I was a tad skeptical walking in here--craft beer + vinyl sounding like some obnoxious hipster daydream--and walked out having discovered my newest favorite bar. Bierwax is a perfectly chill bar, with cool, knowledgeable bartenders pouring you an excellent assortment of craft beers. Whether they have a DJ spinning tunes or the bartender is running the show, the music is integral but also supplemental--hip and diverse (as you would expect from the acres of vinyl on their walls)--but not pumped to 11 so as to distract from your bar experience or convos with friends. Stevie is the quintessentially perfect bartender. She listened to my beer taste preferences and offered up some excellent suggestions, both tap and bottle. I started with a great Transmitter sour on tap, but when I wanted to move to darker beers for a nightcap, she steered me to the bottle list for a couple of special gems. Did you know there is a beer brewed with Oreo cookies? And that it is even better than you could possibly dream it would be? That's the kind of magic you get from cool bartenders who know their customers and their stuff. Bierwax takes so much pride in their music that even their beer glasses are etched with vinyl record grooves. Their main focus is 90s house and rap music. Much respect to that. They had live DJs for the few hours we were there. When we arrived, we were informed that it was a Jack's Abby/Springdale takeover. All their taps consisted of those brands. They were also serving Burros that night which are basically mini burritos. I had the carnitas and the carne asada burros which were good munchies with our beers. The bartenders were very friendly and accommodating. Every time I finished my last sip they made sure to ask if I wanted another drink. They served with a smile. This is a good place to hang out and listen to music. But it's not easy to carry on conversation here because the live DJs can be a little overwhelming with sound (as they should be). I believe they have a backyard and it might be easier out there to socialize. I had a good experience at Bierwax but I don't think I would go out of my way to come back. read more

BierWax is definitely one of the best beer bars in Brooklyn! Lots of local and semi-local drafts. Pretty extensive bottle/can selection. Knowledgeable bartenders (Stevie especially). And of course, tons of vinyl. Not to humblebrag, but I drink a LOT of craft beer. It takes a wicked beer selection to stump me, and they had stuff here from breweries that I'd never even heard of. As well as styles that were new to me! Love that they do tasting-size half pours so you can run through the entire draft list if you so choose. Plus their sour beer selection is on point! Great beer spot. They have a huge list of rotating taps, cans, and bottles. Was really happy to see they had so many porters and stouts available, which isn't always the case. Was there in early afternoon on Saturday, and it was crowded but not packed. Staff was friendly. Music was good. There's a bunch of records and a DJ booth, but was not in use while I was there. I have patronized Bierwax on numerous occasions and found the venue to be welcoming, comfortable and respectful of all people. The staff is mostly people of color and they are wonderful, friendly and helpful. Bierwax also features food vendors of color who offer authentic and delicious meals. The venue is the bar that I have always wished existed. A place for like-minded fans of beer and music to gather and enjoy one another. Bierwax also has legendary hip hop DJs spinning, people like Large Professor, Bobbito Garcia, Rob Swift, Psycho Les, etc etc. They have the all female dj crew Doyennes of Disc regularly spinning souns. You can find art exhibits from legendary graffiti artists like Trap. And they even have open mic and beat performances from legendary underground rappers and producers. BierWax has continued to be an excellent example of an NYC craft beer destination. Not only are they open for to-go sales, but they also deliver!!!!! During this time, it really feels great to grab a beer to go from a friendly bartender and to engage in great conversation about which is the best Wu-Tang member. Has a sick vinyl record collection and has a DJ pumping great music? Ok I'm going to check the place out. Has a Wu-Tang mural on the wall? TAKE MY MONEY! BierWax is a welcome addition to Vanderbilt Ave. Don't get me wrong, I love Vanderbilt, but all the new places are restaurants. The bars are still great, but we needed something to liven things up. Last new place was that liquor infused cookie place and that did not work out well. The place seems cool. I really like the space. It's not narrow, but not terribly wide either. So come with a group early, or you'll be squeezing through for a place to sit. The bar is nice. There's an area for groups in the back. And they have small tables and seats to the side. It was chilly out so I couldn't peep the outside but would like to another time. The decor is cool. With tons of vinyl records behind the bar. I imagine the DJ is playing most nights. Situated nicely in the corner. The beer selection here is really good. Various beers from all over. Different sizes. Great prices. I wonder if there is a happy hour. Seating is a bit limited but they have a lovely, large outdoor space that would be great in warm wedding. This place is fine, but certainly not blow me out of the water good. Yes, the place has a chill vibe and the records are cool. But other than that, I was kind of disappointed. The bartender was not that friendly. The draft beer list was good, but not as good as I thought it would be based on the reviews here. There are lots of bottles/cans to choose from so that is a plus. What gets me though is the price. $7 for a 8oz pour? Nope. That is ridiculous. The other part about this place is that it is SUPER CHILL. Like the kind of chill that when the bartender went to change the record that was playing it was so quiet it was like being in a library. It was strange. I don't think I've ever not liked the music, and it's at the perfect volume where you don't have to strain to hear the music but you can still have a conversation. They had a 4 page menu of craft beers with helpful descriptions. We made it for happy hour on a Thursday night (until 7pm) and got $3 off the regularly $9 12oz select drafts which was pretty awesome. The bartender was on point - pleasant and present. He was also switching vinyl in and out throughout our visit there, and the music selection was all new to me but I greatly enjoyed it. I don't know how busy this place gets during peak hours but I highly recommend it for a laid back off-peak hour beer. We almost had the whole place to ourselves. Good ambiance, beer, prices, and bartender, what more can you ask for. I'll definitely be back in the warmer weather to take advantage of their cute outdoor backyard patio as well! read more

When I was younger and went out a lot, I dreamt of a place like Bierwax. A chill place with good taste and a history and appreciation for golden era hip-hop music. Since it opened up, it's been easily one of my favorite places to be in all of New York. The last time I celebrated my birthday with a lot of people, I had us go to Bierwax. It's one of my favorite birthdays ever. The DJ was magic. The people were happy with the craft selections. There was space out back and cool art on the walls. Ended up here after eating brunch next door. Good selection of craft beer, including my favorite -IPAs, reasonable prices, great music and they have an outside backyard! Great neighborhood spot that wasn't too crowded or full of people asking for things other than beers despite it being a craft beer bar. They do have cider and Prosecco should someone in the group be one of those unfortunate souls. TIP: They have a $10 credit card minimum so either bring cash, buy a round for a friend or (most likely) have multiple drinks yourself. I worked the Brooklyn Hip-Hop festival this year, and this was where we held the "after party" night after the 3-day conference. I have to give a big thanks to my boss Wes and his wife Ebony for extending their love, and affection towards all the people who help make that weekend a success! We had a great time, with some amazing dj's playing hits from old school to new-school. Not to mention the coolest Hip-Hop decor I've seen in a minute. Also, the extensive selection of beers! They even give you a great sample size too to try out! Definitely will be coming back here, and the hospitality was great as well. I enjoyed myself ALOT! I couldn't remember the beer I had but I do love me some IPA's and the percentage was about 5.7% so yeah you could only imagine how good of a night I had! Thank you again BierWax ! read more

Definitely hipster central, but I like it. You have to love to try some fun, funky and local beers. All the times I have been there they have a good variety on tap: sours, stouts and of course IPAs. The backyard is nice and quiet. On a random Tuesday they had two guys making tacos back there and they were awesome. Chill vibe for the hood! read more

We had friends visiting from out of town and knew this spot would be a great for them and it was! Love the old records that are in bookcases behind the bar. Also love that the beers on tap are written in alphabet magnets. The seating of BierWax is mostly at the bar. There is a couch to sit on, but when we were there it was reserved. There is also a backyard area, but since it was cold out we did not check it out. When we were at BierWax there was a DJ playing records which was cool. The music wasn't too loud and we could still hold a conversation. BierWax has a handful of beers on tap, ciders, a few wines, and a long list of canned beers. The glasses of wine were $8. Not sure if they have a happy hour because we were there on a Saturday night. We liked this place! read more

Visited BierWax for the first time for an event and felt very welcomed. The owner personally said hi, which is awesome! The beers on tap were all local beers (NE). Upon entering, there are seats by the windows and a row of seats by the bar. At the end, there are a handful of tables for small gatherings. It always has an extensive local/New York beer list and the staff is really knowledgeable about what they're serving you. Really dope place. It feels like a place where you can just chill and groove to great albums. I tried about 4 different beers/ ciders and they also have wine. Although I planned to just pop in to check it out, I ended up staying for hours because I was having such a good time talking with people and listening to the vinyls. It was also cool to talk to the owners about their NYC roots and see their joy from bringing Bierwax to Brooklyn, their old stomping grounds. This is my new neighborhood gem! Beers are flavorful and plenty - the array of beer types really pushes you to venture into flavors that you may not otherwise taste. AND most if not all beers are sourced locally. IF you're not a beer fan, they do have wine and cider. However, no liquor so leave that at the door and try a nice beer or two. Aside from their drink selection, the vibes here are just amazing. The people, the bartenders, the owners - everyone is just so full of life and love. You can't help but want to come back. I went on a Friday my first time and then went back on a Sunday. The best part was that the owners recognized me and came over to chat. Lastly, it's nice to be in a bar that plays vinyl and great vinyl at that. You could be listening to funk, hip hop, pop, etc. As someone who enjoys records and collecting them, it's nice to see the sheer number and range of records BierWax has along the bar wall - that's a lot of vinyl love and passion being showcased front and center. read more

I've been here 3 times and tried to love this place, especially because of the great ambiance and selection of drinks. However, hospitality and exceptional service is nonnegotiable for me. If this doesn't matter to you, don't read further. Every interaction with a bartender has been unpleasant. ESPECIALLY the Asian woman and the larger unkempt man. I wish I had a better description. They have consistently given me attitude for asking very reasonable questions that shouldn't annoy an employee. This is a very nice spot to get a drink with chill vibes, so it's such a shame I've felt antagonized and intimidated by hostile employees.
