I have been looking for a great bike shop for tune-ups / repairs. I found it in BicycleSpace. I have two bikes that had significant problems (like broken bottom bracket). I've ventured to several bike shops and I keep coming back to Bicycle Space. Today, I had a bike fitting with Becky. Patient, friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Did I mention knowledgeable? I couldn't have asked for a better person to answer my thousands of questions. Unfortunately, I didn't walk out with my bike. I've been a customer for various small bike issues/service at all of the previous Bicycle Space locations (broken wheels, brakes, BBs, etc.). Unfortunately I will no longer be a customer after my terrible customer experience with Rob. I haven't been back to the shop in about 1.5 years, but after another friend recently purchased a bike from the shop and shared a story of an extremely angry and unprofessional employee, I dusted off my previous draft email and decided to share. I had previously decided to not post a negative review in light of the bike shops that had closed in the area around that time. However, the terrible customer experience and verbal phone aggression has never left my mind. Hearing that it's still going on is unacceptable and I would recommend that you take your business to another local bike shop. I've commuted daily all year long for over 12 years, so I am not a beginner by any means and typically only head to a shop if an unfortunate issue happens en-route of commuting or something beyond my repair skill set. I brought in my bike due to what was seemingly a BB type issue. The bike which I had been riding for a year developed a flex that was something reminiscent a warn out BB. You could feel the give and the bike had an extra rock in it (similar to when I've had broken axels and loose headtubes, where the bike just has an extra give to it). As this suddenly appeared in my daily commuter, I wanted to get to the root of the issue. I described this to the service employee and finding the bike model and online part numbers for him, I left the store understanding that there was an issue and that they'd look at it. I did not receive any type of update until 33 days later. After a week, I just wanted to see what would happen as I was riding another commuter and was not in a hurry to get that one back. I took the call that i received 33 days later at the end of the day at the office and was angerly and aggressively talked down to with the hinting of that I didn't know what I was talking about and that he had no idea why my bike was in the shop and was clearly frustrated. The tone was so bad that a coworker in another aisle, asked what all that was about (was not on speakerphone). It says a lot about how that message was delivered, as it was simply the store telling me that they couldn't fix the bike and to come pick it up. I picked up the bike 5 days later (38 days) after dropping it off and was charged $42 for "service: install bottom bracket". However, as described very clearly in the work order, they did not install the bottom bracket but still charged for that work. Below are the service notes to give some insight on how Rob treats a customer issue. There was no "talk with the customer" but rather just the berating I got, telling me to come get the bike. I didn't have the energy to dispute after such a ridiculous phone call and just decided I'd rather get my bike out of there. FWIW, the bike did not and does not have any other issues as noted in the service notes. I took it to another shop, had the bearings replaced within a week and have not done any other work on the bike other than routine maintenance and care since. If you're looking at shops, you could consider supporting the business for it's solid support of city biking, stock parts/bikes, and other employee encounters I've had, but I'd steer clear of Rob Lynn (Bike fitting tab of website) if possible and would also not expect the "Master Mechanics - No Attitude" that is proudly displayed online (Service tab of webiste) "THIS BIKE HAS MORE ISSUES THAN JUST BEARINGS. We had such a nice experience in this shop until the dude with the long beard came in. He immediately started berating the employee who was working on our bikes. He was coughing and sneezing without a mask on and ironically there was a stupid sign that said they would charge $5 for each bike to be sanitized bc of covid. How do you charge that kind of fee when your own employees aren't masked?! The guy who worked on our bikes and was nice and so was the checkout guy but man Was long bearded dude rude. Felt terrible for the employee. Bike repair was good, homeslice saying crazy stuff to customers and being rude to employee was not. read more

Unmatched Integrity. I have been searching high and low for a touring bike. I have been to many bike shops in Maryland and DC which pushed me to buy gravel bikes that didn't fit either me or my budget. Rob pointed me to the Surly Disk Trucker. But, they only had 2. One was a tad too small, the other was a tad too big. He said I wouldn't be happy with either and recommended I keep looking. Knowing the exact right size to look for I called all over the DMV and fond one. I bought it from that other store. But THIS is my new bike store. They have a customer for life because of the bike they did not sell me. Integrity matters. Thank you. read more

This space is gorgeous. The bikes are sparkly and enticing. The gear is new and tempting. The repair shop is knowledgeably staffed, talented and efficient/ economical. The staff is friendly and helpful. In the repair shop, they have standard care packages, but anything you need done will be taken care of. If the cost is high, they'll let you know before doing the repair work, so that you don't balk at the cost. They suggest you bring in your bike and have them look at it, because they will probably know better than you what has to be done vs. what could be done vs. what doesn't need work. This determination is only made after a nice little conversation about your biking lifestyle. Pretty sweet to incorporate details to better service your baby/ bike! They'll also let you know how much time it'll take, which is cool. When you pick up your bike from the shop area, I like that you then go to the front to pay for it - it helps keep the repair portion and paying portion separate, which for some reason, is kind of cool. I really appreciate the open space of the floor, so you can comfortably walk around and/or bring your bike back to the shop. They have a fancy and high end selection of anything you need. It's a local business in the heart of Adams Morgan, so, figure the costs will be more, but if you can afford it, support them. They have a lot of great additions to just being a bike shop- options/ classes/ meetings for learning how to tune up and take care of your bike, as well as group rides. The bikes are so beautiful, I always wonder: do I need a new bike? Answer: no, but I want one! Wait for the sales. They'll help you find the right style bike for your riding needs, asking detailed questions of all kinds to find a fit. If you need to add air to your tires, you can definitely ask them to pump your tires before you leave the shop. I heart my bike and am not in need of a new one, but when I need one... I will absolutely be here. read more

PreCovid this used to be one of my favorite shops, but postCovid they have become one of the worst shops based on their unbelievably slow customer service and inattention. Do not waste your time or money here...there are a lot better shops in DC. read more

I called the day before going into the shop to see if they could help me with my creaking problem I was having, the gentle man that answered stated that they could in fact assess the problem if I brought in the bike. The next day I was second in line of about 10-14 people and waited patiently for my term at service. The gentle man working there came out and began assisting the first person in line, then another gentleman come out and skipped me and went to the couple who was behind me as well as everyone else in line to see what they wanted and how to aide them. I continued to wait as the second gentleman then made his way back up to the front and took the couple behind me inside. While passively asking as he walked away if a service was all I needed, to which I responded yes. I continue to wait until the first customer was assisted and departed then the gentleman asked me what was wrong with my bike to which I responded that I'm having creaking sounds as well as a clicking noise. He then took the bike and went to assess it further. After which time he left it with another tech and came to assist the next person in line who happened to be a young lady. He then ask her what she needed which she responded with her needs with the bike she had brought in. He then immediately stated loudly that her bike was a fake and that he would do what he could but it's not much he can do with it since it's a fake. Then he took her bike inside and began working on it as well as my own. I continue to wait outside and then ask the second gentleman about purchasing a seat for my bike we go into the store and the first gentleman states that my handle bar was loose and he also fixed my brake for free since it was rubbing and that he heard no issue with it no it should be ok now. I then pay the service fee and walk outside. As I mount my bike and begin to pedal I hear the same creak that I've been hearing, so I turn around and wait by the door for gentleman 1 to return, upon his return to see another customer I explain the creak is still there n he did not fix my issue that I brought the bike in for. He then said they are so busy with customers that they are just trying to get ppl in and out as quickly as possible and that if he had more time he would keep the bike overnight and figure out its issue and fix it after several test rides. I then point out to him that I brought my bike to be fixed and that I'm paying my money like everyone else so I would like the same service that other get and have my bike fixed. He then takes the bike and says loudly no offense but this is a cheap bike. I said to him I know it is but you didn't even ride it to see if you heard the creak you just rolled it inside. He then hops onto the bike and rides around the street at which time the young lady he had embarrassed before calling her bike fake comes up to me and said: did he call ur bike cheap? I responded yes he did, she replied he is a real asshole. then gets back in line. The tech then returns and said he is been riding for 50years, and working on bikes for 7 and he didn't hear anything out of the ordinary with it. I say okay and walk off because clearly my business isn't welcomed there. The customer service at this establishment needs some serious work. I know my bike isn't $2000 but I still think a decent customer service experience is warranted. I would not recommend this place to anyone who doesn't have a bike that either was bought at the store, or is a $1500-2000 bike as lower quality bikes seem to be beneath the tech who fixes bikes and his preference is only high end models. Bought a bike here in February (with a shortage going on) and they made a great recommendation and built it fast. Then, when I had an issue shifting gears a few weeks after receiving it, they made a quick adjustment in 10 minutes when I brought it in. Free adjustments for a year, even! Great bike shop, great service. Could not recommend more. read more

I repaired flatten tire at this shop twice in the past. My bike got flatten tire right next day each time.

I bought my bike there because I was tired of the "you're not hip" attitude from another bike shop. At first I was happy. Even one time in the shop I left a small bag and the guy rode his bike to catch up to me and give it back. That was super nice. But I'm not happy with the Brooklyn Bike I got. The rear wheel kept breaking spokes. Eventually they gave me a replacement, but now it's broken 2 spokes since then. I've never had spokes break with this much frequency. I just recently took the bike in for 1 year checkup / adjustments. The gears were slipping. The mechanic told me I needed a whole new setup: chain, flywheel, and rear derailer. about $140 - $150. I was amazed that the bike would need all this after just one year. The mechanic told me it was normal for those parts to wear out after a year. When I told him that i never had a bike that needed such work after just 1 year, he gave me a an attitude like I was stupid and didn't know what I was talking about. So, I went to directly to another bike shop (in the Navy Yard, I went there before to replace a flat tire and didn't get that bike store attitude). And the guy took 5 minutes, made some adjustments to my bike and said I was good to go (no charge). And the bike is fine, no gear slipping. I guess since Bicyclespace closed their Adams Morgan and K st locations (I choose bicyclespace because the K st location was so convenient for me) they have to find ways to make customers part ways with their money, which is disappointing. read more

Oh ick. If you want to stay away from uber-snotty bike places that make you feel stupid for asking questions, here's your warning. Husband and I went in looking for a hybrid with shocks--a personal preference--and were immediately told that no, that's not what we want. Why would we want shocks? After we made it clear that yes, we did want a bike with shocks, any effort at being helpful dissolved. The guy who "helped" us barely answered our questions and everyone else entirely buggered off, presumably to laugh at the hapless rubes who actually wanted SHOCKS on their bike. Yeah, we're not fancy, Lycra- wearing cyclists. We like to ride on-street and on trails, hence wanting hybrids with shocks. Boy were WE TOLD. We got the hell out of there and will certainly not return. read more

I've worked and been a part of the bike industry here in DC for years and am constantly left with wanting more when I enter and leave the Adams Morgan location. Every time I walk in the store is mostly empty, there's no music, no one greets me, no one asks if I need help. I usually wander about until I decide that the experience is just depressing. The only good sales person I've encountered is Francis and he may be the only reason I go back. My most recent experience was the other day when I saw a post on Instagram publicizing a ride. I realized that I needed a kids helmet and thought I'd swing by. I asked what time they opened and they promptly responded with 10 AM. So I showed up at 10AM and the doors were locked with no one in the shop. I waited 10 mins out front and finally a women rolled up on her bike. She didn't acknowledge me at all but fussed around in her bag for a while looking for the keys. I was blown away. I've worked in bike shops. Don't employees show up BEFORE opening to "open" the shop? Get the cash registers out, clean up a bit. Have a pep talk with employees? Once she found her keys, she asked me to watch her bike while she turned off the alarm. SERIOUSLY? Palm to forehead. Once the alarm was off, I walked her bike into the shop and began looking at the helmets. She never once introduced herself, apologized for showing up late and making me wait for her, or asked if I needed help with anything. The selection was small so I asked if there were anymore in the back. She said no and didn't follow up with anything to try to get a sale. This "customer service" blows my mind. How are you in business if that is the face of your store? I really want to like you guys and I want you to be my local bike shop but this experience is the same every time I enter. You guys do a lot of community outreach and I love that about you but your business is about selling bikes and frankly, your staff sucks at it. read more

No idea if this place has good bikes, prices etc. Went in for a tube. And got a tube. But the customer service and employee interaction was so bizarre. Because I didn't know off the top of my head the size of tube I needed and what valve it was, I was talked to as if I was so beneath even being in the store. It's a bummer, but this place has gone downhill. I have come to this place just for the basic service of flats recently (which has been consecutive trips due to the fact that the store continues to use faulty tubing from a company that they partner with). Because I suppose they don't want to look bad having me return with their faulty tubing, they have used the excuse that they can't make the basic repair to the bike if gets flat again. Minus the gentleman that they have working at the register, everyone is SUPER rude. I get that things are busy, but that is NO excuse in how you interact with your customers. Between Gil and the guy that they have checking in guests, its unacceptable. I use to refer friends & family to go here, but can't in good conscience do so any longer until they revamp how they speak to their guests or until they get new staff. read more

I came here to exchange an overly large Nutcase helmet that a friend had kindly purchased for my birthday. I had also been experiencing bike issues, so I thought, "oh great, I'll ask them about my bike problem" even though I didn't have my bike with me at the time. It is SO vindicating to read the reviews below complaining about "condescending" service and being "belittled" because that is exactly how the salesguy made me feel. When I started describing my wheel issues, he said that my description made no sense because it was "erroneous as to the way a bike is built." He also said he didn't know what I was "talking about." It was very insulting. I wanted to storm out of there after he rambled about my wrong-ness, but I did have to exchange my helmet, which took him forever to do on the register. Stupidly, I also asked him if he knew of a liquor store close by, as I was pressed for time and needed to pick up goods for later, and he said "on Columbia between 17th and 16th." I walked there in the blazing sun, but of course he was wrong on the location. Why did I even ask? Can't speak to the bicycle selection, but the service was appalling. The K Street location is much friendlier. I didn't even know bike pretension was such an extreme thing until that fateful day at BicycleSPACE on 18th Street. read more

I've been to this location twice now and both times I've left super satisfied. The staff here are very knowledgeable about bikes and super nice/friendly. They were able to fix my issues (front breaks and crankset) super fast and gave me tips on how to avoid future problems. Yeah this place is a little overpriced when comparing to competitors but I've been very pleased both times. Great location as well. read more

You know that movie plot where the small, wholesome boutique is put out of business by a heartless, flashy chain (Good Burger, You've Got Mail, BarberShop)? bicycleSPACE is sort of starting to feel like that heartless chain. I used to go to their shop when it was on 7th St. and had pretty decent experiences. Your experience really depends on the mechanic you get. I've had a few down to earth mechanics who will be honest and tell you what you do and don't really need and others that will try to geek you into submission, word-vomitting irrelevant details to try to overwhelm you with information until you've forgotten what you originally came to have fixed and don't know what you should do. That's when they up-sell you. This is considered a form of rent-seeking in my line of work, and it's an obnoxious, insulting tactic that no honest or respectable technician in any field would engage in. So if you're looking for a shop to service your bike regularly, I'd say talk to the mechanics, get a feel for them and if they give you the wrong vibe, try somewhere else. read more

There's something wrong with BicycleSpace and the people that they employ--at least at the Adam's Morgan shop. You walk into what feels like an invitingly large setting dedicated to urban cyclists and expect to be ignored--initially--and then condescended to, once your plea for assistance has been acknowledged. The trouble is that neither the sales staff or the mechanics have mastered the air of imparting knowledge on the ignorant populace who dare to seek information, service or merchandise. The mechanics that I've dealt with know their craft, don't tried to upsell. And when they offer advice, it's delivered without the patronizing and all-knowing air that you can find in other nearby shops. The sales staff are equally equitable when talking new gear or new bikes. They're generous with their time and knowledge, while putting you on as many new sets of wheels as you have time for. BicycleSpace's generous, non-superior, friendly attitude may not work for riders who shave all exposed body parts and ride $10,000.00 molded, carbon frames, but I'm OK with it. read more

I should have realized when I overheard Rob, the mechanic being very rude with customers and arguing between him and Phil?! This store is the Apple Store of bike shops! I went in with a busted shifter on my recumbent and took the bike to the back of the store. (Genius bar equivalent) They instantly put the bike on the lift and in 10 minutes it was fixed. I also bought some gear and they had the full range of items at reasonable prices. I love this place. Just wanted to give a shoutout to Chuck in the back. Took my bike in to get my lower casing replaced and it was done in the time he said it would be done. Had a problem with the pedal arm maybe a week or two after the casing was replaced. Chuck took care of it and got me back on wheels way before he said it would be done. Excellent customer service. Upset with the service I received here. Took my newly purchased bike here to get air in my tires, and front wheel tightened. They said they could not simply do just that, and had to take the whole bike a part and rebuild it again. I have reason to believe that they did not rebuild the bike to make sure all the parts were on there correctly. As I rode my bike today, the seat was shifting from side to side. Smh poor service, and now I have to go all the way back to Adams Morgan to have them rectify this situation. So annoying. read more

Prepare to get price gouged! My roommate swung by here to get his bike looked at. Needed new brakes, which he could've ordered off the internet and installed himself for maybe $20 bucks, but he's new to bikes and didn't know. BicycleSpace saw him coming from a mile away and charged him **SEVENTY BUCKS** for front and rear brake pad replacement -- an inconceivably high price for a service that took all of ten minutes for them to perform. This place is basically the same as an auto mechanic that rips off people who don't know anything about cars. Avoid. read more

Just had several positive experiences here, starting with my Brooklyn Bicycle being built here, amount of time that a staff member spent trying to jiggle around my bicycle lock holder here and there until it was perfect, popping in another time to see if they could replace a reflector, not getting around to asking them for about 15 minutes as they grabbed up my bike and started fixing and tuning issues they'd spotted, going to a free class to learn how to replace my tire tubing. Just really pleasant experiences, really like the staff, and there's nothing that I could complain about. read more

The customer service is terrible. If you call the store to schedule a fitting, they tell you to email. If you send an email and a follow-up, you never get a reply. If you call back, they only take your information and never keep their word to return a call. I'm done trying to spend my money at this business and have found better quality service elsewhere and close by. read more

They've always been my favorite bike shop in DC based on the quality of the work they do and their transparency as to why they're recommending what. I recently had a tricky and annoying problem with a bike I bought from them and appreciate that they took time and care to get it fixed correctly. They're totally swamped due to COVID-19 but have a great protocol in place and haven't left me hanging yet. read more

This is the bike shop I've been waiting for. The space is open, airy, and offers a good view of all the bikes and accessories they have in stock. With light wood floors and great lighting, everything is easy to find. The stock is above-average for a DC bike shop: they have something for everyone, from the beginner to the commuter to the racer. The selection of new bikes likewise runs the gamut from commuters to fixies to racing bikes. Where Bicycle Space really shines is in its service, both sales and repair. The salespeople are very low key and knowledgeable: they offer only the help you need and leave you alone if you just want to browse or think about a purchase. The repair guys (only guys while I was in there) are the best thing about the shop: they're friendly and offer advice and only the repairs people need to get them back on the road. And their stock of small repair parts is truly unbelievable for a neighborhood shop. I needed a specific axle, bearings, and cones for a repair I was doing and was sure I'd have to mail-order. On the off chance the Bicycle Space might have it, I took in the broken part, and sure enough, the dug into their well-organized stock and had me on my way in 10 minutes--amazing. The only possible downside is if you're a fanatic for a specific genre of the sport. This is a neighborhood shop that caters to all mainstream cycling interests. read more

They provide helpful, honest service, and customers avoid the traps of other shops, such as up-selling or selling you products or services that don't work. They provide you with an array of options with a recommendation, which helps customers who might not be fully informed of alternatives. read more

We walked in at 6:58 pm to be stopped by a middle-aged man barking at us, "We're closed, we're closed, check the sign, we're closed." The sign indicated that the shop closed at 7:00 pm. Adding insult to injury, the floor staff mugged us on the way out. I am really sick of bike shops living down to the stereotype of poor customer service and treating their customers like a nuisance. In the future I will take my business elsewhere. p.s. I left two stars instead of one because I have had good experiences at this place in the past, but all of my recent experiences and those of my friends and family have been negative, characterized by egregious upselling and combative sales staff. I've had minor repairs done and bought lights, a helmet and various other things here, and they've been great. Generous, helpful, competent. I've had bad experiences at City Bikes (Tenleytown) and other places, where I've been ignored or patronised by rude people who assume I know nothing, and / or don't know what I want. The BicycleSPACE difference? WOMEN. It's not a "bro culture" shop. Quite a few women work there, and so-- female customers are not automatically ignored, patronised or shut out of "bro" banter. The atmosphere is much more pleasant and inclusive because of it, and that goes for the mechanics, who are friendly and helpful, as well as staff on the floor. read more

Came in to drop off my bike for a tune up in October. The technician asked what I wanted, and I told him I wanted the mid-level tune-up. He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. I asked him to see the service schedule, and he had no idea that one existed. I had to pull their services up on MY phone. Totally bizarre. And despite having no idea of his own business, he was pretty condescending. My bike is pretty odd (electric), and he was acting like I was insane trying to get it worked on. They SELL F*&@ing electric bikes right there! I know it's hard to find a group of bike mechanics that don't have 50% a$$holes in there. But for now I'm not in a forgiving enough mood to give them more than two stars. I think I'll try my much closer neighborhood bike shop. read more
