This Big 5 store, located on Foothill Boulevard in Hayward, has parking in the back of the store available. The rear of the store is also where the entrance is. This place was clean and organized when I came here, but it wasn't very big. The employees were friendly and helpful, I couldn't find what I was looking for but they did offer to help. Maybe the smaller store means less inventory. But still, a good sporting goods store!! read more

There was trash at the entrance you stepped on / over in the way in door. Two employees in the store. I'm standing at the check out center where they can both see me waiting to check out. The employee not helping someone was on his personal cell phone. I wait watching him and although he sees me, continues to talk on his cell phone. After waiting several minutes at the check out center, I go and stand right in front of him and he continues to talk on the phone. I finally interrupted him and ask if he can check me out because I've been waiting for five minutes and he starts to check me out while still on his personal phone call. Finally he tells whoever he's talking to he has to go because he has to get to work (no urgency whatsoever). Worst customer service. The store was dead other than one customer who the other employee was assisting. read more

Walked in on Tuesday Jan 4th approx at 6:30pm(check the footage)with my infant son, there was a woman maybe in her 30's at the cash register, two Caucasian male workers and one Filipino(or another nationality)worker. 4 of them having a chat in the front. Lady says hi to me and no ones offers or asks me if I need help or if I'm looking for something. I peer towards the front and notice the 6 foot plus young Caucasian worker peaking over to see if I'm stealing. Sorry buddy I make 6 figures and I don't need to steal. Anyways, no help, slight accusations of me stealing so I bought what I came to bought on Amazon while inside Big 5. Almost bought the $40 item but instead took my $ elsewhere. This was my first time at this location, and the staff was incredibly helpful! Me and my mom were looking for a rifle and some night vision equipment as a christmas present for my dad, but we didn't really know what to pick out. Both staff members were very patient and explained every detail about each product. It was around black friday/Christmas so we also got a really great deal on all of the stuff we got! Decent sporting good store when you need something in a pinch. Located in downtown Hayward, the roads are poorly designed and the parking lot has fairly narrow spots. Prices are okay and they occasionally have weights in stock which are nearly impossible to find during covid. The store itself could use an update. read more

Today I was there for the third time this year and EVERY time I've been there I am so impressed with the employees. These young adults are so friendly and helpful as soon as you walk in. They are not overly aggressive either. A couple of weeks ago I went into Big 5 (on Foothill) for black high top shoes for my bad ankle. Sam helped me. He probably brought out every shoe for me to try on. He was unbelievably patient. I ended up buying one pair of shoes but then returned it today. Sam remembered me right away and while returning my shoes he found another pair online (only) for me. He's having them shipped to the store for me to try on. I've never had such good customer service especially at a sporting goods store. If you need an athletic shoe, go see Sam. Ah yes Big 5; who doesn't love to read there full color ad's in the paper. I know I sure do. The buggiest issue that Big 5 has going for them is there will most of the time be better deals online. Mark my words Amazon will put them out of business in no time. Lets talk about this location it's right off of Foot Hill off a very busy street. There is parking in the back it's a well maintained store but it's not super big. The issue I have is the prices are really not the best unless it's was advertised in there add's. The normal stuff that isn't marked down is ALWAYS way over priced I'm talking 10 to 50 over asking price. It's like I can save so much money shopping online. But you go here to get the stuff you need in a flash. There is almost never much of a line only 1 or 2 people max. They do have some good deals. The customer service is nice enough. But this is the type of place I go to if My jump rope is broken I don't want to wait 2 days I'll pick one up here. X shoes are on sale I'll buy them here; try to call ahead and see if they have your size. I have pretty big feet so it's hard for me to get my size. So I have to travel to Alaska in the peak of winter and need to buy layers to keep me warm. I did my internet research on how to layer, what materials to look for, what temperature ratings, etc, etc. I went in and was amazed at how knowledgeable the guy who initially served me was (Think his name was Kern). Its a pity I didn't get his name, but he was the white guy at the register. When we were walking through the store, he showed me where everything was, boots, socks, mittens, ski gloves, ski masks, base layer, second layer, outer shell, etc. He was basically talking in the terms I read online. He was explaining to me what wicking effect mean, why cotton is not a good base layer, what kind of boot i need, how to add more traction, etc. There were many items on sale and as I went on I was able to do price checks on items i was comparing, before buying. The items are placed on racks that are very easy to view and reach. Huge discounts and what you see in the store is exactly what you see online. I was very impressed. I had to get a stability ball and was looking at mats while being helped by Sam. He told me the ball I was going to buy was too small. I bought 2 different size stability balls and an eco friendly mat. After getting to work I realized Sam was right about one of the balls being too small, so l ended up exchanging it an hour later. I really liked the mat I purchased so o got another when I exchanged the ball for a bigger CM. SAM gave me a discount on the mat which I really appreciated. Being a former employee of the Alameda location, I was a bit bias walking in. The cashiers at the front, not the best customer service (the gentleman was at least trying though). However, Sam makes up for all of that! Great customer service. Fast & efficient. He was honestly the only one running around the whole time I was walking around. So today we were looking for a bike rack for our tow hitch. Looked online and found one on their website for $90. Great deal compared to the other ones going for $150and up. Called them and gave them the specific SKU# wanting to make sure they had it in stock. The guy double checked and said they did. I asked if he could put it to the side for me and I would be there in less than 10 min. Got to the store and they didn't have it in stock. They brought another one out and said their inventory was off. Spoke with the manager and told him that I specifically gave the guy on the phone the SKU so this wouldn't happen. When I did she was not very enthused about getting what I needed. She had no name tag on (the only one without one) she had short black hair. The staff member (Daniel) in charge of inventory was extremely helpful. I went in to find a pair of hiking boots. Tried on sizes 6.5 and 7. Realizing 6.5 was too big, I stood up from my seat hoping to ask for a smaller size. Daniel was on a ladder and immediately came down to ask if I needed assistance. After grabbing me a size 6 and trying it on, this size was too small!! Seeing that I was struggling to find the right size, he offered his advice and I took it. This is a cool place to stop at to grab a quick ball for a game. Do not come here looking for too much. The prices are pretty competitive. I find steals here on name brand things like Nike when they have it in stock. I recently came here to grab a Fitbit but they were sold out of course, more than likely because of the pricing of them being very competitive. I usually stop here to grab a ball pump, football or basketball when needed. They have the basics here so that's really all I come here for. The location is a little hard to find at first. I have driven by this place several times before I got familiar with the location. The parking here is easy, most times than not you will find close parking. The parking is shared by Chef's Bistro and a paint store but again the parking lot is a good size for easy parking. read more

ZERO STARS! Terrible customer service. I asked where to find the shin guards for soccer. The employee replied after looking up from his phone, "In the soccer section." Had I not been in a rush I would not have bothered to ask. I finally found the soccer section with no help from the employee. We waited to be rung up. There were two employees behind the register when we got to the registers, but one of them walked off. He eventually came back and rang up our purchase. Our total was 14.26. I handed him 20.26. He proceeded with the transaction, closed the register and handed me my receipt. I said can I have my change? He said you gave me .26. I said yes and I also handed you a 20. The employees were preoccupied and glared at us as we entered the store. No one offered assistance and were rude when we asked for help as if we were a bother. We are from Hawaii and we're getting ready to hop in the plane, so we grabbed the rollerblades we wanted, checked the size on one foot and put it back in the box to purchase. One of the boxes were missing one side so we grabbed the exact same size and model off the shelf and went to purchase the rollerblades. When we got all the way home to Hawaii and opened the box, we found it was all scratched up, the ankle parts were bent outwards, the wheels were dirty and the brake was worn down about a third of the way. They have no stores here, so they said my only option is to go back to the store to return it or exchange it or pay to ship it back to their facility. ‍both the store and customer service said there is nothing they can do. The skates were repacked nicely in the plastic and the box so there was no reason to believe it would be in such poor condition and unsafe to use. I'm leaving a 1 star reviews for big 5 sporting goods stores due to the corporate policy for not helping a customer who is stuck with a product that's not working but purchased driving back and forth 3 times and the corporate won't even help a customer with a simple refund due to their policy. Purchased a case of crossman co2 gas cartridges and 500 pellets. Inserted co2 cartridge into my barely used, used 8 of co2 cartridges in its life time which is fairly new, a crossman brand air pellet gun which was purchased at Big 5 sports good store a few years ago. A brand new crossman 5 of co2 cartridges and one cartridge came empty while the others were good and full. I tested the gun and the gun was working but I was not happy at the fact that one of the co2 cartridges came empty. But the store employee said they don't take used co2 cartridges but I told the employee that one of the cartridges were already empty before I got to use it. So the emoyee exchanged the whole case for me to a different brand, Daisy which I requested to avoid another defect or an empty co2 cartridge. As soon as I tried the first Daisy branded co2 cartridge, the gas started to leak. So, I took the cartridges back again and they were blaming the broken gun this time. As they tested out all the co2 that I purchased, they tested the gun with another co2 cartridge and the gas started to leak too. I was frustrated due to the fact that I was not able to use the 5 co2 cartridges but I came back home with 5 empty co2 cartridges which was paid for but used all 5 co2 cartridges to test at the store. So, I'm a customer who purchased co2 cartridges but the store emptied them out for me to test the gun out. Now, I'm stuck with a broken gun, all empty co2 cartridges due to testing at the store and 500 nonrefundable pellets. Called the corporate to see if I can at least get a refund on a $7 pellets that I'm stuck with. But the answer was a big "NO". So, I never got to use any of the 5 co2 cartridges but tested to empty at the store and I'm stuck with 500 pellets just because I wanted to test it out once. I think I need a refund for the pellets and the co2 cartridges that was never used by me. I'm leaving a 1 star review due to the corporate policy. read more

This place has a lot of good stuff but when I went in to buy a box of ammo they asked me for a copy of my ID and current mailing address! Since when do I need to fill out a background check to purchase ammo. It's unconstitutional. I walked out of the store and went a half mile down the road to solar tactical. Helped me find a bay (that I wasn't shopping for), but was looking them up and finding one that was not crazy expensive since who knows if she will even enjoy the sport after the season. They have a very small quantity of items in stock. I went in to look for basketball shorts for my son. I was directed to a section so small literally I thought they were playing a joke on me. At 11:00 AM, had another store call over for a pair of shoes that I needed. When we got to the shoe department, no one was there to help us. My wife and I waited around 3 minutes waiting for someone to help us, and when someone finally showed up in the department, they didn't even acknowledge us. Waited around another couple of minutes, and the same worker still didn't acknowledge us. We had to stop the worker and ask him for the shoes. Got the shoes, wrong size. Tried to talk to a worker, and no one would even acknowledge our existence. It's too bad cause the store is nice. But my wife does work in the area and she has stated she will try to tell everyone to not go to this store. read more
