The kind of person that likely had incredible setups in his youth and still got dusted on uphill climbs. This shop has a really skilled bicycle mechanic, but he has really POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE skills. Since he is the closest bike shop to where I live, I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars there, on the many bikes that I have owned over the last decade. Today, I entered the completely empty shop and asked if he could adjust my brakes. He would look up at me and ask if I could bring it in another time, because he wanted to read his emails. I must have looked annoyed when I told him that I would just leave with my bike, if he was too busy. Possibly sensing this would probably be the last time that that he would see me as a customer, he stated, "well just wait 15 minutes and when I finish reading my emails I can do it". When done, I questioned why he only adjusted the handbrake adjustment on the handlebar (which was almost completely adjusted out already) and not closer to the brake. I was surprised that his brake adjustment was so suboptimal and I am at a loss why he seems apathetic to pleasing customers lately. I have NEVER asked to borrow tools or have him do ANYTHING on my bikes for free. I have ALWAYS paid him in full, whatever he bills me, even for the most minor adjustments or requests. He was my "Go To" bike mechanic for many years because of his bike knowledge and skills, I even love his beautiful dogs but I am hesitant to bring my bikes back there because of his poor attitude. I bought my bike at Veloworx / Sweet a few years ago. I wish I had read all the negative reviews here first and saved myself some time and money! I keep my bike in my garage but I live and ride at the beach so I like to keep it in good riding condition. When I bought the bike the owner, Sueken, ( I think that's his name) offered me "free tune ups for life". Beware! The following year I got my "free tune up" as promised but last year he rudely said "I never said that" (if he never said that, then why was the previous tuneup no charge?) So, I just smiled and said, "That's ok. Go ahead and tune it up." I knew it was too good to be true. (LIAR) Before I go any further let me say that about the 3rd or 4th time I rode the new bike, one of the pedals just came off. Thank God I wasn't going very fast! I did hurt my leg but thankfully nothing too serious. When I brought it back and he acted like cold and distant. Still, after it was fixed, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and continued to take my bike there. So, this year I take the bike in for the annual tune up. One of my brakes had completely failed and there were a few other issues that needed attention. Before I dropped it off I wondered if it was necessary to remove my headlight and my tail light. I decided not to do it because I felt like I could trust them. After all, I bought the bike from them. So, I go back to pick it up and take it for a quick test ride and both front and back lights are obviously missing. The string LED lights I had woven on both wheels had also been removed. They were fine, I just needed to replace the battery. I never told them to remove them. I came back to the shop and said as much. The kid doing the tune up seemed like a scatterbrain. He fumbled around some parts on the counter and told me he couldn't find them. I said, "Well, look a little more. They have to be there somewhere" He looked a little more and told me he couldn't find them. The whole time the store owner was acting as if he was busy and hung his head the whole time. I was looking at him expecting him to step in and help but he just continued to hang his head. He then said, "you must have removed them before you dropped it off." I said , "No. The only place I keep my lights is in a bowl on the kitchen counter with the chargers. That's where they've been kept since I owned the bike." I'm a nice guy. Sometimes people make mistakes. So, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Sure enough when I got home, no lights. But I already knew that! I was really mad but I knew that there's no way he would offer to replace my lights. It just wasn't worth the effort. He's alway been very rude and I just didn't want to get into it over something I knew he wouldn't cover. The tune up cost me $145. The lights cost me well over $100 and the LED's were about $20 on Amazon. I wonder how often parts go missing there? The lesson learned here is DON'T TRUST THEM! So now, here's what I really think. The owner doesn't deserve to be in business. When I think back of the all the times I went in there and put up with his coldness and distant attitude, I wish I had just gone someplace else! There's plenty of other bike shops in this town. The only nice thing I can say about this shop is that he has nice dogs. So I'm giving my one star to them. the only way he even deserves one star. That leaves the owner with zero stars. Do yourself a big favor and take your business someplace else! read more

But, the tire wasn't properly rotating and when we took it in were met with frustration and negativity. These guys saved our lives in an emergency! TSA broke my dad's bike that was needed for a race the next day. We were recommended to this place by more than one cyclist. I am SO glad they told us about Veloworx! While Sugen (the bike guru here) didn't have the part needed, he was able to figure out a fix so my dad could ride the bike in the race. This guy knows his stuff. He is an expert in the field, and perhaps the best bike mechanic anywhere. And there was another guy there that was so helpful, and understood how important it was to get the bike fixed. I can see why all the elite cyclists go here for their needs. Unscrupulous, Smug, Expensive, Condescending, Curt. I don't usually rate any business other than culinary related but I'll make an exception. I went here on the suggestion of a good friend who is an avid road biker. I own several bikes including two high end road bikes. One that needed minor and I mean minor TLC. From first visit inquiries to ass raping charges that were criminal this shop is to be avoided if at all possible. I had a feeling it was coming based on my first impressions, the staffs interaction with other customers and the cooler than thou attitude that seemed common throughout. Reminds me of surf shops I used to do business with. The ones that don't do well spend more time talking story and BS with locals and disregard the common man or woman who they should really cultivate and enlighten i.e. tomorrows loyal customers. At the end of the day outfits like Veloworks piss off of potential clientele and have a bunch of surf rats or in this case bike rats taking up retail space. I brought in an old 70s Schwinn frame for a restore project after dropping almost 200 bucks for a tuning and grease the know it all mechanic wants to charge me 5 bucks to take off a chain OR sell me the tool. Than the owner scoffed at the bike and said it was not worth it. I have had the bike since I was a kid and it has a ton of sentimental value. Had about 5 good comebacks for this dude but figured he was not worth it. The keyboard is mightier than the sword. My humble advice is YouTube your bike issue and repair yourself or go up the street to Bike Ambulance. Solid and honest shop. If only I knew about them before... read more

My pedal fell off on my ride.I walk in and no one is around. I have to practically go to their back room to get someones attention. The on call tech working on a bike looked up at me and did not say a word just went back to the bike he was working on A gentleman came out of the back. I told him my situation and he responded "No, I won't be responsible if you fall on your face" now i have to walk my bike three miles home. Never have I had such horrible service. The crazy part if I liked their beach cruisers and was looking to get one when I do not feel like riding my road bike however, I will never ever give these guys my business. read more

The owner, Sugun (sp?) is a jerk. One of the employees, Keith, is awesome. If you're in there when Keith is in there, you're in good hands, he is friendly and knowledgeable. If it's just Sugun, I would avoid the store. I bought a bike there on clearance, a couple years old, and got what I thought was a good deal on it. The bike mechanics are a joke: After taking it in three times, every mechanic who tried never managed to adjust the front derailleur properly so that it wasn't rubbing in either the highest or lowest gear combination. Also, I was charged for what I thought should be covered under their three year service offer with purchase of a new bike. I never even got what I paid for, having to bring a wheel back in for a bearing adjustment that never happened and a truing that also never occurred. They also sell some items that are not worth their price and don't warranty them - like a poorly-welded bottle cage that broke after a month of moderate use. The prices are commensurate with the area and what a shop would sell something for. Stuff is always going to be cheaper online, be it bike shops or otherwise. I can't say I'd recommend this shop to anyone that I like. read more

This place doesn't deserve 1 star. The owner is an asshole, he even yelled at me during my last visit. Don't waste your time or money here. Backstory: A month earlier I had my girlfriends bike serviced here. Paying ~$120 for a full-service, you'd think the bike would be in decent shape. But the the bike made awful noises and squeaked during each pedal. I went back today to have it checked out, and the owner (Sueken - an asian man that works behind the counter) literally yelled at me when I asked if they had a computer system (because he couldn't find my receipt in his unorganized piles of paperwork) Luckily, as the yelling match escalated, one of the bike techs said he would take a look at it. They techs quietly apologized to me, and asked him to calm down. My brake pads were rubbing and the techs fixed them. Sueken sulked in the corner, angered as his bike techs gave me proper customer service. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. Take your bike to Linus on Abbot Kinney, or The Bike Whisperer. Veloworx should go out of business. Sueken is angry, immature and takes out his problems on customers. He's obviously miserable & customers don't deserve to put up with his shit. read more

First, the "SWEET" sign is on the building because that is part of the name of the boutique furniture shop that used to be in this spot before it presumable ran out of business (funny, i always thought it was a gourmet candy store until I looked it up, probably why they didn't last long) . This bike shop took up residence here and never bothered to change the sign, nor did it change anything else about the place which continues to have a southwest/spanish motif. No bike graphics, brands, logos or anything on its exterior that might be indicative of the nature of the store, except for the row of bikes outside that you see when they're open. I've lived nearby all these years and I've never known the name of this place until I happened to see the "Veloworx" name in faded paint on the ground in the parking lot. This kind of contributed to my general impression of this store not really caring about its business, and I never really bothered to come in until recently, which is when I noticed the faded "Veloworx" paint on the ground. Unfortunately, to add to the oddity of this place complete lack of outward marketing or advertising of its presence, or at least taking down the name of the old business, was the fact that the guy in the shop was remarkably blasé about my presence in the store. I was looking for some bike accessories and had some questions, but getting them answered was like pulling teeth. I didn't feel welcome at all and felt like I was intruding. I returned again weeks later and got the exact same response. After checking this place out on Yelp and finding that the poor customer experience was the norm rather than the exception, I made the decision to buy the accessories I needed online for virtually the same price. If my experience had been even the slightest bit otherwise, I would have gladly paid cash to buy the gear then and there rather than wait for it to be shipped to me. I concur with others that have criticized the owner for its poor marketing and customer relations. In this recession when businesses all over are placing a premium on customer service to win and earn business, it is kind of a real shock when you come across a store where they maintain a markedly unwelcome environment. I don't care if they're the most knowledgeable expert on bikes in the LA area, if you or your behavior demonstrate to me that you don't care about my business, I'm going to go elsewhere. Although a mostly one-star joint, I gave it an extra star for having decent enough quality accessories, although priced rather high. My go to places for my bike needs are Helen's Cycles, Bicycle Ambulance or the Bicycle Whisperer, and unfortunately for Veloworx, thats how its going to remain. read more

From what I can gather, the main reason this shop pulls weight is that they have exclusive distribution for some high end brands. So if your looking for specialty high end frames, thats a big reason to go here. Other than that, it seems like this place has all the usual stuff for people looking for beach cruisers and or basic bikes. The prices on accessories (like u-locks, and bikes) aren't a rip off, but are on the higher end of the spectrum. There is a guy Keith who works here who is really nice. He is definetly the person to talk to (there is an Asian guy who although knowledgable, tends to be rather blunt). all in all, a solid bike shop that is better for those looking at the higher end of the road bike spectrum. read more

Road Bike Review This review is for anyone with a true road bike, especially those bikes on the higher-end. HUGE mistake coming to Veloworx after using Helen's and VeloFix (never confuse Veloworx with VeloFix as they couldn't be more opposite). I could go into details but the point is the degree of expertise and care are far greater at other bike shops around town than what you will get from Veloworx. After less than 2 weeks post their tune-up, I had to bring in VeloFix (they come to you home in their sprinter vans) to adjust all the wrong adjustments that Veloworx did. And yes, I gave the owner of Veloworx the opportunity to fix his mistakes. He said that's just how it is and thankfully, I knew enough to know he was wrong. I didn't want to argue with someone who wasn't going to fix glaring issues. He is either arrogant, incompetent or was having a bad day and didn't want to deal with a customer, but regardless, none of those excuses work for me and the $175 and time that I wasted should be a warning to those with road bikes they value. There are plenty of bike shops in LA who do consistent, top-level work, but I wanted my bike back faster than the others could provide at the time. Had I read some of the negative reviews on Veloworx before bringing in my bike, I could have saved myself the aggravation and wasted $$$. Lesson learned. read more

The owner(Sukeun) and the mechanics (Edder and Chris) are all knowledgeable and helpful. Not only do they know how to work on bikes, they all do a fair amount of riding. While most shops try to sell you a bike, this shop tries to sell you the right bike. By "right bike" I mean one that is suitable for your body and that will be the conducive to the type of riding you want to do. Many shops were attempting to put me on bikes with extremely short head tubes that would lead to twitchy steering but mor importantly a disproportionate saddle height to stem ratio. Not only will this lead to you having a back that is straight and flat like the pro riders, it means you probably won't be doing much riding as most people aren't able to handle these extremem positions for lengthy periods of time. People that say Sukeun is cold and lacks personality just haven't given the guy a chance to talk or view themselves as being experts on everything. I guess most people would rather have someone who just smiles and nods. Me, I would rather have someone that knows what he is talking about, cares about the bikes he sells, and will put you on the proper bike for you. read more

Met and/or exceeded my expectations for the work I needed done. I just got my hybrid univega back today. I had the front wheel trued ($20) and a much needed tune up ($40). Final price reflects the exact amount they quoted me. I declined several sales suggestions (which were reasonable suggestions, just not what I personally need) and the employee respected that and moved along. I was in and out in less than five minutes upon drop off. I took it in on a Tuesday and pick up was scheduled for Friday (so turnaround time of several days). I returned following Tuesday to pick up & my bike was ready to go. I was in and out of pick up in less than five minutes. Overall, I interacted with four different employees and all were friendly and helpful. So far so good as it rides like a dream. Glad I did not read previous reviews (ignorance is bliss?) as I probably would have avoided the place. Going in without any preconceived notions was a good thing. I committed to a brake adjustment for $15.00 after I custom built my bike, and the mechanic did a fine job on that. But gave it back to me, and said, you probably need to bring it in for a full inspection, for instance, your headset is really loose. 5 days later, my handlebar loosed from the headset in a near-disaster situation. Why not just fix it for me. these guys are cheap as f$ck. want to charge for everything. I'll avoid at all cost. Also bought a Brooks handlebar wrap for them. It was old, glue didn't hold, and was torn 1/2 way through. These guys are bunk. great bikes on the wall though. but the brutal dicT owner won't sell them to you. Brutal shop.
