Upon entry, it was so helpful to be greeted. I wanted body soap that was biodegradable and a representative walked us over. He also helped us pick a super lightweight sleeping bag. About 5 minutes and we were out of the store. Before paying they offered us an opportunity to donate to the RED CROSS so we said of course. During these COVID-19 times, this location has all the standard safety measures in place such as plastic barriers at the register and taped off benches in the shoe section to prevent customers from crowding too closely. This Big 5 is my go-to location for basic outdoor gear for camping and hiking. I often go here for good deals on shoes for myself and my kids as well. My patience is often rewarded in the form of emailed coupons and "Deal of the Day" notices offering steep discounts on everything from snow gear and hiking poles to oscillating fans and car dash cams. The only con with shopping here is that items often sell out quickly (especially sale items) and they do not keep a huge stock on hand (which is true for all Big 5 stores). read more

Who woulda thought they'd have a better inventory than Dick's Sporting Goods! Was looking for Tee Ball gear for my son. Dick's had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Literally.... ZERO sizes of any youth cleats, ONE bag (and it was a pink one) and 2 helmets total (one already banged up and the other red). I left and went to Big 5 and they had everything I needed. I understand it's softball/baseball season but to have NOTHING in stock DURING the beginning of the season is unacceptable. Big 5 had a selection of youth baseball bat backpacks/bags to choose from. They had 4 different cleats in his size and at least 3 different helmets in his size. We got Under Armour for all three items. In the past, I always hesitated coming to Big 5 because they typically don't have top-tier brands/quality products, but I was pleasantly surprised. What we got for his Tee Ball season was just as good quality as what Dick's was offering (all Under Armour gear), but Big 5 actually had plenty of stuff in stock and at the same price Amazon had. I rarely ever come to Big 5, but when I do it's usually for something specific that I can't find at a big box retail chain like Walmart or Target. I needed to buy a Wilson tennis ball hopper for my sister's Christmas gift and I got her a bag of Wilson tennis balls as well. I looked online at other stores to compare prices and to my surprise Big 5 had the best price. They were limited in stock at all locations except this one. I was able to walk in and found it right away. I also picked up a new pair of running shorts which is difficult to find in the size and fit I like. Checkout was easy and safe. They have plexi glass dividers at the checkout stand. All the staff members are wearing masks. The prices here can be over priced for some items I would do the research first before coming in to purchase just to make sure. The selection is also limited in shoes. I would check the inventory online so you don't waste a drive. For the items I needed to get I got a great deal. read more

I have been a customer of this Big 5 location for several years. The customer service has never been stellar, but what I experienced last week tipped the scale. As I entered, there were 4 employees hanging out at the checkout area. No greetings whatsoever, just blank stares. I walked back to the shoe section and located a pair that I wanted to try on. I walked back up to the front and requested help in the shoe section. Again, blank stares. Then, one young guy said ok. He located the size 10 shoe in the back and handed it to me. He walked away. Well, I needed to try on a larger size. Now, I know that I was the only person shopping there at 10:20 am. So I trekked back to the front and asked for help in getting a larger shoe size. They all looked around, like who's turn is it to get up off their ass and help. Finally the same young man got up like it was a bother to him. At that point I told him to forget it. " I see you are all so busy doing nothing. God help you if I am a distraction to your gossip club." Nobody there offered to help. No apologies. I asked a woman, who appeared to be in charge, how they expect sales in this store. Nothing even from her. I told her that I would review this store on Yelp and Facebook and would send a letter to their corporate headquarters. Pathetic service. I've received better customer service at Goodwill. read more

I went to go purchase my first gun here. I was looking for a Mossberg 500. They did not have it in stock. However, the guy working at the gun counter was willing to help me locate a store that had one. In the end, I picked a Maverick 88 because it was on sale for a good price. They also had a variety of shotgun rounds. However, they were not the cheapest. The man was able to give me a Federal Safety Certificate Test (FSC) and had it graded relatively quickly (and I got a 100%)! Then, he helped me fill out all the paperwork. That entire process took less than an hour. Now, I am waiting for my 10-day wait to be over. If you are looking to buy a gun, check for sales online or on ads and you should be able to find a good deal every once in a while. The man selling me the gun seemed to be interested in firearms and was very helpful. You might have to wait a little bit if there are other people, because you can only process so much paperwork in a short amount of time. The only way that I think this place can improve is to carry all guns that they have on their website (which isn't that many). Either way, I had a good experience. read more

When I arrived the manager of the store was unfriendly, unhelpful, and down right witchy. Lied to me and said the tools to put a bike together were in the box, which I knew was definitely not true. Who sells bikes and not the manpower to put them together? Normally you pay extra they put it together. Came here, against my better judgment to go to the one near my house, because I also needed to go to another store, fairly close to this store. I bought a raft, at a different location, to go floating about an hour an a half away from my house. After it was aired up, we weren't floating for more than 20 min before our bottoms were dragging on the ground, due to a leak somewhere. I ended up paying for rental rafts at the location & decided to return the defective raft. I don't have the ability to fold it down to the factory specifications so I did my best & put it into the box. The cashier called the general manager over & after saying, "Good morning", I was greeted with a smile that was perceived as, "How can I help you get out of my face?" You know, those customer service half-smiles? Alex, the general manager, looked at the box and immediately said she would not accept my refund claiming the item was not in its original condition/unopened. I wouldn't have known that there was a leak if I didn't open the box... She didn't even inspect the item to see that it had absolutely no wear because it was hardly "used". Unsatisfied, I called corporate who stated that refunds are at manager's discretion but they are required to inspect the item to make their determination. They called and spoke with Alex who LIED and said that she had inspected it, when, in fact, she hadn't even taken it out of the box. To be the General Manager & lie to corporate about something that can be proven by camera takes guts. I took it back to the location by my house and was out of the store within 10 minutes and it only took that long because I was expressing my gratitude. I came in looking for a snowboard jacket. The staff were the perfect amount of helpful and not bothersome. They gave me my space and just checked in every once in a while. While checking out the staff noticed a discrepancy on the price advertised and the price charged. Even though I technically already paid for it they went back to check on the racks for the right sale price. They did this all on their on volition, I had no idea that the item was on sale. I go here when I need to get any sports equipment. They have a great deal on used golf balls. I usually buy these rather than new ones when I plan on loosing a lot of balls when I go playing golf. I never have to wait in line long and the parking is never a problem there. The check out counter clerk was friendly. Over all a good experience. What is up with Big 5 just sucking? I went to this one after a crappy experience with another. I called ahead to see if they had an item (inversion table), saying I wanted to try it out. They assure me it's there, so I drive down. So when I get there, the equipment is on a top shelf and not available for me to really check out. I ask them if they can get it down. I'm told no, they aren't allowed to let people try it out. This is insane on two accounts... Big 5 is going to go the way of Blockbuster soon. read more

Glad to see they sell ammo but sad that there's no actual rifles or shotguns for sale, just air guns so far. Kinda made the mistake of checking the place out right after they opened and business was slow but the store was packed with employees and around every corner there's another worker asking "anything I can help you with?". I don't mind being offered service but a question every 30 seconds gets annoying. Even though being bombarded by workers so often whenever I wish to buy ammo there's nobody around to help me out, like I'm better off jumping the counter and picking what I needed off the shelf. read more

Here's an update. I called the corporate office and told them the situation. They agreed that I should have been refunded the full amount and sent a digital copy of the receipt to the store. I went back to the store to get my refund. So I'm satisfied with the outcome, but the fact that I had to jump through hoops still doesn't sit well with me. I was never a huge Big 5 shopper because I don't love the layout of the stores. It can be hard to find some stuff in the store, and it's hit or miss whether or not I find what I'm looking for. However, I have been in the Poway Big 5 three times since it opened. 2 out of the 3 times, they have gone out of their way to accommodate our needs. If they even perceived they made a mistake, they will bend over backwards to help you and make the sale. This worked to my benefit both times. I'm truly impressed with the level of service and am now convinced to always try there first! read more

Normally I always have a good experience at this location and one of the managers Max is great, but recently my last experience here was unbelievable. So I come in to make a return on an item that was a display when I purchased it, when I got home I found out the item was broken so I brought it back and was told they wouldn't expect my return and that unless it was brand new in the box they would not refund me my money... makes absolutely no sense seeing as the item was not brand new in the box when I purchased it.. I had the receipt and the item was brought back exactly how I purchased it so why would I not be able to return the item. Asked to talk to the store manager and was told that she's too busy and that she could not help me... great customer service right....? So I will be returning to this store only when MAX is working from now on. Hopefully he can fix this ridiculous problem for me when I come back. read more

Worst customer service ever. This store inspired me to join yelp and write a review. I came in to buy some thermals for an upcoming ski trip. I was in the store for at least 30 minutes shopping for winter gear and was never greeted or asked if I needed help even though the store was over staffed. There were 4 employes and 2 customers. When I made it to the register, one employee was doing a lengthy return while the 3 other employees, two of which appeared to be managers, ignored me. One of the managers even took a personal phone call at the register and when done, walked away. Here I am, a paying customer waiting patiently in line to check out and no one offers to check me out at the open register? Another employee did come to the register, but only to clock out for lunch and then went outside to smoke a cigarette. I'm amazed that this store is still in business. read more
