On Saturday evening my boyfriend and I stopped in for some new kicks. Our shoes were wearing out and it was time. After trying on a few pairs, we each picked out a pair of running shoes with memory foam. Compared to other Big 5's this one is pretty nice. They have friendly service, I'm always greeted or asked if I need any assistance. They have a wide variety and selection of sports equipment. Most regular priced items can be more expensive then their competitor stores. Therefore, I would suggest shopping with in store coupons (offered in their ad in the Sacramento Bee) and during their special sales to maximize savings! I got a killer deal on a swimsuit for me, and a swim vest for my son last year. Overall this is a decent place to shop for sports related items if don't feel like driving around town. It's not the cheapest, but if you use their coupons and look closely you can find some good deals. read more

This has been my go to place for quality, functional kicks for years. I have grown fond of this Mac road location, as it is a close neighbor to my favorite gym. At any given point you can find an already reduced pair of shoes at an even greater discount! Staff is helpful and despite the location they don't stake you out or have security follow you around. They appreciate their customers here, have a great selection of camping and fishing gear but the everyday wear and tear shoes are really what is up. If I had kids, with as quickly as they go through shoes, this would be the place to keep there little feet covered. Big 5 encourages coupons! I specifically asked the worker bee for a mouth guard that was "small, low-profile, comfortable" but the one I left with was HUGE. I didn't realize until I was already at practice and I had to wear it anyway. It hurt my teeth it was so bad! When I returned to Big 5 later that day to buy knee pads I mentioned to a nearby manager that I was displeased with the mouth guard I had purchased earlier. Much to my surprise she told me they would be happy to return it. They let me return a used mouth guard!! There aren't enough stars to give!! read more

Lots of sports stuff, too. basketball, football, tennis, golf...it's all there. If you like to dribble, shoot, or just sink a putt...this is the Big 5 to go to. Cheap athletic shoes! Try them on for size. Some can be made from old Firestone tires. That's no way to walk or run. I bought our Ping Pong Table at this Big 5. With a little practice I'm a regular Oleg Zandersson. My wife bought some pink pepper spray so it does have something for the ladies, too. I bet Sarah Palin could buy some fishing waiters at Big 5 for a low price. I give Big 5 five big grunts. The guy at the gun counter was really helpful and friendly, which is refreshing since most gun stores have ornery old fogeys who are not really into customer service. He even let me inspect 3 rifles and pick out the best one when I bought my WWII relic Mosin Nagant 91/30. The prices can be outstanding at times, I love perusing the weekly ad to see what treasures may await me. Even today I was tempted by their $9 airsoft pistol (usually $30) and $10 electronic target (usually $20). Don't forget the crazy deals on folding pocket knives. They are on sale for $9 all the time but the normal price is $60! (*snicker*) read more

This is a review on their store as a whole in regards to their system and policies. I am not commenting on their employees or management which seems adequate to me. I am also not commenting on their merchandise which seems to be very low end in comparison to Sport Chalet or Sport Authority. This is the only store I have ever been to where I want to return something and they CANNOT look up my credit card information. I bought arm wraps for boxing and I ended up not needing them. So I went over to the store to return it and I figured they could pull up my information on my credit card because most big chain stores can but nope not big five. They said they could only offer me store credit and they couldnt look up my credit card information because their system scrambles all the information. Big 5 upgrade your pathetic system, you are the only chain I have ever been too that cannot pull up past purchases information with a credit card. I have been to stores where they can e-mail me my freaking recipe and Big 5 can't even pull up my past purchases. read more

I worked for 3 years as a sales associate at the Davis store, so I know the level of service that used to be expected of sales associates. We came in looking for basketball shoes for my son. Every time we shop for shoes we must wait around for an associate to come help us. And when we do finally have one help us, if they are getting shoes for another customer, then we usually have to wait. This time was no exception. When I worked for Big 5 we knew the shoes so well that we could help 5-6 customers at once. It is way faster and more efficient to grab several boxes of shoes from the back at once than go back and forth. This time they were out of a particular shoe in the size we needed. Rather than voluntarily checking another store we had to ask them. I had the model shoe of the one I wanted in my hand and even indicated to the associate to make sure when he calls the other store that they check which color they had because this model came in two colors. I even wrote all the shoe information down for him, including SKU number. He said the other store would have it transferred over and they would call me. To transfer shoes at Big 5 from store to store, the other store sends it to their warehouse on the next truck (that comes once a week), the the following week it gets shipped out to the other store on their weekly truck. So if you just miss the 1st stores p/u, then you're looking at about 2.5 weeks. They told me it would take 3-4 weeks most likely. Whatever. When we really wanted to help a customer out, the managers would actually drive to each other's stores and pick the items up to transfer them. After 5 weeks of me checking in they finally called to say they arrived. When we got to the store to pick them up they couldn't find them. We had them look again and then they found it. I don't know what was so hard, back in my day all customer holds went on one shelf (and it wasn't common so it wasn't that the big of a shelf). He brings them out and they are the wrong color! Rather than offer to check he just says sorry he doesn't know what happened. So we left, with no shoes.... I will give the store 2 stars for convenience and the wide variety of items they carry. So in a pinch, I can usually get what I need. read more

Been coming to this Big 5 for a few years now. Super easy access from the freeway. The store is always well stocked, clean and full of helpful employees. Today was no exception. They have great sales and you can ALWAYS get a coupon online for a minimum of 10% off the sales! Today I was helped my the actual stores manager Ken. He was awesome! Super friendly and extremely helpful. I had multiple items to buy, none of them having anything to do with the other and and he handled it quickly and with a smile. I was able to get everything I came in for and also use a 20% off coupon! This is a great sports store and I hope they stick around even with the new competition moving in. Thanks Big 5! read more

First this store always is in stock of ad items. One time they weren't they offered a substitute or a rain check. Staff is great. Quick help in firearms when needed. Always a greeting upon entrance and a thanks upon exit. Recently I went into the store and there was a 50 year old African American woman there that I was not familiar with. A customer asked were the bathroom was and she told him back wall to the right. And when asked if it was behind the door. She just repeated the directions and turned away. When I was checking out I attempted to get a smile out of her and she would have non of it. Disappointing for my great local Big 5. Hope it was just a bad day. read more

Dear Big 5 employees, I know you don't know me, and I don't know you as well. But! When someone comes to your store to buy a rifle, do you treat everyone like a criminal, or was it just me? What gave away that I was up to no good? Was it my 49er T-shirt? Was it my black and red shorts? Was it the little 9 year old girl that was with me that said... He's trying to steal a gun from us? And why must you tell me about the (firearm safety certificate) I own 7 LEGAL guns, so I know all about the FSC. FYI mine don't expire until 10/31/2020. With that being said & showing you my State issued ID, I still was not able to even hold the potential rifle that I wanted to buy, yes buy, not steal it and have my face all over the news for being stupid, but pay for it & wait 2 weeks until my background came back clean. But your employee was too afraid to let me hold it. By the way the rifle was a small .22 LR. I guess I'll find another store that will trust me to hold the rifle & give it back. I got a great price on some Kicks....I spent $14.01 on new shoes that feel like and look like $60 pair of shoes....The best thing about Big5 is there sales and there cheap shoe sales....You can't tell my shoes aren't name brand....I aint old but once you get older - your money doesn't go towards nice kicks anymore but to important things like-food,bills, a roof over your head.....I will go back to this Big5 due to it having my size of shoes and the one in Elk Grove never does...I am willing to drive a few more miles when I need new kicks...hahaha read more

This review is specifically about the Big 5 return policy. Beware that if you return anything to a Big 5 store, you will need to show your drivers license and the info will be stored in their cash register database and who knows where it goes from there. I bought a pair of shoes that didn't fit right. I returned them the same day with the tags attached and the original store receipt. I had only wore them around the house for like 3 minutes to see if they fit right and they didn't. The shoes were a great price at $22. When I asked why I needed to show ID to return them, the female clerk said, "that's in case someone returns something every day then we would know". If you go to Target, you can return a TV without showing your ID. So what's the big deal here? They got the shoes back in new condition with a proof of purchase. I am gonna call another Big 5 and ask a manager about the store return policy and their privacy policy. I wouldn't shop there anymore, but their cheap shoes keeps bringing me back. read more

First of all, when I entered the store it looked like a tornado tore through it. I called earlier to have a pair of shoes held for me. The cashier called for the shoes over the intercom and I waited. Then I waited some more. After more waiting, I waited a little more, then asked her to call again. She did, but there was more waiting to be had. During my waiting time, there were several employees waking around aimlessly(similar to Walking Dead). Not one of them had my shoes! This was about 15 minutes wasted waiting while my kid went and got a pair of shoes from the shelf. It was faster to dig through the messy,disheveled store, than to wait for the ones on hold specifically for us. Ok, we got the shoes, yay. ..Not so fast!! As my children and I had to clean off the bench, a sales associate named Dominic decides to rearrange and stock about 6 inches from me. Let's just call him Crowdy Smurf! So, not only do we have to fight through the mess but we're being uncomfortably crowded. When we got to the register, the guy was not friendly. Absolute lack of social skills.
