Would you drive 42 miles round trip for a pair of shoes? Checked the weekly Big 5 internet ad new each Sunday, and saw they were selling 361 Degree running shoes for $30. Tried on three, the 361 Kroozer, the 361 Spinjet, and the 361 Strata 2, in the Sunnyvale store, a 7 minute walk from my house. Bought one pair of each and used a $10 off $30 purchase in a mail flyer. Jogged a short distance on hard level concrete pavement trying out each pair of shoes, being careful not to trip on the sidewalk dividers. White bottoms in the first two, so had to use care to clean off the bottoms, before returning the Kroozer and Spinjet. Settled on the 361 Strata 2, but had to get a size 9, as my usual size 8 was too narrow for comfort. Ran a mile on the softer asphalt side streets against traffic, and no impact pain on the knee joints, unlike 99% of the Big 5 running shoes, which is saying something as my knee joints just turned 67! Trying to find running shoes to replace my 2016 Hoka One One Clifton 4 mens size 7.0 EE running shoes purchased on sale in 2017 from Footwear Etc. Hokas are still the softest on my knee joints and lightest at 9.2 ounces. Discounts hard to find on the internet even at www.sierratradingpost.com, which sell gray Clifton 4 size 7.5EE for $70, compared to $91 originally. Add 9.9% tax and $10 shipping, and it's $87. 361 Strata 3s have just been introduced in July 2019, at $150. Strata 2s are closeouts, originally selling at $150 when first introduced in January 2018, but now down to $52 at Nordstroms, and now $25 at Big 5. State of the art, premium running shoes, they are designed to stable over pronators, with a horseshoe shaped highly cushioned bottom, weight 11.1 ounces, about the same as my 2014 Saucony Grid Stabil 3s purchased online from www.sierratradingpost.com for $60, down from $120. Only problem with Big 5 closeouts is that they have a very limited supply of these shoes, usually about one pair of shoes for each full size 8,9,10,11, at each store, and often only in black, the least desirable color. Saturday 9am, I drive to 9 miles to Stevens Creek Big 5 and get another pair of Strata 2s. Tried phoning, but nobody picked up the phone for the shoe dept -dudes don't wake up that early after staying up late Friday night. 100% plus employee turnover in these jobs every year. To get anything done you need to talk to the store manager in person. Drove another 5 miles to the Campbell store, but they were out of size 9s. However the manager, John Brown, called up the Blossom Hill store, and had them hold the last pair of size 9s for me. He even printed out the address Wife was navigating using Google maps on her phone. I drove another 10 miles down into Almaden valley to get the third pair of Strata 2s. No DWA, on the 18 mile drive back to Sunnyvale. Shoes were so comfortable, that the wife got a 361 Kroozer, and a 361 Spinjet, and she doesn't even run! They are having another sale on these 361s at $25 this week at Big 5. However if you have men size 9, you are SOL looking for blue and orange 361 Strata 2s, as yours truly got the last ones in Santa Clara county! I went to the register and asked that person if they could check stock for me? She said yes and said they should have 5 on hand. I told her I couldn't find another one. She said oh just ask the guy in the back he'll help you :c I told her that jerk blew me and my dad off!! She got the manager and he personally went back and got me one. I was so fed-up with the Sunnyvale location, that I tried this store. They were super friendly and super helpful, very refreshing. Their website claimed a difficult-to-find item was in stock. I tried to call ahead and confirm, but their phone system is busted, and put me into an infinite loop. So I drove out there to check for myself, and was disappointed to find that they did *not* have it in stock, and the guy said they hadn't seen it in several months. Apparently, their website is notorious for being inaccurate. That is especially problematic when they are too busy or unable to answer the phones. read more

I wanted to return shoes and repurchase using coupon, this is next day. I was told can't repurchase(shoes were never on sale) The guy that said he was manager/Bryan needs training. I know there is a shortage when hiring good people but he is bottom of barrell sales person was very disingenuous too. I buy stuff for biking from Big 5, but not any more. Sometimes it isn't what you say but how. Please invest in employee training and know just a person to fill a position is bad for any brand. I will never shop here again. I purchased two sets of boots for my children and returned them the next day (obviously unworn and with tags). My boys looked at the boots and said "too bulky" so literally not even taken out of the boxes. Anyway, I returned them today. What is appalling is the fact that they scanned my drivers license. This is a complete invasion of privacy. Why do you need my DL number, address, etc. They had the receipt. They had the merchandise in new condition, tags attached, unworn. They had the credit card. Picture ID is even ok, but scanning it? If this is company policy then it sucks. Or maybe it's company policy for some. I'll leave that one alone. read more

I called ahead to see if they had roller skates and the gentleman that answered the phone was very kind and courteous. Big 5 has everything. Since some kids put out a tick tok video on roller skating, it has become very popular and skates are hard to find. I was very impressed with the stock and selection of inline and quad roller skates. Lots of men's skates. I got one pair for my son here and another for my other son at the Stevens Creek store. Great place to get tennis gear, baseball gear, hiking gear, frisbees and more. read more

Big five is a beautifully organized store and carries excellent merchandise. The store is conveniently located facing Campbell Avenue in a strip mall with Nob Hill Market. Parking is a breeze because the parking lot is huge. Prices are appropriate. The hired help is not particularly helpful, and in fact, I found them to be negatively so. The two of them were seriously low-energy and unenthusiastic about pleasing me. This should and could be a five-star business. So much depends on reliable, enthusiastic hired help. read more

After leaving Play It Again Sports we headed to Big 5 for some shin guards for the twins. The store is clean, organized and staff is really friendly. They had the shin guard/soccer sock combo for the twins and my hubby picked up a new set of shirts for running. We usually go to the Big 5 in Milpitas for convenience since we live 5 mins away. Normally when I return and can't find my receipt (bad habit) I get such a look and given grief. She was patient and asked if o knew when how much etc. I was able to pull the info up and thankful as it was just above $70. She went to the back and was able to pull the receipt and give me a full refund. She could have said no, rolled her eyes, given me a hard time but didn't. I commend her and will be more than happy to shop here in future due to her customer service!!! Note: I was able to pull up my back info to show date, amount and card. Solid sporting goods store I go to for basic running and work out gear. Prices are pretty reasonable and they have a pretty good selection for the size of the store. Sort of a no frills place, if you're looking for some sort of exotic piece of new fangled gear, they may not have it. Staff always pretty friendly and helpful. The sales person said to look it up online. My freind told the sales person that he is not good on computers and asked to see the merchadise . Good but could be better. So who's the competition ... no buddy in their price range. Have to say sports basement is my favorite but their prices and quality shoes are much higher. Like to buy camping gear here and my favorite walking shoes. You can get a $10 off $50 coupons. Most recent buys were swim suit and sports shorts for my daughter. Used to buy their soccer packages for my son. They are not the highest quality and shoe models from past years but they sell with the least expensive prices and all the competition is gone. A smaller Big 5 branch. One thing I always appreciate about Big 5 is their SUPER CHEAP prices for brand names like Adidas, Nike, and Under Armour. With that said, I came in looking for kneepads. They had a selection of volleyball kneepads, and I was able to find what I was looking for after searching around the store. The merchandise layout is a little confusing and some directional signage would be incredibly helpful for customers navigating the store. Customer service could have been better. No one asked me if I needed help even though I spend several minutes actively looking, until approached a staff member. The cashier was pretty curt too. read more

WARNING: The return policy here sucks! They don't allow returns on anything that has been opened at all! Yesterday I came to this store to look for some free weights. They didn't really have any small ones for women! They had some weights, but they weren't what I was looking for. The closest thing that they had to a light fee weight was this As Seen on TV shaker that was so light, there was no way that thing would ever get me toned at all! On the plus side, there is a decent selection of other items such as stuff for tennis, sports apparel for men, women, and kids, basketball, camping stuff, shoes, and more. The issue with finding free weights wasn't the main problem though. I settled on almost buying this strange looking pilates thing that comes with two ropes attached to the base that claimed it was good for toning everything as well loosing inches. I also almost bought a pilates mat to go with it. Anyways, I was skeptical buying the pilates contraption thing since it looked like something that I might end up getting tangled in or something like that. So I asked the cashier what their return policy is and if I could return it for a refund if I don't like it. She then told me no, but then when I said sorry, I don't want it anymore, she said that I can bring it back if it's still in selling condition. I almost bought it then, but then the manager of the store happened to be in the area and he overheard most of everything. I think that she asked him about their policy too and he said that it can't be returned if it's been opened. So I almost ended up wasting almost $30 on that product alone! I'm so glad that I asked about their return policy! I don't like stores that have this kind of policy. I think that's to strict and a huge inconvenience to customers. I walked into this Big 5 a while back, and have never been back. Being somewhat of a fitness noob, I heard about kettlebells as a good fitness tool. I walked into Big 5, hoping someone could help me find one. There were three employees hanging around the front when I walked in. I asked them if they had any kettlebells. They all looked at me like I was an alien. One guy said "do you mean...kettleWEIGHTS?" and I hadn't necessarily heard that term in reference to the kettlebells, so I shrugged and said "yes, i suppose". He looked baffled, making me feel like an idiot. He walked me over to the weights, and there were several boxes. Every single one of the brands said KETTLEBELLS! not one said kettleWEIGHTS! I then turned around to walk out, and said to the remaining guys up front that all of the boxes said kettlebells and left. Terrible, unfriendly service, and I haven't been back since. read more

I'm writing to let you know how disappointed I am with the customer service quality given by the Management at the Big 5 Sporting Goods at 1600 W Campbell Ave. Campbell Ca 95008. I came there seeking to purchase a firearm and was handled with disrespect and a lack of quality in customer service. Both encounters with management had the ability to process firearms. The first encounter with a manager on duty, a woman on 02/14/13 (night shift), was rude and had a demeanor that she did not want to help me or be there. She was also rude in answering questions. This poor customer service made me come back another day to purchase the firearm. The second encounter was today, older man 02/18/13 (morning shift), was also rude as he gave off a demeanor that he was not interested in helping me. He also wasn't careful with the firearm as I watched him hit the rails when placing it back. I understand that the firearm (shotgun) will attain such cosmetic wear, but he had no regard in keeping my firearm from further damage. As I was processing my DROS, he was rude and it felt that I was hassling in doing the process. By this time, I became upset and decided to take my ID away from him and do my business elsewhere. This lack of customer service will deter me from this store and not recommend it to anyone. In the best interest of your company, please re-train them in quality customer service. I just want everyone to know to stay leery from this one. I know this may be my first review, but keep in mind, it isnt my first time with customer service. Hope this helps. read more

This store's return policy inspires me to spend my money at one of the other Big 5s next time around. Picked up a pair of Reeboks here, wore them for TWO DAYS, got a blister. Did a thorough job cleaning them up, but the manager wouldn't give a refund because "you can already see the crease" near the toes. I know it's less than optimal, but sheesh, isn't that going a bit overboard, especially considering I was returning it for what is arguably a defect? Today I went in on my lunch (about 12:30pm) to look at firearms that were on sale. I was greeted with an unenthusiastic hello from the cashier. I went over to the firearms department and waited for any sort of associate to appear. Another gentlemen joined me and after about 5 minutes of waiting had better sense than I to cut his losses there and find a new store. While leaning over the counter to get a better look at prices I had an older man who I can only assume was in a managerial role force his way buy me, open the employee door and quickly retreat into a back room which out so much as a hello or how can I help you or any even marginal attempt at customer service. The company sent me the wrong pair of softball pants. I sent them pictures of what I ordered and what they actually sent me so they could see the wrong pant was sent. They still claimed to have sent the right item. They stated they will pay for return shipping but not for the original 10 dollars it cost to ship to me even though it was their mistake. So you kinda know when you go to Big 5 they don't have the best selection, for this particular location, it is super small and you can easily pass it. However, I was running errands in the Kirkwood Plaza and had looking for athletic shorts on my to do list and was planning to go to Sports Authority the next day. However, I'm glad I stopped in, they were having a massive sale, 30% off shorts, go figure. Right away someone asked me if I needed help and he was very thorough and helped me find the socks I were looking for as well and even offered money saving advice. Kudos to him, b/c when I asked him how he was doing that day, he said he had received some really bad news that morning...I wouldn't have know any different with his awesome customer service. While I was there, they had a few challenging customers and the Manager and staff looked taxed but did a good job of trying to deal. I'll come back here depending on what I need mainly b/c of the selection, but this place has charm, and I quickly browsed the store and they had a lot to offer despite their size.
