Big 5 is a sports retailer. They carry a bit of everything but not at mass quantities. I've been a Big 5 customer forever and have shopped at the Folsom location for quite some time. The prices are low. Lower than their competitor down the street (hint: name starts with D). Big 5 sells sports specific shoes, sports clothes, fitness equipment, sports gear, and accessories. This location like most all Big 5's have zero interior design theme. But who cares,since the prices are low and customer service is on point. Another thing to note is that they carry seasonal specific gear. In the summer, they have life jackets, swimsuits, kayaks, boards, and water toys which is convenient if you're headed to the river or any of the multitude of nearby lakes. Plus in the winter, they have snow clothes, snow shoes, and sleds. From Folsom, it's not that far of a drive before you get to snow elevation. read more

My fiancé and I decided to stop in to get some new summer shoes since mine broke and his were worn out. I purchased the Maui & Sons Cove Women's Sandals my fiancé helped me pick out. I'm tall so I have large wide feet so it can be hard for me to find shoes in my size, I tried on several sandals and these stylish adjustable sandals were the only pair that not only fit perfectly, but felt comfortable on! I've been wearing them for a few weeks now and despite stains, they've held up very well! My fiancé loves Sketchers so he picked out the Sketchers Men's Foamies Go Walk 5 - Astonished Clog! He said the cushioned soles were extremely comfortable and holes made them feel nice and airy! When the clogs gets wet it drains easily as well! I would recommend this location, the staff were very friendly and helpful and we saved $5.00 thanks to my fiancé's Boy Scouts of America coupon card we brought in! We'll definitely be back, they always have the best deals around and plenty of shoe options! We're hoping our durable shoes last for our Honeymoon in Hawaii next week, if not we know where to get more, ha ha! Great prices, which is a consistent quality about Big 5. However, there was minimal selection for golf goods, but would be okay for a beginner. Yet the worst part is the customer service there. The associates were friendly upon arrival, but didn't guide us to the section we needed. Plus, at checkout, Eli wasn't extremely helpful and was chewing gum (something you just shouldn't do in a retail position). Great place, just needs more guidance from managers to increase their connectivity with their clients. read more

Very reasonable pricing on most things. Every employee there is helpful, knowledgeable, and pleasant. With the exception of Melonie. She acted like a manager so maybe she was. You can tell me I'm lying to you and you can't give me a military discount, even though the past 6 times I've shopped here (this week!) & every clerk has given it to me. I understand, even if I don't like it. But don't try to charge me more the posted price of the thing I'm buying, it's not legal. I wouldn't have a problem w it, honest mistake & all, but not apologizing & acting like you are doing me a favor to charge me the posted price is just bad customer service. Used to be a good place to shop, good employees and good manager. Not anymore. I bought two airbeds, nearly $100 total. Both leaked. At the time of the purchase there was no mention of any "no returns" policy on airbeds. Nothing on the sales receipt mentioned such a policy either. Nevertheless, they refused to take them back and said they couldn't exchange them because they no longer stocked the item. The rather surly manager suggested they might allow me to "upgrade" to a more expensive model. There is simply no way I would, or will ever, give more money to this store. Do yourself a favor, find somewhere else to spend your hard earned cash. read more

"There is no bicycles allowed!". sorry I can't bring a bicycle into a "sports shop". not even mentioning I had to wait 10 minutes at the binocular section because nobody was there to open the counter. On the few times per year I visit this Big 5 I always have really good luck with great prices (sign up for their emails for regular discounts!) and friendly staff and great service. When recently making a purchase at the gun counter :) the manager helping me had someone open a register for me and I got to walk over and make my purchase and not wait in line! I was so happy cause I was pressed for time on my lunch hour. The employees are always friendly and helpful and this location is so convenient at a small strip mall! read more

Good prices if you're are not too picky. I like Big 5 stores and this is a pretty good location. It is a discount store and it doesn't have the newest or high end stuff but what they have is good quality. I like to grab stuff that I know will get thrashed from here, like running shoes for a mud run or whatever. They actually have a good wide selection of items, Baseball, Football, Tennis, Darts - you name it. Sizes and availability of items are hit and miss. Service has always been good here. Someone usually checks on me if I am staring at the shoes or other areas in the store. They open the second checkout lane if it gets crowded so that works. All in all it is a good store in a good location where I will continue to shop. read more

The firearms and ammo salesman who also happens to be the manager asked for my birth certificate after I gave him my federally limited Id. After realizing my mistake I gave him my cal real Id and he refused to take it saying it was illegal to carry two forms of Id and that he didn't feel comfortable taking it. (It's Illegal to have two real ID's) Mind you this was after HE asked for a second form of Id. After correcting him rather politely he got aggressive and then tried to dismiss me. Plus he was very cockeyed and it was disturbing and distracting. read more

Called them up, "do you have such-and-such shoe? You do? Oh great can you hold it for me and I will pick it up? You can? that's awesome". The three young ladies working there had their act together: pleasant, efficient, and right on in a pandemic: yes, had masks on (as did I). It's so nice when you see co-workers who work well together and not in a resentful, let's-get-over-on-the-boss type way but just in a decent, helpful way. Won't be back to this location. Lady up front at the register was very rude. We didn't have masks on and she told us we couldn't be there. She seemed to own the store the way she talked to us. I typically do not review department stores or retailers but something struck me today. I use yelp for pretty much everything so why not start now. I come to big 5 every couple months to replace my daughters swim suits since she swims competitively. Obviously in the winter time swim suits are hard to find but Big 5 usually has a good selection. I enter the store no greeting, employee looks right at me and looks away. I guess I'm not good enough to say hi welcome in. I locate the swim suits in the disaster of fixtures everywhere, no help needed. Walk up to the front and stand there while a manager talks poorly to an associate about cleaning the store tonight. I'm in retail so I can understand she wanted to set direction for the evening but hello I'm a customer and would like to check out. I don't need to hear about this associates poor closings or how not motivating this manager is. Big 5 great for finding needed sporting items, horrible if you want good service. Yikes. read more

For the amount of staff on the floor--I counted at least five--they seem woefully ineffectual. Not greeted and never asked if I could be helped--no biggie, but, just seems like there's enough ppl there to be no excuse for that, tho. Well I had a great experience!!! First of all I was looking for a pair of new nikes and I don't really look for shoes at Big 5, but I did today because I didn't really want to drive far. So I came here. I found a few pairs of shoes that I liked and Derek brought them out and I tried them on and they were great so I bought them. Then the laces were to short so I bought a pair. I did not know how to take the laces off or put them on so I asked Derek if he could put them on and he did. The cashier Allison was a great help also. read more

I Purchased a pair of Nike Metcon 4 shoes at Dick's Sporting Goods. The shoes cost over $130, and didn't last six months. The thin rubber soles have worn away at the toe and heal. When I contacted Dick's to try and resolve this issue, they only have a 30 day return policy. If you want to purchase any namebrand shoes, I highly recommend you do so directly from the manufacturer. If I had purchased these shoes directly from Nike (not Dick's), Nike would have sent me out another pair or reimbursed me. They warranty their shoes for 2 years. read more

I insisted on asking the manager, so she called this male over from the back. I'm not sure what his name was, I thought it was Jeremy, but they say it was Max working on Sunday night. Whomever it was, he made my whole day! While the cashier had me wanting to leave never to return, the man simply made a call to the manager and got a great price for me on these three items that Amber had refused. When he finished, I told Amber I hope she was watching, because that was excellence in action when it comes to customer service. I restrained myself from saying anything more because she certainly did not deserve any niceties. Horrible customer service! I visited the store the evening of Thursday the 16th a little before 6 PM in search of a specific pair of shoes that were on sale but not in stock at the Elk Grove store. I was not greet by either of the two young lady associates chatting at the check stand when I entered. I proceeded to the back to the shoe department and located the shoes I needed and proceeded to wait for assistance. After waiting a few minutes, I approached the check stand with shoe in hand and asked the two chatting associates for assistance. One responded that someone would be with me soon. She then paged the shoe department for a phone call and a second later for customer service in shoes. I waited a few more minutes and no one showed up to assist me. I noticed the door to the back room was ajar so I stuck my head inside and yelled 'hellooo'. A short time later, miraculously, two associates emerged from the back room door on the opposite side of the storage area and the young man approached to assist me. Since the shoe was not marked as 'on sale' I asked the price. He said it didn't have a colored tag so it wasn't on sale. (When I looked it up later online, the website said it was on sale through the 16th and that the size I needed was in stock in the Folsom store.) I left angry, frustrated and without the shoes that I drove 45 minutes to purchase!! So many missed opportunities to perform. In a time when one can purchase online with a keystroke, you'd think these associates would be happy to help a customer in the store to earn their paycheck. I hope the store manager reads this and does something to improve the service in this store. read more

Went in to buy a boxed dumbbell set. The manager was trolling around the weight area pretending to look at inventory. Never bothered to ask if I needed help and watched as I struggled to carry a 40lbs box by the strap and my 37lbs son in the other arm. The employee that rang me out mentioned I had my hands full but failed to offer to get help even after I mentioned the managers poor service. I'll shop elsewhere from now on. Went in wanting to buy a pair of shoes came out empty handed. Finally found a shoe that fit me and when I went to checkout the lady told me the price what double then what it was clearly advertised. The shoe was displayed in the Under $30 Women's section and had a whole display of the shoes filled with it. When I went and told the cashier she was like me and I did then was "oh let me get a manger" then the manger finally came out and told me to "show me the display" again. Then I dragged her butt to the display and she like "oh that's interesting". She could do anything about it even though it was clearly in the wrong section which they displayed. this review is solely on their staff. i was assisted by two young ladies, both of which were extremely rude. one helped my in the firearm department with short brown curly hair and was so unpleasant to work with. she was clearly annoyed to be at work and offered no real assistance. the first thing she said was "what do you want?". the other was a cashier with long dark hair. she was so short with me and quick to push us out the door. i wish i got their names but neither were wearing name tags. read more

Friendly staff? Are you kidding me? They have the worst customer service I've ever experienced. The fitness equipment I was interested in was displayed on an upper shelf that no one can reach. I asked the store manager to take it down and show me how to use it. Boy, did he snottily refused and said in a very sarcastic way, "NO I AM NOT SHOWING YOU HOW TO USE THAT THING". What a d**k! Very rude if you ask me. If you don't want to demonstrate it, then why sell it? How can you sell it if you are not even willing to show people how to use it? It's just wasting space in your pathetic store. Hey you store manager, if you can't be nice to your customer, you don't deserve that job. Customer service is not your forte so get out of there and find another job where you don't have to talk with people if you have that rotten attitude.
