Owned by married couple Miriam and Santiago, from my initial contact with Miriam to the initial visit with Santiago, I knew this was the right business to work with. We hired them on the spot to trim the four very tall oak trees and a hickory that live in our backyard. We initially called Oakleaf, because they are arborists and understand trees. I also knew they would climb each tree with love, instead of pull up in a truck and just chop away. And, I wanted to support an independent business. Last year our trees were misdiagnosed as having some issues. We received two over-inflated estimates to have chemical treatments pumped into our trees, and one company wanted to cut down a tree and remove a neighbor's fence to get to it. We were devastated at the thought of losing one of our magical trees. Turns out all they needed was some serious pruning. And, we even learned our oaks are 300 years old. After a few back and fourth text messages with Miriam to find a nice dry day for Santiago and his team to come out, we finally found a day. The guys came out with ladders and ropes and chipper machine. I was stunned to see them climb our trees and get to work. It was like an acrobat show! At first I was sad to see some of our legacy limbs go, but I no longer have to worry about our trees accidentally dropping dead limbs on our neighbor. After several hours, they guys went from tree to tree. They carefully moved our patio furniture on the deck out of harms way, and put it back like nothing happened. Also, when they left, they cleaned up absolutely everything. Very reasonable estimate. We are so grateful for Miriam and Santiago. I decided to hire them because timing was important to me, and they offered to perform the service within two days. They showed up on time, and ten minutes later, the small stump was gone. The person performing the service was very friendly, and up to this point, it was five-star service. The disappointment occurred when I learned that I would be charged a credit card fee, especially since I was already paying the highest quote. My daughter runs a tiny business compared to Manitoya Tree Service, and she never charges her customers credit card fees. For that reason, I am giving them three stars, and I will not recommend this company to my friends and family. We obtained several estimates and decided to go with a well-established contractor, Pavestone Brick Paving, based on their reputation and experience. (We decided against hiring landscapers who also installed pavers even though their quotes were somewhat lower.) We visited some paver driveways that Pavestone constructed in our village and were impressed with the quality of their work. We also were bolstered by a visit to their facility in Des Plaines where we met the office staff and viewed the construction equipment. From start to finish, the experience was smooth and pleasant. We worked with Sergio, and I was completely satisfied with the service that he provided. From his initial visit to our house, through the discussions of the quotation, and conversations during the ongoing work, he displayed a pleasant demeanor and maintained contact with us, by phone and email. I felt quite comfortable working with him. He made useful suggestions during the planning process, such as rerouting the lower section of our downspouts below ground to discharge into our yard. I was also pleased that he was able to replace an unneeded section of our old driveway with sod. He provided samples of paver stones to assist us in choosing the best fit for our house and even created computer-generated renderings, depicting our house and driveway with the selected pavers installed (see photo). The job began about a month after we signed the contract. The crew of 5 men, led by Hector, worked tirelessly over a period of 6.5 days, in heat and occasional (light) rain, leading to a very attractive outcome. Each worker knew exactly what to do, and the team did their job in concert like a well-oiled machine. (See the photos which depict the progress of the project, from start to finish.) We are quite pleased with the outcome; the result is an attractive driveway that has become the envy of my neighbors. I have received many compliments from them in the days following completion. The design he came up with addressed all of our erosion concerns and netted us a fantastic two level patio set up that gave us plenty of space to cook, eat and relax. The plantings are healthy, plentiful and addressed all of my requests on color, style, etc. Andrew was a breeze to work with from a design standpoint and John and his crew were consummate professions with the install. They started on time, kept us apprised of any issues (of which there were almost none) and were quick to address any questions or concerns I came up with. We bid this project out to multiple vendors. Poul's was not the least expensive (nor the absolute most expensive), but they were the highest quality and best design. I feel the value for what we paid was more than fair and will use them again for future projects. Highly recommend.
