Locals know best. I was introduced to this restaurant as the place ex-president Bill Clinton dined…read moreduring his tour. We walked in late afternoon, and the place was busy and loud. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait very long, but I hear the wait can be extended during peak hours. This vibrant restaurant has been serving Belgian cuisine since 1968, and its list is extensive. I love the table setting at this restaurant. The placemat has a picture of an artistic dish; when you place the utensils on the side, the images stand out like a plate. BREAD, BUTTER, and MIXED NUTS were served as starters. Something about the bread in Europe is so good. Also, the addition of the mixed nuts was a nice treat. FILET AMERICAIN (Raw ground beef, shallots, capers, and gherkins) - Known as Belgian Steak Tartare with a side of French Fries and Pickles. I believe the meat was partially steamed, as the coloration had a brownish hue. Anyhow, I am glad that I tried this BELGIAN CLASSIC. It tasted like eating a FLAVORFUL Dutch burger without the bun. The texture was very soft and easy to swallow. The herbs and shallots enhanced the flavor of the meat to make it taste natural. BELGIAN SAUSAGE with MASHED CARROTS and POTATOES - This was another good dish we ordered. The Sasauge was FLAVORFUL, and the mashed side was light and delicate. The mashed color of orange and yellow gave a pop to the presentation. Overall, Belgian Sausage is a safer selection for someone with health concerns about eating something raw. Service was slow due to it looking like a full house. However, I liked how they had the card reader ready. Swipe, sign, and leave. No need to think about tipping because it's all included.

I adore this place!…read more I've been to this restaurant twice now, both times with the BF and his parents. I simply love the simplicity and the freshness of the seafood! The restaurant is simply and elegantly decorated, and it is not a pretentious place. I like to order off of the chalkboard Suggestions menu, as you know it will be fresh and it is what is in season. They also have a chalkboard of Suggested/Featured wine, which are excellent too! At our most recent visit, we had the salmon tartare, tuna tartare, crab fritter and shrimp croquettes as starters. Everything was superb. I had the salmon tartare, it is mixed with ginger and soy sauce. For me, it was a bit too much soy sauce (therefore salty), but the freshness of the fish still came through and I loved it. As main, everyone took something off of the Suggestions menu, except me, I had the fish & chips. I did not realize the fish & chips would be such a big portion with two filet! This is not a typical greasy English fish & chips, rather, it was light and fluffy with just the right amount of batter and perfectly crispy. Toucan Sur Mer serves the fish & chips with a homemade tartare sauce. It was amazing! What I also love about this place is that the waiters/waitresses offer to explain the fishes to you, because the Suggestions chalkboard usually consist of fishes other than your common salmon, tuna, cod...etc. At this visit, we learned about the bonito fish :)

They're famous for their seafood paella with lobster, which is a must-try here. We skipped it since we wanted to save our full paella experience for Barcelona. I ordered the seafood spaghetti and my husband fell in love with it lol. There's something special about the sauce, so rich and flavorful. It was so good that we had to come back again before leaving the city. We also had the mussels, of course. You can't come to Brussels and not do "mussels in Brussels." The white wine sauce was amazing, and the frites that came with it were hot, fresh, and perfect for dipping. Portions are generous and everything is great for sharing. We also loved the fresh rolls they bring out at the start. The service is great! The ambiance is cozy and relaxed, perfect for a casual dinner or a special night out. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place. If I'm ever back in Brussels, I'll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend!
