WORD OF CAUTION TO VEGETARIANS AND THOSE WHO SUFFER FROM FOOD ALLERGIES: This makes me sad to update my previous positive review to one star but it is just not possible for us to patronize this restaurant after today's experience. When I called to place my order I explained that we have someone in the family that has a severe seafood allergy so I had to ensure that nothing we were ordering had seafood. We ordered the pork dumplings, cream cheese fried wontons, chicken lo-mein and beef peppersteak. Again, before I finished the call I asked "is there any seafood in any of these items?" and was told no. Once we got home we opened the cream cheese wonton and saw pink chunks inside that could only be explained as crab meat. We called and the same woman answered that had taken our order and was told "it isn't crab, it's imitation crab, which isn't seafood and is made of flour." Wow...anyone that knows anything about cooking knows that imitation crab is still seafood! It is typically made of a white fish that is cheaper than the real thing. This could have sent someone in my family to the hospital if they hadn't been diligent enough to verify the contents of the food before eating. All of the food went into the garbage - almost $40 worth. And the worst part is that the owner won't even acknowledge what they had done here which makes me fear for others suffering from food allergies that choose to eat from this restaurant. read more

So...... order Uber eats....called delivery driver to confirm he got the order. Delivery driver places the order... we got $100 worth of food just for the restaurant to mess it all up. My mom and grandpa got the shrimp vermicelli, and I got the beef vermicelli. My mom and grandpa received shrimp and chicken. *not what they ordered* I have a seafood allergy and they gave me a combination vermicelli which included shrimp, chicken, and beef. We all ordered Vietnamese café and they forgot to put the creme in the café. I go to sip said café and I get a mouth full of black café. Not what i was expecting at all. Not to mention the cup was only half full to begin with. The lid was cracked open like they were going to add more/something but nah. We used to frequent this place a lot before COVID but now it's not worth it to us anymore. Not sure I will come back. Best thing about the whole meal was the egg-roll which I ate before I could get a picture of because I couldn't eat my meal. read more

We ate some very tasty Chinese food today. My wife enjoyed her triple delight, tender and tasty...even the beef, the egg roll really good too. We both paid 50 cents extra to get wonton soup with our lunch specials, glad we did 'cause it was flavorful broth wise and the wontons were spot on...some places overcook them and they get mushy...not here...I usually add salt, pepper and siracha sauce...didn't add anything to this bowl of goodness! I had the General Tso's Chicken and it sure hit the ever widening spot....just a little crisp on the outside and tender on the inside...good stuff. read more

New to the area & checking out all of the things. So much about this little place I was unimpressed with. Let's start with when I opened the door. Not even a foot planted inside and I'm hot with "Here or to go." Unsure that they were speaking to me, I looked around before responding. There were only two tables occupied and no one else at the counter other than who I presumed to be the husband/wife owners. I realized they were speaking to me when they stated "here or to go" again. I said, "To go." She said, "Good" in a relieved kind of way. She wasn't pleasant at all, as if her entire existence was an inconvenience. I placed my order (lemon chicken with steamed rice, hot & sour soup, an egg roll, & unsweet jasmine tea). If I had to sum it all up in one word . . . with the exception of the tea . . . flavorless. But, more than that, the quality of the meal left a lot to be desired. The egg roll was overcooked, nearly burned on one end. The hot & sour soup had no mushrooms, a bit of heat, & was pretty bland. Not only was the rice dry but it wasnt even flavorful jasmine rice; it was some kind of plain old flavorless, short-grain rice; cutting costs, I suppose. I was most disappointed in the lemon chicken. It was nothing more than the same chicken bits from sweet & sour chicken with a goopy lemon flavored syrupy sauce on the side to pour over or dip in. Not very flavorful; not even flavorful enough to help the rice taste better. Took perhaps 10 minutes for my order to come out. She couldn't even be bothered to bring it to the table I was sitting at waiting; she plopped it down on the table next to me, patted it and realized something was missing, went back to get it. Same pissy, inconvenienced attitude no matter how pleasant & cordial I was. I got to my car to leave & realized I didn't have my tea. I returned for it. When she came out of the kitchen and realized what had happened, she found that amusing . . . worthy of a smile & giggle. Whatever it takes for some folks, I suppose. Although I generally like to give the benefit of doubt & 2nd chance, I won't be with this one. It wasn't just a one or two off situation, it was everything. The entire experience. read more

Happened to be in Hutto at lunch time, so went to this place again after a long absence. My review from 5 years ago still holds true. The only thing to add is that I ordered pork spring rolls, and they came out as shrimp, even though I asked the waiter for pork twice. Fortunately, I don't have a seafood allergy and they tasted good. I will add that the waiter was diligent in refreshing your drinks. read more

A nifty neighborhood Asian restaurant. Bien Hoa is a Vietnamese Chinese place. It has a bigger menu than is typical at these places. They have all the American Chinese standards and pho if that is what you want. But they have a decent number of other Asian dishes on the menu - so you won't run out of things to eat. * Execution is superior. We had steamed dumplings. Whether these were homemade or from a purveyor (I suspect the latter) the dish was made special by the industrial-sized cup of homemade dip sauce that came with it. It was a good dip sauce - sweet, yeah ... teriyaki based, yeah ... but with a lot of other ingredients and flavorings in the recipe. The sauce was complex and tasty and changed flavors as you moved around the cup. The sauce would have been good on cotton balls - and was just fine on the steamed dumplings. * For the main course the love of my life and I went for tofu twice, once as Vietnamese Curry and once as Sesame. Both were superior dishes. Curry is often the dullest item on a Vietnamese restaurant menu. (Not even the sisters at Tam's deli - legendary Vietnamese cooks in their own right - made a very good curry.) This was "standard Indian curry powder flavor" but tasty and mellow. (Vietnamese curry too often is yellow colored nothing). We wolfed ours down. Sesame Tofu was an all-out sweet dish to appeal to the American palate. What made this dish interesting was a strong pineapple element - giving it the Polynesian flavor mix you would have gotten at an old Trader Vic's. The flavors were well blended. Nothing was cloying. The little kid in me said "LET'S GO!" There wasn't a molecule of Tofu, Sauce or Garnish left on the platter by the time I licked up everything on the plate. I was happier than I would have been after eating a box full of Cocoa Krispies - and I do love my Cocoa Krispies. * An interesting extra credit touch was the fried rice. They have a unique approach to fried rice at Bien Hoa. No soy sauce whatsoever. Lots and lots of beaten egg. So the rice comes out lemon yellow rather than dirty brown. The dominant taste is egg yolk rather than soy sauce - and the dish tastes rich rather than salty. I am quite fond of traditional fried rice - but I like the originality of their concept. Frankly, egg rice goes better with other Asian dishes than does soy sauce rice. So they are on to very appealing tech. * Will Bien Hoa overtake the palaces of legendary Asian cuisine in Austin like Asia Cafe? Probably not. But it is way better than the typical exurban strip mall Vietnamese/Chinese place. Hutto is small but incredibly well blessed with restaurants. It has the Texan Cafe with its to-die-for pies ... It has Beau's with its fine sandwiches and great Southern style cooking. Bien Hoa is not as legendary as those places - But it is definitely a superior establishment. read more

First off they forgot to give me my drink I ordered. I called back to tell them and the owner wanted to not refund me. She wanted me to come back and use it as a credit. I don't live there so that wasn't going to happen. Second the food was disgusting. I got the sweet and sour pork lunch with egg roll and egg drop soup. Everything needed salt and the "fried rice" and soup has literally no flavor. I throw over half of it away even after drowning it in salt. If you're thinking about going there just say no and go get Panda Express it's better. That's sad and harsh but very true. read more

Ordered the lunch beef and broccoli comes with s choice of soup. I opted for the egg drop soup, it had an extreme orange tint too the soup which is different then what I'm use to and the soup was very thick but tasted just ok. The beef and broccoli was on the salty side and was a little on the oily side. The rice to entree ration was off there wasn't enough rice. Overall I say this place is just ok but I'd probably go somewhere else next time. read more

This has actually been our 'go-to' Chinese restaurant for several years. Not because it's wildly good, but because it's close and convenient. But I think we're ready to bite the bullet and go further afield. Last night's dinner was just one more reason why. We ordered online, and the food was ready quickly. It was hot, fresh...and boring. I love orange chicken, but there was little sauce, and not much more flavor. I really enjoy combo fried rice, and this version was generous, moist, and so Americanized that it was virtually tasteless. I added various sauces yesterday to try to liven it up, and have been looking up fried rice recipes today to see if there might be some way to 'save' the leftovers. The garlic beef was pretty good, although it was a bit spicy for my SH's taste. It was definitely the best of a lackluster bunch. Is it terrible? No. Economical? Not particularly. I went for the first time today. I ordered general Tso's chicke and steamed rice. I order this from other places all the time. there's was the worst ever!! so dry and not covered with any sauce, like it was sitting for awhile. the rice was awful! How can you mess up rice!! I should have known better when the place was empty at 3:30 when I went in to ask a question. came back at 5 to order and there were 2 people eating. I ate a few bites and that was it. my daughter got crab puffs and Singapore noodles, which she will eat when she gets up. since I hated mine I thought I would just try a tiny bit of hers. it was to spicy for me but she may like it. This place is amazing, on par with the best Vietnamese I've eaten anywhere. The food is phenomenal, the service genuinely warm and the atmosphere is nothing like what you'd expect from a strip mall. I have been here numerous times for lunch only. I have ordered only off the lunch menu. I state this just to be fair. Pros: The lunch combos are very large in portion size and they are very reasonable priced. It appears to be a family business. Cons: I have ordered several different chicken items off the lunch menu and it seems to all be the same battered and fried dry chicken the only difference between the dishes is a different sauce - you know lemon or orange or whatever.... This makes me think that perhaps none of the food is fresh. Their take on rice is unique in my experience. Not my favorite preparation. The egg drop soup is orangish and looks very unnatural. The hot soup is also an odd color saturation. So, the bottom line is being a smaller town Hutto does not have a whole lot of choices. I got this while my in laws were visiting and everyone loved it. I didn't take any pictures but we had the crab puffs, beef broccoli, shrimp delight and pepper steak. All were great and we have plenty of leftovers. read more

First time ordering from here. I ordered online and all the picture were unavailable when ordering online. I ordered shrimp lo mein and hot and sour soup. I was really looking forward to it. The outside of the establishment looks disgusting. The inside was even worse, not clean at all. As soon as I walked in the lady at the counter shouted can I help you from across the restaurant. I wasn't about to yell across the restaurant. Got to the counter and asked for my to go order. It was hot and ready and packaged. Went home, opened my food (they forgot utensils), the food smelled ROTTEN. I took one bite and it tasted awful. I didn't even try the soup. I immediately threw it in the trash. $20 down the drain. Always looking for a new experience in the oriental food world. I happened upon this cozy little restaurant in Hutto totally by chance. They were very busy with their take-out business, not many people sitting inside. It was about 30 minutes before closing time and one of the ladies who came in to pickup her order was singing their praises. I ordered my Sesame Chicken and it was ready fairly quickly. It was good, but next time I may venture to try something new. The lady behind the counter was very busy, but still very polite and friendly. The restaurant was very clean. What I though was so unique was they had a small lending/reading library at the front of the restaurant. It just struck me as such a thoughtful thing to do. read more

While they offer both Thai and Chinese food, we think the Chinese is the best in the area. So glad to see them reopen after COVID closure in 2020. They have a new phone number, 512-642-6596 and 512-642-6587. They are open for table service and take-out. We love the lo mein and kung pao dishes, and haven't found any selection we don't like. I have a severe food allergy to fish and or seafood based anything before ordering we asked about the sauces used while cooking and if everything was seafood free we were about to order and got assured we were fine.... after taking the food home and examining it we noticed red specks in the cream cheese wontons then promptly called the the staff back where I was told "we don't use crab meat it's imitation crab meat" for those who don't know this is made from white fish and is seafood.... If I ate the food that I was assured was safe I would be spending my New Year's Eve in the hospital or worse STAY AWAY if you have any food allergies whatsoever. read more

This is one of the closest Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants to me. I will say the portions are extremely huge. Coming from Virginia that was something I had to get use to bc I was used to choosing between two different sizes, a pint or quart. This place is ok. I can honestly say I have yet to come across a Chinese restaurant that I can say I love. This is the reason I make my own at home at times. Update: I'm becoming more disappointed with this place. There are some dishes that has flavor and some are just awful and a waste of money. When my aunt was visiting from VA she wasn't impressed and threw her leftovers out. She was wondering why the egg foo young was so big and shaped like a muffin as where we are from we are used to seeing it flat and round. So, my son and I were eating at this place yesterday. The service was mediocre at best, and I'm referring mostly at the attitude of the ladies serving. Food was almost tossed in out table, the constant approach to see if we had finished our food made us feel uncomfortable and that they wanted us out of there; granted we were paying customers....a meal for two that almost cost $40 dollars. Certainly overpriced, not to mention that they do not offer refills, so drink your soda slowly. We are only one family, but for sure they will not be getting our business anymore. I order beef and broccoli with lo Mein I was very disappointed the sauce of beef and broccoli had and ok flavor the problem was the meat it was too chewy and it had an odd flavor. Very dirty floors and tables as I walked in to order Pho to go. Staff was unfriendly and rude. Food did not take long, but after unpacking it at home the noodles were old and stale as if they'd been sitting out. The meat was wilted and gross. The food was okay, and the service was bad. Our server was an older lady, she wasn't very patient when we were ordering our food. She rushed us the whole time and none of my friends felt comfortable. Then she rushed us out of the restaurant before we had finished eating our meals. She brought out to-go boxes even though we didn't ask for any. I think this was her way of getting us to leave. When we asked her questions she ignored us or would blow us off. If you want to have a nice dinner or lunch don't go to this restaurant. Portions are generous, the place itself is a little older so just doesn't have a very clean vibe to it. Seems to be better to order out take it home but for the most part not bad for decent Chinese out here in the country. read more
