Although I dropped in without an appointment, they began work on my bike right away. They were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and generous with their time. In addition to repairing the derailleur, they spent considerable time talking with me to explain the nature of the work that was needed as well as providing recommendations for other repairs to make the bike safe. Over the years we have been very satisfied with College Park Bicycles for our bicycle needs, including purchasing another bicycle and various accessories, as well as for maintenance service. Bought a TREK bike here, got disabled after an accident. The good? The shop was willing to buy the bike back, which I appreciated. The bad? The owner refused to assist me until he'd helped every customer who had an appointment or walked in for repairs. My transaction took less than five minutes. I waited more than three hours . . . in the rain. Unless you're one of their buddies or a "real" bicyclist, the staff here will not give you the time of day. read more

He said most new bikes are out of stock and I knew that already. It's ok to be in a rush it's not ok to talk over the customer. If your too busy then just don't answer the phone. read more

I've been dealing with College Park for close to twenty years, was happy with them when Larry still ran the shop. (I got a recumbent trike from him then, now available at his shop, 123 Bikes in Mt. Airy, but that's another story. I have an e-bike now with which I'm happy, and have one for my disabled wife. Indeed, I'm trading in my Electra e-bike because it makes sense for me to do so. I entered the bike market during the 2020 Covid bike shortage, as did everyone else. Finding a 47cm road bike for my wife was a pretty tough feat to accomplish. We call College Park Bikes and ask if they have any 47cm road bikes, and Yes they do!! They were unwilling to tell us what makes/models they had over the phone because they were "really busy", but ok anyhow, they have the right size so we head to the store to check out what they have. We get there to the store and are greeted buy the staff. They show us the bike they have available in the size we needed. They then asked for my id so my wife could take it for a test ride. All good. She likes it!! How much is it? $1199.00 -- Cool lets get it. As we are walking to the register, I ask what year is this bike? Its a 2014 the guy replied. Ok so I pay and the receipt says its a 2011.. whoa 3 year difference, but the wife is happy, so it was a win. (At least so I thought) Why 2 stars? This business preys on folks (like me) who didn't do their research prior to walking in to their store. I easily paid double what this 9 year old bike was worth. Would I ever go back to College Park Bikes? NO Would I recommend College Park Bikes to others? NO - but if you do go, I suggest you do your research to know the market value of what ever you are looking for before going. Please do your home work, and avoid this place. If you purchase anything from them, you will be left feeling like you got robbed without a mask or gun!! read more

During the great bicycle shortage of 2021 this is the place to go for used bikes. Buying used bikes from a bicycle shop is actually illegal in DC so you're going to have to make your way here. So their used bikes are mostly intermediate bikes. But if you have a bike in mind they keep a running inventory list on their website. I enjoyed the friendly and knowledgeable staff. And the best part for me coming from DC, FREE PARKING, across the street!! read more

I would not go to this bike shop if it was the last shop on earth. The manager told me to not come in to their shop because I told him he would not allow me to explain the service I need. He kept giving me all the reasons why he's unsure if they could get to my bike and just wanted to put air in the tire. He got irate and literally said don't come to their Bike shop. 4/7/2020 with all the businesses being closed, he had the audacity to turn away a customer???!!! All money is the same color sir, no matter who you prefer to serve. The service gentleman was very helpful though. read more

Poor service and impassionate employees, that's how I would describe this shop. I came in and inquired about a not-so-common bicycle tire that they said they could special order. They took down the information, and I returned the following week as agreed, and the (same) employee said the item had not come in, check back the following week. I did so, and got a repeat performance. It was obvious by the employee's body language that he had no interest in ordering the tire, nor was going to be upfront about this. "It's not in yet", he says, and walks away. Not sure how this place stays in business- maybe they have a "side" operation going on in the back, catering to needy college students. In any event, I would stay clear of this operation- there are several nearby bike shops that would appreciate your business, and won't give you the run-around. Went here because during my bike ride my tire went flat. Luckily I was in the area. By time I arrived it wasn't a wait and I was able to get my tube replaced in 10 mins and it was affordable ($20 includes parts and labor). My tire has been going strong and I haven't got a flat since. read more

I have conducted business with this bicycle shop for over a year due to the specific bicycle I ride and wished to maintain it at a manufacturer authorized shop due to the price I paid for it (when others discover the price of it, they are amazed by how expensive it is). College Park Bicycles may be worst place that I have had the unfortunate experience of doing business with in the DMV area. If you happen to conduct business with College Park Bicycles during the weekend, please avoid the service technicians behind the service desk as it is not worth your time to interact with the weekend service technicians at this establishment who are rude and impolite to you while you are trying to pay for a service. read more

The staff I encountered the several times I went here were rude and unhelpful (though, they may just be the weekend staff). The communication is very indirect, and its hard to tell what service they are performing for you until after they've already decided to do it. Compared to other bike shops I've been to since, they also seem to overcharge on almost everything -- most likely taking advantage of their prime position as the bike shop for UMD. I bought a used bike here for $400, and after just 1.5 years of use for commuting a few mines to/from campus, the bike has completely worn out and required numerous repairs along the way. I feel like I was mislead in the purchase, though, I know that there's always the risk of buying a lemon when it comes to used vehicles. read more

I went here to get a stripped thread on my bicycle repaired and they did an excellent job. Very happy to have this shop in the neighborhood and satisfied with the service I received. Tip: Different mechanics here have different skill sets so it might help to revisit the shop a different time to get a second opinion from a different employee. Great shop. I am no Chris Froome......but I do recognize great service and knowledge. Spent nearly two hours yesterday with the owner Charles adjusting my cleats/pedals. He was tireless in finding the right fit. Now... I went in on a colder Tuesday afternoon (as opposed to a sunny Saturday;) you can bet that weekends in the spring are very very busy so please take that into account in visiting the store. I suggest that you call them in advance to gauge the number of customers 301-864-2211. Also recognize that the pandemic has driven huge demand in bike sales so there are serious supply issues for all bike stores. It was likewise brought to my attention that Charles participates in a program that educates ex-offenders (here as bike technicians.) I like that a lot; we all need second chances. read more

They're just so darn rude and snobby. I came to get an innertube replaced on my kid's bike a couple of days ago. In the process of them replacing it, they damaged the tire. My kid never even got to ride the "fixed" bike because the innertube was bulging out the moment I took it out of the car. I know someone who is a bike guy. He said that the tire wasn't in great shape and the damage they caused was predictable. That's fine. I would have liked them to let me initially know this damage was possible that so I could have made an educated choice about whether to fix the bike. (I don't spend much on kid bikes and buy them secondhand. Cost might not have been worth it to me.) I messaged them on Facebook about the issue and they gave me a "wow" reaction but never responded. I took the bike in and they called the issue a "defect." They were about to slap on a (non-free) tire without consultation. I told them I just wanted my money back and the guy curtly said, "What am I doing then?" (Uh, you never asked me what I wanted, so I don't know.) They tried to just refund the $10 for the tube itself and not the $10 for the installation! I protested and they refunded the full cost, with a sarcastic comment: "Well, what's money worth anyway?" As you can probably tell from this retelling of my interaction, none of this was pleasant. They were rude from start to finish, no customer service at all. I can't help but wonder if they would have treated me differently if I was there for my own fancy-schmancy bike. Newsflash: people at all levels of biking need bike repairs! It's bad for business to only give nice service to people with $2,000 bikes. There are other bike shops in the area that I will patronize in the future. Definitely not this one. read more

Although it is the closest to me, I will be visiting the other bike shops in the area. They are 1) slow; 2) never follow up; 3) lose items you drop off and 4) no one ever seems to really know what is going on. read more

Went to see about buying a used bike and ended up having an old Peugeot road bike that was my brother-in-law's resuscitated by Larry. He got the gear shifts, derailleur and brakes working on the 40-year-old piece of bike technology quickly and for very little cost. He and his sidekick behind the counter are old pros and Greg provides super customer service. For any bike repair or the next time I'm looking to buy a bike, I will definitely go back to College Park Bicycles. read more

Two things I really appreciated: 1. They're up front with people about what work is needed and what it will cost. I know a little bit about bikes, and I could tell they weren't giving anyone the runaround while I was waiting for my repair. 2. They sell individual tube patches, as well as glue. I called this place about getting my bike serviced and was told I could come in for same day servicing which I appreciated. The person on the fine was nice and told me who to ask for once I got there. When I arrived Larry who serviced the bike was very friendly and although a fast talker, laid out an estimate of what would probably be done, how much it would cost, and how long it would take. I had a few adjustments made and let him know that a month or so ago I was noticing a squeak when I rode but wasn't hearing it anymore so I didn't know if there was an issue. He said it was normal. I returned around the time I was given and my bike was ready and waiting for me. I also purchased a bottle cage and they installed it for me. My only complaint is that now my bike has a weird whistle when it's moved, but not while riding. It's so weird and idk if it's a problem or not. All around fast and great service. read more

I tried really hard to make this my main bike shop when I lived in college park, I lived in the neighborhood adjacent to it and would go to it frequently when I first started as a cyclist. The first couple experiences I had, I tried to make excuses that maybe they were short staffed (which seemed to always be the case) or maybe they were very busy that day. But no, it was always like this, the front of the store rarely had anyone in it which did not help with trying to checkout. Then trying to buy clipless pedals I was basically discouraged from buying the ones they sold in their store because "I would inevitably hurt myself". I went the next day and bought them from Proteus (a better bike shop in the area) they taught me how to use them, and made sure I was comfortable with them before leaving. With the overly opinionated mechanic staff, the terrible customer service, and the very limited options in the store, I would say take the extra couple minutes to drive to Proteus Bikes. read more

Had a very negative interaction at this buisness and this is not the first time. The first time I thought maybe just a fluke but went back a year later and experienced the same impersonal response and feeling as if my.buisness wasn't really wanted. To top things off I was lied to after making arrangements to have a bike assembled after being told to bring the bike there on a Sunday, knowing all the details of the build. Upon arrival and unloading the bike as was told mope we aren't going to be able to donit even though the bike was 80-90% already . together. I recently brought my Montague Paratrooper into this store because they are the only folding bike dealer close to me. I had planned on selling the bike to them or trading with a little cash for a different bike. My bike was in perfect shape due to me not riding it and it being stored indoors on a wall hanger. After stating that he usually doesn't see Montagues in this perfect of shape he offered me $175 cash or $300 in store credit, then went on to explain that he will only get about $500-550 for the bike, which is bullshit, and that was the only price he could give. So basically he wanted to pay nothing for the bike, put it on the floor without having to do anything to it, and make $325-375 for a $900 bicycle. I asked if there was more room for in store credit and was told that there was not. I looked at some of the bikes in there but couldn't find one close to my price range even with the in store credit. I ended up leaving and selling the Paratrooper on Ebay for almost $700. I will not buy anything from that dealer, ever, given the attitude and bad business practices. read more

I went in to look at road bikes. I'm 5'7, the salesman gave me a 58cm bike to test. I said, "it's too big" he said that it was the perfect size for me. It was too big. I've also dealt with the owner, dude has a serious bad attitude. He really comes off as a jerk. It's a shame, I like trek and want to buy from a local shop, but not from these people. read more

Buyer beware... "Vintage" bikes for sale as new. I went in shopping for a road bike and wanted to test ride the Cannondale Synapse. They had two in my size--one from 2006 and one from 2009. Both were represented as new and priced as new. Both may have been new but an uninformed buyer would have paid current price for ancient product. If you want a used bike, try here but don't pay sticker. If you want a new bike, go somewhere else. read more

Worst customer service I have ever seen. I tried to take my son's bike here to have them replace inner tube and purchase two new tires. The guy took one look at my bike and said the cost of tires and service was worth more than the bike. I told him I understood that, but all I wanted was new tires on the free bike I have, not to buy a new bike, which would cost much more than two new tires. Still, he just wouldn't stop talking about what a piece of crap my kids bike was, even though it works just fine. Came in for a new tire with tube and tape, everything went well in the store. Got home and realized they had sold me the wrong size tape for my wheel, so i called the store to see if i was able to return the tape even though i had unrolled it. Charles claimed it was my fault the tape didn't fit until i told him that i had brought the wheel with me and they had sold me a tire and tube with it. There really is no reason for them to give me the wrong length of tape. He immediately yelled "i don't have time for a p*ssing match about tape". And told me condescendingly to bring the wheel in and they'll put the tape on, implying that i do not know how to put tape on, when really the tape is just for a different size wheel. Took my new coaster bike for assembly this past Tuesday. Although I couldn't 'wait' for the bike to get assembled, Shane called me within a couple of hours to say it was ready for pick-up! How's that for efficiency - excellent! Upon pick-up, Gil - not only assisted my husband and I to the car with the assembled bike, he checked out our bike rack (which we've only used twice since purchasing it) to ensure it's integrity and that all belts and clips were taunt and in their right places - making adjustments as needed.
