Had an extremely disappointing experience getting my bike tuned up at Bicycle Ambulance. I dropped off my bike and the store said they'd call me in about a week when it was ready. Over a month later, I still hadn't heard back, so I called the store, but didn't get any answer. Two days later, when I'm out of town, the store calls me and says it's "absolutely urgent" that I come by and pick up my bike because it's taking up space in the store. I explained that I was out of town and couldn't pick it up that week, and that this was the first time I was hearing about the bike being finished, even though it had been more than 30 days. The person on the phone said "Oh, they should have called you, it's been done for weeks." The next week, when I'm back in town, I call the store verify the hours and tell them I'm coming to pick up the bike that day. At 3:00p, I stop by, and the store is complete empty -- door's closed and locked, and the lights are off. I call the store number a dozen times, but no answer. I stand outside for 20 minutes before a worker comes from down the street and unlocks the door, and he gives no explanation or apologies for why the store has been closed when I tell him I've been waiting for 20 minutes. When we get inside, he gives me the bike (which, I admit, was very nicely done), and when I go to pay, he can't find the ticket to ring me up -- it takes another five minutes to go into the back to dig around before he finds the ticket and I can pay. TLDR: While the bike tune up was good, the customer service experience was atrocious. Would not recommend Bicycle Ambulance when there are many other options around. read more

I ordered a second bike to replace and brought it here to have them set it up safely for my son to ride. The second bike ended up being defective as well. My tire went flat while I was getting a haircut today (7/24) and they were right next store and they said they could fix it and to come back in an hour. The clerk quoted me a price of $18.80 upon return and when I finally was able to checkout his boss said the price should be $28.80 because it was a an electric bike, which makes little sense since a flat tire is a flat tire regardless of being electric or not! We agreed to a price of $20 cash and he said the price would be $28.00 if I had the same service in the future. Fair enough, and when I left the electricity in the bike was not working and I went back to ask him what happened and he was extremely defensive as I did not know the electricity had been turned off, and then when he showed that, the electricity did not automatically turn back on while we went back and forth as to why the electricity was not on, and then finally it did turn back on. It was obvious to me he was afraid he had done something wrong as working on these bikes is different from a traditional one and you require that expertise. Some other customer waiting decided he needed to weigh-in and accused me of yelling at the employee and clearly seeking too incite a larger argument, which was not needed as he insisted on saying he did nothing wrong, but never saw what occurred and had no idea what was done. This wound up into a profanity-laced argument with him following me out the door, threatening me and turning into this something that was none of his business, but he was determined to make it so. Why is this person not minding their own business? Do you think I want to come back and argue? I needed to get the electricity working again. That was my only goal and when you leave a bike with a vendor and the electricity was not working, what am I to think given his defensive posture? The work provided was fine regarding the tire, but I was not given a simple estimate as to what this would cost and I did indicate to him it was in fact, an electric vehicle when I left the bike for repair, a fact he conveniently ignored. When the electricity turned back on, he accused me of yelling at him and proceeded to tell me never to return. I have no intention to ever returning anyway since the way they do business to me is not professional. Yes, changing a tire doesn't take a skill set, but at least acknowledge the bike was electric when I left it, and your worker quoted the $18.80 rate. How about providing one with a valid receipt that is not scribbled like a pharmacy prescription for one? I don't want to be argumentative, but what would anyone do if you left a bike with a shop and the electricity was not working? To infer this was my fault was at the source of my criticism of this whole episode that could have been avoided if he just tried to help instead of absolving himself from the issue at hand. This may be chalked-up as talking past each other and I will take some blame for my frustration, but there is no need to act in this manner as if he was some victim. Take responsibility for your work and try to help, not attack the customer as if I was ripping him off! They changed the tire just fine. Anyone can do that. I wish I never stepped into this place and don't worry, I never will again, so don't worry! AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS! read more

This is my first review based solely on an experience with a high-rated Yelp local business. I have a Schwinn mountain bike that was in need of rear tire repair. What kind, I wasn't too sure, it looked like a flat but I'm not a bike mechanic. So I went to Bicycle Ambulance, which was pretty easy to find, and spoke to the gentleman behind the counter -- Newton. I told him I had a flat, and he told me to bring in the bike. Immediately my bike was on the holster by two other mechanics who, with some finagling, got my rear tire off the frame. I watched in fascination as the mechanics work swiftly on my bike and saw Newton thoroughly going through that rear tire inch-by-inch for any rubber issues. When I asked if the tire was still good, I could only but believe him when he said that there was no issue with it. He also adjusted my bike seat, which was stuck, to the perfect height for me -- all just by his eye-measure! In less than 10 minutes it was done, only my rear tire needing a simple tube change. There was no talk of 'you-might-need-this' or 'you-should-replace-that' -- in other word, no unnecessary sales-related chats. The price was spot-on for the part + labor and tax. I've known Tony (the owner) since my beginning days of mountain biking in 1994 so this review is long overdue. I can't remember how we found out about him but I'm so glad we did. He showed my former husband and I a few trails and it felt like a cool community we had with him in our lives. Times changed, I moved to Thousand Oaks and it has been several years since I've been to his shop which is now in a different location than before. When I showed up unannounced, his brother was working and he was amazing. All I needed was my cleats transferred over to my new shoes. He was able to get it done in about 30 minutes since he was busy getting the shop ready for the day ahead. He had just opened. I was thrilled because it is important to get the cleats in the same position since we all have different body mechanics. These guys are the real deal, a total neighborhood shop that feels like home when you walk in. Be prepared though, it doesn't have the glitz and glamour of a typical shop since he also sells used bikes and rents out bikes. It is packed in with bikes wall to wall. :) read more

My first choice of shops to bring my bike to when I need bicycle help. I live a couple blocks away from another local independent bike shop but ride all the way to Bicycle Ambulance because of stellar experiences in the past. I'd give fifty stars if yelp had them to give. I needed a bumpy tire diagnosed and fixed, and I said I wanted an easier ride, I felt like my bike was too slow and heavy. Was recommended narrower tires so I gladly got them to make commuting more effortless I rode up a steep hill much easier on the way home. I'm so happy, feel so well taken care of.
