If you want your bike broken - take your bike here! After improperly repairing my bike causing the pulleys to grind on the casette, the reps argued for 20 mins that it was normal. Came up with all types of other reasons. Instead of repairing a $50 part they chose to be argumentative and lost my business and the dozens of others DC riders that in my realm. Anyone with eyes can see the issue they caused (see below). The best part-- when you leave them reviews about their terrible work they run like little runts to clean it up with lies. Responses to other reviews blame "the new manager." Sounds like they need another "new manager." After keeping my bike longer than they said they would without informing me about the indefinite delay, they never found the time for my simple repair so I ended up at BicycleSpace in Ivy City where they were awesome and did the job in a half hour while I waited. Stay away from Conte's in Logan Circle if you can. Don't promise "it will be done tomorrow," several days in a row, then not only fail to do the repair but also fail to inform the customer of the delay. I wasn't asking to "skip the line," I was asking for the shop not to lie to me about when the repair would be done, and to communicate about any delay. read more

It was Christmas Eve and I was scrambling to get my wife a last second gift - a kick stand she had asked for. Conte's doesn't carry the kickstand because apparently it is a proprietary product only sold at certain stores. I starter traveling on a whim going to different states, riding trails, and camping with very limited funds. I realized after several punctured tubes that my tire was torn on the side wall separating from where it beads to the rim and bulging out. I have to ride my bike apx 20 miles every day just to get close to the city and back Without my bike I would be stuck. However; riding it any longer just wasnt safe anymore. I called Contes bike shop without knowing them or ever being there before. I asked for advice and help and they told me to come on by. I did and it was a prayer answered. When I got there they listened with understanding and compassion and were able to help me with an unbeatable deal to make sure I could not only ride back to my campsite, but to make sure I could get there safely. Also; as I was leaving they were concerned about me and the heat, it was 100 degrees today, and they insisted on me filling up my water bottle and one of the employees there even gave me his vitamin water to stay hydrated. The whole staff there was kind, caring, understanding, and empathetic to my situation. Beware - this place does incredibly poor service. If you have a premium bike or premium equipment, you are putting it at serious risk. Came in Sunday with a small gash in my tubeless tire. They wouldn't patch the tire and didn't have a single tire in stock that's compatible with hookless wheels. So paid them to put in a tube...Which they installed improperly, as it flatted two miles later. Came in the next morning and - again, since they have an insanely limited tire supply and won't patch - had only option of swapping out brake rotors to my backup wheels. Which they charged $70 for - even though it was 20 minutes of labor (I have time stamps because they sent text message updates on check in and completion). All incurred because they can't install a tube correctly on hookless wheels. This is on top of the $40 I shelled out Sunday for a defectively installed tube. 20 minutes of labor all incurred because of an incompetent first repair shouldn't cost $70. read more

Eh. $500 bucks for an annual tune up, inclusive of a basic bike part or two. That's what I pay each year as the total bill for maintenance on my CAR. At that price you'd think they'd at least top off the tire pressure when you pick up, but nope. And I get it, everything is "more expensive" and "supply lines are backed up" and "things cost what they cost." Well sure, but for that price they better work right and my new "new" derailleur does not work properly... it clicks and jams. So I have flat tires and a bike that works worse than before I brought it in, and I paid $500 bucks for the privilege AND it took 4 days -- those supply lines! The staff were perfectly nice....though they seemed to be trained to upsell. So you could have my business for $250 a year, forever. Or $500 -once. I won't be back. read more

What initially drove me to Conte's was the simple fact they were open during their posted hours. Easy enough, right? Well, I've been going ever since and recommend them as often as able. This latest visit was for a Spring tune-up and the funny thing is how I seemingly brought in a Corolla and got back a Supra. During this period, I have periodically called and asked for a status update. I have been told that "looks like they're waiting on parts" and then "it should be ready tomorrow" and then "looks like they're still waiting on parts" and then "parts arrived, should be ready by tomorrow" and finally "we just don't have enough people to handle all the repairs we have on hand". Yesterday, when I asked what might help move things along, somebody working in the shop said to me -- "Why don't you leave a negative review? If I were you, I would be upset, too." read more

I hate to give any business a bad review but I honestly couldn't believe how bad this experience was. TLDR; these guys broke my bike, charged me for it, claimed the problem they caused couldn't be fixed. I have very limited experience with bikes and was able to fix it myself at home with just a dinky little wrench. Long story: I brought my bike in for a regular old flat tire. They didn't offer to patch the tire, went straight to a tube replacement. Fine, I was happy to get a new tube, it was old and had been patched before. They didn't have the right size, but told me the size they did have would be fine.... a little odd, but okay, I didn't really have another choice if I wanted to get out of there that day with a rideable bike (I thought). It was a Sunday and there weren't any other bike shops around that were open. Little did I know I would've been much better off just taking the bike home and getting the flat fixed elsewhere another day. When they're putting the tire back on, the mechanic remarks that he's not able to tighten one of the nuts all the way, but it should be fine... I pay and take the bike out to try and ride it home - immediately the wheel is pulled into the frame by the uneven tension and is grinding against the frame, so it's unrideable. I take it back in and they act annoyed that I'm back. The owner lectures me about what a piece of junk my bike is while complaining that it's taking so much of his time to have to try and fix it and they don't have room for it in his shop. They try multiple times only for me to go out and apply pressure to the pedals and have the same thing happen immediately. One of the mechanics has to tell the owner to stop grinding my wheel against the frame because it's bad for the bike. The owner ultimately can't get the nut back on tight, and ends up asking me to walk to a local hardware store to try and find the same exact nut... I do it, I find nuts the same size but not the exact same shape (the outside portion is different). The owner acts like it's my fault I didn't get the "right" nut. I suggest he try switching the nuts, and this sort of "works" - he tells me he's able to get the nut tightened down this way and puts some kind of expanding glue in there that theoretically is supposed to make it hold better, but tells me I can't ride it for at least 24 hours and basically the bike is fucked and I should just get a new one. At this point it's been like 3 hours and they didn't even refund me for the tire "fix" which has made my bike unrideable because they can't get the wheel back on correctly. Of course, the fix doesn't hold and the same thing is happening again as soon as I try to ride the bike a couple days later. There's a dead spot on the screw thing where the threads are worn down and the nut isn't holding, so I grab a regular little adjustable wrench from one of those silly toolkits they sell everywhere, I take off a washer from each side so the nut doesn't have to sit right on the dead spot, and tighten it right up. No more problem, working bike. read more

tl;dr - terrible customer service, terrible attention to detail, expensive I left my bike for a winter tuneup. A week later I was quoted ~$450 on repairs and such. When I questioned the purpose or necessity of these things we agreed to drop the work and therefore cost to ~$150. Another 2 weeks later I received a quote for $250. At this point I just wanted my bike back so I just agreed to it. Admittedly - some of the delay was on my end here due to missing phone calls and getting busy, so I don't think it's fair to fault Conte for this. Throughout this process every time I called I got a really shit attitude from whoever was answering phones. Example exchange: Me: "Hey, I'm X and I left my bike there a couple weeks ago. I wanted to get an update on it." Rep: "That's fascinating. Let me check." *click* New Rep: "Hey...how can I help you?" ... That sort of glib, sarcastic attitude was prevalent EVERY interaction I had with the store (not every employee). The previous owners had some questionable customer service but at least they took good care of my bike. So I paid my $250 and got my bike. Back tire was near flat, front tire was low on air. My brakes were fine but after a short ride they already seem wonky. I then had to take my front tire off and the quick release was so over tightened that I had to hit it with my bike lock to get it to loosen up. There was grit and dirt all over the place - no cleaning or effort there even after $250. I will never return to this shop or go to another Conte bike shop again. read more

I have literally never written a review. My service here was just so amazing that not writing one would be a disservice to this business. Anyway: Ive never really been a bike rider but I got a really nice hybrid bike a couple years back that I've basically been letting rot in my shed. I took it out about a year ago and tried riding it only to be met with karmic justice as the brakes were so shot and squealed whenever I tried using them. Fast forward a year (today) I went in with a friend to finally get it fixed. I was met with such warm people from the moment we walked in. They were so friendly and goofy. Cracked a lot of jokes while also teasing/lecturing me about all the grime that had built up on my bike. Im not trying to be dramatic but it just felt like family. The wait time was basically nonexistent. Miguel was the one helping me out and was able to immediately diagnose my bike without even hanging it up first, even calling out both my flat tires that I hadn't noticed. After the rest of his diagnoses/fixing it up ( took maybe 10 mins) he told me to take a ride around the block. It was perfect again. No noise. No brake issue. I brought it back and he touched it up some more and then sent us on our way FREE OF CHARGE!! I didn't really know what the price point would be walking in but free is not what I expected. Also, being someone who is not in the bike community I felt so welcomed and never felt belittled for my ignorance. It was just such an amazing experience all around. 10/10 place. Buyer beware. Conte's has taken customers for granted for far too long. It's too bad that they exemplify everything that gives the overly-mythologized "local bike shop" a bad name. Conte's has earned the bad name time and again. They will give you terrible service, charge you exorbitant rates, and try to take you for a fool. Beware. Be careful. Watch out. Go elsewhere. These guys will hurt you. Four incidents over a couple of years show that this Conte's location 1) is poorly managed, 2) will bleed you dry by pushing for unnecessary services, usually with scare tactics about "safety", 3) has inexperienced mechanics with limited knowledge and expertise who are basically training and guessing on your bike, 4) is exorbitantly expensive and charges way beyond actual hands-on repair time, 5) refuses to take responsibility for damage their mechanics inflicted, and 6) has extremely long wait times and utterly crap communication. I'm a longtime bike guy, have been regularly riding for 20 years as an adult. I can do most work myself. I'm also very busy, and it sometimes makes sense to pay someone else to do my bike work. I took in a "low end" bike I use as a beater for errands around town, and I lock it with little concern it will get stolen. It needed a shifter adjustment. It took them 4 days to turn it around. They charged $35 and did not even get the adjustment right. But on top of that they did a couple of more adjustments as a "courtesy" WITHOUT asking me if I wanted it in the first place and tried to charge an additional $125 for truing a wheel, adjusting brakes, "inspecting" wheel bearings, and lubricating the chain -- none of which I needed, and none of which I consented to. They didn't even ask for my consent; they just did it presumptuously. I took in one of my high end bikes, which was in immaculate condition, for what should have been a straightforward part replacement. One of the brake cables was frayed. I asked them to replace both brake cables. After 10 days (!!) they told me it was ready. I pick up the bike and saw immediately that they had damaged the paint and there was grease on various parts of the frame where they had handled it. It was surreal and I was livid. Major amateur hour. I do not want some inexperienced apprentice practicing on my bike, but that's exactly what happened, with horrible results. They acknowledged it and the excuse was that it was an "honest mistake." They did not offer to repair the paint, clean off the grease, or anything else. I had to accept their "honest mistake." Plus, the brakes worked horribly after the cable replacement. They couldn't even get that part right. I could go on with a couple more terrible experiences in which they damaged a bike or got the repairs and adjustments wrong. But the point is, please be careful before you entrust your bike to this shop. Their lack of professionalism is astonishing. They need to learn what customer service is about. They make excuses for crap service unapologetically. They do not stand behind their poor work. They have poor communication skills. And they fleece you in the process, adding insult to injury. If they do this to a bike nerd like myself, I hate to think how they treat folks with less experience. I can't in good conscience recommend Conte's to anyone under any circumstance. Please take your bike elsewhere, or learn to wrench yourself. Educate yourself. Let my poor experiences there be your warning. I've given them multiple chances to do the right thing and they have squandered all of them. Conte's should do better. Maybe they will be forced to now that the pandemic bike boom is over and there is a glut of bikes and supplies that shops are desperate to unload. I'm not going to give them another chance, though. I had some pleasant encounters with some Conte's employees, but when I brought them my bike for maintenance I had a bad experience in numerous ways. This happened over a year ago, but I still think about it a lot because I use my bike a lot. I use my Surly bike extensively for commuting and occasionally for recreational rides or loaded touring. I do quite a bit of bicycle maintenance myself except for things involving hubs or bottom brackets. So when I heard a mild grinding noise from the rear wheel while coasting, I figured I should bring it in. They replaced the rear wheel; I also agreed to the basic tune-up that they suggested. I still get very irritated when I recall how they treated me--as a totally low priority and, worst of all, like I'm an idiot who is too stupid to notice or care what they are doing to my bike. Problem 1: Delay w/ bad communication: Bike shops were busy at the time; I totally expected it might take a while. But the guy there breezily told me that the work would be done in a couple days, as if it was weird of me to even ask. However, it took two weeks. And they didn't bother to keep in touch with me: when the deadline THEY had given me had passed, I would call, and would be told my bike isn't ready, and would be given a new later deadline. That happened twice; finally the bike was ready after the third deadline. And they gave me shifting excuses: one person mumbled something about parts delays, another person explicitly said there were no parts delays, etc. Keep in mind that I commute via bike, so not having it available was inconvenient. Problem 2: Bad, wrong-size parts put on bike: The new rear wheel they gave me is too narrow, according to the charts of recommended rim/tire widths. I have 1.5"-width tires on my bike, and Surly bikes are designed to accommodate even fatter tires. They gave me a 559x16 rim. It is 1/4" narrower than my front wheel. I noticed the issue when I was changing a flat--the tire bulged in a weird way. Granted, the tire has not actually fallen off the rim, but they should replace the wheel with the correct size, not one that barely works! Also, the old wheel was a higher-quality tubeless-ready wheel and the replacement is not. I get that bike parts are in short supply; perhaps no better option was available. But you need to TELL me about the issue, not slap on some crap and assume I won't notice! At one point I had briefly asked how they choose the replacement parts. The mechanic Pedro stated that they roughly match what's on the bike. Well, that sure didn't happen. Problem 3: Bad explanations: The mechanic, Pedro, told me that my rim had worn down from brake use and could fail, which is why I needed a new rear wheel. Well, first of all, the grinding noise had been coming from the hub, unrelated to the rims. But whatever--I was willing to accept that I might need a new wheel. The other weird thing is that my wheels had been replaced about 2.5 years previously, which is not that long ago, and also I use my front wheel for braking much more than my back wheel. So, logically, does the front wheel also need to be replaced to avoid catastrophic rim failure? I asked this on the phone, and the employee checked and came back and told me "the mechanic says the front wheel doesn't need to be replaced." Hm, not much of an explanation for a legitimate question! It adds to the sense I got multiple times that they were just giving me BS explanations, as if their customers are a bunch of idiots who don't deserve honest engagement. Problem 4: They threw out my brakes. I had the kind of brakes that allow you to replace just the rubber brake pad, sliding a new one on when the old one wears out, rather than replacing the entire shoe. They threw them out and put on a whole new standard brake pad. This is a smaller issue than the problems mentioned above, but I would have appreciated them giving me back the pieces that they removed so that I could continue using them as designed. Now I have replacement rubber pads that I can't use because they threw away the piece that the pads mount on. Brake replacement was not listed as part of the tune-up, so it didn't occur to me this might happen. Problem 5: Dirty bike: When I picked up my bike, it had huge black smears on the handlebars, which have yellow bar tape. The dirt came off with some scrubbing, but it just adds to the "**** you, we don't care" attitude I got from this experience. Granted, when I picked up my bike a woman there spontaneously offered to adjust an off-kilter grip, so at least some people in the shop care. read more

I was immediately helped to find what I needed - some Look Delta cleats and Indoor Cycle shoes. I was lucky that they had my exact size available as the selection is small. I suspect if you check out the selection on their website you can order a greater variety of shoes to be picked up at their shop. No complaints since I got exactly what I needed practically on my doorstep. The price of the shoes and cleats was comparable to what I found online and the best part was being able to try them on in-store, so I knew they fit. The Shimano SH-RP301 cycle shoes were $110 and they fit true to size. The Look Delta cleats were $20. My favorite part - they assembled the cleats and shoes in-store so I didn't have to. read more

Which would make it pretty obvious which kind of too but I need so I didn't bother instructing him to give me the correct one which is a Schrader. Then I asked since I'm already out riding that they put it on since I don't ride with a tool kit. They told me I would get it back by tomorrow! So I said no thank you cause it's 10:30am in the morning (next day) lmao Went to hardware store around corner and borrowed a socket wrench and tire lever, then put on new tube myself only to find out they sold me a Presta Valve! I visited Conte's for the first time ever after moving to the area (Wisconsin Ave Friendship Heights location) to get an innertube for my bike. Though I clearly asked for a presta valve, the guy rang up a schrader valve, which I didn't realize until getting home. Bummer, but no big deal--got the right part expedited on Amazon and went to the Logan Circle location (much more convenient to my work) a couple days later to return the innertube I couldn't use (totally unopened, original receipt, etc.). The guy at the counter gives me attitude like I'm trying to pull a fast one, tells me they don't take back innertubes, and says even if they did, he could NEVER take it back from another Conte's location. ??? When I tell him that's unusual for a chain, he says "that's your opinion." I said, "really? Like at Target, Walmart, Best Buy, etc.--it's common in your experience that you have to return to the location you bought it from?" He doesn't answer and says I can talk to his boss, which I asked to do and he then tells me, nope, the boss is not actually available, but I can email him and THEN says "I'll email him, too, so he knows the story from both sides." So silly--over a $10 innertube, Conte's Logan Circle location guy chose to offend, spout nonsense, and end any future prospect of a customer relationship. This guy needs customer service training!! Very unprofessional staff and hugely disappointing customer service experience. I stopped at the bike shop today to pick up my bike that I had left for repairs on a tire. I also wanted to buy a new helmet. The staff member who I approached was not helpful, to say the least. He provided condescending responses (--Why is this helmet better than others? --It's Specialized) as well as being discourteous and outright unprofessional, including raising his voice. Unacceptable to the core!! Upon being presented my bike for whose service I had paid lots of money, when I asked if the attendant would please pump some more air into one of the wheels, the staff member said: "Do you know how to bike air into wheels?" Laughingly sad, but also sadly unprofessional. Overall I can't imagine so much bad and snarky customer service being packed into such a small business. took my broken specialized frameset to contes cathedral heights 3.5 weeks ago in order to start the replacement assistance program. i was told by specialized i must do this through an authorized specialized dealer. so i took it to contes cathedral heights. it has been very slow and difficult to get this processed mainly because the service manager julian morales is either too busy to handle this claim and/or he has not done this before. i have had to contact specialized directly and relay what specialize tells me and tell this directly to julian. even with this information, julian does not proceed in a timely manner because i believe he is also busy with bike service. but how difficult is it to send an email to specialized with the same information i provide to him? i am ready to do business elsewhere as this should a fairly quick and easy process. how am i able to speak to specialized directly and get all the updates about my claim only to find out that contes julian has not responded. i ended up picking up my broken frameset as nothing will get done if you leave it to julian. also on a side note dealing with Greg was very good. however greg did not monitor my request as it was julian's job to handle and this greg did not know that julian was not performing my request on a timely basis, leaving me quite frustrated. if you are a customer requesting service from julian, i would look elsewhere like contes vienna virginia. read more

I got a flat 2 miles into my DC to Pittsburgh ride and decided to go to a shop to have it repaired rather than using my spare tube. They had a nice set of tubeless tires in stock so I just replaced both tires as they were worn anyway. They had me back on the trail in an hour. Labor was a bit pricey but in my position I wasn't choosy. Very happy with my experience. read more

Rude on the phone, rude in person, bike not returned on date as promised, $160 for a standard tune up. These guys are total boners.

I just got my first bike (since being 10 probably) and it needed some TLC so I took it to Conte's because they came recommended by a friend (also stopped by City Bikes but they were a little snooty to me). I was first told they had a 2 week bag log on fixing up bikes but they would take a look and low and behold, they were able to fix it up in 30 minutes! They gave me excellent advice, were very personable and super nice. They also had great COVID protections in place (only letting X number of people into the shop, etc). Although the accessories I purchased were expensive, they I'm sure are worth it (lock and lights) and the staff put them on for me and showed me how to work everything. Emily was my 'person' and she was wonderful. I'll definitely visit in the future with all my bike needs and questions! read more

I've been to this location four times for various types of "emergent" work on my bike. I originally came in based on my stellar experience with Conte's in Alexandria. Pinky, the technician there, was beyond helpful the one time I went in to have a spoke replaced. After finding some additional problems with the tire he was clear in explaining the issues and my options. I didn't mind paying the somewhat higher prices because of the sense of craftsmanship and professionalism I got from the Alexandria location. Conte's on Q street has been in many ways the opposite. After having some tires replaced recently I noticed the wheels weren't true and that a spoke was broken. On taking it back to the shop the next day technician told me that, in general, wheels are not perfectly round. On top of this mildly patronizing treatment, I just never got great "vibes" from the staff -- not that it's always a reliable reflection on the quality of a place, but combined with the poor quality of work I'm inclined to look elsewhere. read more
