I just wanted to give a huge thank you to GNO Cyclery! I've had this bike ever since I got out of high school in the early '90s. We've been through a lot together and it's been with me ever since. Through countless moves, relationships and different careers. I never realized the value of what I had until these last 6 months. This bike has become my daily ride pretty much every day rain or shine. Those 21 miles plus are my daily zen time. I get a lot of thinking, get in the zone and really enjoy nature in that hour and a half ride. It's been very therapeutic for me. Definitely received 5-star service when I brought my bike in to have them take a look. I was in an accident involving the streetcar tracks about a month ago and my front wheel wasn't lining up straight. I had called earlier, and when I got there, the guy recognized me and adjusted the bike so that everything was lining up right. He put some air in my tires and told me I was good to go. Granted, the repair didn't require parts or anything, but they didn't charge me for anything. And I was self-conscious about my bike because I had taken it to other shops and had people tell me that a lot of work needed to be done on it and that I was ripped off (I got the bike from Craigslist), but this guy at GNO didn't give me that type of condescending attitude, which I really appreciated. read more

Went in there to by a bicycle trailer for my baby daughter. As I rolled up the sidewalk on my Mango Beach Cruiser, the employee opened the door and let me bring my bike right in. They only offered two types of trailers so my choice was easy enough. That being said, the guy helping me (I think his name was Micky) was very knowledgable and nice and even hooked the trailer up and gave me some pointers. Very helpful. I'll definitely go back. Cons: Not many. There was one guy in there working who was a huge biker snob. Also, they do not offer military discounts, but this will not impact me returning. A massive, over-priced pile of annoyance. The sales guys alternated between aggressive talk-downers and passive melt-into-the-wall ignorers. Prices are higher here than most of the other bike shops in New Orleans, and I can't imagine why the casual rider would even shop here. The store is kind of tiny, which can't be terrible. But the stock is mostly geared towards racing bikes with the token little kid bike and casual rider bike thrown in. I mean, they carry Electra Townies (which is good), but they charge way more for them than the other Electra shops in town. What would be a $650 purchase at another bike shop turns into an $800 bike here. That's a lot of scratch for people who are biking instead of buying gas, you know? I suppose if you are a serious rider, this is the ideal place to be. There are racks of energy goo, spandex clothing, and lots of super fast carbon bikes (or whatever bike racing people ride). Those are the really 'spensive bikes, too. It's fun to look then get sticker-shock when you realize that you've just been squeezing the tires of a $3000 bike. There was one sort of decent salesguy, but everyone else either did the "lalalala, I can't see you fat girl" routine or the "you don't know enough about bikes to even talk to me" thing. I felt dumb for asking as many questions about bikes, but I'm learning. Would I shop there again? No. Of course not. No matter how convenient the location is, this is not the shop for me. Accessibility notes: Door pushes in so customers with mobility devices can enter without assistance, and there is a ramp on the curb. One small section of the store has stairs. No braille signage. Store is small and can get loud so potential issues for hard-of-hearing customers. GNO sells adult tricycles and training wheels for adult bicycles for additional stability. read more

I figured ladybug and I could use a bike I had recently acquired and take it to ride in Audubon park and around the neighborhood. I haven't done any bike riding since I was in elementary school and was leader of a Bike Gang. We rolled pretty gansta in our hyper color tees and acid washed jeans in the 'Sip (Mississippi). After buying a baby seat on CL, I needed to get a rack and a hemet to get this show on the road. I headed up to GNO to purchase the required parts. With my trusty sidekick we were cheerfully greeted at the door by a bearded, young salesman. I explained to him what I needed and expected him to just point it out and let me go pick them out myself. That's what usually happens, to me anyway. But, no sir. He insisted that we make sure that the rack I wanted was what would work with the seat. And I quote, " I COULD just sell ya any old rack, but I can't promise you that it will work, let me make sure". Wow! I didn't even buy the baby seat from them, so that was beyond what I expected. He also measured my ladybugs head, and helped us try on her helmet so we were sure it was a perfect fit. He also offered to put the rack on my bike for me, which I may go back next week and get them to do that, since I just discovered that putting the rack on is way more complicated than I anticipated. Here's the clincher. He was kind enough to help me with my bags to the car. He was a real sweetheart! I did find the prices to be a little more than what I was expecting. But, it is true that I don't know squat about bikes and bike parts, so take that for what is worth. I was going into this with the idea that it was going to be an inexpensive endeavor, and it was 80$ or so, for a little back rack and a kids helmet. That won't keep me from being a return customer though. I don't mind paying a few dollars more for great service. They easily have the kindest, most helpful sales people I have ever encountered. I will definitely recommend them to anyone that needs anything to do with biking. read more

I paid GNO $25 to re-assemble my bike, having mailed it from my home in Dallas to New Orleans. I walked 2.5 miles to the shop because the bike is my only transportation. They brought out the bike and told me that the back tube was flat - they wanted more money to do a simple and cheap patch job. Worst of all, they wanted to keep the bike longer to make the repair. They never bothered to call me to authorize a repair in advance, nor were they helpful at all. I coerced them to pump up the tire as best they could and I rode home. I'll patch it myself. So this morning I was looking to buy a new bike. I read the various yelp reviews on the larger stores, and saw that for most of the major stores, folks either loved them or hated them. I had dealt with GNO cyclery before and was somewhat surprised at some of the low ratings. So, in assuming that you can't please all of the people all of the time, and some folks do have negative experiences that can be corrected, I went to GNO Cyclery to buy my new bike. I rode out 30 minutes later with the new bike, light, basket, odometer installed. Granted, I basically knew what I wanted in terms of the bike, I found the staff very knowledgable, not pushy, and very professional. So, I conclude that some of the negative comments are individual negative experiences that do not characterize the business, perhaps some customers having a bad day or who are in fact bike snobs themselves. Regardless, GNO cyclery is nearby, well-stocked, reasonably priced for the New Orleans urban market, and I will continue to support until I have a negative unresolvable experience. read more

I've had to come here a handful of times because of bike issues. I first heard about this place through a friend that it was a good store with nice people and closest to my house. I brought in the bike that i bought online to get fine tuned. They took my bike quickly and promised it back to me in a few days. But I told them I'll be back in a week because of my schedule. Great! Picked it up, they adjusted the seat, and helped me pick out a bike basket and install it. Here is gripe #1: they charged me $4 to install my bike basket. They just put it on the bill, and didn't tell me about it until I looked at the receipt. oh well, it's only $4. then a week later, my rear axle broke on my online bike. I blame UPS for that because the box that it arrived in was a sorry mess. Back to GNO. I pick out a new bike, grilled them on my warranty and satisfied, rode out on a new bike. They offer 6 month of additional coverage from the factory warranty. The bike was much more expensive than what i wanted to pay, but because I don't have a car to hunt around town for a new bike and i needed it asap, i just sucked it up. that was gripe #2, the prices. Gripe #3 was when my went home and installed the bike basket onto the new bike, i noticed the wire that was holding it up was starting to fray. yep, a week later, it broke. I think I'm going to go to Ace Hardware for a new wire because I'm afraid GNO will over charge me for the wire, and charge me labor too. Overall, other than the price (nothing is cheap in that place.) it's a great place. the people are nice and helpful. no pressure selling. They didn't salivate when i told them i needed a new bike, and stood there patiently while i stood in front of the bikes trying to decide what to get. not the largest selection of the bike shops I've ever been to, but good enough. read more

I was really under-whelmed by my experience here. Knowing a thing or two about bikes, I've never had any repairs done here... I've only been once to buy some new tires for my track bike. While the staff is friendly they are friendly in that cell-phone salesman way, gelled hair and alternative rock muisc, etc. Well, they didn't have the tire size i wanted (25s) only 23s, so I went to look at the selection. The dude was way too overly helpful and it felt like he was just trying to get a sale out of me. He kept spouting mis-truths about the tires such as "this one has kevlar in it" (I know for a fact it doesn't andI looked it up online when I got home just to double check) and sprinkling on the fear with: "These are really the nice ones if you don't want to get a blowout" (and by nice you mean the most expensive.) I ended up buying some decent tires for a slightly higher than normal price. I can't remember how much they were selling their tubes and patches for tho, but it was outrageous. I said no thanks to $8 tubes. I guess there was a bunch of Trek stuff here, so if you're a yuppie and into that sort of weekend roadbiking, full on kit and "X-Treme" things, this is the shop for you. read more

I guess it pays to be a Trek man... Unlike the other reviewers of GNO Cyclery, I have had nothing but great experiences with GNO. I bought my first Trek 820 from them in 1997 or 1998 and since I lived along the Lakefront back then, would put in some serious miles and would bring it back to the shop for tune-up/maintenance every 6 - 8 months. Even when I damaged the bike and needed repairs they were prompt and if I had an issue they fixed it, no questions asked. Fast forward to a couple of months ago, my old but still cruising 820 was stolen so I went and bought a Trek 3700 - only heavy duty, abuse-taking frames for me - the staff had no problem with me returning the 18 inch frame for the 19.5 inch frame after a week of riding (well, I mean I did have to pay the cost delta!). Still all good... Earlier in the week, I was cruising to the gym when the pedal arm broke from the crankshaft - "cheap *ss, made in China piece o' crap", I kept muttering as I stroked my foot along the ground to propel myself home. Called up GNO, they said bring it in. Brought it in the next day and they fixed it on the spot. Took someone else's bike off the rack and fixed mine, right then and there. No bill, no nothing - just fixed it. Kudos to the owner - who is always there and whose name escapes me at the moment - and the staff who have always been helpful to me... read more

I had been here a couple of times but I think my most recent experience is indicative of how I feel about it. I got my bike repaired for a simple derailler replacement and had two different experiences. The first guy I met was kind of a dick. He just had a pretentious attitude about himself and the situation i got in... "that denies the laws of physics... you HAD to have hit something.." i almost didnt get my bike fixed here cause of him, but honestly, i just wanted to have my bike back and ready and it was later in the afternoon so I let them take it in I came back two days later (they did fix it by the next day which was a real plus... the aforementioned douche told me it might not be till next wednesday) and I had a much better experience... the guy (I think it may have been the owner) was really friendly and helpful and not in the least prententious.. he saw me as an equal and we even talked about being in the bike business since i've considered getting into myself in the future so what can I say about GNO? basically what most everyone else has said... some of the staff are stuck-up bike snobs, some aren't... it is a little less neighborhoodly than other shops in the city, but it is geared towards those who ride for sport (i like sport and leisure but probably more leisure) so I kind of get that... overall, it's alright read more

I gotta say so far I've really enjoyed being a customer at GNO. Knowledgable staff that doesn't have a seatpost stuck up their ass like most LBS I've been too. I'm not a crazy pro roadbiker but I certainly don't have my training wheels any more, so I know what I think I want and they're totally approachable about what I actually need. I'm planning to do a complete rebuild of my bike and they have had every part I've come to buy so far. They know the local area and they recommended some good tires to prevent weekly blowouts. The mechanics were even friendly and took the time to explain the features of my purchase. The staff is definitely more full of personality than any other kind of service/retail outfit, but that's what makes a bike shop so damn great. I also talked to someone who I believe was the owner/manager and they also were extremely friendly and took the time to explain what parts my old bike needed and some basic bike theory. I've been multiple times to GNO cyclery and have absolutely no idea how anyone has had a problem here. Yes, it's more expensive but they're located right off Carrollton - you want cheaper stuff? Go to Metairie where the rent is 1/3 of the price. Their staff has ALWAYS been nothing but kind and has always gone above and beyond to help. My most recent visit, the employee talked me out of buying something I didn't need because I already had something else that served the same purpose. And to address the comments about the employees judging their customers based on appearance: I've come both in my work clothes (I am a teacher) and my weekend clothes (tie dye shirt and shorts) and have never been treated differently. Shame on y'all for claiming otherwise. read more

I came in the store to buy a bike and have it assembled that same day. The guy tried selling me an Electra out of the box but told it it would be a few days to assemble it- fine with me (I'd rather wait and have it professionally assembled) But when I asked if I could take another bike- the exact same style and brand- out for a test ride before I paid for the bike the man refused to let me ride it in the parking lot- needless to say I left without purchasing one. That's like going to a clothing store and not being allowed to try on the pants before you pay for them. He said that it was too rainy out... The parking lot was bone dry and I had been to 2 other bike shops that day that allowed to test the bikes. Story short- rude sales person! Over priced bikes (which you can get online AND take to a much friendlier bike shop to have assembled). I went to another place and they told me that they profile their customers. I had a tie dye tee shirt on? Anyways, I offered to leave my backpack (which contained three times the cash than the bike costs) and they gave me a short response. Assholes. I had a hard time finding a bike for my daughter in the color she wanted. We found a place in Lafayette who said they had it in stock, so we drove there to get it, only to be told it was in a box and they couldn't get it ready for us while we waited. So I called around and the owner of GNO Cyclery answered the phone even though they were closed. They had one left of that color in the bike we wanted, so he put our name on it without requiring we pay for it over the phone. I live in Baton Rouge, so had one of my parents go over and pick it up for me. Only complaint I had was not being able to pay for it with my card over the phone, so I had to pay my parents back for it. The owner was super nice about everything and it was a good experience. And of course, my daughter loves the bike! I will definitely consider them again for future bike needs. read more

I'm glad I didn't look at these reviews before stepping foot in the store or I would've wanted to go somewhere else. I'm not quite sure where the bike snobbery comments come from but I didn't experience that at all. My first trip in was to get a feel for what kind of bike I should purchase given my budget and intended use. Ryan went above and beyond for me; he was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and most importantly, he wasn't pushing any one model or brand on me. He was concerned with which bike felt the best to me and adjusted the two bikes that I test rode to make sure the fit was just right. My second trip was the very next day, and I knew Ryan wasn't working that day so I picked right back up where I left off previously with Jordan. He was just as friendly and knowledgeable as Ryan and he closed out the deal for me. We had to order the bike but I purchased all the accessories (a helmet, bike rack for the car, bike basket, front and rear bike lights, and locks) with a 10% discount on all of those items. My bike will be in soon, and I'm so looking forward to getting it! Not to mention the 6 month service warranty they offer is pretty sweet. This place is definitely worth every penny you spend. Getting a good bike is an investment, one that could last you a lifetime, and GNO makes sure that your money is well spent. Came in looking for new tires and the staff was incredibly helpful. I told them I wanted road tires that could withstand riding around the rough streets of the city, as my last set did not last well at all. The employee helping me listened to my complaints and recommended gator skins because that's what he uses and he does similar routes as I do. So he hooked me up and even gave me a good deal on them! I've been here a few times to buy various bike accessories and man, is this place great. Someone opens the door for you to come in and you're greeted immediately. I don't think I've ever had to ask for help; someone has always been there before I got the chance to. Today, I only wanted a helmet and I got the best service (other than the employee's dry attitude, but I guess that's just him). I'm surprised by all the one star reviews, though I've never had them repair my bike. But my boyfriend goes there to repair his bike and he swears by it. To each his own. Hands down the best bike shop in New Orleans. I had a catastrophic frame break on my Trek mountain bike and they bent over backwards to try to find a replacement swing arm, but it didn't fit. They continued to look for a replacement frame, but in the end, the search came up empty. They didn't have to do that, but they did. Billy gave me a great deal on a 2016 Trek X-Caliber 9 and am beyond happy with my purchase. Thanks to Billy, Skip, Chris and all the other great employees of this bike shop. I was very pleased with my time in GNO Cyclery! Only a 15-minute walk from my house, it was quick and easy to get my bike tuned up. My bike is one of those POS cheap bikes you can pick up from Walmart so I was kind of worried about being judged when I dragged it into this super fancy bike shop. It was sad rusty and gross but my chain kept falling off and the guys there were happy to help! I dropped it off on a Tuesday and the guy said they potentially wouldn't be able to fix it until Friday. Low and behold, I get a call the very next day that it's ready for pickup! I felt like I was getting a brand new bike, it was super clean and they were even able to get some of the rust off! The whole thing only cost about $55 altogether. She rides like a dream now and I will definitely be back for any of my future bicycle related needs. read more

I was greeted at the door by a friendly employee (the same bearded employee of prior positive posts, actually!) who went above and beyond in making sure I got what I needed and wanted. I went in with the specific intent of purchasing a bike lock and an air pump. They did not try to oversell me - pressure me - or talk down to me. I purchased the items, and had to return the next day for some additional things that I hadn't realized that I needed - I was again greeted by the bearded gent and taken care of quite well! If you know anything about bikes and you get service here you are not wise. The service is very slow, maybe a week before you get back on the road. They don't know much in the front of the house because I came in to get a bolt that had broken on my saddle and the service guy wanted to beat me down that it fit on my bike when I repeatedly said it didn't. The part itself was a cheap insignificant bolt but the one they gave me was the super cheap version. I know they were trying to make a buck but to not let me know that I could pick up the appropriate bolt at any hardware store I thought to be dishonest at best. I mean you want my $1.25 so bad that you can't just say go to a hardware store and get the one that fits? To be honest most of the bike shops in this town are the same way. read more

GNO Cyclery has got to be on of the more tin-eared establishments I've encountered in my 40-odd years of frequenting bike shops. In the 4-5 visits over the last 6 weeks to their shop on Carrolton Ave, they have regularly managed to surprise me negatively even tho I thought they'd already lowered my expectations to sea level. They're not obviously _rude_, just regularly fail to extend themselves to a guy who wants to buy a $650 bicycle. Too bad. I've actually gone over there twice to buy the specific bicycle, but can't quite bring myself to give money to people who don't seem to want it. They seem like nice people, just a bit slow on the uptake. Low key is nice, but anything can be overdone. Walking away from me saying "come back when it's dry" for the test ride when I just rode my bike over? Really? All the "hail fellow well met" charm of a fence post. Too bad.
