When shopping for a gift, I like to browse in stores and see the products in person. Another advantage is you can take home your items, no need to wait for the goods to be shipped. So many are ordering online, which can be deceiving when your item arrives. I was looking for a birthday gift, which can be difficult when they have "everything." The store is organized with a good inventory. The shelves are fully stocked with sports equipment, camping gear, athletic clothing for all ages. The employee even brought out a huge ladder to reach some products that were displayed at the very top of the shelf. It is winter, so I bought "warming gloves" and some cozy slip-on booties that were lined with soft sheep skin fur. Awful customer service. Don't shop here... I've lived in San Dimas for over 30 years and have shopped here since I was in little league. I've shopped here for my kids as well. You would think 30 years of store loyalty would earn you a little respect. But not here... I made a purchase and wanted to return it but didn't have the receipt. No problem I thought, I'll just take store credit... but they wanted to give me the item back at 50% of the purchase price even though they still sell the item,and have them stocked, at full retail... Louise, the angry lady behind the counter, explained that if I had the original credit card I used, that she could run it to determine that I paid full price. I DID have the card via Apple Pay but she wouldn't run it because I didn't have my drivers license. But I DID have a photo of the front and back on my iPhone, however she wouldn't even look at it and refused to help me. So I walked out with my $24 item and they will never see my family again... over $12.50 in store credit... pathetic considering I've been shopping there for 3 DECADES lol. Crazy to think that in a time where you don't have to patronize local retail stores, but choose too to help keep people working, those same establishments treat you like you don't matter... Sometimes you can find good deals on hiking shoes and other outdoor equipment here. Last month, I was able to snag a pair of Columbia shoes--that are selling for $70 on Amazon--for $30 here. This Big 5, the T.J. Maxx, and the Royal Panda Chinese restaurant are the last remaining strongholds of the original stores that have existed since the San Dimas Plaza that they're in was built in about 1988. Every other store has since been replaced. All of us old people remember when we came to this plaza for either Blockbuster, Ralphs (which has since been split into the now Smart and Final and Harbor Freight), or Rite Aid. This Big 5 used to be where I'd buy my basketballs, baseball, karate, or swim stuff as a kid. In fact, this is where everyone I knew in the local area used to buy most of their sports gear (before Amazon took over). My dad's house is about two blocks from here and he still comes here, for fishing gear mostly. read more

Been there twice. The first time I was there with my entire family of 6. Everything we needed for our snow day trip was in store: kids snow boots, sled, etc. The space was well organized so we were able to find what we needed quickly and with ease. The customer service was very good. They were helpful in answering all of our questions and they even seemed happy to help. The second time I went the cashier was helpful giving me advice for parking up in the National Forest area and let me know where else I'm able to buy the passes in case we need them. Her advice was priceless as she did not have to let me know since they offer what we needed right there in store. What a gem of a lady. This place has knives, ammo and guns in stock. Got a great little pocket knife for myself, new workout gloves and pull up bar. Not a bad place to get inexpensive sport attire for your family. The main reason I come here is due to the $10 coupon that arrives to my home periodically. The selection is limited but the prices are affordable. The shoes are not that attractive and if you do find the one you want they are usually sold out. I feel this place is good alternative to Walmart and great for athletic equipment for your kids. Customer service was not bad as everyone was friendly. Lastly there was ample parking so shopping isn't as hectic like other plazas or shopping centers. read more

I happen to LOVE Big 5 for man- gifts, sports items, and their epic end- of-season sales. Yeah, sure, some of the stuff is off-brand and not as prestigious I guess as Dick's, but for smaller kiddoes and disposible items you only use a couple times a year (ie. snow pants) you just can not beat it. The employees are usually younger kids, always courteous and helpful. Also when you have to return something they are good, too, like the time I had to return a tabletop ping-pong net that was a piece o' caca- they took it back no problemo. read more

Checked out and our purchase was 49 dollars plus change asked about coupons and was ignored and then we asked again and Fiona said she didn't know and if we find one it has to have a bar code, she never looked up at us... 5 stars for big 5! I always shop at this location and felt compelled to leave a review after seeing some bad reviews. First, cashiers don't normally leave their post to walk costumers to an item and this goes for any store... There are always sales people on the floor for this. The employees at big 5 always go above and beyond. At this location specifically, the management is very kind and attentive. I buy cleats, shin guards ,coaching supplies and shoes here. The sales people know a lot about sports and give good suggestions. They must hire athletes or something. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL LAMES! Waited in line to buy some goggles, NBD. When I reach the cashier, she turns away and starts to engage in a conversation with the Manager about whether or not she could have a day off for her relatives' baptism. AWESOME. After standing there with my goggles in my hand for a minute, I bust out a nice and loud "AHEM," and tell her "Girl, I don't have time to hear about your baptism problems!" After she realizes she's at work, to do...WORK....The girl sort of stammers an apology, finally rings me up, and goes back to her conversation. Don't get me wrong, I get it. Peeps in retail don't always offer the best service, as these sort of shenanigans happen from time to time (my dad has the best McDonald's cashier on cellphone story, but I digress..). Not a big fan of this particular store. Every time I am there, there seems to be an issue at the counter as I always see an unhappy customer waiting to speak with a GM on hand. As far as selection goes, the you won't find anything too crazy. In my opinion, it's great for outdoors/hiking. Everything else, I would opt to go elsewhere. Many thanks to the service we received on Wednesday this past week...sorry it took a while to let you know. We were on the hunt for a hinged knee brace and yelped locations near our dr. Several options appeared and I called Big 5. I was greeted with a welcoming voice, Ashley. She kindly informed me they have what we needed. In fact a couple of options. So when we arrived I was greeted by her and directed to the braces. There was a gentleman in that area who offered assistance and some insights to the braces - thank goodness as I was lost on selections. My husband on crutches was offered a seat up front. I did not have a receipt but I did have the bank statement that showed I bought something from the same store I was returning it too which is the Big 5 in San Dimas. Based off the response I received after filing this complaint to the Big 5 customer care center, I am am going to upgrade this rating to 3 stars. I received an email from a representative within a couple days of filing this complaint. This is some of what it said "Please accept our sincere apology for this unfortunate incident. It has always been our number one priority at Big 5 Sporting Goods to provide the best possible service to all of our customers. Obviously, we fell short of our goal in this instance. Only when a customer takes the time to contact us, as you did, do we have the opportunity to address issues such as these. Your experience will be reviewed with the store's management staff and District Supervisor, and as a result the level of service provided will improve to meet our high standards." In addition I received a phone call from a Big 5 rep today apologizing. He also let me know that they investigated what happened and that the manager is no longer working at Big 5. He asked for me to give them another shot. It is not often I see a follow up like this and because of the way it was handled I will be going back to give Big 5 some more of my business. read more

Can I give this place a no star? CUSTOMER SERVICE DOES NOT EXIST AT THIS STORE! When I came into the store, there were three employees standing at the register and two of them was talking among themselves and one was on their CELL PHONE. As I walked towards them, NO ONE GREETED ME and acted like they were too good to even acknowledge me. I think they all think they get pay $100 an hour so they are better than their customers. I then ask the "less busy" one near the register where the CamelBak Replacement Valves were, and she pointed me towards the back where the backpacks were. I look and look and can't find it and then I went back to ask her again. Yet again, she pointed that it's near the backpacks. I don't get it, shouldn't you be a bit more personal and walk your customer over to the item they are looking for, especially when I sound and acted that I was in a hurry. It was Saturday evening at 5pm and there were only 2 customers near the backpack and three employees at the register. I finally had it, I had to go and ask another employee where the CamelBak Valves were, and she walked me over to it. I then went up to the register and corrected the employee and she said I never mention Valves, so she pointed me to the backpacks section. WOW? Maybe you were too busy gossiping with your other co-workers that you didn't even care! For management - Yourself is at fault as well for hiring useless people to take care of your customers. They were working this past Saturday around 5pm and they all should be talk to. It was my first time at this store and it will be my LAST!
