I recently started biking in the city because of the pandemic and wanted to have my used bike taken a look at just to make sure it was in good working order. The line is long, but staff were very nice and seemed to try to help people quickly without feeling like they were being rushed. I thought I would get a full tune-up but after talking with the mechanic he did a $20 safety check that took like 10 minutes since he said it looked like my bike was in good shape. He also answered questions I had about swapping my tires out and answered a question I had about the gears. I found a good deal for a new bike that I purchased from them, when the delivery was going to be behind schedule they gave me a temp bike till mine arrived. They did the same when my new bike got in an accident just few days before the NYC Century Tour. They provided a very good Trek for free to race with while they were working on my bike. Generally, I stop by to fine tune and check different things frequently where they often do it without charge. I brought my Linus Dutchi 3-speed into Bicycle Habitat today hoping to buy new fenders. I was immediately assisted by a very friendly fellow who found the correct size for me and got things started with a friendly and competent mechanic. When I picked up the bike, the mechanic suggested I replace my brake pads, especially as we enter the rainier, slicker season so I did that, too. Off I went with the bike, but I ran into a little issue about a mile away. I called the shop and they sent the mechanic to me in order to get me moving again. They went above and beyond and I can't be more appreciative and impressed! I am the kind of cyclist who wears dresses, work clothes -- no fancy gear when I ride. I have a cup holder, baskets, and I don't rush around aggressively. Sometimes when I go into bike shops in Brooklyn I am treated with disdain and disrespect. This was not the case at Bicycle Habitat and for that I will be a loyal customer, one who cycles year-round to and from work and everywhere else. I use my bike as my primary mode of transportation. I spend whatever I need to on my bicycle so that it is road-worthy, street legal, and aesthetically pleasing to me. What a story. I went in with a request to change my brake pads, which should have taken a week at most. After about 4 weeks of not hearing a word from them (I was out of the country but didn't have any voice mails upon my return), I called and it turns out my bike had been sitting in storage with NO work done to it. Apparently the mechanic who took in my bike was let go and DIDN'T ever file a work order, so, my bike sat in storage WITHOUT ANYTHING DONE about it (HOW could management let this slip??) I went in angry and talked to a new mechanic Miguel. He was empathetic and subsequently helped me out with my problems at a reasonable cost. HOWEVER I had to wait another week to get my bike back. BUT in less than a week a piece of gear he had put on had a defect which resulted in it not functioning properly (had to have come like that due to the location of the damage). After 4 weeks of me pestering them, Miguel admitted to not calling the company for the part I needed (WHY???). I had to wait another month, and had to pay full price for a replacement part (they didn't warranty anything), and I didn't get my old parts back. Miguel said he "threw it out"... who throws out a carbon fiber brake lever and master cylinder???? I'm pretty sure he lied. And, it's still my property regardless of damaged or not. That's THEFT. There aren't very many good bike places around this area (Park Slope), and I went here hoping that this would be better than my other experiences (I've been to 4 other places in the area before)... ..WOW was I WRONG. Original Review: I purchased an $800 bicycle on Bicycle Habitat's website on May 24, 2020. I intentionally researched to see what bikes were listed as "available in store," and the website said to allow "3 days for assembly" given COVID-19-related delays. On 5/29, my partner called the store to ask for an update, and was told it would be done by the end of the weekend. On 5/30, he called again and were told that we would definitely be contacted when the bike was finished. I called again on Sunday, 6/7 and was told I'd get a call back after they investigated what was happening with my order (I never received another call). I finally sent an email and received the response that the bike we purchased wasn't available, but we could take a different one today. To their credit, they're refunding our purchase, but it should not have taken this much effort to get an answer about where our bicycle was, especially as the bike not being available was their fault, not mine. I'm sympathetic to bicycle stores being very busy right now given delays, but I'm very disappointed. If I had known the bike wasn't in stock sooner, I could have gotten a refund sooner and bought another bicycle. I really wanted to give my money to an NYC-based bike shop instead of buying online or from REI and continue to invest in my community. I also really wanted to find a local trusted bike shop for repairs and future purchases. There are a myriad of local shops in this area, but I happen to pass by this one every day to work or to the train. From the outside, the store looks magnificent. Big window that showcase the mechanics in the front and a huge selection of bikes, accessories, and parts throughout. I figured that I'd make a visit sometime, and today I did. I knew what I needed (cable cutters), but before looking through I figured to request to use a tool from one of the mechanics and was quickly shutdown because of "store policy." I thought to myself that I would just turn around and move onto the local shop that I frequent, but as I was leaving the guy asked that I park my bike outside rather than bring it in (last time I checked, this was a bike shop). As I proceed to open the door, he asks why I need the tool, I explain that I'm having issues with my cable housing. He says "it looks fine to me" but doesn't say anything else. I continue to probe and see if he has any suggestions for me, and he quickly responds by saying "your brake lever won't do what you want, it's not going to work." I leave with a bad taste in my mouth and will not recommend this place to anyone. A few minutes later at the shop I usually go to, the mechanic explains why I'm having the issues that I'm having and goes over what I need to do. In less than 5min my problem was resolved. This goes to show the arrogance that the staff (at least the mechanics) has at Bicycle Habitat. Not a local bike shop with friendly and knowledgable employees. Bad vibe. I've had a terrible experience on both occasions I've been there. The front guy doesn't know much about bikes but acts like he does. There is some internal political struggle between the sales guys and the mechanics and it show. They subvert each other at the (potential) custom's expense. Both times I went in I expected to spend a lot of money and both times I simply walk out after I was told in adamant terms things I knew to be false. I think the mechanics probably know their stuff and they carry decent brands but there's a knowledge/attitude problem that makes it impossible to buy anything from them. WIth the reputation that precedes Bicycle Habitat you'd expect the best damn bike shop ever, right? Well, I wasn't really impressed. First off I had bought a new bike frame online, and then did my research and bought all the parts I would need to make my own 'custom' bike.... with all the equipment that I chose, not what the manufacturing company threw on the bike. Whatever. Took everything there to get assembled because I assumed this would be the spot to do it in being that it was the world famous Bicycle Habitat. I dropped off the bike on a Thursday. They asked if I needed it right away, I told them it was not a rush job. They were fine with that and told me it'd be ready by Monday. I was charged 75 bucks for the labor. No problem so far. So I went Monday to picket up.... it wasn't ready at all. Nothing had been installed at all! The bike was hanging there on the stand exactly how I dropped it off 4 days before. I was pissed. I just took a subway ride to get there and nothing had been done. Now I had to take another subway ride back home. I get back home and a little while later they call me. The guy says to me that I wasn't charged the right amount. That I should have paid 150 instead of 75, and that that price would include the brake and shifter cables. I told the guy that shouldn't be necessary being that I had provided the best (and most expensive) cables currently available... not the bullshit cables he wanted to put on my custom bike. So he said he didn't know that I had provided the cables but nonetheless I was charged too little. Fine, whatever. About 3 hours later I got another call... the bike was ready. What the f**k!! They built the bike in 4 hours but didn't do anything to it in 4 days? Ridiculous. I told them I couldn't pick it up because I was on my way to work and I'd pick it up tomorrow. When I finally did get the bike... it seemed fine. I went back there 2 weeks later to get the bike fine tuned, something you gotta do after installing new cables. I was informed that I had a bent derailed hanger, it's the piece that holds the rear gear changer to the bike in case you're not sure what it is. So the piece was slightly bent and that explained why the bike was shifting 80% and not 100%. The mechanic was about to manually bend it back himself when another mechanic luckily walked by right on time and told him DONT DO THAT! He told him you can't bend back a hanger on a carbon fiber bike, you can only do it on aluminum or steel bikes. This first mechanic literally almost broke my bike. The second mechanic told me I had to contact the bike company and order a new hanger from them. Just great. So I went home, ordered it, waited two weeks to get it, and then took my bike TO ANOTHER SHOP to get the piece swapped out. I went to BAY RIDGE BICYCLE WORLD. I told him what I needed done and he informed me he didn't need the new hanger. He said all he had to do was take the bent hanger off the bike, bend it back to it's right shape by hand, and put it back on the bike... that's it. The labor cost me 8 bucks. Awesome. And now I could return the hanger I ordered that cost me 70 bucks!!!!!!! I could've saved myself so much time if I just came to the bike shop closest to me first, but i went to Bicycle Habitat because of their "stellar" reputation. Never again. I will not be going back to Bicycle Habitat anytime soon. read more

Here's the thing...they're great. I didn't intend to buy a bike from Bicycle Habitat, and full-disclosure...I didn't even buy it from this location. I test rode a number of bikes, at various shops...and TRIED to find someone at R&A to even talk to me... Then, I wound up at Bicycle Habitat Brooklyn. They didn't have the type of bike I was looking for in stock ( a couple of higher end Road bikes )...so I decided to check them out at the SoHo location ( at the suggestion of the nice assistant manager I think of the BK shop ). I finally decided on the Trek Madone...gorgeous bike, great ride, and being that it was a 2011 model, I saved a bundle of cash! Now, here's the real meat of the review...if you have ANY problems with your bike, regardless of where you bought it...GO HERE. Granted, I bought mine from BH, but it had a pretty serious issue with the shifting. It happens...so I took it in, they figured it would just be routine, but thanks to the MANY years the mechanic Miguel has under his belt in working specifically with Trek bikes, he knew within a few minutes what the real issue was, and wound up replacing my entire cable system for my shifters. No charge...and I get lifetime free adjustments on the gears and brakes from this point forward. It's a great shop...pricey, well, if you consider the bikes they carry, they're pretty much market price. You can get cheaper bikes at cheaper shops...yes...so, if that's all you are worried with, by all means... To me, they have great service and top notch mechanics. read more

So I just moved to Park Slope two months ago.. being born and raised in California did not prepare me to be the carless, poor student in Brooklyn that I am today. Biking seems to be what all the cool kids are doing, so I figured I'd see what my options were! Bicycle Habitat is conveniently located a short walk away from me, and I stopped in one day to see what they had. Let me backtrack a sec and tell you now that I am NOT even remotely educated about bikes. I was upfront with the sales rep that approached me and told him I had no idea what I wanted or what I was looking for, hah! Something to get me from point A to point B a little faster? Anyways, they showed me their options and they didn't judge me when I said I was looking for the least expensive version of anything they had. :| After checking out other places in the area, I came back to Bicycle Habitat a week or so later and ended up buying my little Trek. It wasn't available in my size, so they had to get separate parts from their other location and it arrived within two days! The woman I worked with was very knowledgeable and helpful, helping me choose a lock, lights, helmet, etc. so I was ready to get on the road in no time! Not once did I feel pressured to buy something! I've returned several times since my original purchase.. once because I thought I lost my bike.. and then the second time because I actually had my bike seat stolen -__- Luckily they showed me their options and had my new seat on within minutes! I've also bought little accessories here and there.. they have a lot of things worth checking out. Everyone is super friendly! They remembered me when I came back in.. unfortunately as the Californian girl getting initiated into Brooklyn's harsh bike world, but nonetheless, I feel welcomed here! An odd thing happened to me in Prospect Park today. I saw a woman fall off her bicycle on the hill near the lake. I stopped, called 911, and waited for the paramedics. She told the paramedics that a pedal came off the bike, causing her to crash. I had seen the pedal in the bike path, and I had brought it over to the bike. Her boyfriend was there, and I offered to store the bikes at my place so that he could ride along to the hospital. He said the bikes were on loan from Bicycle Habitat, and that they were coming to pick them up. They bikes looked brand-new, and there was no evidence on the pedal's threads that it had ripped out of the crank. Here's the odd thing. Last year, on March 19, I picked up a bike I bought from Bicycle Habitat. I walked it on the sidewalk to corner of 10th Street and hopped on. A fraction of a second later, I found myself in the middle of the street. The pedal had popped off when I stepped up on it. I had some serious road-rash on my hand and arm. I took the bike back into the store, and they offered to reattach the pedal for me. I had to convince them to get me a replacement bike, and the manager reluctantly offered me a $50 store credit. At the time, I thought about writing a review, and I now wish I had. Someone there is not doing their job, and it's putting people at serious risk of injury. I bought a pair of bike gloves and an allen wrench set here. I know for a fact I could have gotten the allen wrench set for $2 less elsewhere (sort of a big deal on something that cost $14.50), but it was a necessity purchase. I want to love this place. The service here was great. People were really friendly, and the female mechanic here helped me get my ill-fitting rear rack more properly secured, even though I didn't buy the rack or the bike at this store. However, as a non-pretentious biker, I felt as though other customers were looking at my dirty Fuji Absolute 3.0 with disgust. The cheapest bike I saw here cost $700, and it was a beach cruiser. I guess if you're in the market for a $3000 carbon frame touring bike, or a wildly expensive cruiser, this is the place for you? Mixed feelings. read more

Went in for simple fix on a coaster brake repair FAILED 2 days later after 20 miles...That is MY BRAKES FAILED as i was approaching the entrance to Williamsburg bridge on MAN side_LUCKY me. Had I got on bridge coming off at 40+ MPH with brakes failing - a near death experience. I immediately returned to BH and was told I had to wait in line for repair. I blew up! After almost dying (I ran into a wall in order to stop). Had to come back for a failed repair of the simplest nature. Instead of being directed to a MGR i was told to wait. i later demanded to speak to a MGR who calmly remedied the situation by having another mechanic do the fix...that simple. Hal the Mechanic is the only real thing there! these other snot nosed kids with tats selling 5K bikes have no empathy for real riders! They are sucking on their sales not service and can't be bothered...GIVE ME OLD SOHO !!!! read more

My review is only about the customer service; I don't currently own a bike. I needed to have tubes and tires put on the front wheels of my mom's wheelchair. I called and asked if they were capable of performing this service. The guy on the phone said, "Yes, probably, but I can't say for certain without seeing them." I live a couple blocks away, so I brought them in. The mechanic (I didn't catch his name) said it wouldn't be a problem, he took them immediately and installed them. I took less than 20 minutes and cost me $15. Everyone there was very friendly and the price was exactly what I'm used to. I'll be back in. read more

Spacious store, great selection of Trek and Specialized in the $500 to $1500 range. Most of the team here is friendly and knowledgeable and if you're looking for a new bike they won't give you a hard sell. Tip: don't go here on weekends. 30 minute wait to talk to someone and they aren't in a big rush to see who needs help. Otherwise I might give 5 stars. They stay open late on Thursday and Friday evening, try visiting then. read more

Hands down one of the best businesses in the city. I am a regular and am treated exceptionally well, but I received equally fantastic service from my first visit. The mechanics are amazing. Emily and the whole staff are knowledgeable, funny and never try to push anything on you. I bought a pair of shoes 4 months ago at the Soho location (just a wee bit too small) and they still took them back. I came in to get my brakes adjusted and had my wheel trued for free because it was required to get the wheel to turn freely. Like all bike stores they specialize in a few brands (Specialized, Trek) so if you're looking for a Felt or Pinarello or something, you'll have to buy it elsewhere, but this is the store to establish a long-term relationship with. read more

Despite them getting ready to close, they told me to come by and they would see what they could do...the bike was repaired within 15 minutes. Prices are very reasonable. I knew the original store in SoHo from years ago, and the SoHo location had always served my needs well. And so to have the opportunity of Bicycle Habitat in Brooklyn... Oh well, this is tremendous! I bought a brand new bicycle this afternoon, and the sales guy (Jimmy) who helped me is super nice, and he is very knowledgeable about bicycles, and the sizing of the bike. I kept him busy for nearly an hour, trying almost every different brand of the particular type of bike I wanted. He never wavered for a second, and he courteously shared his sage tips with respect to the different nuances of the different manufactures. I will say that I wound up spending more money than I originally budgeted for my bike, but I am completely happy with my new bicycle, and I'm very happy with the service I received from Bicycle Habitat Bike Shop in Park Slope ~ Thanks guys! read more

So I decided to check out Bicycle Habitat on 5 Ave in Park Slope.. Was really impressed! They have a wide selection of bikes and accessories. The staff are all pretty terrific. I first spoke with Richard who asked what I was looking to do with a bike, commute, leisure,race, etc. Richard then proceeded to find the bike for me, at the price requested, and since my bike had to be " built/assembled", I had to come back for it which was fine. I put a refundable 50.00 deposit down and was on my way. I came back and spoke with Jim ( Richard) was not there, who showed me the bike, which was a different bike but similar color, and features. I was a bit disappointed as I liked the color of the bike I chose, but Jim explained everything about the bike, and I was hooked. I took the bike for a test ride, and decided it was mine! Although this bike was over my price range, I bought it! Bought helmet and accessories, and left the store with those items, and came back the next day for my bike. Jim was very knowledgeable, and patient, and answered the many questions I had. The store gets busy over the weekend( expected), but seemed less so during the week(Tuesday). Large store with huge selection of bikes! Definitely recommend, will be back for my tuneups as well!! read more

Really helpful people. I bought my bicycle (which I love) from them. In retrospect I did notice that they're a bit on the pricey side. When doing some comparisons of what I bought and what other stores in NYC were offering I noticed I could've gotten a better deal for my bicycle and gear. But ultimately that's my fault. So here's the deal, I really like the "manager" of the shop and that they aren't pushy. He's taken a lot of time with me to answer questions and get me setup for city biking. I picked the first bike I wanted to try and it was all wrong. The second bike I tried he chose based on what I told him I was looking for and it felt spot on and I bought it. I do think that the people working on the bikes could use more attention to detail. When I picked-up my new bike the chain fell-off and locked-up. Luckily they were still open and fixed it right away. Later I discovered that the seat was very lose and bobbling all over the place. I went back for a basket and had them fix the seat, only to find when I picked-up the bike that the brackets for the basket had pealed paint and the metal was exposed and would easily rust. So I had to leave the bike again to have it resolved. It's a brand new bike, I just expect more attention to detail and for it to be treated like a new machine since it's an investment and a brand new one at that. read more

Just got home from a cleat fitting for a new pair of shoes and Libby was a dream to work with - patient, an expert at what she was doing and adjusted several other parts of my bike that made a huge difference while spinning on the trainer. Even noticed my rear axle was a bit bent and swapped one out for me on the spot. Huge selection of bikes, accessories and whatnot too and the mechanics are great. I'm so grateful to the mechanics and owner at this bike shop and truly 10/10 recommend coming here for help with your bike. I bought a used bicycle on Craigslist that looked fine but started acting funny once I started riding it. I brought it in and they did a really thorough job of figuring out what was wrong with it (previous owner had done some very sketchy welding involving the bottom bracket) and showing/explaining everything to me. Last week I bought a new bike and it arrived with bent seat stays and a pinched droupout, so I took it into Bicycle Habitat and once again they were not just extremely thorough with the analysis and repair, but also really communicative about what was wrong and why, and what impact I could expect the issue to have in the future. The pricing for the labor was really fair, and on top of that every person I've talked to in the shop has been so friendly and helpful. Good selection of reliable gear/accessories, too. Waited in line for 30 mins, just to get to the front of the line and basically be turned away. I came specifically to buy a bike that day. I have not ridden a bike since I was a kid (now in my 20s), so I am not sure the different types and what I would prefer. I needed help in which kind of bike would be best for me and guy that helped me (maybe in his 50s) was OFFENDED that I didn't know the difference between all the bike terminology he was using. I explained I haven't ridden a bike since I was a child and he started saying "it's the difference between a Toyota and Ford"... how is that supposed to help me? I understand I could not go in the shop due to COVID, but it would have been helpful if he could he have brought one out for me to try, or even just showed me pictures of the kinds so I could pick. Gosh I love this location. I came here to purchase a road bike when the soho shop did not have my size in stock. This shop did and I was happy it forced me to visit. I purchased a bike from the shop and also went for a bike fit. The store gives pretty good customer service. Leading their friendly staff, the manager is pretty awesome. She takes the time to answer all of your questions and never shies away from getting you that extra part or tube you might need.
