We need neighborhood bike shops. Biking has been growing for years and we lost a few during the pandemic. This shop has their stuff together. Quick and understanding service at a reasonable price. My son's "brake noodle " had broken (yes, a broken noodle), and it was quickly diagnosed and taken in for repair. We went to brunch and got a friendly call less than 60 minutes later to come pick up the fixed bike. The repair total - $15. My son said his whole braking system felt better and it's likely they even tuned both of them up. Stop on by and have confidence you'll get taken care of properly. read more

Don't bring your high-end bike here. Said they didn't have tools for hydraulic disc brakes....after my ride was there for an entire week. I purchased a tune-up with basic maintenance. The "mechanic" told me there wasn't much to do so ...he didn't do much. When I asked what exactly did i pay for if no service was rendered, I got a sorry look and the promise of the owner calling me the next day to discuss a store credit (worthless due to the anemic inventory) or refund. I received no such call. I took it to another shop....front AND back disc brakes needed alignment, brake system needs to be emptied and refilled. read more

When I asked guy working there about the parts he put on being crooked and rubbing against tire he said, "it looks fine to me ". This place is a joke. This place is fine. It is not fancy. It is very analog, very lo-fi. It's great if you live within a few blocks of this location. Do you want your basic bike issues repaired? Yes. Do you want an air pump hose you can hook your tires to right on the sidewalk? Yes. Do you care if the register hasn't been tidied up since the 80s? No. Do you want to buy your first bike here? Maybe...if it's used/vintage and out front, you might get a decent beater bike. Repairs, tune-ups, etc., are fine here. If your bike is an upscale fixed wheel, or made in the Netherlands, or state-of-the-art fancy bike, my advice is do not bring it here, because your expectations will be on par with your bike. In other words, don't bring your Bentley to the neighborhood mom-and-pop generic car lot. What were you thinking? And yes, there is that guy who will turn you away half an hour (!) before closing and tell you to "come back tomorrow at 11 a.m.!" on a weekday, as if you are a member of the Extreme Leisure Club and just have loads of time to keep coming back when it suits him. I own an old bike. It is American (I know!).I have had tires and innertubes replaced. Recently, I brought in new gear that the staff hadn't seen before, and instead of being curious, they seemed annoyed. Then they settled into the challenge of helping me out. My suggestion: ask for Joanne right off the bat. My experience is if she can't figure it out, which is RARE as Joanne knows A LOT, she will let you know and ask you how you want to proceed. read more

The people working there didn't even know the prices for the basic lock and helmet I went to purchase (they had to look them up on a handwritten page of prices- what is this 1942?) A one man bike shop! New and used bikes, also repairs and tune-ups. I brought my vintage bike here with a flat to be changed. Anthony, the owner/proprietor/whatever was really excited about my 10-speed Rudge. He kept telling me how this bike was a historical treasure and you can't even put a price on it. Not sure how genuine he was being...he upsold me to do a complete cleanup and overhaul of the bike for $70 something, and I reluctantly agreed. In the end, he did a GREAT job and i'm really glad i agreed to the full service package--unlike some of the high-end shops, bringing a beat-up old bike here wasn't awkward and he had the right inner tube in stock. He powerwashed the bike and got rid of lots of dirt. He oiled all the bearings and gears, replaced the flat tire, rewrapped the handlebars and added handlebar-ends, filled up the tires etc. Well, the bike rides beautifully -- it's just like new (or what i imagine the bike to be like when it was 'new' -- i wasn't born yet..), so in the end it was money well spent and i came away a very happy customer. But minus one star for the awkward pick-up shenanigans he pulled. I brought the bike in on a saturday and agreed to pick it up the following saturday (i work late and knew i wouldn't be able to come during in the week). Anyway, on Wednesday at 5pm, he calls to say my bike is ready early(!) and oh yeah, he's leaving friday morning to go on vacation for a week. I needed the bike for the weekend and was busy thursday night, so i basically had to bail on work at 5pm and pick it up. Not the most professional thing to do to a customer.. read more

First off, I have to say I'm baffled that this store has any less than 4 stars!! I have had two bike problems fixed at this place.... I was pleasantly shocked by how inexpensive their work was! Beyond fair prices for fixes. I personally believe that they could charge higher rates if they wanted but don't do so because they have integrity and don't want to take advantage of other bike riders in need of maintenance. The owner and staff (who might also be the owners?) are so knowledgable and treat you courteously. You are not made to feel at all uneasy or less than for asking any questions. They seem to have a true passion and interest in bikes which is an additional bonus. Nowadays, there are so many new bike shops in brooklyn but this one is old school and they get the job done without some shiny glass pimped out modernized store front like many of the newer ones. In fact I first came to use this store out of convenience because I lived in the neighborhood but I have since moved about 4 miles away but both times since my move that I have needed bike assistance, I bring it right to them. Took my wife bike in for a tune up, they were professional and took care of everything the way they said they would. Bike was ready on time. Six weeks later someone hit my wife's bike while parked bending the wheel. Thought something was wrong with the brakes, took it back to bike shop and they straightened wheel out for me (usually for small fee but took care of it for free). This is the best bike shop in Park Slope. I realize it's in Carroll Gardens, but when I have a problem with my bike, one preventing me from riding it, I walk my bike from Park Slope to Court Street because I can count on these guys to take care of it. In fact, I'm going to walk over their in a minute to get a new front wheel and I'm confident they'll be $10 cheaper than anywhere else in Park Slope. To be fair, I've never tried buying a bike there or getting a tune up there. But I go there for new tubes and new wheels and new gear wires and brake pads. There prices for parts are reasonable, plus they don't charge for labor. I feel like every other bike store I go to, they nickel and dime you, charging for every little thing. Here I feel like they're honest and will try to work with you, making minor adjustments, such as aligning a derailer, for free. read more

This place suffers from a lack of competition. We rented two bikes. The rate is 30$ a day which I think is a bit steep. Locks and helmets were not included and were an additional 5$ each. Guess what, for that price you can rent a car! When we were there, another customer complained that the store hadn't opened on time, but one hour late. We were there at the posted open time, they were closed, so we just came back later. Anyway, clear signs of lack of competition. read more

Hi. I have a bike about 10 years old. I'm looking to sell it. Only problem it has is one of the breaks dont work. Do you buy old used bikes?

I've been here a few times so far. The place is a grungy old-school bike shop that does repairs, offers bike rentals, and they buy/sell used and new bikes as well (the selection of new bikes is pretty limited though). The owner, JoAnn, is the only person I've ever seen or dealt with here, she's a bit rough around the edges but gets down to business and seems to know her stuff. Every time I've been here she's managed to fix me up right on the spot without me having to drop it off. With all that being said, I do have one major concern coming here though. Last time I came here I was coming in at the same time as a girl who had her bike "fixed" here, she was returning very upset that something was still very broken with her bike. JoAnn explained to her that what she had come in to get fixed had nothing to do with what she was now complaining about. The girl said the part that is now broken wasn't broken when she first came in and JoAnn just told her that it must have been because it had nothing to do with the part they had just fixed for her and the girl just left upset with a still broken bike saying she'd be bringing it elsewhere. I shrugged the interaction off as just an ignorant bike owner. That was until the EXACT same thing happened to me. Now that leaves one of three conclusions to be made, none of which work in favor of The Bike Shop and that is why I'll only use them on an emergency basis from now on. Option 1 is the most skeptical and damning. Something very shady is going on where they are intentionally doing something to people's bikes to ensure return business. Option 2 is more likely but still quite disappointing and that's that they're doing rushed shotty work and/or using low quality parts that inadvertently are resulting in further bike issues down the road. Option 3 is probably most likely if I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt here. That's that they aren't bothering to take a good enough look at people's bikes to see what is really the problem(s) and are and properly diagnosing and fixing all of the issues. Given the somewhat surly service and not much patience to explain things to people, I would say this is probably the case but still doesn't explain how within a one day period they had two customers 90% sure they had a damaged piece on their bike that wasn't previously an issue. C'est la vie, will be heading back to Park Slope for my non emergency bike needs from now on. read more

This shop is run by one guy, and he's always working on a cycle in the back, so you have to ask him a question instead of just waiting. Once you get his attention, though, Anthony is great. I brought my 70's Atala Grand Prix in to fix a flat and possibly add a brake lever on the top of my drop bars. He didn't have the right size lever for my bike, but begged me not to change the bars and ruin the classic lines of the cycle and offered to order the right size for me. He was very complementary and also helped me pick out a helmet and a lock. Overall, he fixed the flat right there, was great to talk to, and wasn't judgemental about my having an old ride and wanting to keep my costs down. I'll be coming to the bike shop again for a full tune-up when my budget allows. read more

Decided on an after work bike ride and found myself in Carroll Gardens (a 20 minute bike ride from my house). All of a sudden, BOOM! Complete flat tire. Looked up on yelp and luckily I was only 2 blocks from this bike shop. The gate was already down on the window but the door was still unlocked so I took my chances and went inside. It was about 7:20 when I went in and was told they closed at 7. I gave him a pitiful look and told him I had a flat and the man working agreed to fix it, despite having been closed for 20 minutes. I have a 1950's Sears bike that was in need of a special seat post (it's a narrow seat post in comparison to "newer" bikes) and new seat (old seat was vandalized). None of the bike shops I called or went by had the narrow post, but I was delighted to randomly pop into the Bike Shop and find that they had a post to fit! While I went home to get my bike, the mechanic set up the post, clamp (luckily they had that special size too) and a seat and within 10 minutes had it installed on my bike. I thought for sure that I was going to have to say goodbye to the Sears because the narrow seat post is so hard to find. The Bike Shop saved my Sears! I am so grateful and the mechanic was so awesome and nice. Not at all judgmental of my rusty bike and my desire to keep it on the road. It cost $30 to have my dreams come true. I easily would have paid double. Really great place. Highly recommend. read more

Stay away from this place-- save your money and look elsewhere. I took in my bike for a simple tune-up; align tires and brakes, address a noise and drag coming from the crankshaft. Seemingly pedestrian for a bike shop but, low and behold, as I rode my bike home after having picked it up, I noticed that the front wheel had not aligned nor had the noise and drag from the crankshaft been addressed. To their credit, they offered to take the bike back but I'm not convinced of their abilities. The two bike techs who I've encountered there seem detached from the realm of customer service. They had a nonchalant attitude when I dropped off my bike so I'm not surprise, now, that I received my bike in the condition I did. It's the bad bodega of bike shops. Dirty, unkempt shop with help behind the counter who strike you as they'd rather be elsewhere. I'm not a bike snob but do expect my bike to be repaired by pros. These folks are not pros. read more

This is what a neighborhood bike shop should be - great service, friendly people, and reasonable prices. We brought my girlfriend's cruiser in after it had been sitting outside all summer and fall, unprotected. The brakes and gear shifter cables were complete seized up. Joe from The Bike Shop worked a miracle for far less than we expected to pay. I will be coming back here. For basic repairs, give them a try before you go to one of the fancier rip off shops. read more

This is by far my favorite shop in the neighborhood. Joana, the manager, is the kindest person ever and she is totally knowledgeable for everything that concerns bikes. My partner and I both bought our bikes here and prices are just so much cheaper than every other bike shop I've been to in New York Since the first bike I bought was slightly too small for me, after a couple of weeks Joana called me back and told me to go and have a look at another used bike that she just got and that was fitting much better. I exchanged the bike I had bought from her for this other one that I literally adore. The two guys that work with her are really nice too, but if you want to buy a bike or need an important repair make sure you talk with her directly, and if she is not in the shop, just come back when she's in. read more

Its a pretty good little place because you look at it from the street and don't expect much. Overall they have done a good job the couple of times I was there. They are not generally very friendly, but the work is good. More importantly it is completed when they say it was going to be completed. I dropped off my 40-year-old Raleigh Sports bike here and was completely happy with their service and the results. The price was not bad either. I was charged $59.95 for a tune-up which included work on the gears, brakes and affixing a rear reflector to the bike. They also told me there is a 30-day warranty. I made an extra long trip over to the far side of the neighborhood to the The Bike Shop on Court in order to avoid the grouchy guys in the shop closer to me, and I'm so glad I did. Everything was on the level, reasonable and clearly explained. I bought an excellent used bike from them after testing out several of the bikes in the shop. Really bad experience. Wanted to drop my commuter bike off for a basic service, so popped in to see when might be possible. They were booked four days ahead... Fair enough. But apparently could not book my bike in without seeing it for an assessment. Could not say what type of services they had.
