but had not been back in over a decade. I remembered Betty's from years back. I still loved it. It is not fancy, but I think is good food like you may find at your grandmothers house. Betty's had the 2nd best hushpuppies I have ever had! I could not get enough of them! I am not a fan of bar-b-q but I like Betty's. Now, my boyfriend was underwhelmed by part of his lunch but the other parts he loved, like the hushpuppies. Great place for a home cooked meal. I really enjoy the vegetable plate and variety of vegetable to pick from. I went for lunch one day. The place was nearly packed. Betty's was my wife's all time favorite restaurant. Even though they serve Barbecue, they put NO meat into their vegetables, so vegetarians are served nicely there too! It's kind of a country down-home kind of place, but they only serve pinto beans a couple times a week! They served good fried green tomatoes, not many but I have had better FGTs. My personal favorite is the Barbecue Salad. During football season, be prepared to watch Alabama Football on the TV! They have daily specials and the prices are reasonable.
