You may wonder why I would visit an American-themed restaurant in Mexico. Since I was here last, Rosarito has embraced a more eclectic approach to restaurants, so why not? Besides, my cousin--who lives in Rosarito--said Betty's was a must, so there you go. It usually takes me only one visit--one bite, actually--to sum up a place and their cuisine. That may sound snobbish; well, yes, it is. Those who have followed me on Yelp over the past years know my credentials, so suffice it to say that I know food in and out and love everything from the most humble street food to haute cuisine. But before I took a bite of the food, what set this place in my stellar region were the owner and chef: Dante (front of the house) and his wife Stephanie (chef--and yes, I use the term chef as she's no mere burger-flipper). Dante went to great pains to explain how they source their ingredients and that many of them are made in-house--getting rarer every day, unfortunately. The exterior and interior would win no House Beautiful contest, but with food like this, who cares? My cousin and I got the Deli Burger with pastrami that actually would stand on its own. The beef was cooked spot-on with the accompanying ingredients bringing it together into a perfect whole. We got fries and onion rings; both were way above average and with a knock-your-socks-off horseradish sauce to dunk them in, I couldn't have been happier. But what truly sets Betty's apart is they sincerely care about their food and their customers. Let me repeat that--THEY CARE! Many restaurants have lost that but not here. So, if you come to Rosarito and don't stop by Betty's, your trip just won't be complete. And you don't have to take just my word for it--from the multitude of five-star reviews, it's obvious many, many others feel the same way.

I ordered a junior shack burger which was just 1 smash burger patty instead of their standard 2. Even if I didn't get a double patty, my burger was still significantly bigger than say a McDonald's cheeseburger. We also ordered a mushroom burger which was a double patty burger w sautéed mushrooms. Both burgers were nice, juicy and with the right amount of char on the edges of the patties. We also ordered a regular side of their flat cut fries. Super bomb! Crispy and not too greasy! Parking is easy and there's indoor eating. No restroom though, but that's okay. Will be back!

Brgr Shack has almost perfected the smashed burger grilling and I appreciate the unique style of giving you a selection of variations of a the Brgr to choose from. 1) Shack Brgr: very tasty and the grilled onions was a nice addition. The Maillard reaction still produced a very juice Brgr with a soft tasty bun. The juices soaked into the bottom bun making it a soggy mess. A little salty, but, good. 2) Mushroom & Swiss Brgr: wife ordered this, but, got full on the Beef Loaded Fries (more on that later). Yet, she brought it home and reheated in microwave and she loved it!!! The Brgr reheated well. She said it was still juicy and well seasoned. Must have been good because she ate the whole thing!!! 3) Beef Loaded Fries: well, my wife also loved this and ate half at the Shack. The fries are thick chips, topped with crumbled Brgr, grilled onions, cheese and pickles. This was a favorite for us. The meal was good and filling. Something happened with the order and the kitchen didn't get the order slip. Had to go up and asked and the cook profusely apologized for the mixup. He quickly put our order together in a little over 5 minutes and the counter person also apologized for the inconvenience. Brgr Shack comped an order of plain fries which turned out well because we used those chips to scoop the toppings of the Beef Loaded Fries. The fries underneath got soggy quick. And there was no forks to be found. Stars subtracted for lost order and no forks. Will try again of course. The dining room was clean with ample tables and chairs. They have a wall full of studio quality pictures of the menu items. There is lots of parking in an older (the surface of the parking lot were full of cracks and pot holes) strip mall. Definitely a return visit call!!! Returning on a Wednesday to take advantage of the Crazy Cow 50% Discount on 2nd Brgr. Yes!!!

When we saw the Julian Beer Company, we couldn't help but be drawn in for a drink and food! Before ordering, we had used their restroom which is located inside the coffee shop; super cute aesthetic! We went inside, not the first building, but the second building. We had grabbed a menu at the front and looked at what we'd like. We had chosen a few items and waited at the bar area. The man working there wasn't pleasant. Unfortunately, we didn't feel welcomed. He was short with us, stared blankly, and didn't say a lot. There wasn't a greeting nor a nice transaction, since words weren't really exchanged. When we ordered, he didn't respond and there were long pauses. We felt quite judged and confused. We ordered anyway, and took a seat outside. We had ordered their IPA and their Japanese lager. For food, we ordered their cheesesteak, extra rolls, coleslaw, and their sausage. Their sausage was fantastic!! I loved every bite. Th with cheesesteak was also good and had a generous amount of cheese on top. Their beers nicely washed down the food on a warm day. After eating, we decided to waltz into the first building to look at their merchandise. Inside, a different man had greeted us with the biggest smile! He asked if we needed help, and gave us free stickers. He was very kind and made our day! I truly liked the city, beer, place, food, and the service that kind man had given to us. If we didn't have that interaction full of judgement, this place would be beyond five stars! Hoping it will be magnificent next time.

She made us feel like we were in for a treat. Everything is fresh, nothing is microwaved, and by her account this was going to be a whole experience. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the sales pitch. Not even close. We started with the IB Twinkies, which are basically bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese. They were mid to mediocre at best. Think about the ingredients: Fresh jalapeño, bacon, cream cheese. That's already a winning combination. But there was some kind of ham or other meat stuffed inside that just got in the way. A good jalapeño popper doesn't need much. Give me the fresh crunchy heat of the jalapeño, salty crispy bacon, and cream cheese to mellow everything out. If you're going to make a jalapeño popper, just make a really good jalapeño popper. Next was the Scotty Doesn't Know smash burger. For around $15ish, this thing was SMALL. My friend and I split it and we're talking maybe three or four bites each. The spicy ranch was basically ranch and Tapatío, and the whole burger was just kind of... fine. Smash burgers work because of their simplicity. Crispy beef, cheese, bread, sauce, balance. Once you start complicating that, whatever you're adding better make the burger more interesting. This didn't. I wouldn't pay that price for it again. Sadly, the BBQ Chopped Cheese was the real offender. I don't know what this was, but it wasn't what I think of when someone says "chopped cheese." Instead of chopped hamburger and cheese, the meat had this weird thready pulled-pork or pulled-beef texture. There were large chunks of green bell pepper, an off-putting barbecue flavor, and then the entire thing was slathered in this cheese roux where I swear I could taste the flour. It was basically a pile of pulled meat, peppers and onions covered in floury cheese sauce. I couldn't get past one bite. Our waitress didn't ask us what our thoughts were. Mercifully. And that's ultimately my problem with the food here. If you're going to make classic dishes, make them outstanding. If you're going to play with expectations and reinvent something like a chopped cheese, make sure you've mastered what makes the original good before you start introducing new flavors and textures. The location is cool. It has that beachy, surf-bar vibe, you can see the ocean, and the service was stellar. I take nothing away from the atmosphere and our server. That's honestly what pulled this review up to three stars. But the food? Mediocre to gross and all things in between. And considering the four-and-a-half-star rating and the expectations we walked in with, genuinely disappointing. I don't blame the wait staff, and I don't blame the cooks in the back. I blame management or the owner. If THEY think those dishes are delicious, that's fine. I can't change someone's messed-up taste buds. But I CAN say, as someone who has eaten some of the BEST food San Diego has to offer, it's very easy to recognize what isn't. Fix the food and I'm SO down to give y'all another chance. https://www.youtube.com/@TheFoodSleuths_SD

Anyways, it is slightly off the main street. There is plenty of parking available. The sitting arrangement is pretty cool. It looks like the chairs they have were made from different pieces of wood, it looks artistic (I dont know how to describe it). There is some art on the wall, there is music being played from a boombox and the vibe is just pretty cool. The menu is rather short, but I mean is a burger place so burgers only. The combo prices are great, they beat the prices of near by fast food chains. Good selection of drinks too although not alcohol. We got the cheeseburgers with bacon. The beef was frozen () but it went straight to the grill. Now for the price, I dont mind that the beef was frozen it actually tasted fantastic because of the grill. The sauce though! They put a sauce on the burgers that is to die for, totally unexpected. I dont usually like burgers but this place had me wanting another bite of their burgers every second. The bacon was perfectly crisp (not pre-frozen) and the fries were great too. Overall, I recommend this place if you find yourself in Rosarito wanting away from tacos.
