A smell of deep caramelization. We were fortunate to walk in as soon as a table left. All the other tables were occupied and many customers were sadly turned away. We opted for the classics: beef goulash and veal schnitzel. Both were excellent. Goulash had a rich earthy and savory taste. Felt like a lot of love was put into making it. Beef was tender. I requested a roll to mop up every bit of the remaining gravy. Schnitzel was super crispy, juicy, and well seasoned. It came with a side of potato salad. I used google to translate the menu and its German is as good as mine because I thought I was ordering authentic Vienna Sausages and actually got a plate of 2 long skinny hot dogs. However, the service - at least by American standards - was pretty bad, not very friendly or helpful (almost had to resort to begging to get the dessert menu and then our check). But Beim Czaak just wasn't a very friendly place, which hampered our experience a little bit. The flavor of the broth was rich yet smooth. The weinerschnitzel was excellent. Perfectly cooked and the meat was flavorful and tender. The tasty potato salad was a perfect compliment to the meat. Honestly if I go back to Vienna in the near future, I will make an effort to head back to this place. The folks here are extremely friendly and the service was top notch. My main course was a tasty Krautfleckerln. Only the salad did not meet my expectations just because the dressing had little flavor and was slightly watery.
