This place is super helpful with good service. The bike shop staff are knowledgeable, friendly and willing to help. It's also the same people for a while now, which I like. Excellent pandemic protocol. Inside while you wait for your bike to be fixed is a coffee shop. I tried the spiced chai latte, strawberry milk something or other - I can't remember the full name, lavender lemonade, and the iced matcha latte. The iced matcha latte with oat milk is how I like mine, was delicious!! It was lightly sweetened, not heavily. The coffee shop is family owned and built. The resin squares embellished with bike parts hand made! The NEON Proteus lights are the original lights from the original Proteus store. It's a cute little spot if you don't feel like the hustle and bustle of Starbucks and the like. They sell pastries, cookies and ice cream as well and there is indoor seating and out seating options. A few months ago I needed a new bike saddle, something much more comfortable. The guy who helped me (it might have been the owner) installed my new saddle very quickly and made other adjustments that we didn't even discuss. The fee was quite reasonable. If I could give zero stars, I would. I walked in with a budget of 2k to start my journey into cycling in the local area. I walked around the entire establishment for 5 minutes, made eye contact with three of the five + associates behind the counter to which NONE of them even attempted to give me a simple greeting, welcome, or offer to help. This is by far one of the best bike shops in the area. (Insert Heart emojis.) And now they serve tea and coffee, so it's an even cooler place for bikers to hang out. I took my girl Sheba, because the noodle broke and to my surprise, they fixed her up right there on the spot and did an overall tune up. The gentleman fitted her for a new water bottle holder, because she's a foldable bicycle and smaller than most, I couldn't just order a generic water bottle holder and put it anywhere, so I'm glad they took care of that for me as well for a reasonable price. I took her on the trail that same day and she rides better now than when I first got her! The guys that work here are cool and are all about showing you how to keep your bike running smoothly. Of course, they sell bikes, but if you just want a smoother ride, the adjustments, and features they can add are worth the trip and could save you the cost of a newer bike. I love this shop! Few shops will go the extra mile for people, but this shop did that for me. The staff were sincerely dedicated in little and big ways to understanding and supporting, without resorting to half-baked answers, selling me on something, self-centered opinions, or dismissiveness (which I can't stand in a bike shop). No pressure, no hype, just experienced, knowledgeable people who clearly like bikes and serving people. Amazing! I test-rode bikes, decided what I wanted after a while, then brought it back to customize it further. Not once was I fleeced, nickled and dimed, handed BS, ignored, sold, or patronized. I stumbled upon this location. I needed my bike assessed and they help me with no problem. They made some adjustments to my tires and brakes and I was good to go. They didn't try to sell me a new bike or say my bike was old and rundown they just assisted me. I came here with my newer Trek hybrid, and a 1974 Raleigh road bike. Someone stopped what he was doing and put the Trek on a mount. He said that it needed tires and a bunch of other stuff, but not a complete tune up. 20 minutes later, the bike was good to go. Then they looked at the Raleigh, and said basically don't throw good money after bad. In less I was in love with it, let it go. It was never going to be very good, and for a little more money, I could have a modern highly capable road bike. They did only what was needed for the Trek, and talked me out of throwing money away on the Raleigh. I don't know much about bikes, so I needed their honesty. I won't hesitate to return with any bike issues that arise. read more

Very bias staff. Came in to pick up bike that I purchased online. I told the staff my name and order number and staff member ask my name and I stated my name. I ask did I need to show my ID. The staff member stated as long as I have my receipt that I did not need to show my ID. While waiting on my bike to be brought out. Another staff member (female) said have you been serviced. I said yes, she then said I just need to see your ID because you can never be to careful ( whatever that means). After I show my ID she smiled like she was relieved. I will never purchase any other product from this company and I will tell all my friends and post on all my social media's so that this will not happen to another person. read more

This is great bike shop. Service is fantastic and the owner and employees are all knowledgeable. I seriously wish I needed another bike so I could give them more business. I've bought two there so far and had service performed a half dozen times. After the recent purchase of a bike, the front derailleur had an issue on my first ride. I popped back in and they fixed it within a few minutes apologizing for the problem. It was no big deal, brand new bike and it just needed a quick tweak. On another occasion a bolt had fallen off my son's bike's back wheel. Went in, they fixed me up with a spare bolt and refused payment. I can not praise their customer service enough. This bike shop truly deserves the 5-star rating. I've always had a great experience there. I recently had a lot of maintenance work done on my bike and the mechanic Kate was very pleasant, capable and informative as she advised me on upgrade options and needed maintenance work and communicated very well about new concerns that arose in the process. On another visit, I was considering a new bike and the guy who helped us was full of useful information and not in the least bit pretentious. They also have a very pleasant coffee shop setup in the corner, so bike lovers can have an enjoyable coffee shop outing while sitting in a bike shop! This seems like a place that is welcoming and helpful to all types of people. And I love that they offer serious expertise on bike fit. When I decided to upgrade from a low-end road bike to something nicer, I did a lot of searching for the "perfect shop." I settled on Proteus, and I'm glad I did, for many reasons: - The store manager, Jill, is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about bicycles and fitting. She literally will not sell you a bike that is not right for you. - Instead of selling every brand of bike under the sun, hoping you'll buy a bike because you recognize the name, they carefully research all the new models each year and select a small number of high-quality brands with different frame characteristics. That way, regardless of how you like a frame to "feel", you will be able to buy a quality bike. - Their mechanics, especially the lead mechanic, seem to be highly skilled and particular about getting things exactly right. This is important for a bike shop even if you never get your bike serviced there, since bikes arrive from manufacturers in boxes and are assembled by the bike shops themselves. - It's obvious that they have a clear focus on the customer and their local community, not a focus on how much money they can make. read more

I went to Proteus because I had heard wonderful things about it being a great local business. So, I decided I would take my two year old bike there for a start of the season tune up. The bike was in really good shape, had never given me any trouble, but the gears were not shifting as smoothly as they did when I got it. I took it in and a gentleman did an assessment right in front of me, and then announced that it would be $650 to get the bike in top shape. Given that the bike was $450.00 brand new, I about fell over. I finally agreed to a tune up and a new tire and got out of there! I really hate that some business models seem to be based on hit the customer with the highest possible cost and then work down from there. Perhaps if I were already part of their cycling community they would have recognized me and provided a more reasonable tune up estimate or known what my specific needs might be. However, based on this experience, I am not going back. read more

I don't usually leave Yelp reviews, which is why this is my only post, but over Fourth of July weekend, I hit a flat on Cherrydale Lane near Edmonston Road, and rather than making me walk 40 minutes to them through Greenbelt Metro Station, Paul actually came out and changed my tire for me using a tube I had carried on me. Obviously this isn't a typical service, but I'm very appreciative of them for allowing me to continue on my holiday weekend journey without the massive hassle and diversion, and Paul and I had a great conversation to boot. We had such an amazing experience at Proteus Bicycles in College Park. A very professional place and the staff are extremely helpful. The service manager, John, was very knowledgeable and so pleasant to deal with. He took the time out to explain every detail to us and was very honest and patient. Repairs are done at a timely manner and they have an excellent collections of bikes. Very reasonable prices for both repairs and purchases. I came to them the day I received my bike from REI. REI is closed due to corona virus and the bike I received had a loose screw and the hydraulic brake fluid was leaking. The brake fluid needed flushed and I was told it would be a few days. John saw how upset I was and I kept probing if it could be an easy fix. He said he would take it back and get a good look. 20 minutes later he came back with my Bike all ready to go. It was now past closing time and my bike needed new rotors and brake pads due to the fluid contaminating the originals. I told him we may as well change those too, and he stayed 30 minutes late just to get me taken care of. This bike shop is not the closest in distance to my home, but this is why I will drive out of the way to come here anytime I need anything. JOHN IS AMAZING, Proteus is a great shop. John also taught me several things about the bike and left more confident I could get the front wheel and disk brake back on properly, since my bike is a lefty fork. read more

UP SELLING SERVICES!!! I knew the fix was in the moment asked for a $90 tune up and they asked to do an inspection first. Then claimed my bike needed a new cassette, chain, cranks and brakes totaling $349!!!! What they failed to realize was that I had the bike tuned up less than a year ago by a bike shop that has more reviews and high ratings on Yelp and they didn't claim I needed any of this. I highly recommend this place if you need bike repairs or accessories. The staff are friendly, helpful, informative and efficient. My only complaint is the parking lot which has limited maneuverability for cars. Sam completed my bike repairs in 2 days and called to let me know when they were done. Paul offered a helmet and advised me to ride my bike before I drove home so that I can test drive my bike after repairs. He also researched which bike rack would best suit my car. Ben quickly installed the bike rack on my car and advised me to buy a bike beam which created a virtual top tube for my ladies bike so that my bike was more secured on the rack. read more

I called and spoke to Paul about my need to replace my solid tires with the same on my manual wheelchair. Paul said that they would make time for me and I could come right away. The side entrance from the parking lot is wheelchair accessible with a ramp that is inside after you go through the door. It is a little steep but doable with a little help. Once inside, there is another ramp down into the waiting room area but you don't need to go down that ramp unless you want to. Once I got there, I also asked Paul if he could replace my front caster wheels as well so I had new wheels all around. Paul said sure and I supplied both the rear solid tires as well as the front caster wheels. One of Paul's fellow employees proudly wore his Multiple Sclerosis Volunteer Shirt and we talked about the fund raising bike rides. I was glad that he supported their efforts by fixing the bikes on the rides. I was so thankful Paul had the time for me as I had no traction on the wet sidewalks here in Silver Spring. read more

What a breath of fresh air, this shop is truly a community. Proteus is not like the snobby bike shops where everyone is too cool. I walked in with my bike and baby and within ten minutes my bicycle was inspected and my baby was eating a cookie. After inspecting my bike they even placed it back in my van so I didn't have to juggle it and my baby. The staff is friendly, the service is great, this is a small business worth supporting. Proteus encompasses every aspect of a true "local bike shop". Staff is fantastic and knowledgable. I never once felt pressured to buy a bicycle. They have couches and welcome their customers to lounge and read from their library of cycling related books/magazines. I believe it was John who built a wheel for my Super Pista. The turn around time was significantly less than other shops and the price was reasonable. Every time I pass by the shop, one of the technicians always asks to check and make sure the wheel is in good shape. To me it seems like they want to make friends before they make customers. I told her specifically what I was looking for, and though she actually was pushing me more towards something less expensive (since I told her the pocketbook was a worry), I came around to loving this Bianchi. This is one of those places where I feel that I can call up and ask for their advice about another bike shop. And when I move to San Diego later this year, I may do just that. Being a first time customer, I really wanted to like this local shop but my service experience was less than fulfilling. I took a tire in for a replacement rim and was greeted and given a quote right away. Unfortunately, the rim I needed was not in stock and had to be ordered. I was told that I could leave my tire and that it would be ready by the following Wednesday. I was also told that I would receive a call when it was ready. I stopped back 9 days later and it took over 15 minutes of me standing in front of the counter before any of the staff acknowledged my presence. They seemed to be too absorbed in their personal conversations with someone else in the store (the other person didn't buy anything if they were indeed a customer and the conversation wasn't about bicycles). Finally, a mechanic went in the back and came back with my wheel still on the bent rim. He said, "we dropped the ball on this one" but I was not given any more of an apology. The mechanic then fixed the wheel but didn't inflate it properly (under inflated by over 15 pounds when I checked it after putting it on the bike) and charged me full price, again without saying sorry. read more

I'll echo others about the owner--one of the nicest, most committed to her cause that you could ever meet. I'm also surprized that no one else has yet mentioned the THU potlucks. It's been more than a few months since I've been to one, hope they are still going on as it's a funky gathering of locals. There's always plenty to go around too. The ambiance is worth a visit--note the photos of Einstein on his bike. This shop has roots that go decades deep in the community. Proteus used to make custom frames out in the back. The epitome of a high quality, friendly, and knowledgeable local business. I recently moved to the area and had sold my previous bike (a crappy one I bought at Target maybe seven years ago) right before I moved. That bike was kind of my teenager bike, and I was looking for a more "adult" bike. So I went to Proteus. I had been there a few times before to buy some bike accessories, but this was the first time I had been inside the shop for more than 5 minutes or so. It was also the first time I really needed to talk to someone who worked there and who knew much more about bikes than I did. I'm so glad I came here. Jill, the owner, was friendly and accepting. I told her I was looking for a bike hopefully not over $400. She had me explain how I thought I would use this bike and so forth, all the while being understanding and never intimidating or judgmental. After discussing my intentions with her, she showed me a bike that was really cute (to be honest, even though I wanted a good bike, I also really cared about how it looked- I had a vintage aesthetic in mind) and in my price range, but then showed me another bike with more power but a higher price tag. She was never pushy about the higher priced bike- she only told me she was showing me because she wanted me to be aware of the other option in case, in the end, it would end up being a better bike for me. She let me test both bikes out. I rode them around the neighborhood behind the shop. I was always favoring the bike that I rode last, so I tried each one multiple times- and this was absolutely fine with them. I ended up really liking the ride of the more expensive bike, so I took the plunge and decided to get it. She custom fit the bike to me, made sure it was tuned up properly, and helped me pick out a helmet and lock. I walked out with the bike, put it in my car and drove away. Immediate buyers remorse. I know, right? Seriously, Leigh-Ann? I slept on it and the next morning I realized, with the help of my boyfriend, that I would be much happier with the less expensive bike that had the vintage look I wanted. Jill put it best: it doesn't matter if one bike rides better than the other. That doesn't mean that's the best bike for you. The best bike for you is one that you will love to ride. So I drove back to Proteus and told Jill I changed my mind. To her, it was no problem at all. I noticed on the receipt that they charge a restocking fee -- which for the original bike would have been about $80 -- but they waived it without a word. Jill even took the time to size me again. And now I have my vintage style bike! I ride it constantly. I'm sure there have been many stories like mine coming from Proteus, and that's gotta be why they've stayed in business for so long. They're a great establishment. There's not enough of them in the world- but that's why they're so special. Bonuses: 1. If you buy a bike from here you get a free maintenance check 3 months after purchase. I'm about due for mine, and I'm eager to go back! 2. There is a cat that lives at the shop, and it is adorable. 3. Every Thursday night they have a community potluck. I haven't been to one yet, but I'm planning to go soon. They sound like tons of fun! First let me tell you this place is the coziest bike shop ever! There is a fire place with a coffee table and chairs around it so you can sit down and grab a cup of hot dairy free cocoa :) or tea if you like. And I happen to go in on a Thursday night where they usually have a community potluck dinner! Anyone is welcome to grab a plate and dig in!!!! I went in to the store because my boyfriend and I wanted a bike that we could use on some trails as well as some paved areas. This is the first time we were buying bikes as adults. We were helped by a very friendly sales person whose name I forget (He is the owner's son)..who was very knowledgeable and answered every single question we had! He was patient and made sure we felt comfortable. He insisted we take several bikes out for a test ride around the neighborhood. We took his advice and after trying several different bikes I decided on a Kona Dew and my boyfriend got the Kona Dew Delux. Jill the owner was very sweet also and helped size the bikes perfectly for us.
