Amazing!! I had broken the seatpost clamp on my Giant bicycle (totally my fault). I had tried looking for the replacement part to no avail. I decided to call Giant Santa Monica and spoke to Elon. He looked up the part for me and told me he had one available in the shop. When I went to pick it up, Elon gave it to me as well as taught me how to dislodge the old clamp. Thanks Elon!! I met the owner of Giant Santa Monica (Elon) while on a group ride. We met because my bike had a loud creaking noise. My mechanic replaced some parts but now says I need a new bottom bracket. Elon invited me to stop by his shop. Elon mentioned there are often easy fixes that are overlooked. After another couple of weeks of squeaks, I made into Giant. The shop was clean and well stocked with bikes and supplies. I was prepared to buy a new bottom bracket. Elon put the bike on the rack and completed some quick inspections of my components. I was shocked at the few simple adjustments required to fix the noise. Elon instructed me to ride the bike for a few days to make sure the problem had been resolved. Two weeks later, My bike is quiet and running smooth! I did not an expensive bottom bracket or pay big money for his expertise. If you're looking for a local shop for kids bikes to high end bikes, Giant Santa Monica has you covered. I recommend the service department. They provided a quick turn time on my bike. Selection: Great for Giant bikes (and associated brands) Value: Average per manufacturer suggested prices Service: Friendly staff who try to be helpful, but they've got an odd policy against trying bikes before you buy. I've never been to an LBS that didn't let me try a bike before I purchased, so I found that odd. I understand ultimately bike fit needs to be dialed in, but for things like frame compliance, steering, shifting and overall ride feel, you can't avoid a test ride to figure out. Otherwise, bike manufacturers wouldn't have such wildly varied prices and and specs for their bikes. I'm not sure if the bike shop was worried about bike theft, but typically just leaving a drivers license behind or is sufficient in these cases. Doesn't make sense if one could test drive a car but not a bike. The associate was adamant that all bikes felt the same and it's all about dialing in a custom fit. Couldn't disagree more. No amount of bike fit adjustment could make a Trek Domane feel like say, a Giant Propel Advanced SL 0. The geometry is vastly different and so are the components. Needless to say, I left after growing bored of the store's spiel on why I couldn't test ride a bike. Even if what they said was true, from a customer standpoint, trying something can help build an emotional attachment to the item and help make a sale. This a common tactic for car sales. Crossing this place off my list and sticking with Helen's or Specialized SM. read more

Buy your bike from another retail shop. My experience with this store was terrible. I went in ready and prepared to purchase a bike for a friend that our group had researched. The sales guy could not have been less helpful, informed or interested in providing a basic level of service or interest. I politely shared my experience with him. He clearly couldn't have cared less about my discomfort and disappointment. His lack of interest in me or my business could not have been more obvious. He suggested I speak to the owner who just rode in on his bike (Elon). I went to the desk, confirmed he was Elon and ask if he had a minute to which he replied, "No, I just got here, can you come back in an hour?" I replied, "No, I can't" He basically said "ok" and walked off. These days as the quality of service we receive from retailers, sadly, seems to go down by the day, I'm writing this review because we have the ability to vote with our feet and not give these retailers business they don't seem so interested in working for. Service Review: I don't rate a lot of One Stars, but what happened to me here 2 days ago will get a business a One Star every time and it reflects on the attitude of the business. When you rate One Star, a detailed explanation is required. As is our custom on Yelp, we do not mention names of employees of a business in a negative review unless we are complimenting them, but we know who they are. I have been in this store 3 or more times since they opened looking at bikes. I've been cycling since I was a child and have purchased and serviced many a bike in my time and currently own a few different types. We attend races, and clean and monitor our drive trains regularly including chain length. I "Park Tooled" my Giant Bike hybrid, Shimano HG chain on a 9-speed, 105 drive-train and after 1000 miles it was between .7 and 1 so I ordered up a replacement Shimano chain 3 weeks ago. My regular Tech is in the Valley, but I live near the Giant Store. I called them a couple of weeks ago when I ordered the chain and told the gentleman at Giant that I have a Giant 9-speed Hybrid and need a new chain installed, can you do it? He said, yes, no appointment needed, you may have to wait up to an hour depending how busy we are. Next, I asked him how much? He replied without hesitation, "ten dollars." I asked, any other fees? He said, "As long as you have a new Shimano chain, it's ten dollars, no appointment, just come in." (For those readers not familiar, $10.00 is standard reasonable in most shops in West LA to install a chain. It's 11 at REI, and between 5 and 10 in the Valley, and East of LA.) I am extremely busy these days, so it took me two weeks to get some time at work to cut out last Weds afternoon to get over there and get the chain installed. I ride over from my place to Giant and head back to service at 4 PM. Folks are very nice here as they always are when I stopped in to shop bikes, and back in service I show them the chain and I tell them that I called two weeks ago and was told it's 10 to install the chain on this 9-speed Hybrid. The woman says the tech will be right with me--he has a couple of customers before me. I say, no rush...I don't have an appointment, I will wait as long as needed for him to put the chain on today, help everyone else first. (That is way I am.) Tech comes over 10 minutes later and asks if I can leave a bike for 30 minutes, he has 2 other jobs to finish before mine. No problem at all. I will walk around and come back. Before I take off, I confirm with the tech that it's 10 to install the chain? He says, "Yes, but... (Pointing to the rear derailleur) I have a turn a screw here after putting the chain on, and that's another 10 dollars." David: "So it's $20.00 to install the chain? Tech: "Well, I am also going to have to turn a screw here (Pointing to the front derailleur) and that's going to be another 10 dollars." David: "So now it's $30.00 to install the chain?" Tech: "Well, I will need to test it out and that's another $10.00 dollars." David: "So it's $40.00 now--I was told it's $10.00 when I called in, $10 is standard." Tech: "Just let's make it $30.00, okay?" David to himself: "I am getting screwed here--exit stage left ASAP." And I told them that I don't have time to wait, and left. If this is the way they are behaving, no further discussion with management is needed. More than the money, life experience teaches one in all situations in life, when this happens, not only are you going to be overpaying, but the work invariably is going to be poor. Giant wasted my limited time off by telling me it's firmly going to be $10, and then trying to charge 3x more. I would not have written this review had they told me on the the phone it's going to cost 30 or more dollars to install a chain. A business has right to charge whatever they want for a service and I will decide based on that. But don't waste my time quoting a price (which is standard for that service), and then telling me they have to turn my screws and it will cost more. Especially on a new well maintained, first time chain replacement drivetrain. This is how a business earns a One Star review. read more

Giant of Santa Monica - An Honest Review. I bought my bike in September of 2017 from Giant of Santa Monica. The people who work there are friendly and helpful and know their bikes. I had a very good buying experience. We set up a time for fitting, and they took their time and allowed me to get comfortable in the saddle and spent a lot of time adjusting and readjusting to make sure the bike fit me properly. That was a 5-star experience. The problem came on Saturday, April 21. I noticed a strange noise coming from the back end of my bike, difficult to know exactly what was causing the problem. I took the bike in and it was immediately apparent to the employees that the bearings in my rear hub had "dried out". They said that it should be under warranty and they would most likely get a new wheel for me from Chicago by that Thursday (5 days later). They asked if I would like to leave my bike in the shop or take it home. I was told that if I wanted to continue riding the bike, it wouldn't cause any more damage to the bike or the rear wheel than had already been done and if I didn't mind the sound it was making I could continue riding it. I chose to take it home and continue riding it. That worked fine for two days. On day three, 10 miles from home, the rear wheel locked up completely. I had to carry my bike a couple of miles to get it to a place so my wife could pick me up. Maybe I was being naïve, but if I had known that was a possibility, I would never have continued riding the bike. I was never warned that that might be a possibility. At the time of this writing (23 days later), I still have no rear wheel. After checking in every few days, I was told that it was "on its way". After complaining that it was taking a very long time, I was told that they had no control of the situation and that they couldn't do anything about it because the wheel had to come from the company in Chicago. The take away for me is that the shop in Santa Monica is a nice place with friendly employees. However, I probably wouldn't buy a bike from them again knowing that I might have to wait a month to get something as simple as a wheel. read more

Doing two stars because based on Yelp, I have experienced better. I live in Monrovia, and decided to buy my bike here because of the rave reviews. They had ONE job... I go into the store on Tuesday, I was greeted by Carly. I asked about buying a commuting bike, something on the cheaper end so if it got stolen, my wallet wouldn't cry. This will be my 3rd bike that I have bought in my life, so I have a good idea of what I had in mind. Anyway, I talked to Carly and asked about commuting bikes. She referred me to two models that she had in stock, the Escape (too sporty for me for a commuter) and the Simple (too pricey for a 3 speeder). I asked Carly about the Giant Cypress and she said that she did not have that in stock and they would have to special order it from the warehouse. I told her I wanted that, and they were going to order it and build it for me and would have it done by Friday. She will call me. Done and done. Gave her my phone number and guaranteed sale on Friday. Thing is, she never called back. So I wait until Tuesday, just in case they couldn't build the bike on Friday, when they were supposedly getting it in. Nope, no call then either. Wednesday comes and I call and I asked about the Cypress. They said it JUST came in today, and they would have the bike built by Friday if I wanted to check it out. Sounded like they only received on. Did they forgot on why they even ordered that bike in the first place? So, since they forgot about a guaranteed sale, I ended up buying my bike that day from another bike store in Marina del Rey. To this day, I have yet to get any follow up call from Carly and it's been 2 weeks. Just FYI, I did not want to follow up on my original call because I figure I made it clear this was a guaranteed sale, so now since the ball was in their court, they should follow up with me, especially seeing that they got raving 5-star reviews on Yelp. I was disappointed. To the reply from Giant SM:: Sorry to hear about the news. I hope your mechanic has a speedy recovery. My review wasn't about when the bike would be built. It was more about not following up, especially when you guys knew it was a sale. Not even sure you guys knew the Cypress bike was supposed to be reserved for me. A call on the status on the bike was my only expectation since thats what i was promised. I'm sure I just got lost in the shuffle of customers but this was my experience. read more

Really amazing bike shop. I went into a few other local bike shops and had a very mediocre experience. I was looking for something around $500 and I was pretty much told to buy whatever I thought looked the best. In one shop our sales guy actually had to ask another employee if the bike we were looking at had disc or rim breaks. I didn't know what these components looked like at the time, but i now know disc breaks are nothing exotic and should have been easily identified by someone trying to sell us $700 bikes. Still, I was almost sold on the sirrus sport. That's until I stopped by Giant of Santa Monica with my girlfriend who was also looking for a similar bike. We met Willy and as a serious cyclist himself he knew pretty much everything about the entire Giant product line and modern bike components. We weren't quite ready for a road bike and mostly planed to just bike around the Santa Monica peir path. Willy ultimately pointed us towards the Giant Roam 2 and the Liv Rove 2 which we ended up purchasing. Willy fitted the bikes perfectly and even though I have severe lower back issues, I have had zero problems riding over an hour a day. Additionally, looking over the components we received for the price Giant bikes seems somewhat discounted compared to the other major brands. They also offer a free bike tuneup service roughly a month after you buy the bike. Parking is always rough down there, but in a few days they had our bikes back to us better then ever. It's been about 5 months now since my purchase and I've come to like biking far more then I ever thought I would. Wanting to take it to the next level and go a bit faster I'm now eyeing a defy advanced pro 1. I've been in and out of the shop the last few months and the entire staff is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and patient. read more
