Comfortable & friendly office, attentive and flexible in accommodating my schedule. Dr Bickford has always been my families optometrist and we are never disappointed. He's on time, personable and actually ASKS about my health changes,diet, lifestyle etc during the eye exam. I personally appreciate his recommendations and teaching during my visits. I would give zero stars if I could. He charged me for 2 contact lense fittings when one of them was because his assistant ordered the wrong size for the first one. Then when I went in for my final fitting he didn't give me my prescription. To those of you who don't know, optometrists are required by law to give you your prescription after the final fitting whether you request it or not. I am still waiting for my prescription which he was supposed to mail to me but did not. He is rude and offensive and acts like you're an idiot when you ask a simple question. He also needs hearing aides and constantly asks for you to repeat yourself in a really rude way as well. I won't go here again read more

Dr. Bickford has been my go-to eye doctor for over thirty years. He's a caring professional who actually explains what's going on and loves to share his knowledge. He's awesome when it comes to contact lenses. He will work to make sure you get the lenses that are the best fit for your comfort and vision and lifestyle. I once had a pink eye infection. It was really conjunctivitis that needed medication and he prescribed the right stuff and I was better the next day! He saw me promptly and called me the following day to make sure the treatment was working, ready to change it if need be. He's really cares. He does have eyeglasses, including a reasonable, not great selection of frames and never tries to sell you something you don't need. My eyeglasses are always perfect---the first time. He has no problem giving out prescriptions for eyeglasses or contact lenses so you can get your optics somewhere else if you want, but you will find his prices fair and services to be excellent. I wanted to leave this review because it seems to me that Dr. Bickford has gotten a bad rap on Yelp. I took my son to see him last week. My son needs specialized eye therapy and Dr. Bickford is one of the few Drs in SB that offered it. In fact he was the only one that was available this month to see me. He took us with in the week. On top of that two of the three other Drs I spoke with charge $2600 for their services to help my son. The third was $600 but not available to see us until nearly April. Dr. Bickford took his time and ran my son through a gambit of eye tests and then began us on a therapy program. He took the better part of 1.5 hours to go through every test and when he was done he simply smiled and said we can fix this easily. Here's the kicker- HE CHARGED ME $75 and that is without insurance. There are two more follow-ups that cost me $50 per visit. My son's first eye DR, who I will not name, charged me $190 for half of the time and tests that Dr. Bickford did. I can't thank him enough and would highly recommend him. read more

Absolutely awesome professional, caring and actually talks to you about what's going on! I've been seeing Dr. Bickford for many years, as have my husband and my kids. He makes it a learning experience, sharing his great knowledge about optics and eye health. He's a contact lens perfectionist and will go out of his way to find the very best contact lens design and material for you, from any company, anywhere. He doesn't have the largest eyeglass frame selection compared to an eyeglasses store, but he's got a pretty decent selection, considering, and he always offers a written prescription so you can get new glasses anywhere you want, which I did ;-) My kid's eyeglasses were fabulous. He used Zeiss optical laboratory to make custom lenses. If you don't know about Zeiss, the best-made optics in the world, you probably don't own a camera, or binoculars, so look them up. I once had a conjunctivitis eye infection. Dr. Bickford saw me right away and prescribed the correct medication to fix it quickly. He called me the next day to make sure I was better. We couldn't ask for a better eye doctor. I wish we still lived in SB! When do visit, we try to schedule our annual exams with Dr. Bickford. Great doctor! read more

Horrible doctor and very unprofessional! Worst eye exam experience I've ever had. This was my first time at Dr Bickford's office to get my annual eye exam. He never introduced himself when I went into the exam room, never asked my about my health & eye history (from all the forms you fill out as a new patient) and his equipment was old and out of date. Towards the end of the eye exam he left the room for a few minutes to analyze my current glasses and prescription. All that he could tell me after "analyzing" my prescription was that it was completely wrong for my eyes and I needed to get that fixed...but he never bothered to explain my options in regards to getting a new prescription. Usually when a doctor recommends a new prescription he/she outlines the available options to decide what is best for you as the patient. I had to finally ask what my options were because he wasn't offering up any solutions. His response was short and curt and didn't really provide a solution. He made me feel like an idiot for not realizing that I had a wrong prescription and said that whoever I went to previously did not know what they were doing when they gave me my set of glasses. He didn't seem remotely interested in helping me get a new prescription. Quite frankly he was so rude, cold, unproffesional, and strongly lacked in customer service skills that I don't trust his prescription/analysis at all. I will go to get a 2nd opinion elsewhere. Do not go see this doctor. It is a waste of your time and money. He does not do anything to make you feel welcome in his office or trust that what he recommends is true. For something as costly and vital as eye prescriptions, you should be able to trust who you are going to because eye sight is something that affects you everyday life. And as a doctor I think it's time for him to retire because he obviously does not care about patient treatment/service. As the saying goes "word of mouth is the greatest form of marketing". If you can't treat your patients well then I don't understand how a doctor expects to stay in business. I would rather pay more to go to a company like LensCrafters who provides a more thorough exam than Dr. Bickford and where I'm actually treated like I matter as a patient and that healthy eye sight is important. If Dr. Bickford ever reads this I hope he takes it to heart and actually takes steps to learn some "bedside manner" and care for his patients in a way that makes them feel comfortable, welcomed and trusting of his experience and advise. I've been going to Dr. Bickford for many years, and I am very pleased with his practice and procedures and with his expert advice about glasses, contact lenses, and various eye issues I've had. I've recommended him to many of my friends, and they all thank me for the recommendation. What we like most about Dr. Bickford is the personal attention we get and the time he takes to do a thorough examination. In a day and age where the adage that time is money drives many doctors to brief encounters with patients, Dr. Bickford is a refreshing throwback to a time when eye doctors took extra time with patients to understand their opthalmological issues well. read more

I'm new in town and Dr. Bickford happened to be in network for my insurance, and I'm glad. He and his staff were personable and knowledgable. Dr. Bickford gave me the most thorough eye examination I have had. His assistant stayed after hours and let me finish up picking out frames since I was the last appointment of the day.
