This location is about the same as any Big 5 that I have been to and that is a good thing. I love the consistency. Although they have a more comprehensive MMA and / boxing selection than others. I love boxing and noticed they are having a sale on punching bags, so I purchased a 70 pound Everlast elite. I normally use 100 pound bags, but this will do because I can always add more filling to make it heavier. I am seriously impressed with the quality, durability of the bag, it's indestructible and looks great! feels good against my hands and it maintains its shape, makes a great noise when it takes a shot. Really good for bent arm shots. I hung it up in my garage with a 150 pound ceiling anchor that I got at Home Depot, overall great bag and it doesn't swing too much, but still gives a decent swing. They started yelling boat pole between the store staff. It was very childlike the behavior. And the clerk that was on hand was no help unless you were looking for attitude. I had a very disappointing experience at this store today on Steve s Creek San Jose CA. While I appreciated the salesperson's effort to find my size, the manager's reaction to my attempt to assist was extremely unprofessional. I found my size on the shelf and (after knocking the door multiple times) briefly slightly opened the back room door without stepping in to inform the salesperson, saving them time. Ran to Big 5 today to grab a cornhole board for a little 4th of July fun and all they had were non-regulation boards on the floor. Knowing they carry regulation ones, we asked. Erik went above and beyond to help us out. He searched the computer and boom, one in stock...but where? He went all the way to the delivery trailer and dug it out for us. Today, November 22, 2023 at about 9:20 am, I visited this store to inquire about fishing license and fishing rods. I approached the manager whose name is Eric at first to ask how to obtain a fishing license. Right away, his demeanor was unaccommodating and very cold. The second interaction I had with him is when the lady employee directed me to Eric again regarding my question about fishing rods. I waited for him to come back from the back room and proceeded to ask him which one of the displayed fishing rods would be good for crabbing. Again, with his cold demeanor and in a very cold voice, he responded, "I don't fish" (and that that - flat out and end of the story). Now, I am ticked-off. My response to him was that I am not asking if he fishes or not. And that the correct answer as a good and trained customer service employee (specially being the store manager who is supposed to set good example to his coworkers) his proper response would have been that since he does not fish, he wouldn't know. And at this point, he should make an effort to get me an answer or just be honest that at that time, no one who has knowledge about fishing rods is available. Interestingly, after my explanation to him about how he is supposed to do his job (which is customer service) the right way, his only response was, "OK". Customer Service is just a common sense! Granted, I am partially to blame to this since I just ignored the signs since I really had to go after driving an hour through rush hour traffic from my previous test site in Oakland, but still. I also have IBS and firmly believe that it should be mandatory for restrooms to be easily accessible, but that's another story. I test cell towers for a living, and believe it or not, there is a microcell tower right in front of the shop. I made a beeline to where the restroom might be before I started my shift, and instead of telling me nicely that I wasn't supposed to use it, an employee had a scowling look as if I just beat her grandma to a bloody pulp in front of the entire family and holding the door open with her foot, and just pointed at the sign. I mean, to advocate for persons with disabilities, what if I was illiterate or dyslexic? This is unacceptable, unprofessional, and clearly overreacting. This store need new employees including the evening manager. I have been going here for decades and have never been treated so rudely. I arrived to the store 10 minutes before closing and showed the employee I just needed the one day special. The manager told the employee that she could go help me if she wanted. Then she got on the microphone to tell me the shoe department was closed. All 3 employees were hanging out in front doing nothing. They should of closed early if they did not want to help me. I rarely leave negative reviews but this James at the Big 5 store shoe section deserves one for his HORRIBLE attitude and judgmental comments. I am petite with small feet and have ALWAYS only managed to source for the right shoe size at the Youth section. I was looking for a pair of hiking boots and was told the female shoes section minimum size was 6. Knowing that the right size is absolutely essential especially for hiking, I then went to the Youth section to source for shoes. James passed a dismissive comment that none of the youth boots would fit me and REFUSED to help me find the youth boot size needed. And OF COURSE I know what I was doing so I self-served my way to eventually settled on a Youth size 4 hiking boots. I honestly don't need this James' help and unhelpful advice because if I did I would have walked away thinking there was no fitting shoe size for me. Managers, pay attention to who you train because people like James clearly don't understand customers' individual needs, rude, judgmental and dismissive. James, if you hate your job at customer service, leave it, don't mar the efforts made by other staff in the Big 5 store who sincerely try to help out. I am not even asking for information such as waterproof status, material and breathability which I think is information and knowledge that a typical sports shoe section assistant should be equipped with. Nor do I think James cared to provide them when he just lost to follow up with the customer in his shoe section with a BAD attitude. Bottom line: if you don't know better, keep your comments to yourself -- especially in customer service. I was denied taking the FSC test because of the lack of "manpower" in the store. Keep in mind my friend and I went in and there were two managers and 2-3 employees who weren't busy. The test takes about 10-15 minutes to administer and isn't that much of a hassle. However we were denied the test by the taller older manager just to then be told that he would administer the test if I bought a firearm right after. Excuse me but what type of backwards logic is that? You don't have the manpower to administer a small test, but you the manpower to sell a firearm that takes around an hour or so?? We decided to head to Morgan hill instead but before that he said that we had to be 21 years and over to take that test, and that wouldn't have been an issue but he said it in a condescending tone that was uncalled for. (I'm 22 years old and also if someone was looking to take the FSC test then they'd know the requirements to do so) I don't know his name but he's the lengthier, older manager and if you see him just know that he won't be much help. We came in tonight late, around 7:50 pm into the store , to pick up a duffel bag, knee pads, shoes and 2 pair of pants. By 8 pm, we already had the pads, bag and shoes- big thanks to the guy who helped us with the shoes-, we only needed the pants and couldn't figure out a few things, therefore we decided to ask a question, so we can be on our way. But, according to Sarah, the assistant manager, instead of offering help and answering my questions, she said that we weren't allowed to shop anymore, since it was past 8, so she kicked us out, told us to get out right now. I told her that I also worked in retail and never kicked anyone out, who was already in store and still shopping, I would help them, instead of creating problems for a few extra minutes overtime. She tells me that she doesn't like my attitude and threatens me to leave the store - or else! So, this way, at 8:04 pm, I payed $150 for what I had so far and had to leave the store and go elsewhere for the pants. I don't want this experience ever again, so won't be shopping at Big 5 anymore. This weekend in particular we were taken care of - purchased a basic skateboard for our son and unfortunately it was warped...no sweat TJ swap it out - but the second one was likewise not right (the trucks were basically frozen and would not pivot). Ok, it's a $30 skateboard so the quality is not great - but the store made it NO hassle to return and I VERY much appreciate the Manager's helpful and positive attitude. Will be back for sure. Just experienced one of the best shopping highlights for the holiday @ Big5 on Stevens Creek near Santana Row. I needed shoes and other accessories. I was in and out in 20 minutes w/ my new shoes. I was impressed w/ everybody working this Sunday (12/3/17@noon). When I arrived I was greeted and assisted immediately. At the shoe department the gentleman was prompt and helpful. He took the time to ask about my requirements. When I left the same person that greeted me was helpful, professional and efficient. I had to ask her name as I was delighted that such customer service still exist. The customer service was horrible and the GM Erik was so rude and for no reason. We went in to buy a weight set with bench and asked for assistance when he began to shut us down and took the tags. At some point he went to the back and came back with this torn/ retapped box. When we asked for an unopened box and expressed we don't want one that's been previously owned he said "oh it's the only one left and it is just so heavy the boxes can't withstand." So we continued with the purchases even though we went against our better judgment. When we got home we opened the box only to discover it was previously used/assembled. There were damages on the parts, bags were town open, and even a zip lock with the the tiny washers and screws in it. We IMMEDIATELY took it back along with the other items we purchased. Worse experience I've ever had and would not recommend anyone coming here. Your better off just buying on Amazon. In the future Erik if you plan to resell returned items just be honest. My boyfriend and I came to the store around 7:30pm to purchase a pair of cleats for him. We were greeted when we entered and we proceeded to walk to the back of the store where the shoe wall is located. He tried on 3 different pairs and during this time there were employees walking around us back and forth and we made eye contact with them multiple times but they never asked if we needed help or anything - which was fine because we didn't really need assistance BUT when we went to check out we were asked who helped us and when we said no one helped they had the audacity to tell us we needed to be helped by someone next time!?!? They then proceeded to ask us where we got the shoes from. My boyfriend and I just looked at each other so confused on what the issue was??? We responded the wall with the shoes, she said where, we said the back where the shoes are. Not sure how they don't know where the shoe wall is at when they clearly work there. We then proceeded to walk out with our purchase and when we were pulling out of the parking lot we noticed that we were followed out by one of the employees and they just stared at us.... The employees here are racist they kept only paying attention and being helpful towards white people . I I went here I went on July 2nd @11 looking for a beach umbrella with my family. Ever since we went in the stares we got from this older man we're not nice .I just asked a small question if those were the only beach umbrellas available and this older guy gave me attitude. I proceeded to ask another guy this one was young and he proceeded to just point me somewhere. Who is hiring these people they have no customer service. If you don't like your job then quit. It's a great store until yesterday, over a $15 item. I bought a stress ball for my father who started dialysis, and needs to exercise his veins. So the second day the item was defective And it's a $15 item i didn't care about the receipt. So i went back to Exchange the item and "Mayra" store manager wanted to charge $5 more and the item was then on sale @ $9 She denied the exchanged and denied pulling up the receipt, the refund for it was $9 after paying $15 She said i would have to get the receipt from Corporate Smh Waist of time. $15 is nothing, costumer service definitely sucks. Zachary is extremely rude and has horrible people skills. I asked to look at a pellet gun. Overall nice store, much bigger than some I had been. They have a pretty cool selection of everything from weights to ammo. I wished that Big5 has more selection of women's workout clothes, and especially workout Bras.However, the assistant Manager Michael M is always so kind everytime I stops here, it makes the shopping experience so much nicer (^_^). He does amazing customer service & makes you feel welcome & appreciated. He is awesome ;-) Michael is really down to earth & its easy to converse with him. Just don't expect much here. I've been a customer for twenty plus years, put two kids through youth and high school sports. I don't know if it's vibe that the gates and chain used outside of the door give off (to lock it up at night) or something else, but this place lacks...inspiration. Vs. a Sports Basement or even Dick's Sporting Goods there is very little reason to come here unless you know that a particular item is in stock and is mistakenly marked down or more competitively priced. I know retail can be a bore but GOD DAMN fake the shit for 15 bucks an hour or whatever it is they pay you. The kids(and I use that term loosely because anyone younger than forty to me is a kid) that work here are sad. What kind of sad, you ask? Well, the hide in the back, is my clip-on tie straight, "errr shit I gotta tuck in my shirt", or always checking their phone kind of sad; straight depressing. I see these stores are the Baskin Robbins of the sporting goods industry, old, outdated, happy to do it the way they did 40 years ago. The only tech I see is the cashiers checking their phones while you peruse the slovenly arranged aisles. If you do happen to get a "hi" upon entering, that is worth five stars in this review. Or even knowledge about your own emailed sale items would warrant a few stars. Not to be. This was once a proud sporting goods store that catered to a very down to earth clientele but I think the quality of the employees has downshifted to a R from third gear(bye-bye tranny) since the valley has taken off and most kids that work here couldn't find anything better or had a cousin that knows the guy that knows the guy that manages. Yes, and I only see male managers... For people looking for decent selection on Little League/youth baseball/softball, skateboards, & other rec gear, GTFO unless you know exactly what you want. I walk directly to the firearm area and looked for a few rifles I wanted to take a look at. After spending about 10-15 minutes browsing as I waited for someone to come by and help me, I decided to leave the store empty handed. I was disappointed that no one ever came by to ask if I needed any help, even though I noticed employees walking from the front to the back of the store multiple times. Clearly I could have went off to seek for help, but isn't it a standard to check up on customers every few minutes? So one star for prices... Nothing more. I came in looking for shoes. After a short search I came up with a couple possibilities. I scan the floor for a salesman, just to catch the only employee I see kicking open the stockroom door and disappearing behind it. Being fully aware he could be assisting another customer, I wait my turn. After a ten minute wait I catch a young lady heading back into the same room. I ask her if anyone is working in the shoe department. She tells me she'll get someone for me and disappears also. A few minutes later she comes back out and walks away. I catch her and ask her if she found someone to help me. I tell her nobody has assisted me still. She goes into the stockroom only to immediately run back out, ducking and dodging me to run to the front, where I find her chatting with another employee. Again I follow her and ask if I can PLEASE get some help. She waves her hand toward the shoe department and informs me, "There's like three people over there." with a big huff... There's still nobody in the department... So at this point the assistant manager (Patrick I believe) walks over and (I am not embellishing) asks every customer in the department except me (hovering near the stockroom door) if they need help, and proceeds to walk back to the front. Obviously at this point I was tired of standing around holding shoe displays and being ignored so I dropped the shoes and left. Not too quickly to overhear the manager complaining to another associate that the customers really need to start paying attention to the sale signs and stop bothering him for details... I don't know why I ever bother trying to find anything I need at a Big 5. I don't trust the sales staff to really know anything about the sports they're selling equipment for because of past service at other locations. At this location, that wasn't an issue. I wandered the store for a good 15 to 20 minutes trying to find an associate to help me, or find what I was looking for, without a shred of acknowledgment from anyone. I think I saw the manager, but the entire time he was looking at a rack of something with a very puzzled expression and not offering service, so I wasn't sure he was the manager or just some guy with a tie in on his lunch break. I couldn't find what I was looking for and got fed up waiting, so I left. This is the kind of (lack of) service that creates road rage. read more

Horrible customer service! I had the worst experience here and I am still kicking myself for making my purchase and not just walking out. I stopped by to purchase a pair of swimming goggles, simple enough. I walk up to the cashier with my goggles and said hello. The cashier let out the biggest exhale and groan.
